Zion Roots

Editorial Reviews

Anyone enthralled by the sprawling Ethiopiques series on Buda Musique may find a fascinating if unintentional addition to that series in Abyssinia Infinite's Zion Roots. Whereas the Ethiopiques series lovingly compiles far-flung tracks recorded during the "golden age" of the Ethiopian record industry in the early to mid-1970s, Zion Roots is an illustration of the astounding creativity and life still coursing through modern Ethiopian music. Although Abyssinia Infinite boasts a cast of Ethiopian musicians alongside producer Bill Laswell (heard here on acoustic guitar) and some of his frequent collaborators like percussionists Karsh Kale and Aiyb Dieng and accordionist Tony Cedras, this is essentially the second album by Gigi, the Ethiopian singer with an overworldly voice whose self-titled debut featured her alongside such jazz heavyweights as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Fans of a more traditional Ethiopian or world-beat sound may be pleased to discover that "Zion Roots" is a much more organic-sounding recording than was that album or its Bill Laswell remix, Illuminated Audio. While there are some modern production elements here that bear Laswell's stamp, like backwards acoustic guitar effects and layered keyboards, for the most part this is acoustic trance music that never loses its connection to the traditional songs--in some cases hundreds of years old--Gigi sings here in new arrangements. On tracks like "Gela," which features a mesmerizing kirar (an ancient Ethiopian harp) pattern, the richly percussive "Gedawo" or the entrancing hymn "Ethiopia" that closes the album, Gigi proves that Ethiopian music has a bright future as well as a rich past. --Ezra Gale

Album Description

The culmination of this journey is Zion Crossroads, Harris' debut recording on Telarc. Inspired and informed by his travels to various parts of Africa over the past decade, the album captures some of the most enduring elements of African-American music - blues, reggae, soul and so much more - and infuses them with a sense of history, social consciousness and spirituality.

Harris gets help on the path to Zion Crossroads from producer Michael G, the guitarist and co-founder of Easy Star All-Stars, the New York-based reggae collective that crafted Dub Side of the Moon (2003) and Radiodread (2006). Like Harris, he sees the project as a powerful convergence of style, vision, history and culture: "The marriage of Corey's socially conscious lyrics and the revolutionary sounds of reggae make for a potent musical cocktail that arouses the body, mind, and spirit."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Corey Harris is an underrated musician.......2007-07-25

i saw him in concert touring with the 'back porch blues' 8 years ago and his sound was haunting, authentic southern blues, he obviously did his homework. as he did in albums linking the blues to other african american music around the world. this time he links the blues to real jamaican reggae and its no stretch to hear that he has once again done his homework. "Walter Rodney" is a standout song. he is obviously a great student of music and this is a solid cd.

5 out of 5 stars Zion Roots Mysterious.......2006-08-19

Really nice music to listen to while relaxing or chilling later at night. There is a scense of mystery in this and GiGi's first album which I really like also. The other positive reviews speak for them selves.

5 out of 5 stars Zion Roots.......2004-10-09

Wow, I've never heard Ethiopian music, this is fantastic, the more you listen the more it gets you, each song unfolding into the next it comes close to creating a trance, her voice has an echo of Joni Mitchell in it, the whole thing is just fab and not too overproduced , it retains more of its roots. Has tradiional and new compositions by her .

5 out of 5 stars An explosion of creativity.......2004-04-06

Featuring Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw, Zion Roots is an explosion of creativity sprung amidst the opportunities present since the relenting of a harsh military regime whose strict curfews shut down live bands and all but destroyed Ethiopian rock. A veritable explosion of sound, celebration, and passion by Abyssinia Infinite, Zion Roots features: Bati Bati (3:45), Gela (6:08), Alesema (7:26), Monew Natana (5:12), Embe Ashafergne (4:27), Gole (6:03), Aba Alem Lemenea (4:15), Gedawo (4:42), Lebaye (4:47), and Ethiopia (6:15) Total Playing Time 53:13.

5 out of 5 stars Raising the standards.......2004-03-27

Gigi's long awaited new album has not failed its promise. This new cd follows the same general lines of her previous album, with less jazz-fusion touches and more traditional Ethiopian sound.

To this album Gigi brought several different Ethiopian rhythms. There is a song with a touch of Guragegnya (Embe Asheferegne), and an Agaw song (Monew Natana). Other than that, Gig sticks to Amhara based music, with the two catchiest Ethiopian scales (Bati and Tizita). There are, of course, touches of funk that probably come from Bill Laswell.

It is interesting to compare this music, aimed at world music market, with music that is being aimed at Ethiopians more exclusively. While Gigi's music is very rhythmic, it is not dance music, while practically all music that is produced for the Ethiopian market is dance music.

Gigi's great contribution is that her work offers the highest standards of production - in sound, arrangement and instrumentation. She thus opens the way for Ethiopian musicians to the broader world market, and brings the Ethiopian sounds to many fresh, non-Ethiopian ears.

Gigi has an average voice in the traditional Ethiopian sense, but her voice is perfect for the setting that the album offers. It is sensual and reflective, and allows the general "world" mood that is required. The playing of the other musicians on this cd is amazing, from the traditional Kirar and washint to the more modern saxophone. The tenor sax is played by Moges Habte, who is, in my opinion, the leading Ethiopian sax player today, and deserves greater exposure.

My favorite track is the last, "Ethiopia", that features a beautiful, haunting loop behind Gigi's best singing.

This cd is essential for anyone interested in Ethiopian music, world music, or just good music that feels great.

Album Description

Though he never became a household name like King Tubby or Lee "Scratch" Perry, Glen Browne was one of the most important bandleaders and producers of reggae's mid-1970s golden age. The rhythms he created on his Pantomine label rank among the most frequently used in all of reggae — the "Dirty Harry" rhythm alone exists in scores of vocal, instrumental and deejay versions. The Way to Mt. Zion brings together 14 Glen Browne singles, some featuring his passable but unexceptional singing, others his passable but unexceptional melodica playing, and all featuring an all-star cast of supporting musicians and Browne's impeccable studiocraft, not to mention the remixing prowess of King Tubby on a number of dub versions. Highlights include the title track, the horticultural anthem "Lambsbread/Lambsbread Dub" and all of the skull-pounding dubs. Unfortunately, the three melodica showcases are easily skippable. But even with the slow moments, this is an essential roots-reggae document. — Rick Anderson (All Music Guide)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Glen shows us the way.......2001-03-21

The Way to Mt. Zion by obscure and master producer Glen Brown, shows an artist that is highly innovative and was ahead of his time. This album brings together a dub side as well as a singer, composer, harmonizer and melodica performer reminiscent of Augustus Pablo. A very multi-facted artist Glen Brown is. This album also includes the best of the best of session players, Sly & Robbie, Earl Wya Lindo, Carlton Barret, and many others to bring together a fine and well produced album. Each track weaving together a well told story in reggae music. Standout cuts: Lay Lady, Clensiness Dub, The Way to Mt. Zion, Youths of Tomorrow.

Looks like a Max Romeo studio recording huh? It is not, cool album cover though. What it is is a so-called "best of" compiling Max's Cheesiest efforts. Dont be fooled, if you dig the rootsy "War inna Babylon" and "Open the Iron Gates" you will dislike this poop-ilation, weak rhythem, corny love songs, not Max at his best. Also stay away from the Max Romeo compilation "Coming of Jah".
