Eagle Cries

It's always interesting to learn what inspires an artist, but rarely has inspiration ranged so far, or so consciously, as it does with singer-songwriter Joanne Shenandoah. The award-winning musician is known for stylistic versatility--although she sticks close to folk-rock this time out--but every one of her dozen albums shows consistent vision. Classically trained, a former executive, and a member of the Oneida Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy, Shenandoah has a wellspring of sources to rely on. So while "Heartbeat" and "One Silver One Gold" (a standout featuring a guest appearance from Bruce Cockburn) draw on mythology and belief, "Unexplained" and "Watch Me Through the Night" are more personal. Even when Shenandoah sings of violence and conflict, Eagle Cries retains its message of peace. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring!.......2005-05-21

A thoughtfully compiled assortment of beautifully inspiring songs. Joanne's warm voice, accompanied by mystical musical elements and strong societal messages will take you back to your roots, whether native or non-native.

My personal favorite is 'One Silver One Gold'...
"They left a trail of destruction,
cut through the mountains, rivers and streams.
They scarred the earth as they devoured
our children and ancient dreams."

Wonderful!

This CD is just fantastic. I own a number of Native American CD's and this quickly became one of my favorites. Her voice is wonderful, her songs have meaning and musicianship, and it all melds together seamlessly.

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD DESERVES A GRAMMY.......2002-02-25

JOANNE'S LATEST IS BY FAR HER BEST. IT ENCOMPASSES HER TRADITIONAL HAUDENSAUNEE ROOTS WITH A CONTEMPORARY FLAIR. I ESPECIALLY LOVE "FEATHER FROM HEAVEN", "ONCE AGAIN" AND "DANCING ON MOTHER EARTH". THE BACKGROUND VOCALS PROVIDED BY HER DAUGHTER, LEAH AND SISTER, DIANE ARE STELLAR. THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY JOANNE SHENANDOAH FAN, OR FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO OWN A TRULY MAGNIFICENT PIECE OF MUSIC. HOPEFULLY, THIS ONE WILL BE NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY AND SHE WILL WIN. SHE DESERVES IT!

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite music!.......2002-01-22

Joanne Shenandoah does it again! I first heard her live at a powwow in Florida 10 years ago and bought all her cds available at the time. Now I never miss one.....and this one may very well be the best. Exquisite voice, exquisitely moving music. Try Loving Ways next - my favorite song of all times is her To Those Who Dream on Loving Ways.

If I haven't already given this CD for my family's and friend's birthdays, it will be under their Christmas trees! This is the richest of Joanne's albums. I listen again and again, gleaning new meanings, hearing soulful refrains, and find myself leaning into the melodies, writing down the words, savoring each line. Eagle Cries is thought provoking, touching, healing, inspiring. Truly lovely!
