Desert Wind

Editorial Reviews

She's been dubbed "the Madonna of the Desert," and this record is the reason why. Haza came out of her '80s folk-fan circuit and returned to her beloved Israeli disco-pop with this highly produced set of songs that were clearly designed for the mainstream. She's got an incredible set of pipes, and they are readily in evidence here. Haza is a charmer when she sings, soaring above even the most trivial studio dubs and musical overloads that exemplify the backing tracks. There are more traditional recordings available from Haza, both predating and following this one, that accent her Israeli and Yemenite heritage. Desert Wind is for those looking for a heavier beat, a harder pop edge, and exotic samples rather than deeper roots. --Louis Gibson

Album Description

The sounds for this series were recorded in 3D by Chuck Plaisance. His recording system is designed to simulate human hearing, using a binaural head microphone to capture depth, height, width, as well as directional movement. No special equipment is needed to get 3D sound from traditional stereo speakers. In fact, these albums will make your system - speakers or headphones - sound like it never has before. You are the experience.

All pieces contain compositions of pure Nature Sounds produced, arranged, edited and mastered by Chuck Plaisance and Suzanne Doucet. (aka Virtual Audio Environment).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect To Fall Asleep To.......2006-07-20

I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars 3-Dimensional Pure Nature Sounds.......2005-11-21

This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Treasure.......2006-11-20

Many years ago, I found a tape in the discount bin by the artist Ofra Haza. It was Desert Wind. I had never heard of her but I was intrigued by the cover and frankly, the price. I bought it hoping that it would atleast be interesting and new. I was not disappointed. Ofra's voice blew me away. I had never heard anything like it before and have not since. Desert Wind is still, for me, her best album. Her voice soars in I Want To Fly and is haunting in Kaddish. She was really my first encounter with Middle Eastern music and I have never forgotten how utterly moved I was by her beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Middle East Music Meets Mainstream Pop With Excellent Result.......2003-11-06

This CD is a wonderful mixture of middle eastern rhythm's
and mainstream pop. The music on this cd is both interesting and
exciting. Ofra Haza's singing is consistently superior in every respect to most other female pop vocalists. Her technical excellence, clarity of tone and pureness of pitch are at least equal to the best efforts of the best: Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, Barbra Streisand. Ofra Haza poured
great depths of emotion into all her singing. With the majority
of her songs it is easy to discern that her soul is on full display, that she put her heart into her singing, and that the feelings expressed are genuine. She wrote much of her own music and most of her own lyrics. In "Desert Wind" the booklet provides a brief explanation of what each song is about. For example, the song "Fatamorgana" (Mirage), one of the best on this CD, tells the story of Ofra's mother traveling on foot through the desert to escape oppression in her native country. The CD provides a well balanced mix of fast paced and slower songs. The two standout fast paced songs are "Wish Me Luck," and "Middle East." Ofra typically put one or two very good songs at the end of her albums, and in this CD it is the excellent, relective "Kaddish." Overall, this is a very satisfying CD, and like almost all Ofra Haza's music, it
is worthy of many multiple listenings.

1 out of 5 stars The worst of Ofra Haza........2003-09-19

Having bought Shaday and Kirya by miss Haza, i bought Desert Wind with the notion that it would be as fantastic as the aforementioned. Boy was i wrong. Gone are the heavy Yemenite/Israeli beats and flavor, as is Haza singing in Hebrew. Instead, I found her beautiful voice swallowed up by abhorrent 80's synth-pop cheese and benal lyrical content, with Hebrew only in the chorus at most. There is not a single song, with the exception of "Slave Dream" that I could bear to listen to all the way through, and most of the songs are laughably bad. So, fans of Haza's other works, do yourself a favor and save your [money] and buy Shaday or Kirya. Unless you want a good laugh, then by all means, purchase away!

5 out of 5 stars World-beat pop masterpiece.......2003-06-20

I'll never forget the day I first heard this on cassette. My wife came home from shopping and put it on. I said "WOW, who is this??" And she said "I don't know who she is, they were playing her at the music store and I asked who it was and bought it. I think she's Arab." Then I saw Ofra Haza's picture on the cover and had to say "WOW" again. As we soon learned, she was a Yemenite Israeli, already world-famous (except in America) back then in 1990. We saw her in concert later that year and of course learned much more about her and her earlier music, particularly her groundbreaking "Fifty Gates of Wisdom (Yemenite Songs)".

Following "Fifty Gates" in 1987, Ofra Haza turned to a dance beat in "Shadday" (1988), an album, in my opinion, of derivative western dance-track sounds and only two stand-out songs. Then, a year later, she turns out "Desert Wind", this stunning, hook-laden, beat-driven, authentically Middle-Eastern album of passionate, meaningful songs, juxtaposing Hebrew and English verses, almost all written or co-written by her. Best are the danceable "Ya Ba Ye", "Middle East", "I Want to Fly" and "Taw Shi", and the gorgeous "Fatamorgana", "Da'asa" and "Kaddish". That's a lot of favorites for one album, but that's the kind of album this is. "Slave Dream" and "In Ta" take some getting used to, but even they turn into winners once you've managed to absorb them. "Kaddish" left hardly a dry eye in the house when she performed this in concert. "Middle East" has ironically the least middle-eastern melody of the dance tunes (i.e. it's in a major key), and it is a rousing song of hope for peace - even a love offering to the Palestinians. Ofra seems to put one such song on every album. Tragically, Ofra is gone, and we're all still waiting to hear popular songs of peace from the Palestinian side. Ofra would probably say keep hoping.

4 out of 5 stars Less of the loud accompanyment please!.......2002-08-07

Ofra's Haza's singing on this album is stunning, where we can hear her above the loud accompanyment. I just hope that with modern recording technology they will reissue her work with the background toned down so that we can enjoy the beautiful soaring voice. There was none like her. Whenever I hear Ofra's voice on a sound track I recognize it instantly. for my taste, it is the "dance club" rhythmic beat that it too loud. I prefer Kaddish and Slave Dream where the background music stays in the background.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Sanity.......2005-07-27

Before Monty Python, before the Beatles, before "'Enery the Aigth Oi Am" there was the subtle, sweet, insdious humor of Flanders and Swann, and their lyrics remain part of the recognition rituals of Ivy Leaguers of the sixties. For any aging hippies or yuppies who find life WAY more stressful than we ever expected, and for whom the down side of alcohol, sex, and drugs has become apparent, I recommend listening several times to "In the Bath". It raises a cry for peace among the nations by inviting all the leaders to sit congenially steaming in a communal bathtub. And they reminding us of our essential self-interest when they add the proviso "as long as Swann and Flanders get the end without the taps." On those nights when we suspect that there isn't any point to it all, reach for the Flanders and Swann. They won't convince you there is any meaning to life, but they'll make it a lot easier to bear. Don't even try to do without it.

5 out of 5 stars Have Some Madeira.......2005-07-06

Not every line in Flanders and Swann has become part of our 37-year marriage, but many have. As our turntables fail, we are pleased that we can relive all the fun stuff we used to collect. Nothing is like this duo, especially what you usually hear as French horn by Mozart converted into "I found that horn go(r)ne." And, of course,
"Have some Madeira, m'dear" is an all-time favorite.

5 out of 5 stars British humour at its best.......2003-03-15

When I started out as a teacher of English, I had the most wonderful colleague as a mentor -- when she retired she gave me three LPs with much of what is on these CDs, and it must be one of the best gifts I have ever been given. Practically all of it makes me smile or laugh out loud (although I must admit that some, like The Armadillo and Slow Train, make me so melancholy that I can just feel my lower lip tremble and my eyes fill up). How can you beat lines like "Hail to thee, blithe Wompom", or "The English are moral, the English are good / And clever, and modest, and misunderstood"? I find they make great listening exercises for my teenaged students as well -- they consider it ancient, but incredibly funny!

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't heard this..........2003-01-16

The great comedic pairing of the late Michael Flanders (vocals) and Donald Swann (piano and occasional vocals) must surely rank among the hall of fame of comic singers and songwriters. Descended from the British music hall tradition, these two men wrote and performed music which still sparkles with wit today, some 40 or more years since it was recorded.

After being told to take up singing as a means of strengthening his polio-weakened lungs, the wheelchair-bound Flanders teamed up with pianist Swann and proceeded to write such classic songs as "The Hippo Song (Mud Mud Glorious Mud)", "The Gasman Cometh", "The Gnu Song", "A Transport of Delight" and many others. As well as a gently satirical spirit, all these songs feature the sublime wordplay and interplay of both men.

The first two discs of this box set are actual concerts - "At The Drop Of A Hat" and its successor "At The Drop Of Another Hat". Recorded at the height of the duo's popularity and form, the sound quality is surprisingly good for recordings this old.

"At The Drop Of A Hat" opens with three of the Flanders and Swann classics. "Transport Of Delight", a song in praise of the "97 horsepower omnibus" features the wonderful harmonies of the duo on lines like "any more fares" and Flanders' dead-on impression of a London busdriver "Geddardait, we're full right up inside". "Song of Reproduction" deals with the new, as it was then, stereo technology and features Flanders delivering an incredible monologue using every conceivable piece of audiophile jargon. "The Gnu Song" (in which "gnu" is pronounced phonetically) is a real treat. The audience's reaction to the reappearance of the gnu is superb.
As well as this opening trio, the disc features Flanders' snippets of "Songs For Our Time" (in which he experiments with conventions of hit songs), "Song of the Weather" (a rundown of English weather throughout the year), "The Reluctant Cannibal" (featuring Swann in the tititular role and the chorus "I can't eat people/I won't eat people/eatin' people is wrong"), Swann's foray into Greek folksong "Kokraki" and the justifiably famous "Madeira M'Dear". The performance ends with a rousing version of "The Hippo Song".
Flanders is in fine voice throughout and his comments introducing each song are delivered with deadpan accuracy. The story behind "The Gnu Song" is an absolute masterpiece. Flanders' monologue about the creation of "Greensleeves" is also superb - "'Greenfleeves'. That's an interesting name for a fong" (referencing old English script) being just a taste.

"Another Hat" begins in equally fine form with "Gasman Cometh" and "Ill Wind". "Gasman", presaged as "a tale of unending domestic upheaval", is sure to have most people who've ever dealt with unreliable tradesmen nodding in agreement, while "Ill Wind" is Flanders' attempt at setting words to a French horn concerto featuring the immortal lines "I lost that horn/lost that horn/lost that horn/found that horn/gorn". The performance continues with Swann's Russian/English song "In The Desert", the ending of which is truly side-splitting. "All Gall" (a reinterpretation of "This Old Man" to fit then-French President Charles de Gaulle) is a little dated but very cleverly done. "Song of Patriotic Prejudice", with its introduction and opening lines grabbing the audience's attention is another triumph, while the "Hippo Encore" is a great end to the performance.
Again Flanders is at his peak. His loving description of the Spanish olive-stuffers ("Olividados") and his superb story about flying ("By Air") are both brilliant examples of the shaggy dog story.
My favourite from both of these discs would have to be "First and Second Law". Flanders decides to educate Swann in elementary science and picks on the first and second laws of thermodynamics ("heat is work and work is heat" and "heat cannot of itself pass from one body to a hotter body") and the repetition of these phrases in time to Swann's barely-there piano accompaniment is one of the finest moments in British comedy.

The third disc is largely forgettable. It begins with a series of animal-related songs performed in a studio and without much of Flanders' rambling introductions. "Warthog" has its moments, while the others were clearly not performed in front of an audience for a reason. "Wompom" is also mildly diverting, presenting a story about a made-up substance which is the answer to everything.
The rest of the disc is then filled out with much earlier material in a rather poorly-recorded concert. "20 Tons of TNT" (related to the calculation the pair had done which gave that as the amount of TNT per person on the planet at the time) provides food for thought, but little more.

Is this box set for everyone? No. Much of the humour both within and without the songs does require a bit of background knowledge to what was going on in Britain and Europe at the time (1960s), John Profumo is referenced a few times as well as Charles de Gaulle and the Common Market, while a smattering of classical music knowledge can help out a bit with Swann's work and "Ill Wind". The fact that my grandfather (who's in his late 70s) recalls hearing these songs and laughing may give an indication as to the age of some of the subject matter. Equally the fact that "First and Second Law" references an awful lot of physics might do the same.

Nevertheless, for anyone who loves British humour done in a gentle manner or who is interested in the source of "mud mud glorious mud/nothing quite like it for cooling the blood", give these CDs some serious consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Satire.......2002-04-03

I've been singing Flanders and Swann every day In the Bath since I first heard them in 1964. If you don't know them, think Gilbert and Sullivan by way of English music hall and Noel Coward, with a bit of Tom Lehrer musical satire and classic Bob Newhart or Charlie Manna monologues. F&S commented gently on their times: "The purpose of satire, it has been rightly said, is to strip away the veneer of comfortable illusion and cozy half-truth. And our job, as I see it, is to put it back again." Quite simply the best comic songs and patter of the 20th century. Michael died in 1975, Donald in 1994. Goodnight, Mabel Figworthy, wherever you are.

Here are some samples of Michael's verbal wit.

Wordplay:
- "A Transport of Delight," their song of the pleasures of the double-decker bus "has recently been adopted as the theme song of the Underground resistance movement."
- Speculating that Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves: "and the royalties go to royalty."
- About a tennis referee late in the day: "the umpire upon whom the sun never sets."
- Explaining how he was hoisted in his wheelchair onto airliners by a fork lift: "Why they need a great machine like that to lift forks I do not know. Well, they're only plastic, now, aren't they?"
- On status symbols: "The object is to Gunga Din your neighbor: 'I'm a better man than you' is the acid test," and, "let's bang our status cymbals with the best."
- To a disenchanted cannibal: "You used to be a regular anthropophagi."
- Of a lecher: "And he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps," while the girl "lowered her standards by raising her glass, her courage, her eyes, and his hopes."
- At the corrida d'olivas (the Andorran festival of olive stuffing, not to be confused with the Spanish corrida de toros, or bullfight): "And a great cry goes up of Ole! He has made an 'ol."
- "It's no good going up to a scientist and saying to him like you would to anybody else, 'Good morning, how are you, lend me a quid, and so on.' He'll just glare at you, or make a rude retort."

Throw-aways
- During the height of the cold war the Soviet Union sent the Moscow Ballet on a world tour. Donald sang one chorus of the Hippopotamus Song "mud, mud, glorious mud - nothing quite like it for cooling the blood" in Russian. Michael: "That should improve our cultural relations."
- During the 1963 Mandy Rice-Davies and Christine Keeler scandal: "None of that going around saying no smoke without fire. Nil cumbustibus, Profumo." Also, from "Friendly Duet," "such models of friendship are precious and rare, while the friendship of models is not."
- "Now if you're writing a musical, as I'm sure practically all of you are, . . ."
- Of Donald: "You know that no one has a higher regard for your music . . . than you do yourself. I merely meant that you are not great because you are not dead. If you wish to be great you must stop composing and start decomposing."
- "We never found a rhyme for (Soviet Premier Nikita) "Kruschev" until he was dead: Did he die or was he "pushed off"?"
- "We spent two dreadful, uh, delightful years, entertaining the Americans whose need, let's face it, is greater even than yours. Of course, when we're over there we say that the other way 'round."
- "No matter what you may say about the Germans, and who doesn't . . ."
- "Some of the songs that have made our names a household word, like slop-bucket . . ."
- "They've started testing cars now. They started at 10 years, then 5, now three. There's even some talk of having them tested before they leave the factory."

Absurdities
- "I'm delirious about our new oven fitted with the eye-level grill. This means that without my having to bend down the hot fat can squirt straight into my eye."
- A spectator during the construction of Stonehenge: "So, it's not going to be lived in. Well, that's something anyway. So what is it, then? It's a what?! A calendar?! A bit big for a calendar isn't it? You'd look pretty foolish with that on your desk."
- "Donald knocked himself out this morning. Got one of those new pop-up toasters. Nasty things."

Incredible multiple rhymes:
- "The fair hippoptama he aimed to entice from her seat on her hilltop above, as she hadn't got a ma to give her advice, went tip-toeing down to her love."
- Of Josephine: "Nonsense, said Bonaparte. She lives on her own, apart, in her own apartment."
- "Oh let us be married if our parents don't mind. We'd be happy and inseparable. Inextricably entwined. We'd live happily every after, said the Honeysuckle to the Bindweed."
- "And you'll always see a single lace-less left-hand leather boot. A bootless British river bank's a shock. We leave them there at midnight, you can track a member's route by the alternating print of boot and sock."

I was very pleased with this product, my sister recently got married and I was responsible for the music.... I am happy that I made this selection, everyone was happy with the music chosen for the ceremony, I would recommend it to any one looking for wedding music

5 out of 5 stars A wedding minister's review.......2000-01-16

I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

Album Description

This 2-CD set contains over two and a half hours of beautiful original American music with Middle Eastern influences. It is a fabulous tool for dance teachers and students alike who can refer to the CD back for a quick reference to the length and rhythm of each song. Desert Wind is famous for world beat music with jazz, classical, and progressive rock influences. This CD set was made in response to dancer requests, and the rhythms include chiftitelli, ayoub (zaar), maqsoum, bolero, slow, medium and fast beladis, funky ayoub, masmoudi, maqsoum, khaleegy, slow and fast karsilama, saidi-swing, libi-rock, celtic jig, saidi-rock, India slow 7/4, tribal waltz, etho-rock, Mid-East funk, and Latin 6/8.

With an amazing blend of instruments and rhythms, this music is both uplifting and relaxing! Whether for dance or listening, Desert Wind's "World Dance" is work of art. This album includes a special guest appearance by violinist Doug Adams from Light Rain. It features awesome drum solos, passionate world rhythms, enchanting melodies and exquisite flute work. CD one is exclusively instrumental in response to dancers' requests, and there are songs with moving lyrics on CD 2. This CD set is not for dancers looking exclusively for the pure Egyptian genre. Yet hundreds of modern dance and belly dance professionals have acclaimed the World Dance (2 CD Set) as a "highly recommended" and "must have" addition for any music collection.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars New Age Fusion at best.......2006-05-26

I purchased this based on other reviews and I must say that I almost wish I didn't.

I have to agree with the other reviewer, NOT very dancable. Maybe a veil piece here or there and a drum solo for a beginner dance class, but not for the intermediate or advanced dancer.

It is new agey music with ME drum rhythms forced together.

Maybe useful as background music at a hafla (party) when everyone is eating but not for when they want to dance.

Just not for me.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome World Dance CDs from Desert Wind.......2006-04-26

What an amazing find! Here is almost 2 1/2 hours of incredible Desert Wind music, recorded in the unique and passionate style for which Desert Wind is known. The back album cover has the names of many various and popular rhythms used by belly dancers. The thirty-two (32) songs are dance length, and there are drum solos to mix and match for complete routines ranging from fast 2/4 intros to drum breaks to slow and beautiful veil work. Musical styles range from rock to classical to jazz with the distinctive spice of Middle Eastern and Mediterranen scales, and of course ~the rhythms! Rami Ziadeh's hand drumming represents the best of Mid-East rhythm work, and Alan's uncanny ability to blend the traditions of East and West is a refreshing move in today's unsettled world. Lindy Gomez did a fabulous job with Alan's rendition of the Spanish traditional song called La Llorona, and Andalin's flute playing over the Middle Eastern rhythms on Wind Drums is exhilarating. The moods range from upbeat and exciting to mystical, even haunting and magical. If you don't love it ALL, as I do, then I believe you will find within this work at least some songs that call your name.

5 out of 5 stars Exercise to the Music of Desert Wind.......2006-03-25

Speaking strictly as a non-dancer but ardent fan of belly dance, I found the music on World Dance to be light, easy to listen to, and quite exotic -- a blending of the old world with the new. I am currently producing a fitness DVD for belly dancers, and I have selected several of the cuts on World Dance (Disk I) to accompany the stretching, breakdown, and workout segments of the program. We conclude with a rousing cabaret performance to "Temple Dancer." The music and movements fit like a hand in a glove. Desert Wind is a group of truly gifted musicians. If you really enjoy listening to Middle Eastern-style music, this is one CD set that you absolutely need to hear!

1 out of 5 stars Desert Wind's World Dance.......2006-01-30

Not the best for dancability. The rhythm and the melodies don't seem to go together. I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Moving - In More Ways Than One!.......2005-12-14

I received this about a month ago and haven't stopped playing it or dancing to it. I wanted this CD for belly dance, but it's so much more than that. In fact, if you're just building your music library as I am for belly dance, this may not be the best choice as one of your early selections if you want to shimmy to bounce all the coins off the belt - but it's still a must-have. Desert Wind's music is very flowing and enables the dancer's moves to merge with the music. This isn't just another new age CD - this band has their own unique sound. I honestly believe that if someone played one of their songs that I haven't heard before, I could identify them.

The rhythms are somewhat slow - not a lot of 'shimmy 'til your butt falls off' drumming here although there are some great medium/fast beats and an out of this world drum solo! The beats are strong and very easy to dance to. It is perfect for warm-ups and for taxim and slow moves with the veil or sword. I really love this music for spiritually focused dance or moving meditation. Best of all, it's suitable for just listening. It's both relaxing and uplifting at the same time.

The music on this CD moves the soul as well as the body. It is deep, beautiful and glorious - especially CD #2, which actually has a Middle Eastern rendition of Amazing Grace! If you're into or open to the Goddess, songs such as "Om Tara," "Sarasvati," "Mother of Light" and "Your Light Comes Through" are all incredible for devotion or for just feeling immersed in spirit. "I Am" is also very nice and the dramatic haunting beauty of "La Llarona" can not be put into words. It can bring one to tears, especially if you are familiar with the legend.

Desert Wind ends the collection with the hilarious, bluesy "Metaphysical Blues." There are over two hours of music for the price of one CD here. Highly recommended for moving body, mind and soul!

5 out of 5 stars A Spectrum of Romance in American Musical Composition.......2006-01-15

Often American music is thought to be jaunty, combative, or tragic in content, especially when it comes to songs/lieder for the classical repertoire. This engaging CD takes umbrage with that misconception and in presenting some twenty-eight songs by various composers clearly identifies the romantic side of American composers.

Here are songs well known and not so well known by familiar and not so familiar composers, and in the hands of tenor Robert White and pianist Samuel Sanders they all come across as important. Included are rarities by composers such as Amy Beach, Theodor Chanler, Isabelle Firestone, Eric Ewazen, Albert Hay Malotte, Marc Marder, John Musto and Richard Hageman, with popular composers Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg, along with the greats: Ives, Schuman, Hindemith, Barber, Thomson, Korngold, Copland. Rorem, Bolcom, Corigliano, and Griffes. It is a huge spectrum of work and while some are less successful than other, they all are given respectful and loving renditions by White and Sanders. It is great fun to hear Firestone's famous 'If I could tell you' that opened the Voice of Firestone for so many years along side Samuel Barber's gorgeous 'Sure on this shining night' and Aaron Copland's settings of Emily Dickinson's poems.

This a rare treat for connoisseurs of lieder and for lovers of beautiful songs. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

3 out of 5 stars a rare gem of a CD.......2002-07-08

Sure On This Shining Night is not my usual musical cup of tea...yet, it has become one of my favorite CDs. This collection of American Romantic songs has burrowed its way into my heart.

There is a universality to the longing involved in Romanticism. These songs capture this feeling perfectly. From the first song to the last, these songs do one thing perfectly: evoke an emotional response.

This is due in no short measure to the wonderful performance Robert White gives. Rather than being merely technically accurate, White actually gives each of these songs a life of their own. He achieves this effect by getting inside not only the words, but the feelings involved.

Some of the highlights for me are: the lovely and memorable "Rose Marie," Ewazen's setting of Blake's "The Tiger," a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer" and the haunting "Never More Will the Wind."

Samuel Sanders is a worthy musical companion to White. His playing is reciprocally lovely and introspective. The notes are extensive and informative as well.

Even though it may be an acquired taste in our postmodern age, I give Sure On This Shining Night my full recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Nelson - My Favorite Composer.......2004-08-06

Having worked with Mr. Nelson personally, I find him and his music to be an inspiration to classical music composition of the 21st century. Nelson takes full advantage of the dynamic and aesthetic potential a wind symphony has to offer: from the light and fun "Rocky Point Holiday" to the dark and powerful "Epiphanies". This recording is a must-have for anyone having any taste in classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!! The Best Ron Nelson Collection Around!!.......2003-11-14

This is yet another example of one of the best band sounds on any audio recording. The Dallas Wind Symphony under the baton of Jerry Junkin and Ron Nelson himself produces an interpretation of some of Ron Nelson's masterwoks that is so spectacular that I challenge anyone to find a better one. I give this recording all of the praise that a collection of recordings of this caliber deserves. Well done Dallas Wind Symphony! This CD contains many examples of what a truly talented wind ensemble can do. This disc is a must-have item for any student of music or just someone who enjoys wind band music. Band Music just doesn't get much (if any) better than this. Once again: Well done Dallas Wind Symphony!!

5 out of 5 stars Band Music to Treasure.......2001-05-01

I love a good disc of band music. There are some real standards here--the Rocky Point Holiday and the Sonoran Desert Holiday especially. This disc features the Dallas Wind Symphony--a group that usually puts out a good CD. The notes are especially informative--a nice treat for band historians and enthusiasts. The Courtly Airs and Dances is a nice find--I found myself paritcularly engaged by the Saltarello and the Sarabande; as is the Passacaglia and the Chaconne. Another wonderful recording by Reference!

5 out of 5 stars HIFI sound and more.......2000-04-20

An EXCELLENT quality recording, especially the low organ pedal tones on the last track (16-32hz). The last 10 seconds of the CD has a continuous 16hz pedal C!

5 out of 5 stars A Sonic Blockbuster!.......1999-02-04

Reference Recordings has scored again with this delightful, challenging, life enhancing music by Ron Nelson. Bravo!
