5 out of 5 stars the perfect album for turn-of-the-century psychadelia.......2007-01-08

i have heard over ten albums from this band so far & just cannot get enough of them. they are absolutely magnificent, one of the best neo-psychadelic noise rock bands out there right now. if you havent heard acid mothers temple yet & are interested in them, i recommend picking up either this album or starless & bible black sabbath first (or both) before hearing what else AMT have to offer, and oh, there's plenty. they are not only one of best sounding bands at the moment, but also one of the most prolific, they must have double the amount of albums the rolling stones did (though most of them are "unreleased")

if you're into anything like comets on fire, bardo pond, jessamine or fsa then definately check this band out.

5 out of 5 stars Gong taken to the next plane.......2006-12-29

I have been aware of this Japanese band, and I realize they have a giant back catalog stretching for ten years, and that they explored many different styles.

I bought Iao Chant from the Cosmic Inferno because the cover is a spoof of Gong's Camembert Electrique, then I discovered it was in honor of Pierre Moerlen, who just passed away when they made this CD. Not familiar with their other stuff (yet), I am unable to compare this to their other albums. But on this CD, there's no mistaking the strong Gong and Ozric Tentacles feel throughout. I guess that's little surprise when this is essentially a 50 minute version of Gong's "Master Builder" (which appeared on their wonderful album You). They have all the spaciness of Gong with very wild guitar playing from Kawabata Makoto that would even give Ozrics' Ed Wynne a run for his money! It's even hard to believe, but the intensity even rivals that of the Ozrics! There is no singing, unlike the Gong original, but there is some chanting, first in that more trippy Buddhist style, then the familiar Iao za ee zao ma ee mao ta ee tao now that you remember from "Master Builder", but then the band has their own tricks up their sleeves, including a wonderful mellow passage complete with glissando guitar before the band starts picking up. And even during the more repetitive moments, there's this intense and hypnotic effect going on throughout. I really think this band did Gong justice. They have a wild guitar player, Higashi Hiroshi gives us some really nice synth bubbles not unlike Tim Blake, and if they were to spoof one of their album covers, then make sure the music is every bit as good as Gong, if not better. Truly a wild, space rock album that every Gong and Ozric fan should have.

5 out of 5 stars Acid Mothers Temple&The Cosmic Inferno-'IAO Chant From The Cosmic Inferno' (Ace Fu Records).......2006-04-04

Holy cow! This has got to be one of the better Acid Mothers Temple releases I've ever heard, and that's saying something.'IAO Chant...' is AMT's homage/tribute to the late drummer of Gong,Pierre Moerlen;1952-2005.Don't assume just becuase you get one track here, just one track-"OM Riff From The Cosmic Inferno"(51:25)that this CD is in any way a let down.Because it most certainly is not. This lengthy piece is simply SO purely psychedelic,it makes my brain hurt.So glad the guys didn't merely repeat that classic "OM Riff" over and over.As it turns out,the epic develops into SOME creatively superb shapes, sound passages and segments. You'll see what I mean.Highly recommended + a true keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Burning snow? Is that what they're chanting?.......2006-03-28

Well, the repeated riffs and the vocal tag--burning in snow, is sounds like to me--make this a pleasure to hear. It's not as thickly recorded a sound as their other releases as the Cosmic Inferno, and I was happily surprised to hear how well it works as an extended musical effort. It ebbs and flows as you'd expect, but never settles into one groove for too long. Pre-75 Hawkwind comparisons are in order, but also the hints of Eastern music that chime in the more rarified hints behind the giant hooks--as in the closing seconds of this album. I don't bestow five stars very often for even my favorite music, but I must bow to these Japanese incarnations of mantra madness and admit their mastery of making one song flow so eloquently, so powerfully, and so enjoyably. Don't let their appearance, their comparative obscurity (they deserve far greater exposure and acclaim) or their relentless devotion to towering sonic constructions dissuade you: at their core, as shown with affection here, AMT + CI remember the sheer rush that good music grants us lucky all.
