Flamenco

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Carlos Montoya's fingers fly over the frets with ease and power, pulling simply amazing music from the strings. Nephew of the famous flamenco guitarist, Ramon Montoya, Carlos took great pains to learn the history of the music which was born out of the Moorish invasion of Spain. But Carlos was also to attach his own style to the form, inventing new ways of playing far removed from the classical notions, with rapid fire hammer-ons and pull-offs, popping percussive sounds from strings; forging flamenco guitar into a solo instrument able to stand alone with fire and fury. The innovations created by Carlos, and embodied within the performances on this release, gave rise to the powerful playing of nuevo flamenco now dominating the world music scene. The energy, musicianship, and grace belie a genius of the guitar and the fact that there were no retakes on any of the cuts makes the music all the more amazing. The Tradition reissue of this album includes new comprehensive liner notes. The mastertapes were sonically cleansed and digitally remastered for this release.

How did two Mexican-born heavy-metal enthusiasts end up at the top of the Irish charts? The story begins back in their homeland, where Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela Quintero (rhythm and guitar-top hand percussion) met as teenagers. Following years of fruitless struggle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But over time, their virtuoso duo-guitar instrumentals garnered them a following, which in turn led to indoor engagements where they no longer had to freeze their hands off. And no wonder -- their eruptive mixture of Central and South American folkways, with its propulsive rock rhythms, plus grooves reminiscent of The Gipsy Kings' crowd-pleasing Catalan rumbas, is incredibly infectious. Yes, their frisky yet spot-on covers of "Stairway To Heaven" and "Orion" may goad some listeners into purchasing the album, but believe it or not, the original tunes are even more mesmerizing. "Ixapa," in which the pair are joined by noted Hungarian Roma (Gypsy) fiddler Roby Lakatos, has a wicked, pan-European swing, while the impossibly fleet "Juan Loco" should delight all comers -- once they catch their collective breaths! Produced by John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Muse), the USA release includes a DVD containing interviews, live performances and other extras. --Christina Roden

Album Description

The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout "Mexican guitarists" or "Couples." "It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while".

Tamacun -"Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature." He handles crocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him.

Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at a theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each.

Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was a homeless guy who encouraged Rod & Gab to tough it out on the streets, busking in minus zero conditions at Christmastime. John Leckie adds radio static.

Satori - Experiencing self doubt shortly after arriving in Ireland, Rodrigo y Gabriela were at a low ebb. No money, poor English and a deep sense of uncertainty. Only an unshakeable faith in perseverance kept them going. Satori describes the Zen - like moment of enlightenment they felt when they came through the storm.

Ixtapa - "Ixtapa is a very beautiful, very Mexican town." Roby Lakatos' wildly soaring violin solo is a perfect counterpoint to the melodic and percussive guitars.

Stairway to Heaven - "Ixtapa was our very own Stairway to Heaven!" Rod & Gab's take was initially inspired by Stanley Jordan's interpretation of the Led Zep warhorse. Growing from snippets in their live show, their unique version is at once both respectful and innovative.

Orion - This epic reworking of the Metallica song is the second time Rodrigo y Gabriela have covered Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich & Co: "A tribute to the style of music we love, it's what kept us playing the guitar through all those Spinal Tap years"

Juan Loco - The first attempt at recording this album in Mexico in Summer 2005 resulted in three weeks of sunbathing, beer drinking and power cuts. Enter Mr John Leckie, legendary producer of Radiohead, The Stone Roses and Muse, to name but a few; to midwife Rod & Gab's musical vision into what you hear today. 'Juan Loco' ('Mad John') is their Mexican nickname for Mr Leckie.

PPA - "The first P of PPA stands for Pinche, a Mexican term meaning f**king asshole. This is for all the people in the music business who think they know what's going on but actually don't have a clue".

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-08-02

I bought the CD because I had heard Tamacun on the radio. I made the purchase with some trepidation because usually there is only one or two -- maybe three, if one is lucky -- tracks that are any good on a given CD. Well, I lucked out!!! This CD is SOLID! Not a weak track anywhere. Well...maybe a couple, (Stairway to Heaven and another one that I can't think of -- it has a violin) but that's in comparison to the rest of the CD. I can't comment on the technique or musicianship; all I can say is that I looove this CD. It's good music, through and through. So good, I get requests for it at work!

3 out of 5 stars Not the highest quality recording.......2007-07-30

While the music is excellent, the recording production is not
very good. Extraneous noise and glitches are evident,
especially in track 3, where there is actually noise
and bleed-in recorded onto the track, interfering with
the song for a few seconds
(sounds like radio freqencies are being picked
up from an errant amp). Rather than editing or re-cutting
the track, this noise was left in and detracts
significantly from track 3. In my opinion, this was
sloppy production. I rate the performance of
Rodrigo & Gabriella 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Makes your body move, makes your body happy :).......2007-07-28

Love, love, LOVE this CD. Interesting, consuming beats; happy music - even if you can't dance this music will inspire something. Great on a Sunday morning. Also recommend this group's live performance. Simply lovely.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding guitarists!.......2007-07-21

I bought the CD for one song, Tamacun, but the whole CD is fantastic. I think Diablo Roja and Orion are actually my favorite tracks. Well worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Firey and Foot-stomping Spanish guitar music.......2007-07-19

If you like Spanish/flamenco guitar music, you will really like this album. Although R & G claim that this is not traditional flamenco music, it has the exact flavor of flamenco. BTW wonderful and wild solos by Rodrigo as he flies up and down the guitar fretboard.

Stairway to Heaven version is beautiful, jazzy and latin.

Amazon.com essential recording

Hailing from the Reyes and Baliardo Gypsy families, this ensemble from the south of France has been playing "rumba flamenca" since the late 1980s. With this 1995 compilation, the songwriting talent and virtuosity this unique group possesses were gathered together in one comprehensive CD. Notable inclusions are the anthemic hit "Bamboleo," from their debut, Gipsy Kings; the slowly emotive "Trista Pena" the Italian cover "Volaré," from Mosaïque; and assorted live cuts that wonderfully capture the wild energy these players spark onstage. In short, the Gipsy Kings are a celebratory bunch who know how to rock with a rhapsody of acoustic guitars, passionate vocals, and walls of congas, timbales, cabasas, and bongos. Check this caravan out. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-07-26

I remember their hit "Bamboleo" back in the 80's...and decided to get this CD, thinking that that was the only song I would like. I was never a fan of the Gipsy Kings, but I am one now!!!! I can listen to their songs over and over, "Baila Me" is such an upbeat song, you cant help but want to dance. "Viento de Arena" must be in another language other than Spanish, cant understand a word of the song, but also one of my favorite.

The mix of traditional Flamenco guitars with a modern beat, is perfection in itself.

5 out of 5 stars if you love living, you will love this.......2007-05-21

I guess to each his own, but this disc is breathtaking, soothing, emotional, fun, spicy, and many other thing all in one. My daughter loves their music as does everone I know. It is great for every age. I would rate this even more, if possible. Full of soul!!

5 out of 5 stars The best accoustic band in the world.......2007-03-17

Beautifull rythms, I like this the best because of viento del arena.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-03-16

If this is the "Best" then I definately don't want to buy anymore.

1 out of 5 stars bad mistake, it sits buried, never to be played again.......2007-02-27

I was expecting something along the lines of Strunz and Farah, after hearing only one tune on the radio. What a disappointment! There is that one song, it is clearly different from the rest of the tracks. And thankfully, it contains no Kings vocals, which are as grating on the ears as pigs in heat! Of course, there are some reveiwers, as reflected by all the stars following this album around, who relish this stuff.
If you are new to these guys, beware! Taste the sauce first on someone else's dime before you buy.

There's very little doubt that the Gipsy Kings are good at what they do--they've become the brand name in Sevillana, the pop-oriented flamenco style. Since 1989, when the single "Bamboleo" and their Gipsy Kings album broke through and went gold in the United States, they've found a willing audience in America for their style, which, while flashy, doesn't demand a great deal of the listener, unlike more hardcore versions of flamenco. This double set collects 37 of their biggest tracks, including a version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," into one package guaranteed to satisfy fans of their precise, jubilant playing. And there's no denying they have the power to move people with their singing and fretwork, making this a must for those who want to experience all the familiar material in one sitting. Like the band themselves, the record is an unqualified success as a greatest hits package. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-08-03

This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, A R M IK or G O V I. It is the very essence of good music. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Al Dimeola, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is my second copy!.......2007-01-10

This double CD by the Gipsy Kings is one of my all-time favorites! I now have 2 copies of this CD and I introduce the Gipsy Kings to as many people as I possibly can. Everytime "Volare" plays, I feel like dancing! Just really great, infectious, "feel-good" music! You do not have to understand Spanish to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I'm dancing as I write this!!!.......2006-07-25

While I am not a music connoisseur, I can tell you that my whole family LOVES this album. From my 34 yr. old husband right down to our 1 yr. old son and all others in between. You will not be disappointed! This is our favorite album of the summer and we try hard to be flamenco dancers while singing along and cleaning the house-it's quite a show, I assure you...

5 out of 5 stars Rumba Flamenca I love!.......2006-04-04

I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2006-03-13

I had been meaning to buy music by the Gypsy Kings for some time - having always heard mention of them. I am really glad I finally did! The collection is a great introduction to their wonderful music. It is fun and energetic - beautiful songs in spanish!

5 out of 5 stars Suprising.......2007-06-15

After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10

I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13

All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04

I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo.......2006-12-15

PUTUMAYO is awesome music, a real eye opener. Similar in many ways to the BUDDHA BAR approach but different flavour.

Anyone who enjoys this cd may want to try MANU CHAO (proxima estacion ... ESPERANZA) for another trully great Latin American music.

This is definitely one of the easiest CD's to pop in, along with Nuevo Latino .... anytime anywhere ... just makes you enjoy the moment so much more.

Album Description

Jesse Cook began his amazing career on Narada, signing with the label in 1994. One year later, he released his debut album TEMPEST. The album quickly sold over 100,000 units in the U.S. alone and propelled the rumba flamenco guitarist into the limelight just as "world music" was gaining broader acceptance among mainstream audiences. His astounding chops, sultry rhythms, and undeniable stage flair combined to make Cook one of the stars of the genre.

Since then, he has become an international phenomenon. He's reached rock-star status in his native Canada, his Juno-award winning albums have sold over 1 million units worldwide, and his live shows are legendary. THE ULTIMATE JESSE COOK captures all the fire of Cook's most popular hits from his 6 albums on two, specially-priced CDs.

My husband and I had never heard of Jesse Cook, but we like Flamenco music so we went to see him live. The show was outstanding, and this CD has some of his best songs on it. If you want something uniquely different to listen to, this is it. The music is a blend of Spanish, African, and Island sounds. Very nice.

Secondly: you get 2 disc for the price of one

The Barcelona-based nuevo-roots outfit is back with a third entertaining, anarchistic yet wildly danceable amalgam. The rousing guitar of Ramón Giménez and sinuous, Moorish-tinged vocals of Marina "la Canillas" Abad are wreathed in handclaps and percussion, plus scathing brass charts, remarkably creative scratching, beats and other electronic embellishments. There are also flurries of quotes from a far-flung array of traditions outside their own, such as reggae and rap, but the band's antic inclusiveness never derails their individuality or adulterates the heritages of their collaborators. After all, their hometown is one of Europe's great musical hotbeds, in which flamenco, rumba Catalana and other local styles are often fused with whatever is at hand or just arrived. Guest stars this time out include Faada Freddy from the Senegalese hip-hop collective Daara J, Indian fusioneers Prithpal Rajput and Nitin Sawhney, and Cuban pianist Roberto Carcàsses. From nearer home, Flamenco guitar legend Pepe Habichuela and Spanish singing star Martirio sit in, along with tres and guitar master Raúl Rodrígues of Son de la Frontera, another band with fervent global leanings, this time toward Cuba. The lush packaging includes a CD-ROM containing videos, lyric translations, works by fourteen illustrators and other extras. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Ojos de Brujo - Very lively.......2007-08-01

My husband read about this group, so we ordered the Cd and love it. The group is excellent and the music is lively latin style. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD!!.......2007-07-12

Brilliant CD!! Fantastic vocals, musicianship, songs and production mixing Flamenco (especially rhumba and bulerias) with influences of salsa, India, the Middle East, jazz, Drum 'n' Bass, reggae, hip-hop and rap (including beat-box)... all while retaining it's Flamenco core! At times, rhythmically complex, the CD is still funky as hell and will appeal to most listeners who enjoy the styles mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars Off to see the wizard.......2007-06-27

Ojos de Brujo (Eyes of the Wizard) is one of the most creative bands in Spain at the moment. They blend stains of pure flamenco (guitarist Ramón Gimenez comes from a line of flamenco guitarists) with hip-hop, jazz, African, Indian, whatever... to make their own unique withches brew. The new album may not be as genre-bending as their second disc "Bari", which I discovered on a trip to Spain a few years back, but after virtually inventing a new style that would be difficult to do. Vocalist Marina Abad is a commanding presence. Check the band out live if you have a chance; they just rocked LA's California Plaza for a free Grand Performance concert. This disc has ample highlights, in particular "Todo Tiende," "Runalí," "Feedback" and "Respira." A must-have disc for fans of Spanish and Latin music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Listen.......2007-06-12

Bought this as something to listen to before moving to Spain for a few months. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Ojos de brujo.......2007-06-08

An amazing CD for those that like flamanco/hip hop/spanish music from Spain. I lived there for 2 years and fell in love with the rich culture within music. Enjoy the great tunes, I know I am rocking out in my car solo.

Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a zapateado played by Nino Ricardo) to track 11: Manolo de Huelva accompanying the voice of Manuel Vallejo. Suddenly we are in a cuadro, the natural environment of flamenco, with a group of participants clapping, stamping their feet, and shouting encouragement to the musicians. No longer is it just a man sitting alone on a stage or in a studio, playing the guitar fluently and flawlessly; this is cante hondo, the heart of flamenco, intense and astringent, and the best of this disc's many flavors. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars This album is for musicians.......2007-05-21

I am a big fan of flamenco, but I am not a musician. I still like and appreciate the music in this album, but I think it is for musicians who can understand the skill.

5 out of 5 stars Four of the Best (before the 2 Pacos).......2007-03-28

This is a high quality recording of four of the best Flamenco Guitarist predecessors to Paco Peña and Paco de Lucia.

5 out of 5 stars This is where my flamenco journey began.......2006-09-08

Not only is this CD flamenco puro at its best, It almost defines flamenco puro. The performers are all famous (sabicas, nino ricardo, manolo de huelva and Melchor de Marchena). The performances are old (40-50 years +) and are true to the spirit of flamenco puro.

I listened to other flamenco guitar performances, but not until I listened to this CD several times did I fall in love with the flamenco guitar.

5 out of 5 stars For all lovers of true Flamenco.......2002-04-12

With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.

5 out of 5 stars RAW, hard core, Flamenco Guitar!!!.......1999-07-28

If you are looking for something along the lines of Gypsy Soul (HIGHLY recommend it) or Gypsy Passion (also wonderful music), which I was, this most likely is not one for you.

This is R-A-W & hard core Flamenco guitar without much, if any, other vocal or instrumental accompaniment. I guess, the title says it all.

The masters can sure "pick'em".

I am warming up to it......slowly ;-).

With the feeling of an old-fashioned, locally produced radio show picked up accidentally while touring through the Andes, the Kings' latest excursion into their patented high-spirited rumba-flamenca harbors a strong South American bias, complete with a chiming charango (armadillo-shell lute) and vintage-sounding squeezeboxes. They also send a big, wet smooch to the late, lamented original Buena Vista Social Club with a delightful cover of Chan Chan. Although less slick than much of their earlier catalog, the set list presented here is also far from rustic and still fairly restaurant-friendly, with kicking bass lines, applied echoes, rhythmic augmentation (as though these guys needed any!) and plenty of other tech-oriented touches; but happily, these don't get in the way. The leather-lunged yet suavely romantic vocals are as soulful as ever, the guitars as round-toned yet insistent, and the handclaps as festive. But the real good news is that the band seems to have recovered both their primal chops and their sense of humor. Marred only by very occasional bits of over-production and a remarkably chintzy running-time of just over 45 minutes, the album is very nearly perfect, an effervescently virile project that continues and consolidates the career-reviving upswing begun with Roots, back in 2004. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars There's a party in my car..........2007-08-06

I bought this CD when I needed some music to liven up a long drive. I'd bought a few others as well, but Pasajero's driving beats and hook-y melodies proved so entertaining that it spent far more time in the CD slot than any of its more mundane companions. What fun--it made me want to *bailar* and *cantar* at the wheel. It had been a long time since I'd listened to the Gypsy Kings, and I'd forgotten their fine party spirit. I am once again a Gypsy-jero.

2 out of 5 stars Too mellow.......2007-07-25

Its not a great CD compared to many others from their past..
Its very mellow and has no upbeat songs to compare to Volare or Bamboleo, which of course would be difficult to top.
I was a bit dissapointed - there's just no highs and lows on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Love this music.......2007-06-27

I have always been a fan of the Gipsy Kings, I have most of their CD's, and this one does not disappoint! They are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and lively.......2007-06-12

This albums is on par with all the other albums released but I feel it has a more contemporary spin. Most of the songs remain upbeat and you can't help but sing along. I highly recommend it, especially if you like any of the other albums they've put out. Favorites are Mira La Chica, Cafe, and Donde Esta Mi Amor.

4 out of 5 stars Breezy........2007-03-27

With their infectious blend of wailing and strumming, so unfailingly evocative of poolsides and paella, the Gipsy Kings have notched up 18 million album sales since their 1980s smashes "Bamboleo" and "Volare".
While their last album, "Roots", was a highly acclaimed return to their all-acoustic origins, "Pasajero" takes a poppier turn with a sequence of breezy, radio-friendly numbers so dependent on their well-worn melodic tics that it could test the patience of even the most die-hard fan.

Nicolas Reyes's voice has lost none of its throaty charisma, and the transition from plaintive verse to shameless crowd-pleasing chorus will inevitably make you smile at some point during the proceedings.

The arrangements, meanwhile, throw in Cuban guitar, North African-style accordion and subtle touches of reggae. But, whichever way you dress it up, the Gipsy Kings keep coming back to the same few tunes with which they began their career over two decades ago.

This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Años," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Music.......2007-08-05

This is one of the most exciting CDs I have bought in the last year. The paring of great musicians of differing musicaly styles and from such different generation is pure genius.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful synergy.......2007-06-08

A unique combination of beautiful jazz piano music played by acclaimed Cuban Bebo Valdés with the sensuous hoarse voice of young Gypsy singer El Cigala. First heard them at a friend's house and could not wait until I purchased the CD for myself and to give to friends. Great selection and variety of songs. The nearest to perfect symbiosis I have ever seen in a collaboration between jazz and flamenco.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate!.......2007-05-15

5 out of 5 stars A new interpretation for Latin Classics.......2007-03-09

Lagrimas Negras is a beautiful collection of Latin American beats combined with traditional Flamenco sounds. It is a perfect blend of music.

5 out of 5 stars Lagrimas Negras.......2007-02-12

It is quite rare to find an album that can be enjoyed in its entirety, but this happens to be one of them. The genius arragangements of Bebo Valdes accompanied by the moving and impassioned vocals of Cegala are a match that could only be made through divine intervention.

Some may complain that Ojos De Brujo is simply the latest group to pillage flamenco music, but they'd be missing the point. This Barcelona band grew up with the flamenco tradition while also devouring a steady diet of hip-hop, punk, funk, gypsy and Middle Eastern music, so the inclusion of rapping, turntables and funk grooves is a logical one for these upstarts. Marina "La Canillas" Abad doesn't have the range that a conservatory-trained singer might have, but she makes up for it with her vivid, socially conscious lyrics and staccato delivery, which can skitter into rapid-fire rapping that resonates surprisingly well with flamenco's chattering rhythms. Indeed, the group is unafraid to mix anything: "Naita" starts out as a traditional song before breaking into a techno finale. More graceful is the fusion on "Memorias Perdías," which meshes flamenco, gypsy and swing jazz. One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the spring, Bari has a punky spirit that will make it a pick on many year-end lists. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars I almost wore this CD out!.......2007-05-15

If you love upbeat flamenco complete with vocals and lots of stomping and clapping, get this CD right now. It's so hard to find anything like this in the States - it makes me want to quit my life and move to Sevilla today!

5 out of 5 stars Flamenco and hip hop fusion that works.......2006-02-27

Ojos de Brujo, "Eye of the Wizard", is a musician collective from Catalan Spain. Their music base is Flamenco but they bravely mix hip-hop, rap, and jazz in a fused frenzy of originality. Unlike most music fusions, Ojos de Brujo is able to remain true to its roots and still produce a unique sound. Their Bari Album of 2002 is their second release and the first time I heard it I was amazed at how they were able to join the deeply emotional lyrics of Flamenco with the more urban and street sound of hip-hop. Their lead singer, Marina Abad, can inspire deep emotions with her traditional Flamenco renditions but she inspires amazement when she breaks into a rap in the middle of the song Zambra. I hate to admit that I have been very biased when it comes to hearing rap from European bands, and usually found their attempts innocent at best, compared to the more real sound we hear in the USA. But Ojos de Brujo pulls it off because they are rapping about their emotions and world, and are able to incorporate rap lyrics into the pulse and rhythm of Flamenco, a music genre that is very much in their blood as much as culture. Do not get me wrong, 75% of the music is Flamenco on this album, but just when you think it is just the same traditional beat, they mix it up and hit you with a completely new sound. Ojos de Brujo is one of those jewels of originality and inspiration that you find by word of mouth, or by mistake, but when you hear them you know you are listening to something special. Ojos de Brujo's Bari album is a fruit of that genius and like all genius; it is fleeting and only temporary.

5 out of 5 stars Rare energy.......2005-12-28

This isn't flamenco fused with anything, this is a brand new recipe and it comes off fantastic. Energetic, with a strong flamenco beat cooked in with a variety of styles to produce an amazing collection of really excellent songs. If you like any of the new style flamenco with a beat, this is a must. Of the 30 second sample cuts provided by Amazon, listen to #2 Tiempo De Solea, and #5 Quien Engana No Gana, that will give you an excellent idea of how strong this album is.

5 out of 5 stars excellent music from Spain.......2005-11-28

I heard this for the first time in Mexico City, and I just absolutely loved it from the outset. Especially thrilling is track 5 "quien engana no gana." An incredibly successful blend of traditional and modern. Also check out Radio Tarifa.
