Disappointment.......2007-04-15

I was excited to see all the fun music so I got suckered into buying it. What a let down! It breaks my heart because it had so much potential. I wish I could find this collection of songs only well done by the original musicians or even a good cover band.

I bought this cd to be played at my 8yr old daughters birthday party. She decided to have a Luau theme. Great music to go with this type of party.

Actually Rather Good..........2005-08-09

I know I am "bucking the trend" but I throw a LUAU party every summer and I use this CD as part of my music collection. Everyone really likes it - some ask me to make a copy of the music for them. The songs are very well done in my opinion (not horrible like some of the others said). The originals are better I am sure, but this is an awesome collection ON ONE CD (if you are not able to burn your own with orignial artists). I was really surprised to see the bad reviews. I think they got ticked because they were EXPECTING the real artists. Now I would have been upset if I had that impression going in, but I already KNEW... took a chance - again, people at my party love it - and for the most part people don't notice it's not the original artists. That's my 2-cents (to balance the scale).

Great Luau Music.......2007-05-15

Drew's Famous Party Music: Authentic Luau Aloha was GREAT. We used it for our luau and everyone loved the music. I highly recommend this CD for your laua.

A complete waste of money.......2004-06-07

I throw a luau party every summer and thought this would be good to have, but it is unbearable. Truly, I don't know what they were thinking with this one - songs from Jamaica and the Bahamas on a Hawaiian Luau disc, and absolutely pathetic songs at that. It really does sound like a small child, playing poorly, on a piece of crap $5 keyboard. For God's sake, get a Makaha Sons cd, or even the "Lilo and Stitch" soundtrack instead.

Just horrible.......2004-04-25

Don't waste your money on this CD. My mother-in-law bought it for me as a gift on return from honeymooning in Hawaii. I wish I had never opened it so that she could return it. It sounds like something Ross from Friends would invent on his Casio keyboard. I've tried to listen to it three times and have never been able to bear listening to the entire CD. Anyone want to buy it?

This album sounds like it was written and performed on a Casio keyboard one afternoon for a dare. I not sure what kind of Party he had in mind when writing it, but it will definately be useful if you need your guests to leave.

The best Hawaiian CD.......2007-02-09

This CD is a "best of" selection from the Vintage Hawaiian Treasures series. It really is the best of Hawaiian folk/pop from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I now have a vast collection of Hawaiian CDs and if I were to be stranded on one of those tiny islands at the end of the chain with one disc, this would be it. A great sounding remastering of the best of the "Hapa Haole" songs -- a blend of Hawaiian and mainland musical traditions and language.

The cover gives you a hint of what you are getting into. It's a happy luau scene, but the more you look at it the stranger it gets. You are looking through the eyes of the photographer and can see his empty place at the table, but your date -- is she angry? All ten characters seem to have a story. The same with the 14 songs, simple and direct but full of interesting stuff. Genoa Keawe's "It's Just an Old Hawaiian Custom" is light, happy and very sad at the same time. John K. Almeida produced most or all of these songs and does some great performances himself. His "Hawaiian War Chant" bridges the old chant tradition with boogie woogie. He covers "On the Beach at Waikiki" with breakneck gusto, a fun song about effective teaching.

Along the side of my copy it says "Souvenir of Hawaii." I can see tourists getting home, expecting some easy listening about a happy luau, and getting surprisingly taken up in the fascinating weird world of this amazing CD. It led me to buy all nine CDs in the series and to get seriously fascinated with Hawaii. But this is still the best.

I bought this cd for my birthday party and then it started to rain. Boy did this CD lighten up my day!

When I left my 30-year home of San Diego with my Midwestern bride a few years ago, I had little idea how much my life had been given form and shape by the beach - just as C. S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity how a fish has no concept of "wet."

Well, Lord knows I've tried, but all these years later and despite my half-hearted best efforts, it's still pretty obvious that, I'm "not from around these parts," as one kind-hearted observer once helpfully pointed out to me.

Small wonder, though. I guess Sherlock's first clue could have been my bleached blonde hair, Pacific Beach Lifeguard T-shirt, well-worn harachi sandals, or maybe even my language sprinkled liberally with "dude", "boss", "gnarly", and the like. I'm thinking, though, that the biggest giveaway was Tim Coffman's latest effort, Beach & Guitar, blazing from my car stereo.

A little history here: Over the past two decades or so, Tim Coffman has earned a well-deserved reputation as the heart and mind of San Diego-based Rolltop Records, bringing out the very best in the numerous artists who he has produced at Rolltop Studio.

However, it wasn't until the 2002 release of Coffman's delightfully retro This is Fun, that the producer/musician had the opportunity to give life to some of his own music. That was followed in 2003 with the internationally-flavored and equally compelling Nonstop to Paris.

This brings us to Beach & Guitar, a collection of original tunes penned by Coffman that virtually shimmer in the hot sun and sand of Southern California and Hawaii. An outstanding effort that is, in Coffman's words, "a product of everything I've ever heard." The album brings together some outstanding musicians familiar to those who know Coffman's earlier work, as well as an ace or two uniquely suited to this specific project.

Most notably, surf guitar ace and legend Paul Johnson (Belairs, Surfaris, Duotones) and the incomparable Hawaiian steel guitarist Greg Sardinna bring instant credibility to Beach & Guitar. In an unexpected and pleasant surprise, making a guest appearance is veteran drummer Dave Raven (Surfaris, Swirling Eddies, ad infinitum).

A track-by-track review follows.

Ode to My VW Bus
Having once owned a '72 VW camper bus, I was immediately drawn to this tune before I even heard it. Upon hearing it for the first of many, many times, I'm convinced this evocative little paean to beach transportation represents everything right about this genre of music. This many years later, I need only to close my eyes when listening to this tune and I'm transported back to "Rails," a favorite haunt close to the San Onofre nuclear power plant in southern California. Warm water and consistently great waves. This is the first of three flat-out Paul Johnson rave-ups here and it sets the tone for much of the first "side" of the album.

Surfer Strut
All the way through this engaging little piece featuring Johnson and Anthony Da Luz (Robert Vaughn and the Shadows) on guitars, I had something else playing in the back of my mind. There's a persistent riff through much of the song that, when complimented by Coffman's background vocals, makes perfect sense to me. Before the tune was over, it came to me: the vibe reminds me of former Eagle guitarist Don Felder's riff in "Heavy Metal."

Paul Johnson makes his third and final appearance on Beach & Guitar in this vintage rave-up deeply reminiscent of The Ventures classic "Walk Don't Run." Dave Raven drives the tempo relentlessly and leaves little room for breathing until the song fades in the stereo. I never believed surf music needed to apologize for anything. This little tune is why. Oh, and by the way, Coffman penned these first three tunes about 10 years ago and shelved them, knowing the time would come when they would be heard. The
