Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05

This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful!!.......2006-03-13

This complilation of music with the various artists on this one CD is great. The choices of the songs in this order seems to flow very smoothly. I recommend the other volumes 1,3 and 4 to complete the set. I have been searching for more in this style but no other can match this Smooth Jazz set. This is a wise investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD!!!.......2001-04-04

I have the entire Best Of Smooth Jazz Collection. The entire set is great, all you need is some chilled wine!

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation of some of smooth jazz's greatest hits.......2001-02-26

What a super compilation. The name is actually a bit of a misnomer. A lot of the music here is not merely smooth jazz instrumentals. Most are actually smooth R&B vocals. No matter, this is a great CD. You may not know all the songs by title, however you will recognize them when you hear the CD. Almost worth the price of admission is the inclusion of the Al Jarreau/David Sanborn/Bob James version of "Since I Fell For You". Every song is a solid 10, plus this is a definite "Shut Up and Kiss Me" romantic CD.

Amazon.com

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.

A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-02-24

Bought a copy for a trip to Kauai. Listened to it while I was there and now all we have to do is slip the disc on to be transported back to the islands (at least if we keep our eyes closed and try real hard to imagine).

The music is sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2007-01-09

I am hooked on this music and could play this CD day and night.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2006-06-01

This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals. I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father! Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it. Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.

5 out of 5 stars 2006 GRAMMY WINNER!!!.......2006-02-25

This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...

Slack key has come into it's own, many prominent guitar players are following these talented Hawaiians around, learning their new tricks and their old traditional ways. (In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)

This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.

All I can say is, MORE! MORE! MORE!

2 out of 5 stars Please, more slack key without vocals!!!.......2005-11-22

That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise!

5 out of 5 stars ERA Rocks.......2007-01-31

I was introduced to ERA via a track on You Tube. I heard something from THE MASS. When I came to Amazon to buy it I found they had two other discs so I bought them as well. This music is haunting ... great for setting a scene ... compelling without being overbearing. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable .......2004-12-29

This cd is absolutely GREAT for your body and mind.
The composer lives in Belgium and I once had the chance to talk to him.
He told me the history behind the composition and that's amazing.
He told me that it was written after several operations he had to undergo, and the music we hear is a registration of the feelings he had in hospital.
He started with some rough lines he had written in 1998 and 2000, and then he created this masterpiece !

4 out of 5 stars Soothing harmony.......2004-04-05

As expected, this album provides great, soothing music. Excellent to listen to while at work early in the morning, and are just starting to really wake up. It's not as good as the first volume, though. Buy that one first, if you're not familiar with the style.

4 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding.......2004-02-12

Era II follows on from the success that Era I had incapsulated. The only reason I didn't rate the CD 5/5 was that the last track 'In Fine' was not a proper way of ending this spectacular CD.
This CD is a must for any Era fan, as Eric Levy has masterminded 9 songs of pure delight and bliss. The gregorian harmonies are in sync with the deep strumming of electronica and makes listening to a nice blend.
Hymne, Mirror and Omeno Sore are the highlights of the track followed by After Time, the female vocalist excels again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-01-31

when i first heard a sample playing in a bar down town, I new right then, "I have to get that cd!" Im a big fan of new age music and i have to say that era and era 2 has done a great job. this music uses the instruments that we use today like the rock guitar and also uses great synthsisers combined with the use of singing. if people like enigma or enya, then you'll love this cd. a must buy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Deuter Tibetan Singing Bowls.......2007-01-03

I enjoyed this album as a great followup to Deuter's earlier singing Tibetan bowls work. I always enjoy his music and have most of his albums over the past 20+ years. This album continues the high quality of spiritually uplifting music that has come to define Deuter.

5 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations.......2006-07-11

I have a stack of book reviews to write, but I just had to sneak in this little blurb before getting to the ceiling-high pile of books squatting accusingly on my desk: Deuter's "Tibet Nada Himalaya 2" CD on the New Earth label is pure pleasure on the ear drums. The rich thrum of the Tibetan bells and crystal bowls in each of the compositions fills the solar plexus with waves of relaxation, and triggers the production of endorphins. Highly recommended. (Jung's "Man and His Symbols" covers a section on the correlation between the sounds of bells, gongs, bowls, etc., and the resultant formation of mandala-like patterns of energy.)

If you live in a noisy place, or get knotted up with tension because of the insanity of this world, try listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Meditation CD.......2006-01-13

I have dozens of yoga and meditation CDs and this has quickly risen to the top as my favorite. It calms and focuses the mind effortlessly and also creates a harmonious environment even when you're not meditating. All the sounds come from natural sources, mostly Tibetan bells and crystal singing bowls, not a one-dimensional droning synthesizer found on many meditation CDs. Now I understand why the Tibetans have been using these sounds for hundreds of years in their practices. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Nice segue to opera.......2007-01-10

I have never liked opera, but this music is a gentle introduction with enough contemporary addition to pique my interest. Very well done. I have also purchased the first Aria CD and also number 3.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite! My favorite of the Arias and favorite CD by far........2006-11-06

This CD speaks to the heart. It expresses powerful emotions of longing, grief, and tenderness. A baring of the soul with such beauty. Clair Marlo's vocals in Lullabye (Sviraj) are absolutely divine. It sends me. Here we are treated to at least three different vocals, not just Rebecca Luker, and they blend and flow so beautifully. It's just wonderful. What a treat. Can't say enough about this CD. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up to an outstanding musical experience.......2006-03-15

ARIA volume 1 was certainly a winner and this follow-up CD is fantastic. I liked the first CD so much that every time I went to the record store or online at Amazon I would look to see if Paul Schwartz and written a sequel. Schwartz selects wonderful works from classical music and re-arranges them so that they maintain the essential spirit and intent of the original but are made accessible for the ears of contemporary listeners. Thus, you owe it to yourself to listen to these gems.

Rebecca Luker's super voice is wonderful as she weaves a mystical mood with Monteverdi's Lament of Arianna; Catalani's "Ebben ne Andro Lontano" from La Wally; "Addio" from Verdi's La Traviata; "Barcarolle" from Offenbach's Contes De Hoffman and "Ave Maria" by Caccini. I looked Luker up on the web and found that she has starred in various Broadway productions. Her voice is incredible and Schwartz integrates her angelic sound into the electronic instrumentation. The "Ave Maria" is somewhat odd, with the strong precussions, but the choir and Rebecca Luker keep it within bounds.

This CD differs from the first ARIA in that we are treated to several instrumental works arranged by Schwartz. "Horizon" is a moody composition anchored by viola and cello. "Cantilena" is a piano solo played by Schwartz, a charming piece that echoes back to Verdi's "Addio" as well as the Croatina Lullabye sung by Clair Marlo.

A second outstanding singer, Clair Marlo, delivers "Sviraj, a Croatian Lullabye" which Schwartz offers in two distinct arrangements, once in Croatian and then again in English.

Faure's "Pavane" is very well done with Marc Antoine playing the guitar solo. The work is improvised so that a contemporary jazz interpretation is offered.

Steve Barton's voice, accompanied by the oboe, offers us "Leiermann" from Die Wintereise by Schubert. This is a dreamy sad odd spacey work with lyrics about a freezing ancient shoeless hurdy-gurdy man. The work is full of mystery and retains Schubert's complexity.

Paul Schwartz makes the outstanding compositions of previous generations come alive for contemporary audiences.

4 out of 5 stars Grandiose and inspiring.......2005-01-31

This is type of music I expect to hear: strong, complex arrangements executed with passion and flair. I first heard Earthbound, and knew instantly that Paul Schwartz is up to something. His work far surpasses others in this genre.

I especially love the vocals here. Some of the intros are a tad cliche, but I can live with that. The voice is convincing and energetic, masterful even. This is one of the best CDs I have bought in years.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic instrumentals.......2006-08-23

Great representative selections from the golden years of instrumental rock led by the Ventures and surf bands. This stuff was so cool that a number of TV shows and movies have used music from this era. I had the cassette version several years ago and the CD has additional tracks. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Companion to Volume 1 (See my review).......2006-07-08

Some of these songs are easily available elsewhere, such as "Because They're Young",
"Telstar", and, of course, "Walk, Don't Run".
But most of the rest are rarely available and not often played.
Besides, they are Great Hits in their own right.
    So . . . buy it, you'll like it! (To paraphrase a '60s commercial).

5 out of 5 stars rarely heard on radio.......2006-02-28

This collection, along with the rock instrumental 50's classic is a great addition to any collection, for you don't hear these recordings hardly at all.The availability of these cd's is a very good thing, as to get all these hits together at an excellant price is extremely hard to do and find. All these songs are original and of course,Rhino, can be counted on for the real stuff. This cd should be given 10 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Instrumentals you never hear on oldies stations.......2005-10-12

The songs on this album, with only a couple exceptions, are ones that just don't seem to get any play on oldies stations.

My favorite song on the album is "Apache." I remember it well from my childhood days. I also really like "Classical Gas," "No Mater What Shape," and "Wheels."

I think the instrumentals selected for this compilation were good choices for the time period represented. I'm glad I bought this album.

I'm going to try to be conservative with my "stars," so that I can reward an exceptionally good album with the fifth star. Please don't think that the three star rating I have given this album means that I didn't like it or would not buy it, if I had it to do over again.

    Tom

    5 out of 5 stars Let's go!.......2005-04-27

This is a fine collection of instrumental rock hits from the 1960s (although it's stetching things to call "Classical Gas" "rock"). All the songs here were Top 30 hits, with over half of them going Top Ten. It's a bit odd that The Ventures only get one song, while B. Bumble & The Stingers and Lonnie Mack each have two songs, but what the heck. There are plenty of Ventures compilation albums if you want the rest of their hits. This album is worth getting for the hard to find "one hit wonder" instrumentals. Recommended to fans of rock instrumentals.

    5 out of 5 stars LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

5 out of 5 stars Great for parties, easy to listen to.......2007-04-04

The Ultra-Lounge series is overall is GREAT. I bought a couple of these CD's at first to try out, and also because I wanted to have some nice background music for a dinner party. I immediately purchased 3 more after that, and I'm really pleased. The songs are cool and set a really nice atmosphere if you're having guests over.

    5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better ultra lounge CD's .......2006-06-04

this is a fun CD to listen to. Not a lot of "serious" salsa here, quite a few novelty tunes, but they get your feet moving and your toes tapping. You will enjoy listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mambo your way to fun.......2004-05-01

Imagine yourself on a wrap-around porch of some grand house basking in the warmth of a summer sunset. Maybe you are simply lounging on a beach with a cocktail in one hand and the hand of the one you love in the other. Perhaps you are in a tuxedo or flaming red cocktail dress and having a wonderfully dry martini (shaken, not stirred) before you get ready to head to the dance floor.

If any of those situations are real or just party of your dreams, this CD from Ultra-Lounge is for you. Rare is the day when you will find some neon decorated, pseudo-tropical paradise lounge or restaurant where drinks were served in coconut cups with little umbrellas. But you can hear the music from them. This CD has the Mambo interwoven in each and every song. You can literally see the band in their white jackets and the lavish costumes on the showgirls as they entertain you.

Yma Sumac drops in for a two song trip down memory lane. You can hear the passion and the fun in her voice. Mariah Carey eat your heart out. The organ tracks are quite amusing, and the Glow Worm Cha Cha will change your life. (Well, not really, but it shouldn't be missed.)

If you ever wanted to visit the famed Coconut Grove or be part of the action with Ricky Ricardo's Band, you need to order this CD. Even if you find that the music is just a throw-back to the days when people in limos were movie stars (and not two girls from Encino using daddy's credit card), it is still a hilarious and joyour romp threw yesteryear.

Fix a highball, add a slice of pineapple, play this CD, and enjoy life.
