Tuku Music

Editorial Reviews

While Oliver Mtukudzi--also know as Tuku--has always been revered in his home of Zimbabwe, he has been overshadowed in the American "world music" scene by revolutionary poet Thomas Mapfumo and the pop-party Bhundu Boys. His music is more romantic and bluesy than Mapfumo's, focusing on the grit of life rather than the broader cosmology. He's Ray Charles and Otis Redding to Mapfumo's Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. His voice is gruff but sweet; it implores rather than demands. The music that he creates to carry a song is often light as air, creating a beautiful tension between content and container. Mtukudzi's music has appeared on many compilations over the years, but this is the first full album of Tuku's music to be released in the U.S. It's a gem, with its shimmering guitars; its gentle, insistent bass lines; and a voice that will charm and challenge the listener. --Louis Gibson

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-05-18

As a fan of Oliver Mtukudzi, I assumed this collection would have a wealth of new material. With the exceptions of tracks 2,7,9 and 10,I ALREADY have these songs,on "Tuku Music," "Paivepo", "Vhunze Moto" and "African Odyssey." "The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection" is mostly a compilation of songs from CDs now sadly discontinued.

"The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection" is,in a sense, hearkening back to Putumayo's early days, when they had "Kotoja:The Super Sawale Collection," "The Toure Kunda Collection," "The Dalom Kids and Splash Collection" and "The Johnny Clegg and Juluka Collection" (now, sadly, all are out of print)

I do enjoy the new songs. "Ngoromera" is a powerful plea for peace. "Shanda" is a joyous praise of the musician's art. "Neria" is a song defending the rights of widows, and it's a live version. "Hear me Lord" is also a live track;it's basically a spiritual. Mtukudzi's earthy, world-weary voice drives the song.

This album is perfect for newcomers to Oliver Mtukudzi's Zimbabwe blues, and aficionados of African music.

3 out of 5 stars A good career review.......2006-11-14

I bought this album after seeing Tuku live in Washington and while it doesn't generally have the drive and life of his live gigs it is a good review of his work. Good to create that mood of Africa and contains great Zimbabwean style guitar work. If you enjoy African music you'll enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars LOVELY.......2006-08-01

By far one of my favorite CDs. Very upbeat, thought provoking CD. Keep it up Oliver, makagona apa mukoma.

3 out of 5 stars pretty melodies, but formulaic and repetitive.......2005-10-03

While one of Oliver Mtukudzi's tunes would fit in beautifully on an African mix CD, this collection doesn't show a lot of range musically. Basically, every tune is a four bar verse progression followed by a four bar chorus progression, with the same melodic riffs repeated over and over again. They're nice riffs, but it's hard to tell one tune from the next.

But... his lyrics are supposedly very good, though I suspect most listeners won't be fluent in any of the African languages he sings in. The liner notes do explain the song lyrics in narrative form, not word-for-word (which would probably lose the meaning, anyway).

I guess it depends on what you're looking for... this is worth a couple of spins, but something like one of the Rough Guide's country-by-country anthologies or a more dynamic group like the Sweet Talks or Tinariwen have more enduring value.

5 out of 5 stars Lift Your Spirits with Mtukudzi!.......2005-06-29

This album contains joyful music that will have you toe tapping and humming along. Even after countless playtime in my car and at home the songs still sound fresh from the upbeat and optimistic soul of his music; plus his respect for family and fellow humans comes through in the lyrics. Its a shame that artists like Mtukudzi do not get more exposure in a crowded space of trashy music.

A beautiful, happy collection indeed.

On this album, his third released in the West by Putumayo, the gruff-voiced Zimbabwean singer-composer Oliver Mtukudzi and his band have lovingly fashioned another collection of hymnlike, honeyed harmonies and catchy percussive grooves. The ambiance is unaffected, wide open, and sunny with precious little obvious tweaking, as though the musicians were recorded at a live gig or captured playing for their own pleasure during a sound check. Mtukudzi's bell-like guitar leaps through the mix, rippling with iridescence like a silver fish in a noonday stream. His mature output continues to display a close kinship with other southern African traditions, especially mbaquanga, but the rhythms seem relaxed and stress-free when compared to the syncopated slap and sucking undertow that characterizes most Zulu-derived pop styles. However, the third track, "Ziva Nguva," cancels out previous impressions with an aggressive minor-key hook and relentless call-and-response vocals. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Mtukudzi goes for smoother sound.......2006-09-10

I've been a fan of Oliver Mtukudzi since his album "Tuku Music" came out 7 years ago.In "Vhunze Moto" he is still going strong. The songs on this album could count as adult contemporary, but at times they are like spirituals, gospel&the blues."Moto Moto" is powerful--and it fits, since the song is about fire. The third song "Ziva Nguva" has urgency-it is about time itself;it's also in a minor key, making it unique. The last song "Tapera" is a spiritual-like lament, and Mtukudzi has the strong dynamism of a preacher. One can imagine a congregation shouting "Amen, brother!" in a response.

Every song on this album is a hit.Oliver Mtukudzi has a voice that draws you in;if he weren't from Zimbabwe, you'd think he was a blues singer from the Mississippi. For those who enjoy African music, this album is a MUST!

5 out of 5 stars This has become one of my favorite albums.......2004-12-05

This music is awesome. The songs are addictive. They are upbeat, happy, but soulfelt at the same time. The sound is very authentic- pure and natural. The singer/songwriter sounds like has has had a deep, rich life and came out on top.

5 out of 5 stars Oliver's Best!.......2004-10-22

This collection of songs from Mr.Mtukudzi, the pre-eminent singer and musician from Zimbabwe, is solid gold. I don't own all of his CD's, but here, Mtukutdzi and his band combine to make a perfect combination of musical harmony. "Wongororo" is the perfect dance number to shake your thing to at a club or at home. Oliver has been doing this for 20+ years, and his craftsmanship is at it's peek here.

5 out of 5 stars Vhunze Moto.......2003-12-21

I love Tuku and his music, I have loved every single one of his CDs. Each time he records new music I think this is it, nothing could possibly beat this... This CD is so inspirational and full of wisdom, it makes you stop and think. I keep playing it over and over again and I cannot get enough. I hope you enjoy it too. I can hardly wait for Oliver's new music. Way to go homeboy!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars More Tuku excellence.......2003-05-08

I must admit it took me a while to get into this album, but after a year of listening, I like it better than ever. The songs this time out are more melancholic and moody, with a greater acoustic feel than his previous, no less brilliant outings, Tuku Music/Paivepo. Kucheneka is my favorite, with it's wild percussion and impassioned vocals. I wish you'd do more songs in this mold, Tuku. Nevertheless, it's all killer no filler here. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Zimbabwe Blues.......2006-06-17

In my college days,I had an acquaintance from New Orleans who prided himself on his vast Otis Redding collection. In the meantime,I discovered Oliver Mtukudzi,Zimbabwe's Otis Redding.Bonnie Raitt rightly equates liking him with liking chocolate in her intro to this CD--people don't know exactly why.

This CD is filled with powerful songs. It's great to be able to read the lyrics if you're interested. The music is still enchanting&bluesy without knowing what the words are.

Oliver Mtukudzi's singing is earthy, rough, yet comforting. His backup singers are almost a gospel choir.I'm not a big fan of the blues, yet if this counts as blues music, then I'm a fan. This album is PERFECT.I can't name a single track worth skipping."Tuku Music" is a wonderful intro to Oliver Mtukudzi's spectacular music.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2005-08-30

This album was so powerful that I went out and purchased everything I could of "Tuku Music" and just loved it. The translated words of all of Mtukudzi's songs are so powerful and so beautiful. It is "message music" with a bluesy theme. Mtukudzi's gruff voice is in the tradition of great blues singers from John Lee Hooker to Leadbelly. There are few records that you can listen to from beginning to end without getting tired. Here's one that you'll do that with, time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to Africa.......2005-06-18

This CD has a calming effect on me whenever I hear it. I feel like I am sitting in Zimbabwe drinking whawha. One or two songs do get a bit repetitive... but on the whole its great. I wish I could understand the lyrics, because apparantly his songs focus on social and economic issues.

    3 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2005-05-16

Having heard a promising sample of Mtukudzi's music, and having read the laudatory introduction by Bonnie Rait, I had high hopes for this album. But sadly, I was disappointed. Oliver's voice is nice, but the songs don't really seem to go anywhere. I listened to it, always thinking to myself, "This next song will blow me away," but it just never came. I'm sorry to say that this album is repetitive and rather boring.

4 out of 5 stars The First Taste of Tuku!.......2004-10-22

This was the first time I've ever tasted the music of Oliver's, and I couldn't believe I have never heard of him before them.
This is not my favorite CD of his, but it is up there on my list of favorites. The songs deal with such issues as responsibility, AIDS, and with human nature. Oliver sings about universal themes of manhood--the things that unite and separate us. The dance numbers were popular at world music dance joints and clubs a few years back. They still make you wanna shake your booty. Pure fun!

Singer/guitarist/activist Oliver Mtukudzi has cut a broad swath through his native Zimbabwe. He has recorded countless records and become the country's biggest star, but his work is less known on this side of the pond. Here on Nhava (which is the Zimbabwean word for "carrying bag"), Mtukudzi offers bag of tunes overflowing with sunny African melodies and lyrics with messages of encouragement and advice. The words are married to a unique style called "Tuku music" (Tuku is his nickname), where Mtukudzi draws upon traditional forms of mbira, modern jiti and South African mbanqanga. In layman's terms, it means Mtukudzi's deep voice, a strong chorus of background vocals, and highly danceable interlocking rhythms of African drums and electric guitars. Highlights include the chiming "Ninipa" and the hypnotic "Pindirai." Regardless of whether Mtukudzi has heard the dance floor mantra, "Free your mind and you feet will follow," he's practicing it here on Nhava. --Tad Hendrickson

This is really a great album and artist and group. I agree...you don't get tired of his music; it just keeps getting better. Great spirit, rhythm, music. It feeds my heart and is great music to walk to! Tuku music takes me at least 2 listens to get into, and then I love it for good!

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Mtukudzi.......2006-08-17

I think this is one of Oliver Mtukudzi's best albums, if not THE best. From the first song (Ninipa) to the last (Dzidziso), you will not want the sound to stop.

I like ALL songs on the album, but my particular favourites are Izere Mhepo, Handiro Dambudziko, Dzokai and Tozeza (which I believe is a remake of his earlier song "Baba" from the album "Shoko"?).

If you're looking to sample some music from this great African artist or add another album to your collection, this is a definite must have. You'll enjoy your purchase through and through.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW Oliver.......2006-08-01

This is wonderful CD. There is an ever deeper appreciation for this music when you fully understand the Shona language and get word for word what he is saying especially in the deep groaning of the number 2 track where he pours out his heart weeping over his children who have gone overseas in search of a better life and the longing of those left behind in the empty nest. Powerful and truely a heartfelt condition of the people that can relate to that song.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-11-25

This is my fourth CD by Oliver M. and I recommend all of them. The others I have by him are: Vhunze Moto, Paivepo, and the Oliver M. Collection. Much of his work is published by Putumayo.

I saw him perform at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland OR, USA. People were dancing even though the large outdoor space was quite crowded!

    On "Nhava" my favorite tracks are #1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 12.

    4 out of 5 stars the best.......2005-11-10

4 out of 5 stars Tuku music appeals to even a rock an roller like me.......2000-09-26

This is my forth CD by Oliver Mutukudzi and in the liner notes it lists a discography. Looks like he has 28 albums I don't have and I can't find them. If anyone knows let me know. Hear Me Lord is a one of my favorite tunes and was the lead song for the Womad-USA Grand Jam in '99. Like it says on the album Mbira + Mbaqanga = Tuke Beat. Dance on . . .

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and lively, this music is infectious........2000-07-13

I have been a fan of Oliver Mtukudzi since I found his first album to be released in the US, Tuku Music. I bought Ziwere Mukobenhavn blindly and was rewarded greatly. The same infectious rhythm that captivated me when I first heard Tuku was also there in this CD. His voice and the band are perfectly blended and filled with genuine feeling. Another great CD by Tuku!
