Conguero Poncho Sanchez is one of the movers and shakers in Latin jazz. But while growing up in the 1960s, he was obsessed with the classic Stax and Motown sounds, and this influence peeks out from time to time in his music. Never more so than on Out Of Sight!, which actually functions as a tribute to his hero James Brown. Here Sanchez makes it funky with such soulful luminaries as Billy Preston, Ray Charles (who sings his classic "Mary Ann"), Sam Moore (of Sam And Dave fame), and Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. Suffice it to say, Sanchez's band and guests dig a groove deep enough to make the Godfather proud. They don't rely on the hits either; instead, choosing some lesser-known 1960s boogaloo gems and Brown jams, as well as some groovy new originals. Sanchez is surprisingly impressive on vocals here, but it's the tight and funky Latin arrangements that make this so super bad. --Tad Hendrickson

      5 out of 5 stars A true alto legend.......2002-04-10

I agree with what is said in the other reviews of this CD here. I'd like to add that is a fantastic album, all the tunes are played brilliantly, all the musicians are wonderful-I have since bought all the available CDs of pianist Jack Wilson, though they are very hard to find for some reason. He is a master pianist and it's a shame more people haven't heard of him. His lines are superb and his sense of swing is as good as Oscar Peterson's!
As for Anderza, whom I rate as one of my all-time favorite alto sax players, along with Cannonball Adderley, Phil Woods and Vincent Herring, all his fans ask the same, big question: what in the world happened to him? Why did he make one (brilliant) record, then vanish? Incidentally, I put this question to respected jazz critic Dan Morgenstern recently, and he too had no idea what happened to this unique player-and let's not forget composer as well. His own compositions on the album Outa Sight, Freeway and Benign, are highlights.
I srongly recommend this album to all jazz lovers!

4 out of 5 stars What ever happened to Earl Anderza?.......2000-07-01

This CD is excellent and makes you wonder why this great alto player was never heard from again. In fact I have never even seen his name on another piece of jazz music--not even as a sideman. This disc makes you want more. If anyone knows what happened to this man, a lot of jazz fans would love to know. I recommend this CD to all jazz collectors. Anderza had a very unique style and a superb command of the altissimo register of the alto sax.

5 out of 5 stars A true jazz legend before his time........1998-09-16

Classic jazz that is still hot today. A great CD. Every song holds your attention and grabs your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding recording by an original, if quirky, player.......1998-07-15

I have the LP of this and will buy the CD promptly. This is a very early 1960s recording by an alto player unknown to me before this album. To put Mr. Anderza in some context, I'd say that he's a little like a Republican Eric Dolphy -- schooled and advanced harmonically, but polite and good-natured about using his advanced abilities. It's fun stuff, however, whether your harmonic sensibilities lean towards Dolphy or Carter. And based on the names I've invoked, you might correctly guess that Mr. Anderza's tone is good. (No "I wish I were Trane, but I won't be in a zillion years" Primal Squeals that would send M. Selmer packing here, thank God.)

Jack Wilson, a good player, handles the piano. He also plays some harpsichord, which I guess was a fairly well-tuned (for once) piece of furniture that happened to be in the studio that day. It's fun without being a gimmick.

This is a good record. I'm afraid that I don't know what happened to this man (perhaps t! ! he CD liner notes will tell us), but it's too bad that Mr. Anderza did not grace us with more of his music (or maybe I'm just an idiot and he did).
