The musical form bhangra was born when young Indian DJs living in Britain layered dance-techno electronics over the infectious, pounding beats of traditional Indian drums (namely tabla and tholl) and instrumentation. Bhangra is rooted in its Indian namesake, a traditional folk dance designed for energetic celebration and often performed at festivals and weddings. Young bhangra stars such as MC Achanak added hip programming to the form and brought it into London's underground dance clubs. Songs most often feature the Punjabi language in ragalike calls, and this may be part of the reason the music has stayed within the limits of the dance subculture of London--though the scene has spread to Canada and the West Coast of the U.S. Bhangra Fever is a wildly vibrant primer featuring the most notable artists of the genre and, with its sacred beginnings, offering hypnotic means to get the body moving. --Karen K.
