Honor The Earth Powwow: Songs Of The Great Lakes Indians

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
The powwow is traditionally a gathering of Indian peoples to address tribal problems and form consensus, but most importantly in modern times it has become an opportunity to gather tribes together to honor the earth and the Creator in celebratory drumming, dancing and song. The powwow recorded in July 1990 by Mickey Hart (ethnomusicologist and drummer) and Dr. Thomas Vennum, Jr. (of the Smithsonian) is characteristic in that its repertoire includes traditional song styles as well as new songs composed for a son overseas in the Air Force during WWII, exemplifying a tradition of war songs sung for protection before battle. Such songs have in recent times been composed for each branch of the armed forces, illustrating how tradition is adapted to new contexts.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Powwow CDs Out There.......2002-01-08

This CD is yet another jewel from Mickey Hart's "The World" series, this time focusing upon powwow music. Despite the growing interest in Native American culture these days, there isn't alot of good, authentic Native American music. Of course, this might be expected given the wide diversity of Native American music styles, but there is one style tha tends to unite a great many groups: powwow music. Powwow music serves to bridge boundaries between nations and even between the past and present. It is perhaps one of the most representative forms for Native American music as a whole (or at least, in the United States and Canada). The music on this CD comes from the northern style, from the Honor the Earth powwow to be more specific. It is all authentic and was recorded on site. This is a great CD if you are inerested in learning about powwow music and provides a good point of reference. As other reviewers have said, it is not some gofy new agey CD, but actual powwow music.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Northern Tunes.......2000-03-06

Well theres not much of a choice of pow wow music when you are trying to buy from a store or online. But thats a given everyone knows you have to get pow wow music at pow wows. This the the only legitimate one I've seen online. Its not a compilation for new agers, so if you are looking for some touchy feely kindred spirit-this isn't the one. But if you are looking for straight up pow wow tunes, northern style this is the one. I like the female voice with Smokeytown Singers, she kicks it up real high at the end of each push up, it sounds cool. Good to dance to also. Smokeytown Singers make the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-01-08

If you're looking for watered down new age "indian" music, this is not for you. But if you want to get sliced open by the raw intense and sometimes almost scifi sound of real indian song, then this is it. The singing is absolutely haunting and if this stuff doesn't get you looking forward to the next nearest pow wow i don't know what will.
