Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Music to captivate your heart........2005-04-08

I purchased the CD after having listened to selections on isabelleboulay.com, Le Site Officiel. All too often I purchase music CD's without having heard them on the radio or in music videos. I was really captivated by the selection from the CD "Tout un Jour" from the artist's website. Yes, my selection of this CD was based on the song, "Tout au bout de nos pienes" [en duo avec Johnny Halliday], together with the fact that I already had two of this chanteuse's CDs. You should be aware that I often will purchase a CD just for one song. However, I really like many of the selections on this disk, including "Un autre vie," "Ici," "Tout un jour," "Je voudrais," and "Au vous."

I must again compliment the arranger and the keyboardist for this CD. The arrangements and the work of the piano player make this disk as much as the voice of the singer. This is good music for listening. It creates the mood. The music speaks for itself. Yes, it even speaks to an Anglophone from Pennsylvania.

I would encourage those who want to preview the music to listen to the music on the official website. You will find an excellent selection of music selected from various disks. The idea is that you listen, get to like the music, and buy it. Yes, buy this music. I did, and I like it.

If you like this disk, you will love Isabelle Boulay's other CDs, "Scènes d'amour," and "Au moment d'être à vous."

5 out of 5 stars She's the Real Deal!.......2004-08-05

Even under the risk of this sounding like an overstatement , I have no problem saying that Isabelle Boulay is the best Francophone singer today. Yes, even better than Patricia Kaas...Isabelle has a heart and soul that floods her music like a wave! Like many of the best Francophone singers today, Isabelle is a proud daughter of Quebec. But it is Quebec that should be proud of her! This phenomenon of a singer made it big time in France, where she will be touring for two months. And that includes a full week of shows at the famous Olympia, in Paris. This CD in particular, finds a solid, mature performer at the peak of her career. If you like traditional French ballads, you'll go crazy with "Tout un jour"...tous les jours, if you know what I mean...

5 out of 5 stars La Piaf de 2004.......2004-06-28

Edith Piaf was great...Isabelle is amazing!
Do yourselves a favor and give her a listen!
You won`t be disappointed, I assure you.
Great songs, great music and amazing vocals!
Isabelle Boulay...The next superstar!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait...........2004-06-08

It seems as though we have been waiting forever for Isabelle's new cd, but now having listened to it over and over again, I must admit it was well worth the wait. This new cd is not only incredible, but really showcases Isabelle's talent and her growth and maturity as a singer.
My favorite songs include, "celui qui dort avec moi," "tout un jour," "j'irais jusqu'au bout," and "jamais." Each song has something special, something unique, something so distinctly Isabelle.
It seems as though she just keeps getting better and better. I thought "Au moment d'etre au vous" was impossible to beat, but I was wrong. "Tout un jour" captures something magical, something beautiful.
Buy it! You'll love it!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A nice overview of Caruso's legacy.......2007-01-04

Enrico Caruso was one of the first "media stars," with his recordings selling widely in the early twentieth century; he helped popularize the recording industry. He was one of the leading tenors of his day, and is regarded as one of the tops of the twentieth century (although he began serious singing in the late 19th century).

This CD features some of his "greatest hits," among which are his well reputed version of "Vesti la giubba" (from I Pagliacci, one of his signature operas); arias from Verdi's Rigoletto, including the bold "Questa o quella" and "La donna e mobile"; some of his most popular recordings from Puccini, including "E lucevan le stelle," "Recondita armonia," and "Che gelida manina." Nice additions to the CD are wonderful ensemble pieces, such as the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor (including the voice of Luisa Tetrazzini) and the quartet from Rigoletto (with Amelita Galli-Curci).

Interesting tidbits include his first recording, from 1902, and his last, from 1920.

All in all, this is a very nice representation of his work. I'm not sure that it compares with the old LP (with him in clown outfit) that includes Rossini's nearly unsingable "La danza," among other items. But it is a terrific introduction to the art of Caruso. Anyone who has not listened to this tenor's works before would be well advised to use this as their entree to his oeuvre.

    5 out of 5 stars Unearthly.......2002-12-23

Forget toiling for a BMW, enjoy finer things in life. One of my personal favorites is ''Le pecheurs de perles'', but the offer is overwhelming.

4 out of 5 stars If You Only Buy One Caruso . . ........2001-01-03

let this be it! Wonderful, generous selection of his singles for Victor, most of them solos, but a few duets, quartets, quintets, and a sextet. The accompanying booklet makes a great deal of including his first and last recordings, but by far the most important here is Caruso's 1907 recording of Vesti la giubba, the first classical recording to sell over a million copies in the United States. If you listen to it, you'll know why--it's every bit as melodramatic as the minstrel show singles with which it shared the top of the early twentieth-century charts.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of enjoyable rarities.......2005-08-13

Before I get verbose here I'll start with this: the superb performance of the cantata "The Greek Revolution" in this set alone is worth the price of the entire set. This is very early Berlioz but it contains some astonishing things, including a big ending "The Summit of Olympus"--a classic snowballing "call-to-arms" that would make anyone want to go out and battle the Turk--that consistently avoids the trite and obvious and contains ideas about generating excitement a modern rut-ridden choral composer like Philip Glass should pay close attention to. Fornet's recording of this on Denon is also nice and brings out the detail better, and is very powerful, but ultimately isn't as viscerally rousing. Savvy conductors know that even youthful Berlioz contains great stuff.

    Anyway:

It's a bit sad that Berlioz is known to many listeners only through a handful of works like the Symphonie Fantastique (his most famous, yet an early work), maybe the Requiem and Harold in Italy, and a few other items (the short list seems to vary from person to person but it's always short). Sad, because unlike some other composers who are one or two trick ponys, Berlioz was a continuously strong and imaginative composer, in fact he was a great composer, up there with the best of them, who let loose with a long string of masterpieces that still need attention--like his opera Benvenuto Cellini and twenty other things. The man, even when trying to write boring music, was incapable of writing boring music. Then there's his incredible writing: his autobiography, his criticisms, his satires. He's not only one of my very favorite composers but one of my very favorite writers too. There's no other composer I can say that about.

So what's up with him, and why should you pay attention to this pricey collection of unknowns? Jacques Barzun, another favorite writer and an authority on Berlioz, thinks the Frenchman was so advanced in his ideas that he's been thoroughly misunderstood and grotesquely underappreciated up until fairly recently. Even Donald Francis Tovey, an insightful musical commentator (and another favorite writer--his books are highly recommended) of over 100 years ago talks of Berlioz as if, at times, he didn't known exactly what he was doing. There's an awful comment by him about how Berlioz allegedly knew how to start and end a piece but got a bit lost in between. How untrue. Barzun, on the other hand, mentions an incident where some critic complains about a series of wrong (meaning incompetently judged and not conforming to theory of that time) chords used in Harold in Italy and the response by a sharp conductor was "So tell me then why they sound so right?" (Someone later did a proper modern analysis and found the chord use was subtle and brilliant) Barzun's point, in a wonderful essay "Berlioz after a Hundred Years" (In "Critical Questions")is that we have yet to totally figure out why so much of his music sounds right. I'd also add that we are only just maybe starting to learn how to make it sound right. Berlioz was smart, possibly smarter than any of us and it's taking us 200 years to catch up with him.

[My guess at one explanation of his greatness was his total mastery of the very poetic French language and his ability to translate that into a sort of music. His melodies often sound like someone speaking. Elliot Carter is another great composer who is intensely literate and a fine writer... and a great composer perhaps for similar reasons.]

I'll go even further, after 30 years of listening to his music I'm convinced he stands at the top platform with the handful of all-time great composers. Berlioz transformed Western art music--single-handedly--into a supple, breathing, colorful, and living thing, and in a way that few composers have managed since. Moving from the Masters (Bach through Beethoven) to Berlioz is like moving from great oil painting to motion pictures in Technicolor and that's about the best way I can describe the phenomenon (Barzun notes his unique multidimensionality). Listen to Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and then listen to Benvenuto Cellini. The music, over 150 years old and only about 50 years older than Mozart's sounds totally modern, and often modern like a modern that hasn't even happened yet. Listen to Schumann's "Faust" (and I dearly love Schumann) and listen to Berlioz's and be shocked. The Schumann version sounds like flat soda in comparison. The only other composer I've encountered whose music has this same visceral "aliveness" (at times) is Shostakovich. Oddly, Berlioz can make even the mighty Strauss sound wooden and fussy (some would say Germanic).

The argument then is one shouldn't avoid anything by Berlioz and one should shop around to find recordings by conductors who understand his music (Gad! Solti doing Faust is stunning)and orchestras who can handle the twists, turns and other race car demands of the scores. This collection of choral works, many rare, many early (keeping in mind the ever-popular Fantastique is early too), is excellent with the only drawback being that a few, lovely as they are, don't showcase his best compositional assets. He was, regardless, a striking choral composer as Colin Davis noted during the recording sesssions for "Cellini." Personally, I never cared much for choral music or even opera until I forced myself to listen to the non-orchestral Berlioz. Well, at least I like HIS stuff in these genres! Everything about this disc is first-rate: performances, conducting (Plasson is an excellent Berlioz conductor) and sound. The only complaint is the cover art is awful. It looks like someone at EMI wanted to save a few bucks so they hired a vaguely talented teenage niece or something to handle it.

Finally, unlike most collections of rarities and odds and ends by composers--even the best of them--this is a set of discs I drag out, play, and enjoy regularly.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13

The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

Roberto Alagna is without peer among contemporary tenors in the French repertory, as this excellent collection of staples, sprinkled with rarities, demonstrates. He has the right blend of sweetness for the lyric selections and exciting vocal heft for those requiring more muscle. If one must find something to carp at, it's the tenor's occasional tendency to slip into an inappropriate Italianate verismo style. Examples of the "sweet" Alagna are his gorgeous floating soft ending to "Je crois entendre encore," from Bizet's The Pearlfishers, and the lovely head voice in the Lalo aria. His "Rachel, quand du Seigneur," a favorite of tenors from Caruso to Richard Tucker, is taken at a sluggish tempo, but it has the requisite vocal finish and characterization. And Alagna creates the necessary sense of wonder in the opening of "Pays merveilleux," from Meyerbeer's L'Africaine. The Bruneau selection that closes the disc is a welcome rescue of a lovely farewell-to-life aria from a long-forgotten late-Romantic opera. Unlike most collections done with a generalized, one-size-fits-all approach, Alagna's finds him almost always in character. Bertrand De Billy's accompaniments are sometimes too restrained (the orchestral introduction to the Bizet aria is downright sleepy), but that shouldn't keep admirers of French opera and world-class singing from grabbing this disc. --Dan Davis

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great French aria recital!!!.......2003-02-13

Roberto Alagna has the makings of a great French tenor. He has the style and diction down pat. This CD shows off his tenor to great effect. I especially liked the rare selections that were included. There is some wonderful French music on this disc.

Alagna is given great support by conductor Bertrand de Billy and the Royal Opera House Orchestra of Covent Garden. The sound is excellent. This disc was finely produced. On to the review.

Alagna's voice has a scratchy edge to it that gives character to his otherwise rough timbre. His voice is not ugly, but it is not the typical sweet voice of a French tenor. His voice grows on you. His voice also has some dramatic heft to it. He is best in the arias that require some dramatic heft, but not a whole lot. He is totally committed dramatically to the music that he sings. The aria from "Joseph" and the one from "Le Cid" are two great examples. He sings the famous aria from "La Juive" very well. However, on some of the arias, he tends to use too much unnecessary drama. The editorial reviewer was correct in saying that Alagna has a tendency to slip into inappropriate Italian verismo style. Alagna's rendition of the aria from "Samson et Dalila" is not that good. That aria is probably too heavy for his voice. The timbre of his voice takes on an unattractive edge when he sings that aria. Alagna sings the delightful Sérénade from "L'Amant Jaloux" very well with lovely pianissimos. However, it seems that he is a bit rough in his delivery of some of the words. By rough delivery, I mean the use of too much emotion. This charming piece is probably not suited to a relatively heavy voice like his. Also, the exquisite aria from "Le Roi d'Ys" suffers from rough delivery of some of the words. I also wish he had sung the word "vais" in the phrase "Je vais, hélas, mourir!" pianissimo like Nicolai Gedda does on his version of the aria. Alagna's rendition of the beautiful aria from "The Pearl Fishers" is excellent. His pianissimos are to die for! One previous reviewer said that his pianissimos sounded mechanically produced and that some were even unpleasant to the ears. Do not believe that person. Alagna has gorgeous pianissimos that are very naturally produced.

Overall, this is a great recital album that includes some very rare material. It is worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars The first great French tenor of the 21st century!.......2001-06-23

Roberto Alagna is probably the greatest tenor to come from France since Georges Thill, widely considered to have been the greatest French tenor of the 20th century. This is unquestionably Alagna's best solo album, the equal of his astonishing work in Werther. All of his virtues are amply displayed here: a splendid voice, directness and honesty of expression, superb diction in his native French, intelligence, imagination, complete and utter immersion in character, and the ability to make each word he sings mean something. Throughout the disc we hear nobility and sweetness, elegance and passion, tenderness and pain, even charm and humor. This is not merely a 'stud', but a great artist in the service of music.

Most important of all is Alagna's questing spirit. While some superstar singers barely change or add to their repertory over decades of performing, Alagna is eager to mine the rich lode of French repertory (of which we only know a few nuggets) and bring otherwise unknown or forgotten works to a new public. Some of these arias haven't been recorded in at least 60 and even almost 80 years. In fact, so rarely performed are they that the ROH Orchestra had to borrow the orchestral parts for two arias from the Orchestre de Paris!

Since his career began Alagna's voice has grown in drama and power with little loss to the basic lyric quality of his instrument. He does so well with the more dramatic selections not only because of his great skill as a vocal actor, but also because he actually sings the arias beautifully and lyrically instead of just belting them. He is strongest when he can combine heroism with introspection, as in the arias from `Samson et Dalila', `Le Cid', and especially `La Juive', where he perfectly embodies the inner conflicts of these three very different religious men. Indeed I found the grief and guilt of a father about to lose his daughter in the last absolutely heartwrenching. Still, I hope Alagna waits a long time before doing any of these roles on stage, and limits his appearances in them to small theatres. The best track on the disc is `O Paradis', filled with the genuine wonder of discovery. In the aria from `Joseph', Alagna convinces in the widest range of emotions from nostalgia to rage to the desperate desire for reconciliation, and the aria from `Les Abencerages' is also a dramatic tour-de-force. There is also a truly heroic rendition of `Nature immense' from `La Damnation de Faust'. The glorious paean to friendship from `Iphigenie en Tauride' is both urgent and sensitive, and the farewell to life from `L'Attaque du Moulin' is sung even more beautifully than by some historic tenors.

He also shows that he is quite capable of the light touch, such as in the aria from `Le Roi d'Ys' and especially `Elle ne croyait pas' with its beautiful diminuendi. The aria from `Maitre Pathelin' which opens the disc is a sweet, lovely serenade capped by a splendid high C#. It's a pity that he does not take all of `Je crois entendre encore' as sweetly and headily as he takes certain phrases, but I admit to being extraordinarily picky about the performance of this aria and am only truly satisfied by Gedda.

As with his performances at the Met and elsewhere, Bertrand de Billy proves his skill in bringing out the spirit and elegance of French opera. If his tempi are a trifle slow (and nowhere near as much as those of, say, Michel Plasson) they only aid musical expression. He has been a long time friend and collaborator of Alagna, and their rapport shows here. The orchestra plays very well and London Voices makes a fine choral contribution to the `Samson et Dalila' scene.

If there is any complaint to be made, it is that while Alagna differentiates character superbly, he doesn't differentiate actual musical style much. Over 100 years separate the Gretry and Bruneau arias, and he sings them basically the same way. And there are a few moments where he overdoes the heroism (and volume) a bit, notably in `Anges du paradis' and the Gretry aria. Still, in the context of the disc's overall splendor, these are minor flaws. It's also a shame that the originally announced aria from `Herodiade' is not included. I presume it didn't fit onto the otherwise generously filled (73 minute) disc.

By and large the documentation is also very good. Admirers of French opera who have only heard the rarities on historical labels with minimal documentation will greatly appreciate the full texts and translations included here. There is a nice essay on the French tenor tradition 'which Roberto Alagna inherits' written by noted English critic John Steane, who also provided explanatory notes for each track (some for the rarities could have been slightly more detailed). Although I am glad that Alagna isn't subjected here to the sugary publicity gush that most singers these days get in their CD booklets (so much for him being 'overhyped'!), it's a pity that there is no biographical or career information about him or de Billy.

I really hope that Alagna gets his wish to have some of these and other rare operas recorded in their entirety and staged, but I doubt if the political and economic situation in the opera world will permit it. Even if performances or complete recordings are impossible, Alagna absolutely must record many more solo French albums. A Berlioz disc with both Enee's and Hylas' arias from Les Troyens is essential. Certainly this wonderful stage comedian should also record more comic repertory. And of course, he should continue to bring us many more recordings of arias that haven't been recorded in ages, and even some world premieres. I also seriously hope that he gives us his interpretations of French song repertory as well. Frankly, if he wants to record the Paris phone book, that's fine with me too!

      5 out of 5 stars A truly great recording.......2001-06-10

This album is among the best I ever heard. Alagna's beautiful tenor tone is truly amazing throughout the CD and his perfect French diction is very enjoyable. After listening mr. Alagna's French I prefer him to anyone else I've heard singing this repertoire. IMO the loveliest songs are "Je pense à vous" with the easy high C# and the light "Vainement, ma bien-aimée". I think the arias from Le Cid and Samson are a bit too heavy for him, but however, he sings them with the great interpretative power. It's possible that he uses a little too much pianissimo in the Bizet aria, but on the other hand that's where I think his voice is at its best. Nothing can take the fifth star away! This CD will be with me anywhere I go...

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2001-05-23

I generally liked this recording because it presents much unfamiliar material (Mehul, Bruneau) combined with Mr. Alagna's excellent diction. However, after I unwrapped the CD, I immediately compared his singing of "Je crois entendre encore" with Jussi Bjorling and found it lacking. Bjorling lets you feel the melancholy of what the character had and lost. He is obviously reliving his memories. The pianissimo at the end is truly haunting. Mr. Alagna's soft notes seem almost mechanically manufactured.and sometimes border on the unpleasant. He was best in those pieces that required more spinto sound (the selections from Samson et Dalila and Le Cid, for example). I would recommend this recording if only for the unfamiliarity of much of the material.

      5 out of 5 stars Alagna is a stud.......2001-05-06

This CD is primo Alagna. Only his first recital and maybe the Rondine are better. People say he's in decline, but they just need to listen to the Gluck track on this CD. Or the Meyerbeer. Or the Gounod. It's all great. Yay Roberto!

      Album Description

When complete the Naxos Historical Caruso edition will constitute the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order, thus enabling the artistic development of this great artist to be followed in detail. In 1919, shortly after the period covered by this CD, Caruso was to celebrate his twenty-fifth year, yet in these recordings there is no sign of strain or wear on the voice at all, only the brilliant sounds that made Caruso world-famous and the first real operatic star of the gramophone.

      5 out of 5 stars Caruso for a song........2004-03-15

In the liner notes provided with this CD, you will read that opera patrons during the years these recordings were made sometimes paid the equivalent of $1,000 to attend a Caruso performance. Modern marketing, Naxos, and restoration engineer Ward Marston allow us to hear 77 minutes of Caruso recordings for merely a fraction of this cost.

Doyen of reviewers J Scott Morrison has already given Volume 10 of the Naxos Complete Recordings of Enrico Caruso series a rave review, so I shall add only a few comments. Regarding track identification: the composer Faure to whom Track 1 is attributed is not Gabriel but the less well-known French composer J B Faure (1830-1914). The Tchaikovsky item in Track 4 is his Op 6, No 5. The starry quartet and sextet items (2 takes of each) are the ones to go for in the Caruso discography. They are (almost) debut recordings for his compatriot Amelita Galli-Curci, one of the few singers whose voice, like Caruso's, was wonderfully well caught by the acoustic recording process.

5 out of 5 stars Number Ten and Counting; And Simply the Best Caruso on CD.......2003-11-08

Naxos, praise be, is issuing all of Caruso's known recordings in the order in which they were recorded. In this, the tenth of the series, we have reached the era which, for some of us, is the ne plus ultra as regards Caruso's depth of musicianship and richness of voice, 1916 to early 1917. Not long afterward his health began to ebb. But in this time period his tenor voice was at its most baritonal, his breath control inhuman, and his musicianship scrubbed of it earlier vulgarity. I know there are those who revel in the latter, but I'm not one of them. We also get several alternate takes that were not issued on 78 at the time of their recording--one of the opening of the Quartet from 'Rigoletto' that only goes to the point where the mezzo enters, another of the complete Lucia 'Sextet' with Amelita Calli-Curci, Giuseppe de Luca and Marcel Journet among others.

Of special interest here are the selections sung in French--with excellent diction, it must be said--Tchaikovsky's 'Pourquoi?,' and Lensky's aria from 'Eugène Onegin' (gorgeous!), as well as Godard's 'Chanson de Juin,' Saint-Saëns's 'Vois ma misère, hélas' from 'Samson et Dalila.' Best of all are the two arias from Bizet's 'Pearl Fishers': 'De mon amie, fleur endormie,' and especially an absolutely stunning 'Je crois entendre encore.'

Other highlights: the full Quartet from 'Rigoletto' with Galli-Curci, Flora Perini, and de Luca; 'M'appari' from Flotow's 'Martha' with a final B-flat that will knock your socks off (and SO much better than the version he recorded more than ten years earlier).

Fauré's 'Sancta Maria' sounds Italian, I must say. 'Santa Lucia' is just a tad hokey. But Caruso's own 'Tiempo antico' is delightful. Andrea Chenier's 'Come un bel di di maggio' is sung with delicacy, grace and ardor. There are a couple takes of a ditty ('L'alba separa dall luce l'ombra') by Tosti and another couple of popular songs by Castaldon and De Crescenzo.

Finally, two takes of an aria I'd never heard before from Anton Rubinstein's 'Nerone,' 'Ah! lumière du jour.' Caruso's trumpet-like high notes are really something here.

I've acquired all but two of the previous Caruso CDs on Naxos. I've also had earlier transfers of some of the material and I have to say that Naxos and their miracle man, Ward Marston, are doing an amazing job of presenting cleaned-up yet true-sounding transfers. Evviva!

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Night In Paris!.......1999-03-19

This disc is a real gem! The sound quality is outstanding! Especially for a budget motivated label like Laserlight. Caballe is superb and Jose Carreras is even better. The love duet from Chenier is a great climatic splendor for the concerts finally. The only downside to Nessun Dorma was the last Vincero! was not held quite long enogh for my taste. But all in all this disc is worth dropping a few cents on. Buy it and you will be amazed!
