5 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow Up Album and Essential Listening!.......2005-12-23

Led Zeppelin's excellent follow up second album is essential listening especially if you are into rock guitar wizardry. Jimmy Page continues playing some excellent rock guitar here and shows why at one time he was the most requested session guitarist in the industry. Tracks like "Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker", "Living Loving Maid" and "Ramble On" are all classic rock standards. Now, we get this album very well remastered and in a very nicely done mini-lp replica gatefold sleeve as well. Great sound quality, great packaging, this is a must have in any classic rock lover's collection. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected........2000-09-19

I saw the cover photo for this one... four guys with HUGE drums... and thought, yep! I want that!

BUT what did I get? Bamboo flute music. The drums are just backing for a flute.
What a let down.

I was expecting driving, thunderous drums that would shake the foundation of my house... not on this album. The rhythms, while slightly syncopated and infrequently complex, never sit center stage, and never move.

And THREE versions of the SAME song? On a CD with 15 tracks, I might tolerate it, but on one with 9 tracks... It's just filler.

The only track that stands out is the last one: Dzauku, which was written by Kodo.

If you want Japanese drum music that could be used as background music, get this CD.
If you want Japanese drum music that shakes the pillars of Heaven, get the "Best of Kodo", or even Kitaro's "Best of Ten Years."

      Album Description

With musical experience ranging from centuries-old Nagauta to jazz, rock and electronic glitch, the On Ensemble has crafted a repertoire of ground-breaking taiko music. "Dust and Sand", On Ensemble's first studio-recorded album, is a perfect example of the group's eclectic sound. Japanese flute, Tuvan throat-singing, koto, turntable and a host of percussion instruments accent and contrast the taiko (Japanese drum). The album was recorded over a one-year span in the group's small studio and this process imbued its own character on the group's music. Multi-track layers of percussion and the use of found-sound and electronically manipulated samples characterize this album as the ensemble further explores the musical possibilities of this ancient drum.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fusion Of Old And New, East And West.......2006-10-26

I was fortunate enough recently to see On Ensemble in concert (ON '06: ROUROU) in Little Tokyo, downtown Los Angeles in a small, yet intimate venue (David Henry Hwang Theatre). Patrick Graham, another great percussionist in his own right, was the guest musician from Montreal, Canada. Not that listening to their CD isn't a moving experience...it certainly is! But, listening to them is like listening to the Blue Man Group. Half the performance is visual. The choreography in Taiko drumming is half the performance. I encourage anyone who has bought their CD to also get their DVDs as well. The choreography and lighting cues make the performance all that much more interesting and creative.

Creative is almost an understatement when describing these artists! Amazing how they fuse the modern with the traditional. They studied traditional Taiko in Japan, honing their craft. Along with traditional Taiko drums made in Japan they fuse a modern drum set, the tambourine and record scratching in their musical mix. Speaking of the tambourine, Patrick Graham did a solo number using several tambourines...I never realized how many sounds nor how deep a sound one could get from the tambourine. At first I cynically thought, a solo on tambourine? I'm sure others felt and thought the same as I did at the beginning, but at the end of Graham's solo number we were all spellbound! Google his name. Amazon edited my reference to his webiste.... :-(

I really can't wait for On Ensemble to come out with another CD...and live concert! Catch them if they're in your neighborhood. They do play around the nation. According to their website they've played in and around Los Angeles (their hometown), San Fransisco, Montreal, Hawaii, New York, etc. so they should be coming to your city soon. Check their website: ...Amazon edited my reference to their site too so google them. :-\

These guys are amazing! And that's not hyperbole!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for drummers (and everybody else too).......2005-11-28

What a fantastic adaptation to a medium that has not represented taiko very well. Taiko is such a visual art form, that straight-forward recordings of songs tend to lose the vitality of a live performance. It is so rare to hear a taiko recording that has been adapted to the strengths and weaknesses of the album format.

What am I trying to say? That On Ensemble has made an unquestionably great album. If you have seen them live, you know that in addition to their musical chops, they have beautiful choreography and movements. For the album, they didn't just record songs without the dance. They took the time to rework and adapt the material, and that time is well-spent.

It is an album that highlights their varied backgrounds, most notably their time spent mastering the turntable and Tuvan throat-singing. The sound of the koto on Gengakki is part-way between a stately court instrument and a slap bass, and the resulting song is both beautiful and funky. Overall, the attitude of the album is slow and relaxed, picking up speed on only a few numbers like Zeecha, which is certainly different than the standard taiko sound of loud-and-fast-as-possible.

In some ways, "Dust and Sand" plays like electronica written by a drummer. There are no harsh or distorted electric sounds, but the home-studio Pro Tools-esque sound effects are evident, and they mix well with the earthy sound of instuments made of wood and cowhide. It will get your head bobbing without resorting to techno cliches, or lazy drum machine programming.

The song-writing is rhythmically complex, which should give percussionists something to smile about, but while most drummers' songs eschew melody for extended drum solos, On Ensemble keeps the groove going and the non-drum-geek listener engaged throughout. Their drumming really is rhythmic melody, which is a central concept to a taiko player, but a breath of fresh air for the standard listener. You have to listen to understand, but it is very satisfying.

I give this five stars in the hopes that others are willing to give this album the chance it deserves. Spread the word, and move aside Kodo -- a new group is making music that stretches the boundaries of taiko.

4 out of 5 stars Fab CD from the Fab 2 or so.......2006-08-31

Shonen Knife has such a long history and such a wide range of material that each album is fun discovery. In spite of its snappy melodies and catchy guitars, Heavy Songs rates just behind Brand New Knife, Rock Animals, and Happy Hour - which by their standards make this a breezy, fun record full of humor and fun.

All the songs on the A-side are great, and the flip is solid if no revelation. But for most, this record definitely passes the test, and it unfailingly puts a grin on your face. Even the "heaviest" song here - "Heavy Song" - is a slow but wonderfully amusing story of Atsuko's attempts at dieting. Of course, SK fans will find this further evidence that they've rebounded from Michie's departure and their only truly disappointing CD, "Strawberry Sounds." Shonen Knife are a consistent and appealing band with an honesty that can't be manufactured.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun album!!!!.......2005-03-15

Although it's called 'Heavy Songs' the songs on this album are all great fun and positive. The band sond is great form with lots of tight playing and catchy melodies as you would expect from Shonen Knife. The songs are so infectious it is almost beyond belief. My personal favourite on here is 'Golden Years Of Rock & Roll' which is a wonderful touching and uncynical tale which tells of the joy of being a rock music fan. Other highlights are the all out disco of 'A Boogie Monster' and the alternating vocals on 'Whatever'. I'm hooked on this album!

5 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST ALBUM - and thats saying something!.......2004-12-07

This is a really solid album. Very tight sounding with great songs. Like a more poppy Ramones, with a but of spice thrown in. This band has gotten better over the years as players and writers. Forget their cult status, this is just a plain old really great rock/pop album.

5 out of 5 stars Never enough Knife!.......2004-06-24

Ah, Japan. thank you, thank you, for this awesome band. you've never seen [seen? more like heard] anything like it! ah, i melt every time i hear them. after the first time you hear them, you'll be hooked. this is the musical equal of candy. all i can say is, yum

5 out of 5 stars First in trio of classic hard edge rock.......2001-05-05

Everything finally came together for Xtc and enabled the band to produce one of their finest albums. The strong songwriting, lyrical wit and odd (but rich) melodies made their appearence. Steve Lilywhite's production only enhanced this great album. The sound quality is terrific. Ian Cooper manages to capture all the production's richness without sacrificng anything. Moulding finally emerges from Partridge's shadow as a songwriter producing two of his finest songs. Andy Partridge arrives as both a singer and performer with this album. He finally found his "voice".

This limited edition is packaged in a miniature LP style sleeve that duplicates the original artwork for the album (right down to the label). The bonus tracks that were haphazardly strewn on this first Cd version are not put at the end where they belong. I'd highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars sublime traditional Japanese drumming.......2006-11-07

A little over a year ago, I bought the Portland Taiko Group's album, "Big Bang," a beautifully-made collection of traditional and modern flavors of Japanese drumming. This thunderous introduction to taiko instantly became a favorite in my collection and I hungered for more traditional music of Japan, so I picked up this album from Wadaiko Matsuriza. As much as I love the American group's work, master drummer Masaya Takashino's ensemble, based in Hachioji City, takes it to another level in this flawless recording.

Few genres of music have such an electrifying impact upon people of diverse origins as Japanese drumming, which is why recordings like this one continue to proliferate worldwide. Like the works of Bach, Beethoven, and the "Chant" albums from the Christian monks, it's an experience of sound that everybody can relate to and enjoy.

        5 out of 5 stars Foreign Colture.......2005-10-23

If you are a colture person this CD is for you. Enjoy the intence yet soothing sound of drums that sound with a story behind it. Every time I hear them I relize how disiplend they are. Enjoy.

This is a fine CD that comes from one of the most prominent solo percussionests. Evelyn Glennie makes percussion music of this caliber seem easy to perform.

Glennie shows her talent of improvisation in the first selection, titled "Michi". This is my favorite piece on the album because it shows the diversity of the realm of solo marimba.

I highly suggest this CD to anyone who wants to listen to marimba or percussion music. It's a great addition to any music collection.

Other albums I recomend are "The Music of Joseph Schwantner" and "Shadow Behind the Iron Sun". Schantner is known for his extremely radical yet amazing music. "Shadow Behind the Iron Sun" is one of Glennie's latest CDs that exploits her amazing improvisational skills (it is complete improvisation!).
