Marrying traditional Celtic melodies and instruments with West African traditional rhythms and modern musical stylings like Highlife and Afro-pop may not seem like the most natural idea. But in the hands of Baka Beyond--a group that takes the term world fusion seriously, as it's roughly split between Celtic and West African musicians--the combination makes for a delicious musical stew that goes down smoothly. It's been five years since the group's last album, and longtime fans who discovered the band through its hugely successful Spirit of the Forest release in 1994 won't be disappointed. East to West is probably the group's most accomplished work to date.
Founded by English guitarist Martin Cradick and singer Su Hart, who lived with the Baka pygmies in the rainforest along the Cameroon-Congo border in 1991, Baka Beyond stands out from a world fusion crowd that includes groups like Deep Forest and the Afro-Celt Sound System by delving a little deeper than most into both the African and Celtic roots of its music. On East to West, instead of dropping in the occasional sample for exotic effect, the group places the disparate elements together in a live context with thrilling results: "Awaya Baka," where a chorus sung by Baka children melds with Paddy Le Mercer's Celtic whistle amid a funky Highlife groove; "An Gwirder," where Nii Tagoe's West African balafon and Alan Burton's bagpipes, based on similar pentatonic scales, mix seamlessly; and "Wandering Spirit," which fuses two Scottish jigs with a traditional Baka dance rhythm. --Ezra Gale

En Vogue WERE Born To Sing!.......2005-04-03
En Vogue has a style that is sexy, brash and classy, not to mention their stellar vocal stylings which all four women mesh well together and never sound boring or competing. The women of En Vogue (Dawn, Cindy, Terri and Maxine) take turns sharing the spotlight on their 1990 debut and they all can hold their own.
With a little help from Club Noveau (spell?-they brought you the remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean On Me" and were once called the Timex Social Club which had a hit called "Rumors") members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue captures the esscense of early 90's New Jack with their debut.
The hits were the street funky "Hold On" which features a nice little intro of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" but seems out of place with the song itself. "Lies" was next with it's hip-hop New Jack piano and a female rapper named Debbie T. Then the harmonious "You Don't Have To Worry" and the drum machine drenched "Don't Go" summed up the biggest hits off the album and also the best songs off the album. The other tracks hold up well against the hits, such as the quirky and sharp "Strange" and the small interlude of the Andrews Sisters classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which had a hip-hop flair to it and that I wished was longer. "Luv Lines" is another notable which features some great keyboard work and showcases some demanding singing from Dawn. And the bonus track "Waitin' On You" features some sultry vocals from Cindy and a wonderful sax by late great sax player Grover Washington Jr. and the glorious remake of "Just Can't Stay Away" holds well with the original. Still there are some duds like the eerie "Part Of Me" which isn't great at times and it can be sleep enducing but still En Vogue take turns at singing lead on this one and I give them props for that. Also "Time Goes On" is verry annoying after a couple of listens especially with the repetative "Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock" it practically drove me insane at first listen!
With some funny interludes ("Party" features the girls at a party being approached by some stupid guys, it's verry funny and it reminds me of some of the guys that approach me at parties-you do want to say "NOOO!"), harmonous vocals, toe-tapping music and a sense of style and class from these ladies you will fully enjoy "Born To Sing" if you buy it. I'm now planning on purchasing "Funky Divas" and more En Vogue albums (though sadly Dawn left and the group it was never the same). A very good solid debut that makes you want to stand up and applaud!

Where it all began.....pretty good!!.......2004-12-14
En Vogue was spawned by a couple of memebers from Culture Club, Denny Foster and Thomas McElroy. Who would've known what a group EV would turn out to be? En Vogue is the group that most artists then and now modeled themselves after and list as inspirations.
You can't go wrong with soulful voices that all fit the bill of being a true soloist. The voices blended together create harmony that is almost unheard of these days. Even in the faster songs you hear the harmony that we all loved. "Hold On" is the most recognized song that shot EV to super-stardom. It starts with a lovely and well-known acappella version of "Who's Lovin' You" from Jackson 5. Terry leads and the girls back her up well, and then Cindy throws down on the rest of the leads. Cindy also leads on the classic "You Don't Have To Worry", another hit for the girls. All of the girls share leads on the tight New Jack Swing song "Lies", which also has a cameo from a relatively unknown Debbie T (those of you with ears to the underground know her, mainstream America doesn't). The song flows effervescently. Also worth mentioning is the song "Luv Lines", in which Dawn belts out with the soul we all love.
If anything, a girl group must come hard with ballads or they will fall into obscurity; never the case with En Vogue. With such lovely-blended voices, how can you go wrong with ballads? Check out "Part of Me", my favorite song on the album. Each girls sings a lead and then harmonizes well, and the harmony soars throughout the song. This song isn't really a ballad as much as it is a socially themed song, but the girls reall shine on it. Definitely check out the song "Don't Go", in which Terry really shows off her vocal versatility. The girls throw down with this old-school type song. Speaking of old school, "Just Can't Stay Away" is one of the best remakes I have heard in a while. The girls' voices soar over Terry's leads, and this song is just a masterpiece!
We also are treated to a couple of interludes...one, a funny one in the beginning of the album, "Party" is just too much for me! lol. Also, at the end of "Strange", you get a funny interlude with Terry and Cindy talking about people. Also, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is an updated version of the classic Andrews Sister song...just listen to Terry say "uh uh, not that version" and you will laugh like crazy. En Vogue is definitely known for their crazy interludes.
The one song I didn't care for on here was "Time Goes On". I just couldn't get into it, because it really grated on my nerves after trying to like it.
En Vogue epitomizes harmony in every sense of the word. When you think of En Vogue, you think, "man, them girls can sing!". What a perfect title for this album. A definite R&B collector's item!!

Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.

In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. As the title suggests, the tracks here are largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections. Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," while an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Classy,Romantic, And Stirring........2007-03-09
Piano (Memory)is even more soul stirring in Italian than the english version. If the english version was perfection she improved upon it. One More Walk Around The Garden is sad and soul stirring bringing a tear to the eye on every play.Sarah sings her way through every song with the voice that earned her the title Angel of Music.Everyone a Gem. A must have for every true fan.
Lovely - Just Lovely!.......2007-01-04
I especially liked 'One More Walk Around the Garden' (Carmelina), 'There is More to Love' (Aspects of Love), 'The Last Man in My Life' (Song and Dance) and 'Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta' (La Rondine). 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again' (The Crooked Mile) is especially well done as well.
I do enjoy playing the CD but I find that I pick the songs that I play rather than allowing it to play all the way through.
Encore!.......2005-05-29
Captivating.......2004-12-25
`Encore' is a compilation of material recorded between the late 1980's and 2001. It features strong renditions of `Away from You' by Rodgers and Harnick and `In the Mandarin's Garden' by George and Ira Gershwin. The orchestration on `If I ever Fall in Love Again' is a bit overblown but she sings the piece with sincerity, and very well. Her cover of Lane and Lerner's `One More Walk Around the Garden' is a thing of beauty. The same can be said for her handling of Sondheim's `What More Do I Need'. The weakest moment in the set comes during Puccini's `Chi Il Bel Di Doretta'. She sings it well but her voice doesn't quite have the pure power needed for the piece and there are moments where the strain shows.
Sarah Brightman really shines when she sings music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her voice takes on an extra richness. He wrote the music for nine of the fifteen cuts on this release and can be identified as the composer of each one just by the tone her voice takes on when she begins singing any one of them. It's softer, richer, more expressive- it's as if there's an extra facet in her voice and spirit just for his compositions. He produced this collection but I don't believe that was a factor. The same thing struck me when she performed the material from the Phantom of the Opera that appeared on her La Luna concert DVD. `Think of Me' as performed by her was the song that attracted me to her voice even when I was less than sure of the scope of her talent. The recording here is the recording from `Phantom' and it's still stunning. `Piano' is hauntingly beautiful. `The Last Man in My Life' is given a ravishing performance. `Half a Moment' is devastating. The list goes on. There's not a weak cut from among his material. Webber's songs stay with the listener. Their melodic are lush and rich and have enough scope and variety to remain interesting over a long period of time. His orchestration is sumptuous, elaborately textured and a little sweet in the way that touches the listener as a caress. When she sings them they become all they can be. This isn't his music or hers. It's their music.
This is an excellent collection because of the way it showcases this. The material here has been (unkindly) labelled as `ear worms'. To an extent the term is accurate. Show tunes do lean toward catchy and easily accessible melodic lines. Their lyrics are often shallow. What's presented on this collection has more than its share of all of these faults. It's impossible to be cynical about it though. These songs, particularly the numbers penned by Lloyd-Webber, are strong on their own. When they're performed this well, and with this amount of affection, they're captivating. The quality of the sound on the release compliments the material beautifully. It's rich, lush and always crystal clear. Sarah Brightman herself is always a pleasure to listen to. Her voice it has a sparkling quality that's radiantly beautiful. The material on this collection shows that beauty to its fullest.
Listen to her singing these songs and let them wash over you. It's the perfect antidote for cynicism.

East to West is probably the group's most accomplished work to date.Founded by English guitarist Martin Cradick and singer Su Hart, who lived with the Baka pygmies in the rainforest along the Cameroon-Congo border in 1991, Baka Beyond stands out from a world fusion crowd that includes groups like Deep Forest and the Afro-Celt Sound System by delving a little deeper than most into both the African and Celtic roots of its music. --Ezra Gale

Album Description
Joshua is a pioneer in the field of world music, creating a synthesis of east and west. His music is perfect for both meditation and celebration. Sky Kisses Earth is a ticket to the ancient Tantric temples of India. Effortlessly, Prem Joshua blends the magic of Eastern music (Sitar, Tabla, Flutes, Santoor, etc) with transparent and modern Western sounds. These hypnotic grooves, fine textures and rich melodies will transport the listener to a cross cultural mythic land of golden radiance.Customer Reviews:

A different flavor compared to his previous works.......2002-11-14
You'll notice a lot more use of keyboards, thanks to his collaboration with Manish Vyas.
My favorite track is the title track - Sky Kisses Earth. Starts off with harmonious voices blended with sitar and santoor and soon the beats kick in... like i said, a new flavor! However, his previous albums like Desert Visions and Hamsafar still remain unsurpassed as far as Im concerned, which is why I give this album a 4.

Further On...Further In.......2005-10-20
.....Another great release from Harry....
He says that this is his blending of American Gospel with his Indian Raga Blues. I didn't know what to expect, but the "gospel" sound is only really strong on one song (Sittin' on Top of the World, done in a light upbeat way). What is noticable, is the lyrics seem more upfront here. While Harry plays his usual tasteful mix of Lap Slide Guitar, Mohan Veena, Banjo, Harmonica and Tamboura, he also utilizes female backup vocals (rich and beautiful), keyboards, and tabla and other percussions, but puts these all backseat to supporting the songs. The result is a pop/R&B sound like Van Morrison at his mellow best. The instrumental fills are more Indian sounding (Mohan Veena slide and Tabla). These are spiritual blues or blues washed in light, the gospel part is that the intent is a blending of East and West spiritual roots music.
These are deep and profound songs but packaged and delivered in an easy listening way. As he sings in Stir A Little Breeze, "The world is a tale, told by a fool...Come see real flowers, of this painful world, their numbers few...This ways' not for the blind"
