For its third album, Loga Ramin Torkian's modern Persian collective sets the words of 11th-century poet Omar Khayyám to music through soaring female vocals courtesy of Mamak Khadem. Like the group's last album, Unfolding gives Eastern music a Western twist. Torkian's guitar playing provides the cornerstone for the album. His rapid acoustic strums race along with Bikram Ghosh's frenetically dancing tabla on "Turquoise Land." His ambient axework glides through a delicately woven tapestry of electric cello, percussion, and voice on "Evanescent," while the sublime combination of his quarter-tone guitar and Martin Tillman's electric cello on "Through the Shadows, Part 1" generates ambient music without the requisite synthesizers. Earthy and organic with subtle electric instrumentation, Unfolding is a superior follow-up to Axiom of Choice's Narada World debut, Niya Yesh. --Bryan Reesman

1 out of 5 stars Axiom of Choice's "Unfolding" album: don't buy!!!.......2004-09-29

I'm sorry for Loga Ramin Torkian and Narada Productions, but this album is something everyone should AVOID TO BUY! I'm used to Ghazal's Persian and Indian Improvisations and as I rate 5 stars Kayhan Kalhor and Shujaat Husain Khan's works, I HAVE TO rate only 1 star (yet that's too much!!) this miserable, poor album: each track has no structure, no beginning, no close, no range. This 2002 year album has nothing to do with 2000 year Axiom of Choice's "Niyayesh" album, a wonderful piece of work, gorgeous and magnificent!
I would never suggest "Unfolding" to a friend! (neither to an enemy!). I'd buy "Niyayesh" instead.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2003-03-03

After listening to classical and World Music for over 40 years, I have to say that this album is a masterpiece in every respect. Never before anybody has accomplished to bring the Persian music to the western listeners in an acceptable form like the "Axiom of Choice" have done.
The piece "Evanescent" in this album is a work of art and the silky voice of Mamak Khadem is the crowning of this album. The recording is first grade and comes as close as possible to the quality of SACD. Only a very high quality sound system would bring the huge amount of professionalism of this recording to light or else you could hear that "nasal" tone in Mamak Khadem,s voice that one of the reviewers has noticed.
I strongly recommend this album to anyone who is interested in Persian music as well as World music. I give this album 5 stars for the performance and 5 stars for the recording.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2002-12-06

I saw this band in a concert and I was amazed by their ingenuity and creativity. Unfolding is beautiful, alive and refreshing. It leaves you thirsty for more and You will want to listen to it over and over. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Sombre occidental/oriental fusion.......2002-09-16

Unfolding is another experiment in musical East/West fusion. This time, the focus is on radif--traditional Persian modes and melodies. Axiom of Choice blends classical rhythms and lyrics with occidental instruments. Guitar, cello, and keyboards intermingle with duduk, ney, kamancheh, and tabla. The central instrument appears to be Loga Ramin Torkian's quarter-tone guitar, which introduces "Parting Ways With the Soul" in a startling manner.

The result of the fusion is not always to my liking. Although I enjoy the first track, "Mystics and Fools," the next song, "Evanescent" is far too New Age for my taste.

Unfolding showcases the poetry of Omar Khayyam, medieval philosopher, mathematician, and writer of the influential Ruba'iyat. Also at the forefront are the vocals of Mamak Khadem. Her voice is strong and occasionally somewhat nasal--not sweet and flitting like many traditional Asian female vocalists. In a way, her voice reminds me of Azam Ali's.

If you like world music with melancholic overtones, you just might like Unfolding. If you're seeking an introduction to Persian music, this is the album to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Investment in Persian culture.......2002-09-02

This CD has it all--commanding the poetry of Omar Khayyam, Axiom of Choice has created an exquisite masterpiece of music that takes the listener on a journey, transcending beyond the minute mental drudge of the everyday, allowing one to see and appreciate the interconnectedness of all things, through time and space.
The music has an orinigal vitality incorporating traditional and unexpected sounds that please the ears of those with differing musical aesthetics. A great investement in Persian culture--music, poetry, history, language and philosophy.

It's a fortunate state of affairs that there seems to be no shortage of promising young piano players in today's jazz world, with figures such as Jason Moran, Bill Charlap, and others releasing albums that point to years of creativity to come. But it would be a shame if that means Aaron Goldberg's fine new piano trio album, Unfolding, gets lost in the shuffle. Goldberg has already proved his chops as the pianist for the Joshua Redman Quartet and the Darren Barrett Quintet, and his 2000 debut, Turning Point, showed a thoughtful compositional side to his ability as well. On Unfolding, he sounds like he's not out to prove anything, and the result is a piano trio album rich with nuance and subtlety, highlighted by smart original compositions that sometimes seem to teeter on the brink between bluesy swing and free-form group improvisation. There are moments--as on an inventive reworking of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and his own intriguing "If and Only If"--that Goldberg recalls a young Herbie Hancock, and the engaging and constant interplay between Goldberg and his excellent band mates, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, also sometimes recalls the expansiveness of early 1960s Blue Note recordings by figures such as Andrew Hill and Jackie McLean. Mostly though, Unfolding is notable for the highly original nature of Goldberg's tunes and style. --Ezra Gale

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough variety.......2001-12-16

I first heard Aaron Goldberg play live with Joshua Redman in my home town. Then I bought his first CD "turning point", which I wasn't too satisfied with, but maybe that was because I needed to listen to it more. His recent album, "unfolding" is much better, however, I kind of wish he would include more of a variety. Perhaps chose more up tempo pieces, since I know he's (...) on those burnin tunes. There is however one piece, "Mao's Blues" which is an excitingly bright choice for later in the album, since preceding pieces were relatively laid back and slow. An Interesting rendition of Coltrane's "equinox" took me by surprise. I have listened to that piece over and over again. Overall, I am glad to have purchased this album, however there are several lagging points.

5 out of 5 stars sami spirit infuses music.......2007-01-10

Mari Boine and her group are are extremely tight. They weave together a different kind of music that brings a whiff of cool, fresh nordic air at the same time as the driving rhythm warms the blood...

5 out of 5 stars Mari Boine is great, but selections are redundant.......2001-09-11

Mari Boine has become one of my favorite vocalists from around the world. The rhythms of music and melody join a style that is at once like many modern folk vocals and yet is quite unique in that it maintains a tradition of Finnish joik that sounds less surreal and electronic than Wimme, for example, yet not constricted in tradition that would make it sound like an ethnographic sampling. The beat is deep and her voice is rich, strong, beautiful, yet simple in some ways.

A word of caution. The selections on this CD are significantly redundant to those found on another title, Radiant Warmth. And, for twice the price (import)..I would suggest that you purchase the alternative, instead. But, if you are a collector of her work, then you'd want to consider Leahkastin (Unfolding).

5 out of 5 stars WOW - Amongst the best Women Vocalists worldwide.......2001-02-22

For over four years I've been looking for this CD. I've had the honor of hearing Mari & her band in concert and this is the closest you can get to the live experience. No matter the emotion, you will feel it while listening to this music. Pay the price of this CD, it's more than worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Intimate, warm and powerfull.......2000-01-21

Surely Mari's best album so far. With a voice that seems to drain it's power from somewhere deep in the earth and an atmosphere that might bring the dead back to life.

5 out of 5 stars Chills up your spine.......1999-08-16

Powerful juxtaposition of light and dark, passion and control, with an undertone of the primitive. Best if listened to when surrounded with visual images of the Deep North.

3 out of 5 stars no surprise here.......2007-02-20

what can I say, aaron funk is continuously brilliant. This album is not "the best" but its most certainly not the worst either. thats why I gave it 3 stars. Its good, mid paced vsnares. and in its own way previews what he would later do with pom poms and hospitality.

bottom line, you wont be let down unless this is your intro to vsnares, in which case go with meathole or higgins ultra low.

5 out of 5 stars Complex IDM Ingenuity.......2007-01-04

I am yet to hear more VS so I can't know if this is my favorite Aaron Funk release. However, this album inspired me in my music substantially. HCCBU is an overwhelming blast of the most detailed rhythms I've ever heard buffered with ever changing melody....from start to finish (with the exception of 'Aaron'). Although the tracks have distinguishable themes (probably wont seem like it after your first listen), there are very few loops. The rhythms and melodies that tend to repeat I would rather define as "patterns."

The sounds used for the rhythms range from the talking calculator to Pac Man. They all seem to be digital, though. This album is quite vibrant in content. So much that it is easy feel discouraged by Aaron's lack of sympathy to formulaic music. As a result, it might seem to have emotion (more robotic). But for those of us who enjoy the sound of complex perfection, this album is bliss. I listen to it when I'm in my most alert state of mind. If you're having trouble digging this, try it with some coffee! 8]

And is it just me or does it seem like the songs get more and more difficult to swallow as the album progresses?

My favorite track is undoubtedly Li^2CO^3. Others are Vida, Cardium Lung Jacket (awesome name!), and Nineteen 1319.

Be patient with this album. It grows on you. Still growing on me.

5 out of 5 stars LANDMARK ACHIEVMENT........2006-05-14

first there was aphex twin's SAW 85-92. Then there was Squarepusher's HARD NORMAL DADDY. Some important releases by Warp went by but without a doubt the third milestone of electronic music has come from the iron clad cortex of venetian snares aka aaron funk in the form of HUGE CHROME CYLINDER BOX UNFOLDING. Those who believe this to be a copycat of Autechre's LP CONFIELD need to sit through this album AS A WHOLE a few more times. In the words of u-ziq, believe.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite venetian snares CD!.......2005-05-18

this CD is it for me, i love everyting by venetian snares, but i have to say that this is favorite, it doesnt even sound like someone is composing it, it just sounds like it is happening on its own, that it just exists. to the closet miriah carey fan who gave it one star, why dont you get a synth and put a 2 year old in front and see what you get, better yet, if it is so rnadom, why dont you just pound on keys and see if it sounds anything like this. the mathematics behind aarons work are very complex, it all just works together even though it may seem a little random, you find it is not random at all, it is just more complex the 4/4 beats most are used to, it is a shame you are missing the beauty and the genius of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Luddites need not apply........2005-02-16

I read a review that went something like this:
"Hold your horses before accepting Aaron Funk as the next big thing. One, he has no concept of even basic melody. Two, his rhythmic vocabulary is monophonic, not polyphonic; there is a difference."

This individual lacks any sense of rhythm that strays from the general backbeat(4/4 time) that one will hear on the radio. While Aaron Funk is himself quite familiar with jazz rhythms and time signitures, his music reflects this. The music that he is making is years ahead of both Jenkinson and Richard D. James, though each of these relics have quite impressive histories, respectively. It is upsetting for someone who appreciates experimental, forward-thinking music to hear luddites complain about progress. If you dont like experimental electronica that actually demands your attention, go buy a Jock Jams CD. Funk has been involved in the art of making interesting music for over a decade now and his experience shows. "Huge Chrome Box" is probably his most complex and enchanting album. Though I do appreciate the old days of simple Drum'n'bass and Acid, I think that electronic music has recently been taking a more complex shape, which is very nice.

4 out of 5 stars Acid Canadian Psychedelia.......2007-03-25

Get out the lava lamp, love beads and granny glasses! This classic 1967 LP was recorded in NYC at the height of the Flower Power Movement. It features David Dalton and Victoria Sackville on vocals and many other musicians of the day in a free-for-all bun.

Recorded during the height of the Flower Power Movement, classic 1967 free form LP that features lots of sitars, chimes, harpsichord and other far out sounds. Even includes notes on how to spice up your parties using TV's, kaleidoscopes, and other "natural things"

Crazed and hilarious acid exploitation album that goes far out enough to become genuinely psychy, like a second tier Deep. One side is cheesy garage psych including the classic "Play your game", the other is 'meditation' featuring strange fairytales, Hare Krishna chanting, and more. The short spoken segment on Pebbles vol 3 that's puzzled many comes from this LP. A Canadian mono release exists.
