The 14-year-old winner of the 1988 All-Japan Tsugaru-Shamisen Competition, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, began his studies on this traditional 3-stringed Chinese instrument at the age of six. For several more years, the young artist continued to develop his talents and for two consecutive years in 1995 and 1996 was awarded the prestigious top prize in the Tsuguru-Shamisen National Competition held in Hirosaki, Japan.
Receiving high acclaim in Hogaku (traditional Japanese music) inspired Agatsuma to continue exploring the unique qualities of the Tsugaru-Shamisen, and in turn, his own music speciality. On his sophomore release, Beams, Agatsuma blends his many musical influences of jazz, rock fusion and Latin based grooves with traditional Japanese folk music.

Masterpieces of Style, Elegance And Beauty.......2007-02-15
"Less is more" applies to this album of eight remarkable tunes, two of which are his very own compositions, "Re: Person I Knew" and "Very Early." My favorites include "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" "It Might As Well Be Spring," and "Stairway To The Stars." These are masterpieces of style, elegance and beauty.
Listening to this lovely album creates an atmosphere of coziness and you'll surely fall in love with Bill Evans' tastefully exquisite piano playing style.
With my heartfelt recommendation for your listening pleasure always and ever!

ONE OF THE GREATEST JAZZ BALLAD PERFORMANCES--EVER!.......2006-02-28
As ballads should be, these tunes are generally taken at a slow pace but never maudlin. They are in fact very beautiful and spectacular, as Bill shows a different side to what are mostly very familiar ballads loved by jazzmen. Evans usually states the theme at a slow pace and accelerates into a faster pace after one pass, springing off of Israels' bedrock phrases.
The Piece D' Resistance, the modish "Re: Person I Knew" (an oblique reference to Keepnews) is a shot across the bow of 1960's pianism with Evans reeling off mighty, wondrous statements that are breathtaking, crystal clear, and with a relaxed intensity. Israels' first recorded bass solo with the trio is both deeply emotional and technically adept showing he is a worthy successor to La Faro. "Very Early" is a fabulous convoluted jazz waltz that shows off another view of Bill's compositional and soloing skills. Israels' bass commentary and his solo are a joy to hear. Tadd Dameron's super ballad "If You Could See Me Now" is pure block-chorded beauty (especially on 'the bridge'), as is "Polka Dots and Moonbeams", both shifting gears after one pass through with wondrous, dazzling single-noted lines that never stray from lyricism. "I Fall in Love Too Easily", "Stairways To The Stars" (note the fabulous Paul Motian brushwork and Evans' blazing coda), and "It Might As Well Be Spring" are total lyrical examples of what a jazz trio should be, with all members contributing SIMULTANEOUSLY and INVENTIVELY to the flow of the music from theme to solo to recapitulation. Paul Motian does some mighty, but subtle drumming throughout providing excellent support within the trio framework. An Essential Jazz Recording. My HIGHEST Recommendation! Five LYRICAL Stars!!
(Note: Bill Evans had a crucial choice to make: whether to play classical piano or jazz piano. We are so lucky that he chose jazz, probably to the detriment of his health, and brought alot of his classical techniques along for the ride. It was never on better display than on this CD.)

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

¿Qué son The Presets? Una invitación a averiguarlo y clasificarlo según los propios referentes históricos musicales. Esa es la magia de The Presets tienen un algo "universal" y atemporal que se encuentra en su elepé Beams y en sus sencillos Blowup, Are you the one? y Down down down.

now for something completely diff er ent .......2007-02-06
Based on that track, one would envision an "electronic punk" band.
The CD starts off with a toe-tapping,
"B Movie theme" of a song in Steamworks, rolls into a true-rock sound with
Are You the One, and follows up with the dancy, Down Down Down.
Up next, we take a detour into the classic '80s sound of Girl and the Sea,
and an interlude into two instrumentals:Black Background(at 1:37 seconds long) and Worms .
While moody, I think the songs lack some depth in ambience that should define mood music.
Or maybe that's 'cause I can't wait for Kitty in the Middle of It to start ...
Hill Stuck(at 1:41 seconds in length) does porvide a nice ambience, right before
an off the wall track in Girl(You Chew My Mind Up). I Go Hard, I Go Home shows
a nice, dark techno side of the Presets, spiced up with some interesting vocal bits.
From here, we delve into an almost neo new-wave feel of Bad Up Your Betterness,
and cap the CD off with the surprising title song Beams.
Another instrumental, the track Beams is a cut above the other songs, and completely
out of place on this disk ! It's dreamy; with horns and a great ambience that leaves you
with a feel-good notion that most of the noise on this disk was crafted by someone with
real talent. Not that I liked the song all that much...but that's cool .
In review, The Presets / Beams CD music is different than anything else in my collection ,
it defies any genre because of the diverse music tracks, and is well worth the price of admission..
live it, play it over and over again, get a feel for the Presets !

Product Description
The stunning fourth Indelible Grace album continues in the vein of the first three, putting brand new music to hymns of the past. From Emily Deloach's powerful performance of the John Newton hymn "I Asked The Lord," to the exuberant "Lead On O King Eternal" (sung by Taylor Sorensen), to Jars Of Clay's Dan Haseltine's longing take on the title track, Beams Of Heaven: Indelible Grace IV captures timeless truth for this generation and beyond.Customer Reviews:

Grace indelible,
--Jeffrey
I listen to this CD almost daily........2006-06-27
Superb.......2006-05-03
Here you will find songs of joy and of comfort with words that are packed with meaning in every phrase and with tunes that a pleasure to sing and capture the intent of the words for our generation's musical taste. It is, in my opinion, a step above most contemporary Christian music.
A variety of artists perform these songs, some familiar to IG fans, some new. If I had to pick one song as my favorite, it would probably be Jeremy Casella's rendition of "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah", which is both memorable and profound, but playing favorites does a diservice to the album as I really can't complain about any of the songs here. I find that I like them all and prefer to listen to the CD all the way through.
Surely, the words from one song on this excellent album are true:
A thousand men could not compose
A worthy song to bring
Yet Your love is a melody
Our hearts can't help but sing!
I recommend that you buy this CD and lift your voices high.

Album Description
The 14-year-old winner of the 1988 All-Japan Tsugaru-Shamisen Competition, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, began his studies on this traditional 3-stringed Chinese instrument at the age of six. For several more years, the young artist continued to develop his talents and for two consecutive years in 1995 and 1996 was awarded the prestigious top prize in the Tsuguru-Shamisen National Competition held in Hirosaki, Japan.Receiving high acclaim in Hogaku (traditional Japanese music) inspired Agatsuma to continue exploring the unique qualities of the Tsugaru-Shamisen, and in turn, his own music speciality. On his sophomore release, Beams, Agatsuma blends his many musical influences of jazz, rock fusion and Latin based grooves with traditional Japanese folk music.
Customer Reviews:
Japanese Tsugaru-Shamisen as you have never heard it played .......2005-01-24
While its history is one of use in classical Japanese music, the recent revival of this instrument and Agatsuma's incorporation of this traditional instrument into modern music is one of the most successful integrations of this kind. The flavor of the music is most definitely Japanese folk, but the beats are clearly western.
This CD highlights the use of the Tsugaru-Shamisen in a variety of styles of music. Recorded on his first national tour, these original compositions highlight the ability of this instrument to be incorporated into modern music. They also establish Agatsuma as the master of the instrument not only in his ability to play it to a variety of styles of music but also composing music that allows the blending to be seamless as well as pleasing to the ear.
The opening track of Beams is an upbeat fusion of electronica and the Tsugaru-Shamisen. Almost William Orbit in style, it features driving rhythms in the background which emphasizes the Tsugaru-Shamisen as well as Agatsuma's ability to play the instrument in harmony with the style of music.
In Memory of NY gives us an "on the streets" flavor, somewhat jazz, somewhat pop, and most definitely Japanese. This composition is well constructed and features hot jazz and cool sound of the Tsugaru-Shamisen.
Solitude has a "new age" feel to it, like a gentle breeze through the Cherry blossoms. This piece features piano and Tsugaru-Shamisen, and highlights Agatsum's mastery of the instrument.
Accustom is a very short piece, highlighting Japanese drumming with the Tsugaru-Shamisen, and adding light elements of electronica to fill in the background, very successfully softening the rough edges but being very effective.
Fun is exactly that. We experience Japanese folk music, with a Latin jazz beat, funky piano, and it is a very surprising upbeat piece. Again we are presented with another style of music where the Tsugaru-Shamisen feels right at home.
On Bourbon St. challenges the ear with a very blues beat that can be found in a very Japanese sound. And it works! Blending the Tsugaru-Shamisen with only a drum leaves you snapping your fingers as you recognize the beat and delight in the blending.
We return to the ambient/new age feeling with a short piece called In the Rain which again features the Tsugaru-Shamisen blended with drums and electronica, as we experience the force of a storm and gentleness of a Japanese inspired rain.
And in the track Groovin we again have a jazz piece with piano, drums and instead of guitar we have the Tsugaru-Shaminsen. Again, another great composition that is upbeat and brings your feet to the dance floor.
Curfew is a very traditional piece, overlaid on an orchestrated background. While most of the CD focuses on East meets West, this piece is more of a very Japanese composition. This is a very dramatic piece that gives us the roots of instrument in a very impressive composition.
The final track is called Blown Away and the energy level is kicked up to give this CD a rocking finish. Elements of Rock, jazz and the ever present Japanese folk music are blended flawlessly to leave you wanting to hear the CD again.
After listening to this CD, you can understand how Agatsuma`s first CD in 2001 received the "Album of the Year" award at the Japan Gold Disc Awards. This is a wonderful addition to your music library and if you have not heard Agatsuma before, this can be a great introduction to this style of music. mafoster

The music is great, though, when it's actually playing, despite the fact that you don't get the entire piece...

Amazon.com essential recording
Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:
