Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Sure, Femi Kuti may not be adding any dramatic innovations to his father's patented Afrobeat grooves, but there are subtle modifications. More than that, however, the younger Kuti still has to execute the music's dynamic rhythms and buoyant ensemble horns. And he executes with flair and fury, writing and arranging the entire collection and emerging with an album that would make his father proud.

You might say Femi Kuti is carrying on the family business begun by his late father, the great Fela, with whom Femi played for a while. But instead of the extended Afro-beat workouts that were Fela's musical trademark, Femi has a sound that's more based on '70s American funk--think Tower of Power with some heavy percussion and you're not too far from the mark. While not as outspoken as his dad, Femi can be political, as on "Blackman Know Yourself" or "Victim of Life." At the same time, he's not above celebrating the joys of the flesh on "Beng Beng Beng." His band is hot and incredibly tight, and Femi himself is an excellent instrumentalist. Call it the new generation of Afro-beat, a dynasty continued. Call it an absolute joy. --Chris Nickson

Banging!.......2005-12-03
This album not only has political views in it, carrying on his father's tradition, but the song Beng, Beng, Beng is really banging!!!!!!!!!! This is a great album that anyone who loves
african music. A must have!!!!!!
Femi is not Fela. He renews the legacy and makes it his own.......2002-11-22
Young Femi Kuti played sax is his legendary father's legendary band. You can see him take a little solo in the "Fela in Concert" video, filmed in Paris in 1981. He, better than any other, is well grounded in the Afrobeat tradition. But beginning with Shoki Shoki, he brings this great music into today's musical scene, keeping the rhythms that make this music and adding a completely contemporary sound. This CD is very hot, full of great dance numbers and politically aware lyrics that come across as much more heartfelt and bitter than his dad's. Fela suffered more than Femi, was burnt out of his house and imprisoned by the government, but he always maintained a sarcastic sense of humor. Femi is more urgent, and so is more thought provoking. This fire drives the music, infuses it with feeling and meaning and makes your heart beat stronger.
Amazing . . ........2001-11-11
This album is outstanding, and yet . . . Every time I hear it I want to hear him live. And I did, two days after I heard this CD for the first time. The concert blew me through the wall. He must be heard live to be believed. If you can't make one of his few shows in this country, settle for this album. Otherwise, hie thee to a show and be prepared to get knocked out by his phenomenal beauty, power, and just damn grooviness. Outrageous.
A Must Have For World Music Fans.......2001-11-04
This album is another prize in my collection. Each song seeps with the realism and brutal honesty of Nigeria's state, such as "Blackman Know Yourself" a song speaking to Africans and even African Americans, to come realize who they really are, "Sorry Sorry" blends catchy afro- beats with Femi's displeasure with the government, and the first track "Truth Don' Die" stands out as one of the best songs on the album. Of course most non-Nigerians may recognize Femi Kuti from his performance of "Beng, Beng, Beng" on the World Music Awards, another track on this album and is one of the only songs that talks about his relationship with a woman. "Beng, Beng Beng" delivers and is probably the best song in terms of music, on the CD in my opinion. Femi Kuti has really broken away from his father's shadow, but at the same time his jumpy, outspoken lyrics and Afro-beats payes homage to him. Buy this, you won't be disappointed.
A new Femi fan!.......2000-06-23
I had never seen or heard of Femi Kuti until recently when he performed at the World Music Awards. His amazing performance of "Beng Beng Beng" was the highlight of the event! I was drawn to the amazing rhythmic afro beats in the instrumental aspects of his music and the sensuality in his voice. I bought this CD because of it and am truly impressed with it. "Shoki Shoki has several great tracks besides the above mentioned including, "Truth Don Die" and "Eregele". Femi's music is filled with so much energy that it's hard to stay still when listening to it.

22nd century afro-beat.......2001-10-26
One of the best Afrobeat releases ever - primarily due to the phenomenal mix. While Femi's father Fela's afrobeat succeeded in spite of lacadasical mixes, here a group of mostly french producers lay a thick and drum-heavy house style mix on Femi's contemporary take on afrobeat and the result is fantastic - this double CD pushes afro-beat into the 22nd century with a nod and a wink to King Tubby on the way. The usual afro beat horn arrangements are pushed to the background allowing a unique focus on the rythmic elements. I hope Femi continues in this direction instead of following the usual label-charted path for African mucisians - packing releases with lame guest spots by rappers and rockstars - stay underground, Femi, and keep it real.
Hangs together well.......2000-06-20
While most of the individual tracks are strong, the sequencing gives the disc the feel of an album. Ashley Beedle's sparse E.T. mix of "Beng Beng Beng" kicks it off, and from there each successive track adds layers - overdubbed keyboards and percussion, but more appropriately original instrumental tracks from the SHOKI album sessions - ending with a mix of "Scatta Head" that is clearly influenced by the King Tubby/Prince Jammy school of Jamaican dub, all thunderous rimshots and infinity-echoed urgent vocals. This disc may be one of the strongest releases in the new international house genre.

Rude Awakening!.......2000-06-30
The most impressive thing about this album is the successful blend of the African and Western styles. The remixes of songs like Beng Beng Beng and What Will Tomorrow Bring shows the dexterity in Femi's music and lyrics. Until I heard this CD, I used to be under the erroneous impression, that Femi's music could only sound good in the Contemporary African or rather Afro Beat format. But now I realize how wrong I have been. This CD is a collector's item. Go out and grab your copy, despite its slightly high price tag, the quality of the mixes more than compensates for it.
