4 out of 5 stars A relative success.......2007-07-11

From his multiple readings of the nine Beethoven symphonies, to his controversial, unconventional production of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, to his individual achievements in the realms of Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Sibelius, Mahler, Strauss, and Schoenberg, the Austrian conductor-legend Herbert von Karajan left his irreplaceable fingerprint on the world of music. However, in spite of all his brilliance in the aforementioned and unmentioned spheres, Georges Bizet's relentlessly celebrated opera Carmen was as musical tapestry Karajan never fully understood.

While Karajan aficionados plot their revenge for this seemingly gratuitous attack, it should be noted that he was not alone among conductors in this fault; in fact, when one considers than Carmen is the "C" in any beginner's guide to opera ("A" being Verdi's Aïda and "B" being Puccini's La Bohème), it is almost laughable to discover how many disregarded the proper form in which Carmen should be played. Carmen was not a grand opera, despite what Sir Thomas Beecham, Georges Prêtre, Thomas Schippers, and the like wished so ardently to believe. Bizet composed Carmen in the tradition of the opéra-comique, a parallel of the modern musical, with musical sections coupled with spoken melodramas or dialogues. The most superb recorded example of the properly performed Carmen is the Sir Georg Solti recording with Tatiana Troyanos, Plácido Domingo, José van Dam, and Dame Kiri te Kanawa. (Karajan did make a similar recording later in his career, with Agnes Baltsa, José Carreras, van Dam, and Katia Ricciarelli, but his interpretation was regrettably slow and vapid, and the melodramas were spoken (one must wonder why) by actors, rather than the singers.)

In spite of all this, the stars of this recording are superb. Leontyne Price injects a little bit of Bess into her Carmen, which results in a soulful, lyrically beautiful, and dramatically venomous gypsy vamp. Her Habanera ("L'amour est un oiseau rebelle") and Seguidilla ("Près de remparts de Séville") are bewitching. Franco Corelli, who, in 1963, embodied the entire institution of opera with his sultry, sheik-like physique and his hot-blooded, titanic tenor register, is a full-fledged madman as the obsessed Don José. Robert Merrill is a bit too American as the swaggering toreador Escamillo, but his rendition of "Votre toast je peux vous le rendre" is nonetheless suave and debonair. Mirella Freni had not yet reached her silkiest prime in 1963, but she glides through Micaëla's Act III aria ("Je dis que rien ne m'épouvante") like a songbird. (It should be noted that the diction of the four stars is poor, particularly Corelli and Freni; the two of them coupled in Alain Lombard's 1968 recording of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette with similar overall success, hampered only by their abysmal pronunciation.)

The high water mark of this recording is the final track, featuring the opera's cataclysmic finale ("Où vas-tu?"..."Laisse-moi!"). Corelli is so venomously fanatical ("Ainsi, le salut de mon âme"), Price is so inanely noxious and cruel ("Eh bien! Frappe-moi donc, ou laisse-moi passer!"), and the Wiener Philharmoniker is in such tempestuous voice, the following three lines deserve special recognition:

- Don José: "Pour la dernière fois, démon, veux-tu me suivre?"

- Carmen: "Non! Non! Cette bague, autrefois, tu me l'avais donnée. Tiens!"

- Don José: "Eh bien! damnée!"

The above excerpt is literally worth the entire recording; Corelli and Price are unmatched in bravado.

4 out of 5 stars AN ALMOST GREAT CARMEN.......2007-04-13

This Carmen could have been a great one without the role of Don Jose held by Corelli who butchered the french text , which makes me think by the way that unfortunately there is no french opera singers able to deliver an acceptable Opera Comique version ( with the dialogue). (Corelli had also made a mess of the Faust role -with a splendid Ghiaurov-with his
dreadful french accent)..Sorry to say that of deceased great singer but the Carmen libretto is not a text to be only sung but deeply felt which french language does not allow to a singer who does not rehearse enough.
Robert Merrill marvelous dark tone and Mirella Freni, almost a debutante at that time saved the day.

5 out of 5 stars Leontyne Price a Great Carmen.......2007-03-26

Having several Carmen cds, I bought this one on the advice of a great opera expert, Ron Shaheen of San Diego fame. Glad I did. Miss Price is a dramatic on-fire Carmen. Sings with passion and panache. My favorite of all the ones I've heard. Unless you can find one with Milena Kitic singing Carmen, I recommend this version. Corelli, Merrill and Freni, of course, are automatic harbingers of a great cd purchase. All this from an avid opera buffoon. Viva L'Opera!

5 out of 5 stars A Gloriously Sung Carmen.......2006-08-09

One of the sad ironies of opera history is that Bizet never lived to see Carmen become the smash hit of the opera world. Described as the world's first musical, with one hit song after another, the opera is packed with great music and memorable melodies such as the Seguidilla, the Habanera and the Toreador Song. It is one of the first operas set in real time in a real place with ordinary people. Today it is arguably the most popular opera in production.
While there are many wonderful recordings, here it's the voices that make this recording so memorable. Leontyne Price is simply in sumptuous form, with the richness of a mezzo in the lower register plus her ringing top notes. Franco Corelli is a clarion and passionate Don Jose, Mirela Freni a sweet voiced Micaela, and Robert Merrill a rich and robust Escamillo. In some respects this is the "Italian" Carmen, (Corelli and Freni don't have the best French accents and Price was never known for her diction), but the quality of the voices make up for any linguistic deficiency.
As is his wont, Herbert von Karajan emphasizes his orchestra, which becomes almost another member of the cast in his hands--this can sometimes be at the expense of his singers, but Price, Corelli, Freni and Merrill But a von Karajan performance is always thrilling, whether it is this album or his Salzburg Festival DVD with Grace Bumbry, Jon Vickers, Mirela Freni and a very young Justino Diaz.
For a fan of Leontyne Price this is a MUST HAVE, and a worthy addition to any opera collection.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm a little partial..........2006-04-23

I first heard this version of Carmen many years ago, and for two main reasons, I can not give up listening to it. Reason #1: Leontyne Price's voice is so rich and spot-on, and reason #2: the Vienna Boys Choir add the necessary youthful element to the opera. I feel that this is a good, solid recording, well worth the five stars I gave it and far, far better than the versions of Carmen that make me cringe (and which shall remain nameless). The voices were cast well, and as usual, Herbert von Karajan conducts superbly.

4 out of 5 stars relaxing.......2006-04-23

Overall, a good album. I didn't find any of the songs particulary exciting. Some albums have that one song you cannot get enough of? This one doesn't, not for me. That is why not the 5th etoile. I guess you could say the talent was equally divided to all tracks and not to just one song, like other artists tend to do.
A couple songs were different.

Ma libertie contre la tienne - Good song, good yet subtile sound effects, the ending of the song is excellent.

Une femme comme d'autre - Good, but except for the chorus, the song almost sounds like she is making it up as she goes along. Not that it is bad, but it sound just a bit off beat.

Si tu r?ves - If I were to pick a favorite, this would perhaps be it.

The Cd has a really nice cover, the inlay booklet includes the lyrics and photos of Patricia. Lyrics are helpful if you study French language like I do. The singing is slow and relaxed.
I have yet to hear all her releases, so I can't recommend this above all the others, but this one is better than "Dans ma chair", where all the writing talent was spent on two songs.

5 out of 5 stars My introduction to Patricia Kaas!.......2005-03-04

I'm surprised that this is not one of Kaas' most popular albums. After hearing "Une femme comme une autre" on a various artists album, I was immediately hooked on Kaas voice and style of music. My entire french music collection is now based around her albums. I simply can't find another female french artist whom I like so completely!

My personal favorites on this album are:

#4: J'attend de nous: this is a very subtle, yet addicting song. It builds and builds musically, and then Patricia's voice accompanies the increasing tempo. In short, it's a song you'll want to listen to again and again.

#7: La Cle: This is a sort of rock song. I slightly head-bang to this song. The rhythm is more intense than #4, and again, the music itself perfectly accompanies Kaas' voice.

#9: Quand je t'oublie: This is a rather slow song and it took me a few times to like it. I like the end of the song best, when Kaas breaks her usual rhythm and incorporates variations in her voice.

#10: Une femme comme une autre: this is by far my favorite song on the album. Musically, it stays on an even tempo, and any variations are very subtle. This is a song that demonstates very well the power of Kaas' voice. I love the part of the chorus where she sings: "au bord de l'amor, au bord de l'amor," which means "on the verge" or "on the edge of love." Kaas really guides the music, instead of the music guiding her--pure genius!

#11: Les chansons commencement: this is another song that took me awhile to like. There are frequent rises and ebbs in the tempo of the music and in her voice, which frustrated me at first, but now I like it. The end of the song is very good, too; it sounds like chanting, but I'm not sure what it is.

Overall, this is a good album and a good investment to make, if you already like or are interested in french music. And who in their right mind would't? I am honored to be the first one to rate this album. Also check out Julien Clerc, who is an outstanding male french singer! Au revoir! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10

This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16

Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2003-02-22

I should say that in my opinion this cd is great, but that is rather obvious due to the fact that I've given "Le mot de passe" 5 stars.

The songs are fantastic, and Patricia's voice is outstanding... On the whole, this cd is something you thoroughly enjoy, an experience you cannot miss. What is more, if french is not your mother tongue (and that is my case), this cd is also a very useful tool to help you cope with the difficult process of learning a new language. While listening to it, you get accustomed to the way in which words are pronunced, and to the rhythm that characterises that language.

I discovered this cd by sheer luck: I borrowed it from my french teacher, after she recommended it quite strongly to us. I loved it, so I tried to buy it, but was unable to do so in Argentina. I know Patricia Kaas is very famous in France, but she isn't widely known in my country. What to do? I really wanted it, so I decided to order it in Amazon.com...It was quite expensive, but I don't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars could be better, but still excellent.......1999-08-09

I've been trying to get this CD for two months now, unfortunately none of the U.S. stores carries it...it is most unfortunate that great singers like Patricia are drowned by untalented multitude of one hit wonders just because they don't sing on English...so thank god for Brighton Beach where ppl know and love her...i finally got it yesterday, so what could I say: none of her later CDs were able to surpass the very first one: "Mademoiselle Chante" where with each song she weaves magic and every song is perfect, on this CD, however, there were a few songs that I wasn't really thrilled with, although there were more than a few which once again had me enthralled...the major complaint that I have about it is that the music overshadowed her voice instead of complementing it as it did with "Mademoiselle Chante"...this kind of voice should dominate rather than be drowned.

4 out of 5 stars An album of beautiful music, but very different for PK.......1999-06-10

As a Kaas fan in love with her last studio release ("Dans Ma Chair,") it's difficult to judge this disc as a separate entity, but this is an album of beautiful music by an artist of stunning talent. It plays almost like a soundtrack for a magnificent dramatic work - there is a cohesiveness throughout, a dramatic intensity that is rare in contemporary music. Its melodies are more subdued, and perhaps less memorable, than those on "Dans Ma Chair" such as "Les Lignes de nos Mains," "L'Amour Devant La Mer" and "Quand J'ai Peur de Tout." But this is a different style of album than the preceding - there is a more sweeping, orchestral production over compositions that are generally mellower. To draw an analogy to romance, this album is something that builds over time, as contrasted with the "love at first sight (note?)" of "Dans Ma Chair." I think America's celebrated "Divas" are quite fortunate that Patricia Kaas has reportedly put off plans to break into the American market with an English-language disc - they'd be quickly forgotten...*** Discovering Patricia's music is like discovering treasure, or a Howard Roark building in Rand's novel "The Fountainhead," art miles above the blandness - or outright ugliness - of contemporary (American) culture. Another "can't go wrong" disc.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent value.......2000-04-29

The sound quality is excellent. The previous reviewer is overly harsh on the vocal abilities of the performers. Milcheva & Nikolov are very well known and respected artists. Very enjoyable. Laserlight rarely steers you wrong. A fine buy.

2 out of 5 stars sometimes you get what you pay for.......2000-04-15

I wish I could give an enthusiastic endorsement for this recording, especially after hearing the very enjoyable Madama Butterfly also on Laserlight. But it was not to be this time. When Don Jose is outsung by Escamillo, it is time to complain. The title role is regrettably not a success either. The orchestral playing, choral singing and sound quality are at least OK. I think for a few dollars more there are several better choices, not the least of which would be the early Karajan set.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2003-08-03

Although I only had a very basic grasp of the French language, I picked up a few good CDs while in France. Before going there, I'd heard Jeanne Mas and thoroughly enjoy her CD: Le Plus Grands Succes de Jeanne Mas.

However, the more I listen to Patricia Kaas, the more I've realized what an excellent performer she is. Of the three Kaas CDs I have so far, this one is easily the best. It has high energy and strong vocals. The more I listen to this, the more I'd love to see her in concert.

Even if you don't understand French, the beauty of the language and the amazing talent of this artist make this a CD to listen to again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Her best CD! - Get it!.......2003-02-03

I have many of her other albums, but this one is by far the best. It is sensual, vibrant, all the tracks are very good, catchy, with a jazzy, pop beat. A must for music lovers!

3 out of 5 stars Some good songs.......2000-06-29

I own this CD and "Dans ma chair." A friend of mine owns several of her earlier works. So I am very familiar with her music, which has sans doute evolved over her recording career.

This disc really is a Pascal Obispo work. It seems to have his style more than Kaas', which is unfortunate because she has a wonderful style. I'm not saying I don't like Obispo, but something just doesn't work for me here.

"Ma liberté contre la tienne" is good. My favorite is "Les chansons commencent." That song grabs my attention when I listen to the CD. It's a song that makes one grab the CD case to look and see which title it is.

I recommend this for Kaas fans. For the casual listener, or one who is giving French music a listen for the first time, I suggest Kaas' "Dans ma chair." Or if you like French jazz, try "Mademoiselle chante."

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2000-05-12

This is another truly amazing achievement by one of Europe's best singers and performers. I have been blessed in being able to see this wonderful French singer live a couple of times, and the most wonderful show was last year's concert with a full orchestra, introducing this new album. Her voice just soars, and the arrangements are top-notch. If this music will not move you, nothing will! May Patricia never tire of recording such wonderful und unique albums.

      5 out of 5 stars I love it and I don't even know French.......2000-03-19

Some music, like the Cocteau Twins or Bel Canto trancends language such that you can love it without understanding it. This is one such CD. This is the kind of mood setting smooth music you would expect to hear at a chic Hollywood party. It has a kind of timeless style about it.
