Product Description
From the acclaimed singer/chanter of Disney's animated movie Lilo & Stitch and the amazing "Po'okela Chants" comes a brand new cd: "Call It What You Like...";

Kumu hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu offers these personal comments on this chanting style. "This is not the only way to chant, nor, the only way I chant. It is an alternative way of chanting/singing that I explore, develop and choose to do. I love to listen to the old chant styles, which are more instinctive and familiar to my ears. Yet, in my attempts to fabricate the same, it takes on a life of its own. The best way I've found to explain the complicacies of my music is to Call it what you like..."

5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

    5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

This CD is wonderful and awesome!! It is filled with more instrumentation and more back up singers than Po'okela Chants. Great harmonization and treatment of the native music. This CD makes you wish he would make more CD of this kind. I rated 5 stars because I could not give it 10!! Buy both of his CD's because they are worth more than the asking price.

This is my first hawaiian album, and it's very interesting. I was hoping to find more Lilo&Stitch-alike songs, but no, this album is more serious, although it's very good.

5 out of 5 stars We love this cd!!.......2005-09-28

Found this at the library and did not recognize the name but was intrigued. I loved it from the first song to the hidden track. When I got to the 3rd song, my children told me that it was the same singer that sang in Lilo and Stitch. Since then we have played it every day in the car, I work out to it and now I'm buying it because it has to go back to the library. Buy this amazing CD!

2 out of 5 stars What happened to Tom Kimmel??.......2007-04-07

I loved the albums "5 to 1" and especially "Circle Back Home"!! Tom Kimmel was my hero back then. Is all his other new albums like this one? I was so disappointed with this one. His raspy voice is almost gone. There is no power left! The style is totally different from earlyer releases. This one reminds me of many of the 90s week pop albums. Avoid this one, and get instead "Circle Back Home" (that one deserves 5 stars)!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting.......2005-01-04

I discovered Tom Kimmel when he played at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas -- he sang at my church, performing "That's What I Love About Rain." I was hooked from that moment on and had to have this album. I have listened to it over and over, and every song continues to speak to me. The melodies burrow themselves in your brain -- I can see why Tom's music has been covered by so many artists. There are many gems on this album -- the sad, wistful "Poetic Justice," the poignant "If I Fell from Grace With You," the upbeat "Tip of my Tongue" and "On to Something." "Trip on Love" is particularly guilty of becoming stuck in my head.

I recommend "Short Stories" very highly -- and on a side note, when I met Tom in Kerrville he was a great guy, so buying his records will help support not only a talented artist, but a genuinely nice guy as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Short Stories.......2001-10-30

Tom is a superb artist. He writes, records, Composes and performs both alone and with groups. He works with people from all walks of life--- the advantaged and the disavantaged alike. His music is relaxing, thoughtful, and somtimes haunting but always great. There is a message in each lyric.
    I recommend his work highly.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
