Focus on the Recordings.......2007-07-23
The price is killer and you HAVE to buy it, but be warned: these are not the best recordings, you get what you pay for.
First of all, I'm not a Vivaldi expert, but I've heard his compositions throughout my life in so many different places and recordings and have a vague idea of how some have to be played. Secondly, I'm not a classical music connoisseur, but I love it and have over 300 discs of various composers and styles. Third, I know what a good audio recording should sound like and this will influence my critique of some discs in the collection. Finally, it's easy to get lost among all the tracks contained, so in some cases I will give you my favorite tracks in a disc.
I'm sorry, but I've only reached disc 20 of the box-set, as I listen to more this review will be expanded.
DISC 1:
Why would you use an AAD recording as a first impression for a 40 disc box-set and for the "Four Seasons", which is probably Vivaldi's best know work. The concertos are played enthusiastically, but lack any additional virtuosity to put it ahead of other much better recordings out there.
DISC 2:
Same as DISC 1, played and recorded by the same people.
DISC 3:
The pieces in this disc are VERY well played, nonetheless, you can hear heavy breathing from the soloist which can be a bit annoying.
DISC 4:
Very well performed as well, heavy breathing is less present.
DISC 5:
A very good recording, excellent execution by the hapsichord and good by the recorder.
Tracks 4, 6, 7 and the whole "La Notte" are extraordinary.
DISC 6:
Exquisitely recorded and performed by the Budapest Strings.
DISC 7:
Marvelous performance on the whole disc.
Tracks 22 & 24 are non-plus-ultra.
DISC 8:
Great performance too.
Suggested tracks: 7, 12, 15, 24
DISC 9:
To have an original baroque organ playing is a plus.
Solo strings are lacking in quality (for example: tracks 6 & 7).
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 8, 15
DISC 10:
Despite being and ADD recording, the quality is fairly good. The cello is very well played.
Suggested tracks: 3, 4, 12
Excellent track: 13
DISC 11:
Same musical group and soloist as DISC 10. The contrabass is extremely distorted sometimes, and if you take into consideration that this is an ADD recording, it can get pretty bad. Some background noise is perceived.
Suggested tracks: 3, 6, 9
DISC 12:
The compositions are somewhat boring, either way the performance is plain decent.
Suggested tracks: 10, 12
DISC 13:
Good performance and sound quality.
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 6, 7
Excellent track: 12
DISC 14:
Good performance and sound quality too.
Suggested tracks: 10, 14, 16
Excellent track: 5
DISC 15:
Badly mixed, the basoon is blocking the whole ensamble by being in the foreground.
The playing precision is lacking.
An AWEFUL thing about this recording is that you can hear the basson key-sticking with the instrument and the saliva. It's horrible.
Such a pity, the sound of the basson with other instruments can be pretty interesting.
DISC 16:
Violins sound a bit off tempo.
Suggested tracks: 4, 8
DISC 17:
Good sound quality and performance.
Suggested tracks: 1, 7, 9
DISC 18:
Despite being an old recording, it is a very welcome one.
The performance is very well above par. Tempo is fantastic.
The quality of the recording could have been better due to some string plucking that is heard and which can become bothersome.
These are some of Vivaldi's best know tunes.
Suggested tracks: 4, 6, 13
Excellent tracks: 1, 3
DISC 19:
Lively recording.
Track 6 is the same piece found in another disc in the collection, but with a better performance.
DISC 20:
By now you've heard all of this pieces before in the other discs. Nothing new here, nor better.
This is a fantastic deal!.......2007-02-25
With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are
The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance
This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!
If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me
So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion
Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25
But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.
Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.
$70....when was this???.......2006-11-25
$70/40... you do the math........2006-04-07

Beautiful Italian Music.......2006-04-09
Many years ago, I used to borrow the vynil record that has the same songs, from a public library.
My memory of this music is so good, that I bought the CD when the vynil records disappeared.
The music is rhythmic, melodic, inspiring.
I'm proud and happy that I bought this CD.

Jane Eaglen, today's most acclaimed interpreter of Wagnerian heroines, takes on 11 post-Verdian ones, only three of whom she has portrayed on stage: Ponchielli's Gioconda, Puccini's Turandot, and Santuzza from Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana. The program is an interesting mix of beloved and unfamiliar arias. In addition to the operas already mentioned, they come from Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, Catalani's La Wally, Boito's Mefistofele, and several from Puccini. The disc begins with Butterfly's famous "Un bel di" and closes with her heartbreaking death scene. Eaglen's resplendent voice illuminates every note, soaring triumphantly and effortlessly over the orchestra. The top range especially is glorious; there are numerous thrilling high B-flats, B's, and C's. Her voice is a bit heavy for the lightness of "Un bel di" and the coloratura in "Mefistofele," but Eaglen projects Marguerite's madness with extraordinary empathy. Though renowned primarily for her dramatic roles, she seems to have the strongest affinity for the lyrical, mournful arias here. Sister Angelica's lament for her dead child, Adriana's somber resignation, and Santuzza's aching sorrow are especially memorable. Butterfly's death is perhaps the disc's highlight, both for the intensity of expression and the glorious singing. It is, of course, very difficult to create operatic characters in excerpts performed out of context. There is not enough differentiation between these very dissimilar heroines, but Jane Eaglen's incomparable voice and emotional honesty make one long to hear her bring them fully to life in the opera house. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The most beautiful voice.......2004-11-29
A Vocal Battleship in full sail.......2002-04-11
She has stage experience of many of these roles - I've been fortunate enough to her her Tosca, Turandot and Gioconda live. The main drawback of this disc for me is the relative lack of involvement Eaglen seems to show. No matter how red-blooded and passionate these Italian ladies are, they just don't seem to float Eaglen's boat in the same way that her Wagnerian ladies do. Some of the excerpts are touching, such as those from Madama Butterfly (real bitterness as well as sorrow) and Gioconda. However, too often one has the feeling that she is simply singing words without attaching real meanings to them, and I suspect that this is partly to do with Carlo Rizzi's deeply uninspiring (and he a native Italian!!) conducting.
So most of the pleasures of this disc are vocal. And what pleasures! How many other sopranos can you name who can sing "In Questa Reggia" without appearing to bat an eyelid? Ditto "Suicido"? There is admirable control of all registers and a blessed lack of wobble. I enjoyed the "Edgar" excerpt (ably accompanied by the Royal Opera Chorus) and her Santuzza. The voice is simply too large for some of the most delicate pieces (I listened to "Io son l'umile ancella" alongside Renee Fleming's version and I'm afraid Fleming's exquisite control won hands down) but by and large she makes an intoxicating sound.
So - a flawed recording and one that doesn't do full justice to a highly impressive singer. But certainly one for her fans and really impressive listening for voice-fanciers. However, nothing really beats trhe thrill of hearing a voice like this in the theatre.
Quite dissapoited.......2002-03-01
but i don't like the style of the conductor,i feel nothing
with his conducting, under his baton, jane can do nothing but just
sing only,like other reviews,her voice is beautiful,huge,warm,
but less poweful, after this album,i bought her "Four Last Songs",
she did a good job with this album, her voice is pure and the legato line she made was one of the best four last songs i have heard(although norman's was the best).
I've sang for five years,it's not easy to control a voice which is heavy, broad or huge, jane has done her best.
I like her,and i'm look forward to her Aida.
MAGNIFICENT ARIAS RICHLY DELIVERED.......2002-01-29
This CD focuses on the work of the incomparable Giacomo Puccini, presenting seven arias from five operas. Granted, I have a bias here because of my admiration of this composer's work, nonetheless I would unequivocally state that these arias find hitherto unexplored dimensions with the emotional and vocal agility of Eaglen. Her voice embracing "Che tua madre" is especially moving.
With Tosca we again experience "Vissi d'arte," now transformed into a poignant prayer. Turandot is, of course, without peer and "In questa reggia" the perfect vehicle for Eaglen to showcase her vocal amplitude and passion.
Richly delivered, magnificent arias, what more could one ask?

It would be difficult to fault the singing of Angela Gheorghiu on these discs (the second, bonus CD contains "Vissi d'arte" from her complete recording of Tosca). She goes through almost the entire Puccini catalog of heroines--Mimi and Musetta, Liu, Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Liu and Turandot, Lauretta, Suor Angelica, Minnie (from Fanciulla), as well as the gals from La Rondine, Edgar, and Le Villi, and her exquisite, fine-grained, unique sound--with its dusky lower register--is always interesting and beautifully inflected. Her attention to dynamics is admirable, verbally, she seems genuinely involved in each character. The voice can deliver as much power, as in the end of the first Edgar aria, as gentleness, in Suor Angelica's "Senza Mamma" as needed. But somehow she doesn't make any one of the characters entirely her own. This may be a bit picky, but maybe that's the case with recital albums. Let's face it--her voice is irresistible and her husband, Roberto Alagna, adds his bronzed tones to two of the selections. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Commitment, passion and problems. . . ........2007-01-28
"camp".
OK: We all know there is a type of "opera queen" of all sexes and sexual orientations that thrive on bashing
certain singers while lauding others. This is not a war. I resisted Gheroghiu for years due to the hype and
marketing. I have not heard her live, so I don't know if she is out-faching herself by singing damn near
everything alla Callas.
What I DO hear is a rather "ugly" voice (again alla Callas) that is so distinctive as to be instantly recognizable. There is that middle European "keening", rapid vibrato quality that Vishnevskaya had.
What I hear above ALL however, is commitment and passion. There are pitch problems, AGAIN alla Callas, sharp
here, flat there, driven "ugly" sounds: all the hallmarks of the Kunstdiva, of which I think she might be the
reigning example in our time.
The Puccini style here is questionable: let's lay that off on the conductor.
Fleming, Gheorghiu, Netrebko, et al: committed, intelligent, driven women who make the world a better place
in which to live and listen.
Have your favorites, and lay off the others in print.
Flawed, but nevertheless excellent.......2006-02-04
Ms. Gheorghiu's voice is there as always, with it's dark, round timbre but, as I beleive a fellow reviewer has noted, they sound a bit alike. The usual passion she injects in this music is not entirely present, she somehow sounds uninspired.
Even so, the good outweighs the bad, and that's what makes this an excellent addition to your musical library; there's not a misplaced note anywhere, her gorgeous voice is a delight to the ears, and the musical selection is quite good and interesting, even if she's not up to the challenge of Turandot (at least not yet). For some reason that I don't share, a few people have found the conducting bad, but that's the aspect I pay less attention to, unless it's enormously obvious.
In short, this is a disc fans of Gheorghiu and good singing can't miss.
Disappointing Puccini recital.......2005-12-06
Vissi D'arte is very good, and In questa Regia is great, very different from how it is usually done, but Tu, Tu, Piccolo Iddio is not good at all and I don't like Quando Me N'vo either, I have heard much better performances of this classic, especially by Anna Netrebko, who is hot on Angela's heels as the next great diva. Watch your back, dear Angela!
Also, the programming on this album is strange, why is Vissi D'arte on a seperate disc...?
For anyone who loves this voice, it would still be a nice recital, but I am disappointed, I expected better.
Mixed bag.......2005-12-06
Anton Coppola's conducting is too slow for my taste most of the time. He seems to love every note Puccini wrote (which is understandable!), but his pacing undermines the drama in some of these selections. He also doesn't get much force out the orchestra when it is needed, such as in Turandot and the Madama Butterfly finale.
EMI's packaging is ridiculous. One aria, "Vissi D'arte" from Tosca, is on a separate disc, billed as a "bonus CD." It is from her earlier recording of the opera conducted by Antonio Pappano. The case is like a hardcover book, which looks nice, but does not fit in typical CD storage spaces.
Pitch problems and vocal disappointments.......2005-09-27

Just the best of the best........2006-02-08
Unlike her studio recitals, unequal and mostly recorded when her voice was starting to decay, this live records take you back to the glorious early fifties when the young Callas was changing the history of opera forever.
The first 6 CD's are scenes from stage performances and the last 2 from recitals.
Chronollogically, this compilation starts with the legendary (and controversial) 1951 Mexico-City "Aida" and ends with the 1964 Covent Garden "Tosca" (when Callas' voice was just the shade of itself but at the peak of her dramatic skills).
Listen to the electrifying poetry of the 1952 "La sonnambula", to the devorating flame of 1955 "La traviata" and "Lucia". Not to forget the 1952 "Norma", the 1957 "Ana Bolena" and some rarities like "Andrea Chénier", "Ifigenia in Tauride" and "Poliuto".
The only great absent of this collection is "Armida"...
As for the the 2 recital CD's, the first one contains arias from concerts between 1952 and 1958, when Callas was in full command of her voice. Nobody else was capable of singing arias from Nabucco and Lakmé on the same recital! And listen to the last aria: Wagner's Isolde's dead.
The second one, contains arias from 1959 to 1963. Here, Callas voice had diminished considerably and she was not anymore capable of the same technical miracles, but she still managed to give thrilling dramatical interpretations (listen to the dead scene of Madama Butterfly of the 1963 Paris recital!!!)
In 80% of this compilation you can hear the young Callas creating her own legend, giving herself completly on the stage.
