"One of the more unique American Recordings I have heard in recent years"

Product Description
The Elephant's Baby is indescribably witty, urbane, slick and all around unique. Fader has the proverbial way with words and her imagination is a frightfully bizarre living room full of animal noises, weird lovers, threatening furniture, strange childhood stories, and the occasional romantic holiday. It's all played out as cabaret (she calls her ensemble The Vaudevillains), part New York 1999 and part Berlin 1927. It's a cabaret act that has gone off its meds. It allows for nursery stories with masochistic leanings, simple love songs that catch you off guard, and a subtle sexuality and blatant carnality that are disarmingly sweet and slyly dark...

Arranger and conductor Damon Camona has assembled an orchestra of strings, woodwinds, percussion, reeds and brass that harkens back to the Carl Stalling ensembles of Looney Tunes fame. He has them spinning like tops, turning on a dime and a whim...It bubbles, growls, pops, and snaps, evoking merriment and foreboding in equal measure, lush to a fault, edgy to distraction...

[Fader and Carmona] seem to have fed each other's strange sensibilities to produce one of the more unique American Recordings I have heard in recent years."

The Elephant's Baby

The Elephant's Baby,Clare Fader,Raconteur,Remarkable and original songs rooted in cabaret and vaudeville. A decadent, sexy circus that leaves the listener crying out for more. Brilliant lyrics. The arrangements are the work of a twisted genius.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

5 out of 5 stars Mr Lucky.......2007-05-13

Dave Grusins arrangements of Gershwin and his work with Lee Ritenour and Brasil artists is astounding. He makes everything so listenable! So here we have him arranging the great original works of Hank Mancini. The magic of both these great musicians is overwhelming. Henry wrote some great classics. Dave Grusin gives them a freshness that you will want to listen to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Wife is happy now........2007-01-09

Wife had heard this CD on FM radio and secretly wrote it's name on slip of paper. I found it and got it for her for Christmas. "When mama is happy, everbody is happy."

5 out of 5 stars Moonlight homage!.......2006-06-08

Dave Grusin made a very heartfelt homage in Henry Mancini `s memory with this striving album that deserves all your special attention.

If I had to find any motive of complaint around this invaluable CD is the few number of songs. Perhaps Moon river, Charade, and Sunflower could be arranged and included because these three themes were emblematic and definitive in the winning career of Mancini

The only hope I have is that Cruisin makes a second album. But this is fantastic entry to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars "Fresh, Interesting and Successful Music!".......2006-05-21

I remember collecting Mancini on vinyl when I was a kid. The phrase above was on one of the album covers.

I see Henry Mancini, in hindsight, as a classic example of how talent is consumer voraciously by the entertainment business. He enjoyed his success, to be sure, but it sucked everything out of him, too.

This album is distinguished by its final track though. First, I did not know that lyrics existed for "Soldier in the Rain," and wonder who wrote them. Second, to me, Grusin's choice of this track as the last depicted was no accident. Mancini was a devoted father and husband, and he wanted the best for his children, very much including his son. "That your someday child, never knows the rain."

Grusin's tribute to this great musician and composer is well-fitted and much welcomed.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Grusin Plays Mancini . . . Two For The Road.......2006-01-17

Dave Grusin's greatest influence and inspiration in his musical career was Henry "Hank" Mancini, and he dedicated this album in memory of the legendary composer. When he was younger and trying to decide what road to take, he thought of the music of Henry Mancini and some other composers such as André Previn and Elmer Bernstein.

According to Dave Grusin, Hank Mancini was "as generous with advice and enthusiasm as anyone he had known in this arena, the whimsical good humor you hear in his music was there in real life as well."

Dave Grusin is joined by some of the finest studio musicians in creating one of the best Henry Mancini tributes: John Pattitucci (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Russell Malone (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tollak Ollestad (harmonica), Gary Grant (trumpet), Andrew Martin (trombone), Jerry Hey and the Hot Band, Dan Higgins, Tom Scott and Eric Marienthal (sax). Diana Krall did the vocals on "Dreamsville" and "Soldier In The Rain."

This is Henry Mancini music in smooth jazz, so typical of Dave Grusin's innovative and jazz-oriented arrangements and it presented not only his skills but also his dedication to piano playing.

It's an awesome CD to listen to and enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and the artistry of Dave Grusin. You'll be delighted with all the selections especially his terrific interpretations of "Moment To Moment," "Two For The Road," "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Days of Wine and Roses."

Very highly recommended.

Album Description

The Elephant's Baby is indescribably witty, urbane, slick and all around unique. Fader has the proverbial way with words and her imagination is a frightfully bizarre living room full of animal noises, weird lovers, threatening furniture, strange childhood stories, and the occasional romantic holiday. It's all played out as cabaret (she calls her ensemble The Vaudevillains), part New York 1999 and part Berlin 1927. It's a cabaret act that has gone off its meds.

I found Clare Fader and the Vaudevillians after hearing "The Wine" (thanks, Tim Elliott!). Still my favorite song, but they are all excellent; great vocals, interesting instruments, and witty lyrics. Definitely off the beaten path kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat's Meow........2006-08-08

Refreshingly cool. Back-alley-smart. Street-sassy. Capricious. Non-cliched. Captivating. Intriguing. Humorous. Elegant. After-hours Martini mingle. The Cat's Meow. At times the album sounds simultaneously gritty and debonair--kinda' like Midnight Cowboy's Ratso in tux. That's my brief FIVE star review for Clare Faders "Elephants Baby." If you like this I'm sure you will dig her other musical creations as well. Do yourself a favor, enjoy one of her international concerts as I have in Gothenburg, Sweden! Stefano Musitano, Sweden

first time in quite a while that i have been happy with more than just one or two songs of a cd. i was very happy that i had bought this and it's still in my cd player.

5 out of 5 stars I'm sucking caffeine out of coffee stains!.......2005-10-18

Clare Fader has mastered bringing cabaret back to life. Her debut album contains some great songs and shows promise for the future (her future would produce an even better album a little while later).

1. Animal Charm - quirky, catchy, and fun... a sing-a-long type of song. A

2. Sister Of Mine - another catchy song. B+

3. The Wine - fun, quirky, and catchy... this song was featured on MTV's The Real World for a reason. I dare you not to sing along. A+

4. Love is the Cruelest Cliche - a slower song with strings, oboe, and piano backing Ms. Fader. B

5. Drunk on Skin - great lyrics, great music, Clare's done it again. A-

6. Wedding Day Lament - a slower, storylike song that'd fit perfectly into a musical. B

7. Alice - my least favorite Clare fader song... it's slow and not overly catchy... doesn't seem to fit well on the album, in my opinion- but I'm glad it's here, because it's something else from Ms. Fader. C

8. Johnny - the album picks back up in pace with this one... a great sing-along. A

9. Cabin Fever - another one I can't help but singing along to. How does she do it? Great lyrics. A-

10. Queen - a slow-down point again... but not necessarily bad. Another song that'd fit well into a musical. B

11. Isle of Summer - the climax of the musical that is the album. Wonderful way to close the album. A

4 out of 5 stars Alternative Listening .......2005-08-12

I was interested by this album from what I heard of the track "The Wine" especially the use of German made almost Garbo like in sound. I was pleasantly surprised at finding a kaleidoscope of listening pleasure whith each track containing its own unique sound and thoughtful lyrics - listen to "Drunk on Skin" or "Johnny" and be amazed. I am looking forward to listening to more of Clare Fader in future.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic choice for Galway & Mancini fans!.......1999-03-08

For those who are fans of Galway or Mancini, (or even those who are not) this is a fun, upbeat CD that will bring back a lot of movie memories. This combination of the talents of this pair make for a great listening experience. I have had this work in my music library for a long time, and am grateful that it is still available since my ex and I both wanted custody of it!

5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......1999-01-02

Galaway has awesome talent! This album isn't just for the classical type. It has a lot of fun, up-beat familiar tunes that everyone will enjoy. It's definetly one of Galaway's best. If you don't have it, go buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Parent's blessing!.......2004-01-02

I have two of these cd's. My kids are 2 and 4 and I bought the first cd when my daughter was a newborn. These have been a true blessing and most evenings, put ME to sleep along with my daughter as I'm getting her settled and to sleep. SOO soothing and relaxing.......just beautiful. The original cd had gotten a scratch on one song so I'm here on Amazon trying to buy yet another one. Great just to play when the kids are wound up just to sooth them.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Snooze..........2002-10-24

This compilation of songs is most restful for both the young and old. I received this CD as a gift years before the birth of my daughter and I used it's calming effect while studying calculus.

While working in a daycare this CD had twenty 3-5 year old children fast asleep within minutes. Very cool!

I just purchased a new copy of this CD as the old one is scratched and worn out. I now look forward to sharing this soothing music with my newborn baby girl. ****I highly recommend this CD for putting your little one to sleep.****

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL - if only it was available.......2002-08-19

As a highly active amateur cellist, this is my signature baby gift to all friends and family - all have commented at it's soothing effect when played at naptime or bedtime. This is a wonderful collection, well-played - BUT IT'S NEVER AVAILABLE. I'm now on a constant search to find used copies. I can only hope that they get back on the ball and restart production on this CD - so that all of you can enjoy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Get two so you can give one as a gift..........2001-11-07

This CD is made up of instrumental cello renditions of popular lullabyes.

My wife and I have given several of these CD's to parents of young children in the US and abroad. Without exception, the soothing cello tunes help mother and child alike to relax at the end of a busy day.

Webber performs sensitive interpretations of these long-beloved classics, including Braham's Lullabye and Rock a Bye Baby. The cuts provide wonderful comfort to a stressed world. My wife and I listen happily while reading and sitting in front of the crackling fire.

We love this album and are ordering 6 so we have some on hand for gifts to new mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully performed soothing, calming music.......1999-03-19

Julian Webber performs masterfully in this relaxing collection of peaceful lullabies. His technique is superb, and this CD will leave you snoring soundly if you play it at night, like I do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent spin on Pop Rock.......2006-06-20

I've had several of the tracks from this disc running through my head ever since the first time I heard them. Peal reminds me a lot of Tonic and Vertical Horizon. The musicianship is excellent, and the songs run the gamut from fun and uplifting to heartfelt and soulwrenching. I especially recommend Carousel Junkie, Down, and Maria, although I encourage you to find your own favorites.

This cd is good. I agree with the earlier review there was no beenie man and no ladies on there. I was looking for Lady saw . However , if you dont really understand reggae that much you might not want to buy it. This is dancehall , hardcore reggae and can be abit dirty. HOwever it is a good cd.

There is a problem with this record, much the same problem that it had on last year's version. The problem is that if you are a deep listening, dancehall reggae nut, you already know all these tunes, and may even own most of them as singles already. However, if you are not an aforementioned dancehall nut, then this record might just be perfect for you. The dancehall version of Strictly the Best this year has alot of the favorite artists going today including Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Sizzla, and Mad Cobra. And the tunes they pulled from the artists are arguably their biggest tunes of the year; Sufferah from Bounty Killer, Press Trigger from the snake and Tallup Tallup from Elephant Man. My favorites on the record are Sufferah of course, Wah Dat Fa by the underappreciated Baby Cham, very good tune and How It Ago by the fire man. My absolute favorite tune here however, is Fitness, by Bounty Killer and Angel Doolas, very slack tune, but just a really good, dark sounding tune. Capleton and Sizzla also both go the slack route with Tek It Off and Come On respectively (Sizzla not so much so as Capleton, but Come On is a really crazy sounding tune. I also like Highet Level by Elephant Man. The last track which is very out of place here is Jah is Always There by Warrior King, which VPRecords obviously put on this one to promote Warrior King's new record, Virtuous Woman, (which is awesome by the way)and it is a great track, but like i said much out of place. Overall, like i said, if you aren't too familiar with Dancehall this year, then by all means get this one, its a very good sounding album. Only complaint to VP, no Beenie Man? No woman DJ?
