Though the cornerstone of Uilleann piping may be found in the British Isles' colorful Celtic culture, the commonly termed bagpipes have ventured far and wide, making themselves quite comfortable not only in traditional and contemporized Celtic musics, Scottish weddings, and wakes, but in indie-rock, inspirational, world, and New Age styles. An example of the latter is that of José Angel Hevia Velasco and his release Tierra de Nadie. As a young boy coming of age in Spain, Hevia forsook competitive cycling for piping, studying the Asturian bagpipe with a master. Having played often and well since his boyhood studies, Hevia here takes up the electronic bagpipes as well as the low whistle, forging a highly polished and reflective blend with his band, which includes bouzouki, bodhran, violin, electric guitar, and electronic programming. Moved to Tears.......2007-01-28

My wife Debbie and I took our annual trip to Disney World in Dec. 06. On
the day we spent at Epcot Center, we made it a point to see two shows.
After we left the Candlelight Processional I decided to stake out seats
for the Illuminations show (about three hours ahead of time). While I was
sitting in the seats we'd agreed on the technicians were testing the equipment for the show,including playing the music that counted down the
final half hour leading up to the show.(I heard this set of music twice)
Being a drummer and percussionist I have an affection for music that is
upbeat and jazzy,and not overpowering, but it's rare that a song moves me
to tears and one song did just that...twice. That song was Busindre Reel.
After Illuminations ended we were in a gift shop at Epcot and I asked a
clerk if they had any CDs of the preshow music and he said it wasn't
available but he told me how to find it on the internet. An eventual
google search led me to the Hevia CD.
Tierra Del Nadie is one of the few CDs I can listen to when I'm completely
stressed out and be relaxed by the time it's over. I've also added Busindre Reel and Gaviotes(Hevia's other song in the Illuminations preshow
set) to my practice tracks.
As a drummer and percussionist I've listened to or played music from all
over the world and I've been a Yanni fan for several years. All I can say
is Yanni better watch his back 'cause Hevia can give him some 'reel' serious competition!
I've been to Disneyland and Disney World enough times to know there are
two things don't skimp on:music and fireworks. For Hevia to have one
song in a Disney music lineup is a major accomplishment and having TWO
is almost unheard of. I hope Hevia realizes the significance of that
accomplishment and I look foreward to his next CD.

No-man's Land: A timeless and precious work of music.......2005-10-26

Jose Angel Hevia, a native of Asturias (Spain), managed to mix in this album the spirit that Afro Celt Sound System (now Afrocelts) carries in their albums, with a New Age twist. Conveying the local musical traditions of his region, at the center of all songs lies his multitone electronic (Asturian) bagpipe, surrounded by musical instruments from other latitudes: Scottish bagpipes, Arab lutes, Celtic Bodhrans and more contemporary tambourines, guitars, bass guitars, pianos, programmed loops, shakers and drums. All of them are combined in a seamless way that makes you feel as if for centuries they belonged together. In "Tierra de Nadie" (No-man's Land), they contribute (as Hevia himself says) to enrich "the cultural diversity of Mankind..."

If you enjoy this album, make sure to also get yourself a copy of the soundtrack to "The Sea Inside", by Alejandro Amenabar. Though not focused on Asturian traditional music, it has some beautiful songs inspired by the people and landscapes of neighboring Galicia.

Quite a coincidence.......2004-11-01

About 4 years ago I remember seeing a video on VH-1 that featured an artist using an odd looking/sounding set of bagpipes. I was interested but neglected to write down the name of the artist. I also remembered nothing about the name of the song other than it was "<something> Reel".

I eventually forgot about it.

Almost a year later I was walking through City Museum in downtown St. Louis and I heard some wonderful bagpipe music playing over the speakers. I asked the staff about it and got the name of the artist...on paper this time.

After I left the museum I went to a local Border's Books and Music and walked to the international section. When I found the CD, there on the cover was the artist I saw in the video all those months ago.

I have never regretted buying that CD and have introduced quite a few to Hevia's music.

One of a kind singer.......2007-01-10

Years ago when I first got into Ana Gabriel, I used to buy cassettes. I've had this album for years, and decided to replace it with the CD version. Enough said.

Her plaintive, passionate, and expressive voice is one of a kind. I could actually understand if someone doesn't like her voice, but I ABSOLUTELY love it.

I purchased this cd in 1995, Title track (tierra de nadie)I think one of Ana's best vocal performances/songs, But I have not seen her sing it live, Most of the album is POP with alot of emotions, But only 2 tracks here became timeless classics, 1.simplementes amigos 2.es el amor que llega. I truly recommend anyone to buy this cd who listens to spanish music. This is one of Ana's earliest sounds, truly she has gotten better and better with each album. Tierra de nadie buy it today.

"Tierra de Nadie" is an amazing album consisting of ancient Celtic music that at one time flowed through the small but scenic country that is Asturias, in northern Spain. The invigorating sound of the Gaita (bag pipes) throughout, is very stimulating to the senses. Several of the tracks (eg. Añada) contain Celic hyms that transfoms you back to a time when the Celts ruled nothern Spain. Other tracks like "Busindre Reel" are very energetic while others such as "Barganaz" are soft and soothing in nature. I highly recomend this CD to anyone who is looking for a fresh sound to the ancient rhythms of Asturias.

Hevia's Tierra de Nadie is one of the best CD performed in the last years. It is not new age nor one of those music labels that arise and dead thousand of times a week. Hevia's music is in the core of an ancient celtic culture:Asturias. A small country in the north of Spain, Asturias is an old land of green valleys, all day raining and proud man whose antique songs are here recovered using a new instrument: the electric pipe, created by the own autor. "Tierra de Nadie" is the last voice of a past that is vanishing. Perhaps it is your last oportunity.
