is Carmen Consoli the best Italian musical artist of the new generation????.......2005-07-02
it feels good to say that laura pausini and giorgia and irene grandi are doing good things in terms of the new generation of italian pop by WOMEN...but let's face it: a cursory listening of one or two carmen consoli CDs quickly leads one to the conclusion that she is the ONLY contemporary female italian vocalist who is truly INVESTED in her ART....there is no comparison....she is the leading female italian pop singer (describing her as the Italian PJ Harvey sells Carmen short)...IF NOT ...she is The Best...I want to give Nek and Mango and Tiziano a chance...but....I don't know..Carmen's music is a lot more varied ...it's more interesting than those guys'....she may very well be the best period! Bar none!
In a state of needing to listen to this album.......2001-09-23
Although I mostly listen to indie rock from the US, this album is one of my favs for the year. Excellent song writing, great lyrics (even though I'm not always sure of my translation abilities), and she really puts a lot of feeling into her singing. Some of the songs are surprising (such as "Orfeo" and "Parole di Burro") in that they start out VERY mellow but then Carmen really let's loose and the passion in her singing just brings the song away from any kind of mellowness and into an unexpected intensity (don't miss the rougher, less produced version of "Orfeo" 20 some minutes into track 12). The other thing I like about this album is the range of song writing. "Bambina impertnente" has a very punky beginning with PJ Harvey-like distorted vocals. Compare this with "l'ultimo bacio" which is a sad and pretty song with a string orchestra that my parents could appreciate. A great album.

Greater woman songwriter in the world.......2001-04-12
Carmen Consoli is the greater surprise of the 90s: she plays the guitar in a sensual and wild way. If you like the great rock and the great ballads, this CD is for you!
Good but not her best one.......2001-01-24
Carmen Consoli wrote some of the best acoustic songs for guitar of the last decade, then she moved a step ahead towards electronic punk influences ("Mediamente Isterica", Averagely Hysterical, 1998) and again, she was so good in doing it.
This year 2000 release consecrated her as one of Italians favourite artist, and "Stato di Necessità" (Condition of Need) had topped the chart, even though it's one of her poorest release. She composed 11 tracks out of 12, but this time she's just talented and not a outstanding. She stepped back into easy listening pop music, discovering some roots of the most traditional Italian melodies, especially in that nostalgic song that she performed at the Sanremo Festival, "In bianco e nero" (In black and white - Track #5).
Some songs such as "Parole di burro" (Words of butter) will be crucial tracks in Carmen's career (that is: we will find them on her greatest hits album), but the rest of the album is not something to remember. Just quite material. On the other hand, we still have the acoustic Carmen that we love so much in "L'ultimo bacio" (The last kiss), an almost-coming-out song, with that ambiguous line "Thousands of violins played by the wind / the last kiss my sweet girl / in the light memory of a silver rain / the merciless feeling of a no-coming-back".
A good CD, but not her best one.

Check out the other version!.......2004-05-26
This is a great CD. But you should check out the other version of Necessita. The other one is on Staccato Records and is ASIN: B00006LWUB. It is exactly the same music and artwork, but it is nearly $3.00 cheaper and includes a very cool music video of track 6 "Non Mi Basta". You can play the music video on your computer and it really adds value to an already very must have CD. The first song on this CD has a connection to my favorite TV show "The Sopranos". Which is how I found out about the CD.
Excellent.......2004-02-19
Most people's original exposure to this album probably comes from hearing "Certamente" on the Sopranos. If you are worried that it is the only good song on the album, fear not, as this is an outstanding record. Although I speak the language, you do not need to know any Italian to appreciate the beauty of this music. I have played the album for non-Italian speaking friends and they all feel in love with it. I can not reccomend this album highly enough!!!
Very catchy!.......2003-05-26
First heard the song Certamente on an ep of The Sopranos and looked into Madreblu a bit further. Lo and behold I found an Italian group that was a cross between two of my favorite English speaking groups - Ivy and Morcheeba. I've picked up both CDs and I'm looking forward to their next release.
By the way ... anyone interested in this type of music owes themselves a listen to Ivy. One of the few groups in which I would buy their cd without having heard a thing from it.
pleasantly surprised.......2002-10-25
I had heard part of Certamente on an episode of the Sapranos, and was worried that there would only be 1 good song on the cd (however I probably would have bought the whole CD for that song alone). It turns out that several other songs on the cd are just as catchy and beautiful. She has a wonderful voice and the songs are overall very varied. Some have said the music is similar to Depeche Mode but I would say it's much closer to Dido in the vocals, song structure and overall effect.
Melodic alternative pop rock and good vocalist - Great!.......2002-05-17
I am not watching "the sopranos" so I never heard of this band before it appeared in my recommendations. The reviews and amazon comments intrigued me, so I took the chance and purchased it.
Their style is not easy to describe. On this album there is electro pop with a lot of guitars and guitar driven pop rock with electro pop touches. Actually it is a little miracle of equilibrium between synthetic and organic sound, mixing electronic beats and loops with acoustic and electronic guitars and a warm voice.
"Certamente" is a beautiful atmospheric ballad. I think it will turn into my summer song 2002 (better late than never). "Reiko" is a mid tempo electro pop song with a nice bass line and acoustic guitar in the chorus. Next is the upbeat and catchy "Bargiatto", another electro sounding song with electric guitars in the background. "Primanotte" is a mid tempo pop-rock song with a heavy guitar background contrasting with the sweet vocals in the verses. The chorus sticks in your head. One of my favourites is the ballad "La vera entità" with violins and pulsing beat. "Non mi basta" is mixing a folk rock chorus, with acoustic guitars, and electronic loops. Another favourite of mine, the ballad "L'amore sfiorato" is following. The voice is sweet, the chorus is ethereal. The guitars of the background blend so well to the electronic environment. You'll sing the chorus of "Nuda", a catchy electro pop song, along in no time. You might as well feel like dancing on that one, as on the title track. "Necessità" is once again more guitar driven, with electronic loops in the background. The album ends on another beautiful trip hop ballad with a guitar chorus: "Calma". Actually it does not really ends there, there is a hidden trip-hop track which deserves you attention.
I enjoyed the mature voice, which manage to sound ethereal on ballads ("Certamente" for example) and more 'rock' on other songs ("Bargiatto"). Italian is a fluid language, so you do not need to understand to appreciate the songs. Compositions are catchy, with a good sense of melody. A nice experience that I recommend warmly.

Energy and Passion.......2005-10-22
Madreblu has a unique style like no other. Hauntingly beautiful vocals and rhythems. A artistic collection that is sure to rock your sole and become one of your favorite cd's .... even if you don't understand Italian.
You will not be disappointed.
Deserve to be known by a global audience.......2004-11-25
I bought this CD as "if you bought x you will like..." and took a chance. I am a 50 year old artist and I play music to my college drawing students and every year I add new CDs to my "playlist". I just put the stuff on (most of it I know they haven't heard before..) and just wait. Sooner or later they start to ask, what is that?? This is their favorite CD this year and mine too. It has a bit of a dark quality and at first I was offput by the slightly "tinny" sound of the first tracks...but the more I listen the more I like it. It is melodic and epic. This is a great group and and great CD. One of my other current favorites is Stan Ridgeways "Snakebite" which I first heard on an SAS playlist on a flight to Denmark. They love that one too! It's sophisicated stuff and works it's way into your brain. You don't need to speak Italian or even be an italophile.... Take a chance on this great fresh music, you won't regret it.
Featured on "THE SOPRANOS".......2004-05-23
A great CD and the first song on the CD was featured on the hit HBO series "THE SOPRANOS". The song "CERTAMENTE", was also featured on 'PEPPERS AND EGGS' the compilation 2 CD set featuring music from the "THE SOPRANOS". This version of "Necessita" also has a bonus video track, the video is a very professionally produced music video of track six "Non Mi Basta". The music on this CD really captures that special mood you get when you watch "The Sopranos". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This Album Gets Better with Every Listening.......2004-03-24
The first track, "Certamente", may be familiar to Sopranos fans as it is featured on one of the soundtrack albums. Although I don't understand Italian (wish I did), I found a certain consistent rhythm and style on most of the songs. Highly recommended.
