While Oliver Mtukudzi--also know as Tuku--has always been revered in his home of Zimbabwe, he has been overshadowed in the American "world music" scene by revolutionary poet Thomas Mapfumo and the pop-party Bhundu Boys. His music is more romantic and bluesy than Mapfumo's, focusing on the grit of life rather than the broader cosmology. He's Ray Charles and Otis Redding to Mapfumo's Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. His voice is gruff but sweet; it implores rather than demands. The music that he creates to carry a song is often light as air, creating a beautiful tension between content and container. Mtukudzi's music has appeared on many compilations over the years, but this is the first full album of Tuku's music to be released in the U.S. It's a gem, with its shimmering guitars; its gentle, insistent bass lines; and a voice that will charm and challenge the listener. --Louis Gibson

A disappointment.......2007-05-18
"The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection" is,in a sense, hearkening back to Putumayo's early days, when they had "Kotoja:The Super Sawale Collection," "The Toure Kunda Collection," "The Dalom Kids and Splash Collection" and "The Johnny Clegg and Juluka Collection" (now, sadly, all are out of print)
I do enjoy the new songs. "Ngoromera" is a powerful plea for peace. "Shanda" is a joyous praise of the musician's art. "Neria" is a song defending the rights of widows, and it's a live version. "Hear me Lord" is also a live track;it's basically a spiritual. Mtukudzi's earthy, world-weary voice drives the song.
This album is perfect for newcomers to Oliver Mtukudzi's Zimbabwe blues, and aficionados of African music.
A good career review.......2006-11-14
LOVELY.......2006-08-01
pretty melodies, but formulaic and repetitive.......2005-10-03
But... his lyrics are supposedly very good, though I suspect most listeners won't be fluent in any of the African languages he sings in. The liner notes do explain the song lyrics in narrative form, not word-for-word (which would probably lose the meaning, anyway).
I guess it depends on what you're looking for... this is worth a couple of spins, but something like one of the Rough Guide's country-by-country anthologies or a more dynamic group like the Sweet Talks or Tinariwen have more enduring value.
Lift Your Spirits with Mtukudzi!.......2005-06-29
A beautiful, happy collection indeed.

On this album, his third released in the West by Putumayo, the gruff-voiced Zimbabwean singer-composer Oliver Mtukudzi and his band have lovingly fashioned another collection of hymnlike, honeyed harmonies and catchy percussive grooves. The ambiance is unaffected, wide open, and sunny with precious little obvious tweaking, as though the musicians were recorded at a live gig or captured playing for their own pleasure during a sound check. Mtukudzi's bell-like guitar leaps through the mix, rippling with iridescence like a silver fish in a noonday stream. His mature output continues to display a close kinship with other southern African traditions, especially mbaquanga, but the rhythms seem relaxed and stress-free when compared to the syncopated slap and sucking undertow that characterizes most Zulu-derived pop styles. However, the third track, "Ziva Nguva," cancels out previous impressions with an aggressive minor-key hook and relentless call-and-response vocals. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Every song on this album is a hit.Oliver Mtukudzi has a voice that draws you in;if he weren't from Zimbabwe, you'd think he was a blues singer from the Mississippi. For those who enjoy African music, this album is a MUST!

Zimbabwe Blues.......2006-06-17
This CD is filled with powerful songs. It's great to be able to read the lyrics if you're interested. The music is still enchanting&bluesy without knowing what the words are.
Oliver Mtukudzi's singing is earthy, rough, yet comforting. His backup singers are almost a gospel choir.I'm not a big fan of the blues, yet if this counts as blues music, then I'm a fan. This album is PERFECT.I can't name a single track worth skipping."Tuku Music" is a wonderful intro to Oliver Mtukudzi's spectacular music.

The First Taste of Tuku!.......2004-10-22
This is not my favorite CD of his, but it is up there on my list of favorites. The songs deal with such issues as responsibility, AIDS, and with human nature. Oliver sings about universal themes of manhood--the things that unite and separate us. The dance numbers were popular at world music dance joints and clubs a few years back. They still make you wanna shake your booty. Pure fun!

Singer/guitarist/activist Oliver Mtukudzi has cut a broad swath through his native Zimbabwe. He has recorded countless records and become the country's biggest star, but his work is less known on this side of the pond. Here on Nhava (which is the Zimbabwean word for "carrying bag"), Mtukudzi offers bag of tunes overflowing with sunny African melodies and lyrics with messages of encouragement and advice. The words are married to a unique style called "Tuku music" (Tuku is his nickname), where Mtukudzi draws upon traditional forms of mbira, modern jiti and South African mbanqanga. In layman's terms, it means Mtukudzi's deep voice, a strong chorus of background vocals, and highly danceable interlocking rhythms of African drums and electric guitars. Highlights include the chiming "Ninipa" and the hypnotic "Pindirai." Regardless of whether Mtukudzi has heard the dance floor mantra, "Free your mind and you feet will follow," he's practicing it here on Nhava. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Classic Mtukudzi.......2006-08-17
I like ALL songs on the album, but my particular favourites are Izere Mhepo, Handiro Dambudziko, Dzokai and Tozeza (which I believe is a remake of his earlier song "Baba" from the album "Shoko"?).
If you're looking to sample some music from this great African artist or add another album to your collection, this is a definite must have. You'll enjoy your purchase through and through.
WOW Oliver.......2006-08-01

I saw him perform at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland OR, USA. People were dancing even though the large outdoor space was quite crowded!
On "Nhava" my favorite tracks are #1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12.
