Claude Chalhoub

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Produced by, and featuring some performances from, experimental guitarist Michael Brook, Claude Chalhoub's self-titled album charts exotic musical territory by meshing Western and Indian classical and Arabic music, occasionally peppering the mix with modern influences such as rock and ambient. Lebanese composer/violinist Chalhoub also plays other instruments (piano, harmonium, and viola), and his approach here is to find parallel elements in the diverse styles he embraces. He is unafraid to unite Western strings and Eastern percussion, or electric instruments with organic ones. Throughout the album, genre lines become blurry. The sweeping Arabic strings of "Red Desert" are accompanied rhythmically by Indian tabla and propulsive rock drumming; flute, guitars, bass, and keyboards also figure into the composition. "Don't Wake Me Up" effortlessly traverses Arabic and classical string orchestrations, and it integrates Spanish guitar and lively tabla playing in the right spots. "Two Angels" highlights the album's omnipresent string octet by exploring an Eastern mode while the piano accompaniment delves into a Western one. Then "Kaa" and the epic "Melancholia" find Chalhoub and Brook in a mesmerizing ambient mood. (Incidentally, "Baddour" features guest Pakistani singer Farroukh Fateh Ali Khan, brother of the late Nusrat.) Chalhoub's sensual synthesis of styles is truly enchanting. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars An aural delight.......2007-03-30

One of the most beautiful albums my ears have had the pleasure of listening to.

5 out of 5 stars simply gorgeous.......2006-09-03

I stumbled across this CD in a used shop and bought it on intuition alone. It turned out to be quite a gem. The classical music with an arabic touch is superb, the violin is gorgeous, and the occasional low-key beats on some tracks adds a contemporary touch that makes me think of another Claude (Challe). This is the perfect music to play on a Sunday morning...or, for that matter, anytime. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars It's really good...anytime!.......2005-11-28

When purchasing this album from Amazon I didn't know quite what to expect. I'll be honest and say that I got it mainly for the performances featuring percussionist Ronny Barrak.

If you've purchased any music of this type before you may have found some forms at both ends of the spectrum (Good & Bad) This one is good! The opening song is just right as it sets the feel for the whole album rather well and can even stand on it's own. This album features songs that groove, occasionally bounce, and that even give support to a melancholy mood. I'm sure you'll find at least one thing you can get from this album. And if just that '"one thing"' can make a whole book worth reading then surely that would hold true for an album.

5 out of 5 stars East meets west with a added touch of classical........2005-10-27

If you are at all into the Buddha Bar CD's then you will love this CD. It's got some great Middle Eastern music some with beats some very classical and some cinematic and some just plain awesome! Stand out tracks on here included are Don't Wake Me Up (the original and the Spring mix versions), Red Desert, Gnossienne (the original by Satie) and this version is excellent adding the Middle Eastern touches and Meloncholia. Awesome CD!

5 out of 5 stars The ancient becomes modern, East and West merge.......2004-06-13

In this exciting album, Claude Chaloub puts a new spin on our paradigms with his own, very passionate and unique interpretations of both Eastern and Western music, marrying many genres, especially in "Don't Wake Me Up." Satie's "Gnossienne" is seen through an entirely new and unexpected understanding, and the spirit is opened for new surprises. This CD is an exotic excursion of contemporary interpretations of musics of the world, an unforgettable experience.
