About the Artist
Argentinean born-guitarist/composer Alex Fox, arrived in Miami 1984 full of dreams, desires and a whole lot of style.

With his energetic,passionate and unique stage presence it did not take him long to build his fan base.

Classically trained in Buenos Aires, his studies began at the age of 9. With his arrival in Miami, the spicy Latin flavor began to influence his compositions.

He continues to perform at concerts, benefits and private events across the globe. He has just returned from his International Tour where he opened 2 concerts for the Great Tito Puente at the Istanbul Amphitheatre. His talents have been enthusiastically received in France, Germany, Istanbul, Spain, Australia, Indonesia, The Bahamas and across the United States.

It has also been a great honor for him to perform for the President of the United States "Bill Clinton" in 1997. He has also recorded with Julio Iglesias on the CD "La Carretera".

A Classical guitarist and collector of the genre, I can only rave about this cd. I purchased several of these cd's for my close friends and family. The two Paganini pieces are awsome.
Hopefully, Denon will produce more of the same. This time they supply the names of their artists. Well Done! Bravo!

Signature of the master.......2006-09-12

This was the album that first introduce me to Roy's incredible talent. Perhaps it is the sentimental value but it remains, in my opinion, Roy's best. His style is stamped all over these varied pieces - not all are new or original but none could be done with the uplifting blues style like Roy's. If there was any album that could be deamed "Roy Buchanan's Signature" this would be it.

I first heard Roy Buchanan in a music store in Pittsburgh in 1978,I was hooked from then on!!!!!!!!! This is a good intro to his playing! There are several other CDs that are better, but if you haven't heard him before, this CD will give you are pretty fair overview, although He has a version of Hey Joe that's incredible, and Royz Blues can't be left out either. Roy Buchanan is one of the GREATEST PLAYERS ever! He didn't get the recognition that others have received, but deserved it! Get him, listen to him! Listen to "Judy" one of my personal favorites. He makes his axe scream and whine sending the listener into an audio ecstacy! He was truly an underrated axeman! Ramon blues, adventures of Brer rabbit and tar baby, as well as several other cuts showcase his awesome chops!!! he's just the BOMB!!!!!!!!! If you like guitar, or are looking for "another" guitar player to hear. STOP. BUY THIS CD! IF you like a song that will touch you heart? "Judy", for afterwards, I am sure his telecaster had to go out an "recharge!" Roy Buchanan is gone now, but he lives through is powerful guitar playing. PLEASE, just check out what he has to say!!!!!!!! His life/death was somewhat tragic, when more folks hear him, maybe he'll posthumously get his propers!!!!!

when we talk about the blues there is no one that compares to roy except maybe jimi hendrix. Fly night bird is worth the price of this album alone, it is the greatest blues solo i have ever heard in my life, and one that will grab your soul, stretch it, give u goose bumps, make u cry, and feel the mans pain,wow blew my mind, i nearly fell back off my chair when i first heard this shiznit....RIP ROY the greatest blues man to ever have lived *uck bb king, roy is the master while the others are commercial frauds

Burnin.......2002-12-18

From the first steep bend of "Ramon's Blues" to the last haunting note of "The Messiah Will Come Again" this album is packed with the incredible guitar work of Roy Buchanan. Aptly named "Guitar On Fire", this album is full of fast licks, screaming solos and bluesy tunes. This compilation covers three albums from the late seventies of the late, great Tele-master. It's unfortunate that Buchanan was, and remains, pretty much unknown because his guitar work is spectacular.

Most of the songs on this album are instrumentals, which showcase his ability with the axe. "The Heat of the Battle", provides a taste of things to come as he mixes up his solos with the melody. The song, like all his work, is full of raw power and energy. The music flows from his fingers at jaw dropping speed. He's not all about speed though. On "Hidden" he slows it down and plays airy notes with massive amounts of delay, and sliding between notes to give it a spacey feel. The great bassist, Stanley Clarke, provides the low frequencies on the tune, as well as a couple of others. Buchanan covers tunes by Booker T., Joe Walsh, Neil Young and Hendrix. He does a great job on "Green Onions" with the M.G.'s behind him.

It was unfortunate that Buchanan took his life so early. He played as if he was born with a guitar in his hand, and was able to coax sounds of that beat up Telecaster that others would be hard pressed to do even if they were running it through a band saw. This man was a shear force in his playing. He could play loud, or soft, quick or slow. I haven't heard anyone like him. If you're a fan of guitar, then check Buchanan out. You'll be pleased.

A good recording as far as it goes.......2000-09-14

Janos Starker is undoubtedly on of the best cellists of our time, and his technique is effortless on all of these virtuoso selections. Not only is his execution flawless, he is one of a few artists who can make their individual styles come out beautifully in a recording. His tone is strong and compelling in all of the selections, never forced but also never obsessed with smoothing over every trace of an individual performance. As a result the recording has a wonderfully spontaneous and solid flavor. Highlights are David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody and the Falla Danse Rituelle. Unfortunately, it is true that many of these virtuoso pieces simply do not hold the listener time and time again as do, for example, the Brahms cello sonatas or the Dvorak concerto. So though you may listen to this recording many times (and get to love Janos Starker's playing in the process) also buy his recording of the Dvorak.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

The debut effort from this Alabama string band unfolds like a long, pleasantly exhausting evening at a contradance: The tunes are presented mostly in medleys (so as to avoid boredom on both the dancers' and the band's part) and are generally upbeat without being frenetic. The group's instrumentation is a little unusual: Strict traditionalists may not approve of the harmonica or, heaven knows, the banjo ukulele in place of the traditional open-back five-string banjo played clawhammer style. But the twin fiddles of Ed Baggott and Jim Cauthen (mainly playing in unison but occasionally separating into lovely harmony lines) carry the tunes with a sound that is as deeply traditional as any in American music, and if you can listen to these performances without dancing around the room you may need your pulse checked. Highlights include the incongruously beautiful "Muddy Creek/Dead Slave" medley and a very nice rendition of the classic "Rose of Alabama," sung and played on the autoharp by Bill Martin. A must for old-timey music fans.

Emilio Garcia I one of the best chilean musicians. On this disc he plays with some other greats musicians as the bass player Igor Saavedra.
This is a very good fusion music work.

Disk 1 - As Expected.. Disk 2- OMFG!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!!.......2006-07-27

I don't know what the "F" John K. Reed is talking about. Pay his reveiw no mind; both disks are...I really am at a loss for words for expressing how GREAT both disks are.

I am a regular Amazon customer, but I rarely feel the need (or have the time) to write a review. In this case I just had to let it be known how HOT TO DEATH this album is. Especially after reading Mr. Reed's reveiw. I haven't the faintest clue what he is smoking. All that I can say is that Disk 1 has all the usual classics that you know and love like "I Want to be Free", "Sweet Sticky Thing" and "Heaven Must be Like This". All of which, have been most of my favorite songs throughout my life. So basically disk 1's greatness was a given.

Disk 2?!?! It has been a very long time since a song made me smile and feel good all over within the first 15 seconds of listening to it for the first time. "Bi-Centennial" did that to me. It is very smooth and playful. Then another first listen for me was "Good Luck Charm". It's about 9 minutes and 52 seconds long. HOT! HOT!! HOT!!! A Classic I never Heard before!! The Ohio Players really pimp their way through that track sooooooo frickin' hard!! "Good Luck Charm" is a track that if your not careful you could be subconciously persuaded, by that song, to buy a '72 Cadillac Coupe De Ville (on 24s with candypaint) just to cop a mean gangster lean and ride around in blasting that track. It's the most listened to song in my household at the moment. "Time Slips Away" is another Hot CLASSIC I NEVER HEARD until now!

Disk 2 knocked my socks off, period. It basically reaffirmed to me how funky and soulful the Ohio Players are and that they are One of the Best R+B, Funk groups of all time. So much in so that I am now going to collect all of their albums, not just this compalation.

THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE FOR A PLAYER. ADD TO CART AND COP IT TO BE A WITNESS TO GREATNESS!!

Anyone that grew up listening to the Ohio Players in the 70's should own this collection. It covers all ground. It's a keeper. I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, Heaven is owning this CD. It has all the favorites.

The Best Anthology You'll Find.......2001-07-14

A fabulous overview of a very underrated funk band. If you came of age in the mid-1970s and ventured beyond horrible Top 40 pop radio, then inevitably you chanced upon the Ohio Players. Hard-working and prodigious like great jazz players, they were always consummate musicians. This captures the best of their popular 1970s Mercury releases (nearly as interesting for their practically X-rated album covers as the great music within). All of the classics are here ("Love Rollercoaster" and "Fire") but one listen will expose you to the other fine, albeit less heard, cuts that never crossed over to 70s Top 40 but were staples of large city R&B stations -- and curiously making a comeback on "gold soul/funk R&B" radio formats of 2001. (Some of) these guys are still on the road in the summer of 2001, proving that good funk never dies. A worthy investment.

Oh yes, the Players. In my opinion the best funk band ever. From "Skin Tight" there is the X-tremely funky jam of the title cut and the incredible ballad "Heaven Must Be Like This". From "Fire" the incredible title track and check out the drum work on the smoldering ballad "I Want To Be Free". "Honey" is well represented with four cuts including the incredible jazz influenced "Sweet Sticky Thing". The second side includes latter day efforts that are not as well known but just as good. "Who'd She Coo" is so cool that the funk just flows throughout it and from "Gold" they included one of the two new cuts that were included on that release, "Only A Child Can Love" which is superior to Feel The Beat anyway. Check out "Body Vibes" too, wow, funky and jazzy it just flows and love the smokin funk and space sounds on "Funk-o-nots". Best of all these are all the full length album versions not the singles which do not do the Players justice. As a bonus the last three tracks are previously unreleased tracks from the "Jass-Ay-Lady" sessions (it was to be a double album). Too bad there aren't bands like this around anymore. Play On!

Disc 1 - tremendous Disc 2 - disappointing.......2001-03-17

Had the producers elected to include different albeit less popular selections on disc 2 then the compilation could have been absolutely masterful.

If you're at all a fan of 70's funk then this one is required but there's enough uninteresting material to bring down the overall rating.

There was nothing nuanced about Joe Maphis, a star on Southern California's Town Hall Party television show in the 1950s. Playing a double-necked Mos-Rite Special guitar he helped design, Maphis was arguably the first picker to adapt fiddle breakdowns for guitar, and the hell-bent-for-leather title tune was his calling card. Occasionally, he'd turn in a relaxed, swinging performance like "Bully of the Town," or a seamless, well-paced workout like "Guitar Rock and Roll." But mostly he just burned, as on "Flying Fingers." Needless to add, this often worked better live than on record, and the real showstoppers here didn't even appear on the original 1957 album. On four of the seven bonus tracks, Maphis and protégé Larry Collins play rockin' country together like white on rice, especially on the charging "Hurricane," where they pull out all the stops, and the bluesy "Bye, Bye," a perfect balance of flash and restraint. --John Morthland

Joe Maphis was a great player on virtually any stringed instrument. Not many guitar players I know of can keep up with him. This guy was a whiz. The CD "Country Guitar Thunder" with Merle Travis is another must-have.

Joe Maphis had undeniable talent and technique as a flat picking guitar monster. Unfortunately, his records are unlistenable. Why? He rushed the beat so much. It's uncomfortable to hear. Drummers must have hated playing with him. But as another reviewer said, it must have worked better live. Listen to Jimmy Bryant or George Barnes "Country Jazz" to hear better version of this sort of guitar playing.

Smokin' reissue of legendary country guitar ace's debut LP.......2001-02-07

Maphis is perhaps best known today as the guitar ace who mentored teenage rockabilly whiz Larry Collins in the 50s. And though Collins' guitar talent was (and remains) substantial, the incendiary flat-picking style (and the twin-neck electric Mosrite guitar) Collins employed was not only originated by Maphis, but never got better. Augmented with seven bonus tracks (including four blazing duets with Collins) and newly penned liner notes from Rich Kienzle, this reissue of Maphis' 1957 Columbia debut is a fitting memorial to one of the guitar's unsung revolutionaries. (Bear Family's "Flying Fingers" compilation offers five additional tracks - and a shuffled track order - at a premium price.)

Across 19 instrumentals, Maphis fingers fly in lightning quick runs. His renditions of classic fiddle tunes, such as "Fire on the Mountain" and "Bully of the Town," pushed flatpicking to its limits, and set the stage for both country and rock (especially surf) pickers to follow. He recast Earl Scruggs' banjo instrumental "Randy Lynn Rag" for the guitar, and then turned to flatpicking a banjo for his own "Floggin' the Banjo." Elsewhere he shows off his mastery of the mandolin.

Perhaps most exhilarating of all are four tracks from the 1957 EP "Swinging Strings." Teacher Maphis and student Larry Collins play with an interlocked precision that is breathtaking. As one vamps, the other races up and down the frets, only to be met at the end by the ripping leads of the other. When they finally slow to a lope, the interplay is nearly telepathic. Also featured on a few tracks are Maphis' wife Rose Lee, and Johnny Bond.

Maphis' television work (most notably on the Los Angeles-based "Town Hall") led to work as a studio ace (including hit sessions with Ricky Nelson and early rockabilly sides with Wanda Jackson), but for sheer guitar pyrotechnics, his debut shows that he left the gate galloping at full speed.
