Singer Mafalda Arnauth is another enchanting princess to follow in the footsteps of fado queen Amália Rodrigues. Not as deep and operatic as Mariza, or as wistfully sensual as Cristina Branco, Arnauth's rich passionate voice falls somewhere in-between the two. Making her U.S. debut with Encantamento, her third album overall, Arnauth gracefully works through traditional material ably supported by José Elmiro Nunes on Portuguese guitar, Luis Oliveira on classical guitar and João Penedo on upright bass. She steps outside the fado tradition of using poetry for lyrics to write nine of the 15 songs, mostly in collaboration with Oliveira. Some of the originals are in the strict fado tradition of fate and tragedy, while others deviate into other thematic territory, and "Fado Arnauth" even has some interesting folk accents and a pop music sensibility. Arnauth also produces Encantamento, leaving no doubt that this fadista is a true keeper of the flame, and a singer who'll bring the music deep into the 21st century. --Tad Hendrickson

This singer is more famous in her country, the famous fadistas are Mariza, Cristina Branco, Misia.
This singer is great, She is a good singer, if you want listen a good fado, this cd is for you!

She has a great voice and good songs. At first listening we found that the CD lacks real highlights, the songs seem to blend into each other, but as we listened to it several times we found that it really is a beatiful CD. It actually is a bit hypnotic; her voice is so rich and the instruments so mellow. It is more for the real fado fan, not for a beginner.

First off, five stars to Ms. Arnauth for what I feel certain is another amazing album. I have heard her in person, and have listened to other albums of hers, and she is AMAZING.

Sadly, EMI has chosen to implement copy protection technology on this album which prevents me from playing it in my car, or on my PC using my MusicMatch Jukebox player. This is in direct violation of the "fair use" act established by the Federal Government that protects the right of individuals to make a backup copy of their media, and it also violates common sense when it makes it impossible to play the CD on the only two players available to me. Thanks EMI - brilliant decision. At this point, I'll be purchasing no more music on the EMI label, no matter how much I admire the artist.

Talented Performer and Songwriter.......2005-06-15

I eagerly awaited my CD having read other reviews. There was no disappointment - I am in awe of this lady's power of her beautiful voice and its versatility. Favourites include No Teu Poema and her duo with Monica Ferraz in O Voz da Minh'Alma. This is a very well recorded album of traditional Portuguese music with excellent accompaniments from Jose Nunes, Joao Penedo and not forgetting Luis Oliveira, the partner in the songwriting duo. For anyone interested in Fado music this album is a MUST!

Memories of home.......2005-03-16

My father is from Madeira, and as his old LPs of Amalia Rodrogues and other classic fado artists have been wearing out, I've been searching for new fado CDs to help replace his collection. He's liked some artists well enough, but when he put this album on, he called me immediately, and couldn't stop telling me how much he loved Mafalda's voice. He even asked me to find him anything else by her that I could.

To me, that's the highest recommendation.

Worth It for Huapango Alone!.......2006-11-22

After serendipitously hearing Huapango on Sirius, I just had to have it! This CD presents an interesting mix of composers -- some more significant than others -- and other reviewers have addressed the strength of some of these pieces over others. But the joyful ebullience of Huapango is something I find myself turning to time and time again. The last cut on the disc, Huapango alone is worth the effort it took to find it. I would have bought this CD if Huapango had been the only piece on it!

Dorian after Mata.......2000-06-26

Eduardo Mata began this collection with a very serious attitude. Unfortunately, it has not been understood by the Dorian staff. This selection has the spirit of its title, and it makes no sense to offer "Latin American Lollipops" when there has not been a meal before. The CD market is hungry of non-mainstream information, and Latin America is almost totally absent. Here, Maximiano Valdés makes a good job, even if he has not the extraordinary level of Mata when he recorded "Sensemayá" for Dorian. The selection is useful with the light pieces by minor composers like Camargo-Guarnieri, Carreño, Plaza and Moncayo (his nationalistic post-card "Huapango") or with the minor piece by the better Ginastera (whose discography is so scarce), and necessary with the marvelous and so short "El renacuajo paseador" by the great Silvestre Revueltas, the major composer from the Americas, the deepest, the most serious of all.
