Feel free to add French chanteuse Camille to that extremely select group of adventurous female singer/songwriters that also includes Bjork, Fiona Apple, Kate Bush and Julieta Venegas. Camille makes experimental music, to be sure, but her soundscapes have so much warmth in them that they are also instantly catchy. Her singing evokes the wide-eyed innocence of a little girl hopelessly in love with the world and its many mysteries. The instrumentation is sparse on the singer's sophomore effort, sustained by a single tone that accompanies the album from beginning to end. A minimalist at heart, Camille uses overdubs cleverly, adding subtle keyboard effects for the creation of hypnotic atmospheres. The songs merge seamlessly into one another, creating a cinematic journey that requires repeated listening in order to reveal its many hidden treasures. Camille is likely to become a global phenomenon on the sheer strength of her unique talent. --Ernesto LechnerAlbum Details

What's the fuss? .......2007-07-16
I ended up rather disappointed. There is little melody, and a lot of experimentation. I don't wish to discourage experimentation and new ways of thinking about music and sound, but not every experiment needs to be published.
Perhaps I'm ultimately a philistine who can't appreciate art at the extremes, but I've gotten nothing out of listening to this album twice. I guess I've heard lots of different things Camille can do with her voice, including whisper, yell angrily, do scat singing, and more. Nothing that I've heard has sunk in at any emotional level at all; this album seems to be about technique and breaking rules, with no reason to do so except to grab attention.
A liner note points out that "le fil," the thread, of this album is a sustained bourdon note, that is, an organ note at the low end of the scale. This note is present for the entire album, and extends for at least 20 minutes after the end of the last 'song.' If you think that a single note held for 20 minutes or more is worth listening to, then this is a good album for you. I'm left wondering what I'm supposed to get out of the experience of listening to this (I don't need to listen to French CDs to enter a meditative state), and why it isn't insulting to the listener at some level - the artist can just check out for 20 minutes and pretend she's doing something creative.
But I'm certainly open to hearing from others. What am I missing in listening to this?

Customer Reviews:
Apart from flutter and bluster, this is divinely beautiful........2007-05-18
The songs are almost entirely of a very high standard, and show how well Debussy knew the voice. (In my opinion, he particularly knew the virtues of the typical light high French soprano voice, and I can certainly attest that the majority of his songs lie beautifully and very comfortably in the soprano coloratura voice.) Occasionally there's a song that isn't of that typical high standard (the peculiar but very early song "Rondel chinois" comes to mind - it's a lovely thing to sing, but it's not a song of any distinction), but most of these are perfect gems.
The singing on this set varies a little. On the plus side is the ever-beautiful Elly Ameling, who had perhaps the most limpidly beautiful light lyrical soprano voice the world has ever heard; the amazing Frederica von Stade, who sings divinely; Michele Command, whose more robust soprano voice is often stunning; the experienced baritone Gérard Souzay (I have to admit I do not like his voice myself - his timbre and approach are not to my taste - but he is certainly very experienced in this genre and his French is so beautiful to listen to)... and on the not-so-plus side (for me, anyway) is the coloratura soprano of Mady Mesplé. I know there are devoted fans of Ms Mesplé - I must admit I am not one of them. While I admire the glorious ease of her top notes, and the young and attractive sound of the voice's natural timbre, I LOATHE what is to me an unbearable fluttering vibrato that ruins her singing. It sounds extraordinarily under-supported and very uncomfortable - but I also admit that Ms Mesplé clearly has a deep feeling for these mélodies. She certainly knows how to phrase - and certainly the range of her voice is remarkable. If only that twitter could be magicked away... then I'd probably be very satisfied with her singing.
Overall, then, this set is a charming and well-chosen array of almost all of Debussy's vocal output. It is not complete, though. I would recommend supplementing this delightful 3CD set with the recording of Debussy songs by Sandrine Piau, the somewhat bland but extremely pretty recording of Debussy's early songs by Gillian Keith, and the recording of Debussy songs sung by Anne-Marie Rodde (again, so very pretty, and it is one of the few recordings to include Debussy's duet "Chanson espagnole" - which is otherwise represented quite hideously on a recording by a tenor and baritone).
There's also some amazingly beautiful singing of Debussy songs on an album by Christine Oelze (her timbre reminds me so much of Ameling's - just lovely, and what excellent French!).
I have not listened to Dawn Upshaw's recording of Debussy songs, as she is not one of my favourite singers, but given that I've enjoyed her French performances in the past, I do plan to add her recording entitled "Forgotten Songs" to my collection.
And with all of that lot, you, the Debussy collector, will have a truly wonderful collection of Debussy's songs to hand!
good value.......2007-01-07
Very nice sellection of pieces and artists.......2006-05-01
If you like Debussy, you will certainly like this collection. If you are a died in the wool Upshaw fan, Miss Dawn's effort may sould a bit better to you.
I think this one definitely gives you more for the money.
Fabulous compositions, moments of great performing.......2002-08-07
Gerard Souzay seems like he's just going through the motions on all of his tracks; Elly Ameling has fabulous technique as always, but there is something wanting; Mady Mesple gives a great (if not heartfelt) performance. The standout performance on this disc is of the Ariettes Oubliees, as performed by Frederica von Stade. Beautiful, and the emotion is there.
I would recommend it for any singer's library. I do, however, hesitate to give it 5 stars and recommend it to everyone because the emotion just isn't there through many of the tracks--and Debussy without emotion is like bread without yeast--flat.

Pretty, but not memorable.......2006-04-29
Returning to the Recital Hall: A Soiree.......2005-04-09
Here the program is devoted to the works of Claude Debussy, a composer for whom Upshaw has a particular penchant. Her voice is crystal clear, perfectly focused and yet not afraid to animate when the lyrics demand. She covers three cycles here: 'Ariettes oubliees' (for this listener the most successful on the album), 'Racueil Vasnier', and 'Cinq Poemes de Charles Baudelaire' (contrast these with the recently released Susan Graham version and see what interpretation is all about!).
The collaboration between Upshaw and James Levine is sensitive (if not always the pianism of others..). But the entire recital is uplifting and satisfying for the variation in the songs, recorded sound, the generosity of the disc, and most of all for the musical intelligence in which these songs are performed! Grady Harp, April 05
Pretty sound spoiled by a bad vocal habit.......2004-05-07
P.S. Since writing this review (quite some time ago), I was fortunate to hear a recording of Ms. Upshaw in a production at the Metropolitan Opera where she didn't do any of her annoying sliding at all - not once - (probably because it was music from a much earlier time) The difference was astounding. It was a glorious performance. It was hard to believe it was the same person. This, more than ever, confirms my opinion that she ruined this recording with a bad singing habit.
Excellent!.......2003-11-26

This collection, whose French title might be translated "Verdi Vocal Rarities," is a unique contribution to the Verdi centennial year. Its 136 selections on eight compact discs offer an in-depth survey of singers who recorded notable Verdi performances during the era of 78-rpm recording. Coincidentally, this period covers, within a few years, the half- century after the composer's death, in 1901. Some of the singers in the earliest cuts--tenor Francesco Tamagno and bass Victor Maurel, for example--had known Verdi and sung for him. Many of the singers will be familiar to connoisseurs of Verdi discography--Enrico Caruso, Boris Christoff, Fedora Barbieri, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Tito Gobbi, Beniamino Gigli, and Jussi Bjoerling, to name a few. Others, such as Frieda Hempel, Emmy Destinn, Martha Modl, Joseph Schwarz, Gino Cigna, and Mattia Battistini, are names you come across in books about opera, but you have heard their voices only if you spend a lot of time with historic recordings. And a lot of performances, including some of the best, are likely to be the work of singers encountered for the first time. Most of the big moments from Verdi's operas are included--grouped by opera, not by chronological order of recording. There are a few strange omissions; for example, the "Miserere" scene from Il trovatore. But other selections, such as "Ah fors' e lui" and "La donna e mobile," are given in two or three performances--sometimes in French, German, or Russian as well as Italian. Some of the performances are classics; many are mind-boggling.
Some favorite Verdi singers--Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, among them--are absent because they began recording after the collection's cutoff date. Other problems are mostly related to the dates of the original recordings. The sound is all pre-high-fidelity and sometimes quite primitive, though some remarkable work has been done to optimize the earliest items. The annotations are minimal--mostly the date, venue, and performers in each cut, with pictures of the biggest stars. This decision was probably made to keep the price low, and those who already know most of the arias and ensembles will likely find the tradeoff acceptable. --Joe McLellan

Rare but well-polished Verdi gems........2001-10-21
Few would quibble about the quality of what is to be found in this splendid collection of Verdi "introuvables". You will hear how Emmy Destinn portrayed Aida yearning for her homeland in 1908, and how Elisabeth Schwarzkopf portrayed Violetta intereacting with her lover's father in 1953. You will hear several items duplicated. Francesco Navarini, recorded in 1907 with a piano, makes a stunning Fiesco in the "Simon Boccanegra" prologue, as is not up-staged by the more familiar Alexander Kipnis version which follows.
You might regret that your favourite Verdi record is not here. You'll have opportunities to make comparisons, however. I could never believe that anyone could equal Giuseppe de Luca'a 1930 "O sommo Carlo" from "Ernani, but here I have a chance to hear for the first time how the famous baritone Mattia Battistini did it in 1906.
Keith Hardwick compiled and transferred this collection originally in the late 1980s. He has augmented and transferred that issue onto 8 CDs, and provided the annotations. Full recording details are provided, there are many singer photographs but no singer biographies.
The recording dates range from 1903 to 1953. Sadly, almost all the singers - Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf being a notable exception - are all dead by now. Those of us who have opportunities to hear and collect their work, however, can be grateful that the older we get the better it sounds. Indeed, I have never heard any of the items included here in better transfers. Elsewhere I have given this issue a five star rating. Subsequent hearings have made me aware of a technical matter which may bother some listeners. This set has been transferred from the long playing records on which it was originally issued. Their pristine sound quality has been preserved but also some of the ghostly "swish" that accompanied each revolution.

--Ernesto LechnerAlbum Description

C'est excellent.......2007-06-08
Amazing.......2006-08-09
The production is wonderful (and I mean WONDERFUL), something that is rarely heard these days from my point of view. The stereo placement is fantastic as is the dynamics of the vocal cut ups and the rhythmical percussive qualites of her voice.
Camilles voice is really versatile and the use of instruments and sound effects is masterly. The idea of a single tone that runs through the whole album from start to finish, and ties all the tracks together is brilliant....it encourages you to listen to the album as a whole, rather than a series of tracks that aren't related like you find on so many albums these days.
She touches on styles from West Africa (Assise) to human "Beatvox" (Ta Douleur)to beautiful emotional tracks (Pour Que l'Amour Me Quitte) . The fact that everything is sung in French is un-important, it didn't bother me that I couldn't understand all the lyrics, instead it made me focus on the music and voice in an entirely different way.
If you want an album that will really make people sit up and listen, this is the one to buy. It's well worth taking the chance as it is a classic.
Some real talent I found by accident.......2006-01-02
My favorites are:
La Jeune Fille Aux Cheveux Blanc
Ta Douleur
Janine 2
Janine 3
Au Port
If you play Ta douleur Janine 2 Vous Janine 3 and Au Port back to back, I found that they begin virtually with the same constant tone they ended with.
Good sound with good lyrics... Lot's of potential for broad based international appeal for easy listening Pop music lovers.
I speak the language of the string!.......2005-10-24
After I purchased Camille's first album, "Le Sac Des Filles" (The bag of girls, or simply, the purse), I loved it so completely, that I just had to have "Le Fil" (The string or the thread)! One word of caution: if you have no prior knowledge of Camille, I strongly recommend that you buy and listen to "Le Sac Des Filles" (please see my review on this album), for you are not ready for the explosion of surprising and innovative music that this album offers. This album is so completely different from anything you'll ever hear! Camille has reinvented herself from her first album. The sounds of these songs are truly earth-shattering; they will shake you to your innermost core and then make for you a new core! The songs present such a multiplicity of sounds, that your ears won't know what to do with themselves, and your brain will constantly be playing catchup! If you listen to it enough, it "will" raise your IQ. And for all you kids and teenagers who are looking for something different, this is the end of your search! You will listen to nothing better in 2005 and beyond and in the process you will be learning French. What could be better? Here are my specific comments on each of the songs. I've put the songs in order, and the number next to them represents my ranking. The number "1" represents my favorite song on the album and number "15" represents my least favorite (this is not to say that something with a high number is a bad song, but I had to pick). I'm also including the English translation of every song in parenthesis:
10: La Jeune Fille Aux Cheveux Blancs (The Young Girl With White Hair): there is an irresistible combination of sounds in this song. The end, in particular, is great!
2: Ta Douleur (Your Pain): this is one of the coolest pop songs that I've heard in awhile. The music varies in tempo and rhythm. This song is so unique because you can hear Camille spitting, gagging, and other such sounds. As said before, this music is different. On Camille's website, you can see the video to this song. It is so fresh and unique. While she is singing, a blue skein of yarn crochets a dress on her body. It is so cool!
5: Assise (Sat): this song is like music from "The Lion King" on a week's worth of espresso, green tea, chocolate, and cafe au lait, in which the separate entity of caffeine has consumed more of itself. She also clears her throat in the middle of the song. A must listen!
9: Janine I: this is the first "Janine" song, which has a medium speed. The "Janine" songs are not exactly the same as far as the lyrics go (i.e. they have different lyrics), but it is like one song separated into three parts each with different speeds.
6: Vous (You): this song is very good. It has so many different sounds at once, you won't be able to believe it. It also has a few jazzy moments.
4: Baby Carni Bird: this is one of the songs that has English lyrics in it. In fact, the chorus is entirely in English, which should highly interest American listeners. Here are the words of the chorus: "My name is baby carni bird / I'm the only one in the world / I'm yours / For I can fly up in the air / And you can shoot me when you like / I'm yours." This song has very distinctive jazz / cabaret moments. Also, the chorus and the rest of the song do not really go together; they are so entirely different, but still it works! Camille is a genius!
15: Pour Que L'amour Me Quitte (So That The Love Leaves Me): a nice and very pretty song. It is slow and relaxing.
8: Janine II: this is the (excessively) slow part of this song. Lyrically, it is superior!
14: Vertige (Vertigo / Giddiness): this song sounds like constant steady breathing. I like to ride my bike and do other exercises to this song.
13: Senza: this song is fun because it sounds like a doorbell gone haywire!
3: Au Port (With The Port): this song, although not my favorite, is the most satisfying song on the album. It has the constant undertone of a hurried pace, all the while undergoing constant changes in rhythm and tempo. And just when you think it can't get any better, it gives you an ending that goes down like fine wine (or a good soymilk cafe au lait)!
7: Janine III: the is the fast (sometimes very fast) part of this song. It comes and goes like a whirlwind!
1: Pale Septembre (Pale September): my absolute favorite song on this album, and one of my favorite French songs...period. This song also has some English lyrics, which go something like this: "I'll never go to the sun / I'll never know if he's alive / I'll never reach the sun / I'll never, ever know if he's still alive / I'll never reach the sun..." This song is so great because it slyly and insidiously lulls you into several senses of relaxation. Then, when you least expect it, it obliterates quite effectively all the relaxation it built within you with sounds so astounding and surprising and shocking, that it will practically reinvent your soul! It is very hard to explain these sounds, but it reminds me a lot of childbirth. It sounds like the agonizing pain of contractions followed immediately by sounds of deep and intense breathing! It is one very satisfying song! You must listen to this song: you won't be the same!
11: Rue De Menilmontant (Menilmontant Road): a short song with lots of tug-of-war between restraint and letting go.
12: Quand Je Marche (When I Walk): this song concludes the album, with a slightly calming affect, without compromising its overall theme of multiple sounds. Lively, yet relaxing!
I know it's hard when they put French albums on "amazon" and then do not provide clips of these wonderful songs. This can be remedied by going to the French version of "amazon," which is www.amazon.fr. Then click on "musique," type in "Camille" and then you can listen to the clips. However, do not entirely depend on the clips to make your decision. It is not a substitute for buying the album. You will not regret this purchase, trust me!
[...] This is quite a cool website! Once there, you can see videos of many songs. My favorite video is the one for "Ta Douleur." It shows Camille being ravished by a blue skein of yarn that persistently crochets itself onto her body. Also notable are the videos for "Paris" and "Le Sac Des Filles" from her first album. There are also clips of her most recent concert. Look at the clip for the song "Je Suis Une Fille" (I am a girl), in which she burps loudly to her audience. Lastly, you can listen to much more generous clips of all the songs from her first album, "Le Sac Des Filles."
In conclusion, I would like to reemphasize that this album is far superior and entirely different from anything you'll ever hear! It will change the face of music forever! Of course, you must buy and listen (repeatedly) to this album to experience this change! Thus concludes this review! :-)
Incroyable!.......2005-10-03
She is truly incredible. The lyrics are interessting and her voice is very beautiful. If you like jazz or slightly strange music, this album is perfect.
C'est vrai, elle est comme une Bjork Francaise.
Its true, she is like a French Bjork

La Regina.......2005-05-31
Enjoy this tribute to a simple Modenese goddess.
Thank you for the music, Miss Freni.
How beautiful is the female voice? try this!.......2005-05-05
DECCA's "In Celebration" answers these questions unequivocally. This CD answers such questions and leaves the listener in awe - at least it did me - of the beauty, power and subtlety of the female voice.
Second reason to own this CD is the voice itself. Mirella Freni's soprano is round, open and full. Said another way: no nasal lapses from this singer. Her tone is rich and smooth, and her diction is - well, she was born in Modena, Italy. It's a voice that needs no further explanation. Musically and vocally, this 2-CD set is a winner all around.
As readers of these reviews know, it is this reviewer's opinion that a CD has to set and hold a mood and not break that mood once established. It's no joy to have to reach for the "skip" button on the remote when listening to music. That's not to say this collection doesn't have variations or that it's all maudlin - not that there's anyting wrong with being maudlin. By consistent theme I mean it doesn't have unnecessary interruptions in its overall operatic mood. You expect to hear Mirella Freni's voice in some of her most communicative moments, and that's what you get. Lasty, accompaniment is provided by different orchestras at different times in her career, but the different orchestras present no problem. The overall sound quality of this CD set is superb throughout. The transition to digital is balanced and won't necessitate any adjustment in volume in any of the 23 enjoyable and vocally descriptive cuts. I recommend it.
