O Paraiso

If traditional New Age music gives you the willies or if you are already a fan of vocalists such as Marta Sebestyen or Enya, Madredeus's Teresa Salgueiro will bewitch you with her velvety-smooth chanteuserie backed by a classical guitar duo, acoustic bass, and sythesizers. Madredeus, a quintet of Portuguese musicians, take their name from their former rehearsal space, a convent whose abbreviated moniker translates loosely as "Mother God" or "Holy Mother." And though the material on O Paraiso is not religious, the spirit in which Madredeus make their music is full of reverence and deep affection. The strings are water, the voice is wind. Listening to the record is floating, dancing, swimming, swaying--all while sitting perfectly still. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting :.......2006-05-28

I've grown to love the beautiful music from my mother's homeland, "fado". This album by the group Madredeus is beautiful! The music is haunting and strange, while being very soothing. I understand and speak Portuguese, but everyone will get this. "O Paraiso" means "the paradise", this album surely lives up to it's title, enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Soaring, angelic soprano; soulful guitars, synthesizers.......2006-03-23

Sometimes irritatingly New Age Euro-pop. More often a satisfying juxtaposition of Teresa Salgneiro's soaring, angelic soprano and a soulful accompaniment of classical guitars and synthesizers, in med-tempo and (merely) pretty melodies. Growing on me. Stand-outs: tr 6--A praia do mar (sounds like pop variation on simple, stately/courtly, yearning dance). tr 7--O fin da Estrada (for ambiguous meter); tr 8-Agora. tr 12-O sonho (voice soars over a web of strings in lovely melody). [70:08]

5 out of 5 stars I don't understand..........2006-03-21

...a word of what they are saying.

What I do understand is, for me, this newly discovered sound called fado. This is a mesmerizing tranquil cd that is pure spiritualism. This is some of the finest acoustic guitar ensembles I have heard in quite some time. The angelic voice, haunting at times, is one that enters your viscera.

I started out with one cd, then two, now I must have all of Maderdeus' work. It makes me want to go to Lisbon just to see if there is more of this lurking in the out-of-the-way back alley clubs.

I made the mistake of ordering two of these cd's at the same time. I was going to send one back. But after my wife heard this incredible music she snatched it up and put it in her vehicle.

This music is not for everyone. It is only for one person...you.

Enter fado. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful.......2006-01-26

This whole album can be most aptly described as brilliant. Although the musical line-up is relatively simple, the music is amazingly rich and sophisticated in melodic content. There are almost no weak moments and each and every bit of the songs have timeless and uplifting aura that encapsulates you from the very beginning. The vocals by Teresa Salgueiro is a seminal example of how poetic lyrics can transcend beyond their inherent rendition. Along with flawless orchestration which overcomes the intricacies of merging strong instrumental content with female vocal, Madredeus excels in conveying the melanchonic mood of Portugal even for those who don`t speak Portugese. The overall effect is, however, universal and ethereal...

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-08-13

I was introduced to this music by a friend of mine and wasn't sure I'd really like it, but when she began the music for me I just didn't know I could feel so uplifted by music. Teresa's voice is mesmerizing and a pure joy to listen to. This is one of their greatest collections. Although Andorinha da Primavera is my all-time favorite for personal reasons, the entire CD is great to listen to and find your own little private spot in your mind.

This album is just a long drone, (one 65-minute track).
Do I really need another album like that in the krautrock vein? I mean if I want good droney stuff I'd much rather get a Klaus Schulze album than this dull-ish stuff. OR, while we're on the subject, what's wrong with classical? A Mozart symphony soens the same job for me as ART and it's a heck-of-a lot more accomplished musically (sorry for being snarky). Heck, even Ash Ra Tempel is nicer. A.R.T. is the Jandek of Psychadelic right now.

"God bless you AMT." -- Pitchfork

Brand new full-length album from Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO features the recent addition of female vocalist Kitagawa Hao. Recorded over a period of four months at The Acid Mothers Temple, this is a very clean-sounding and polished AMT. Frontman Kawabata Makoto admitted, only half joking, that this has the "cleanest sound in AMT history!" More controlled than many of their speaker-destroying, fuzz-blasted speed-guru jams, Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is focused on mystic ambient passages leading into Makoto's head-heavy echo-riffs. Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is clearly one of the new classic AMT recordings. Prepare to have your mind blown slowly with evolving heavyweight jams and climactic peaks of exquisite ecstasy. Somewhat outstanding 2000 release, this looks to be Acid Mothers Temple's second piece of work. Read somewhere that this is actually a CD reissue of a vinyl record, with two added bonus cuts. Track listing is as follows: "La Novia"(40:40); during this tune, AMT main man Makoto Kawabata plays electric guitar, harp and bouzouki, "Bois-tude la biere"(3:49) and "Bon Voyage au LSD" which takes the listener(s) far into a journey that reaches the inner mind. Might be tough to locate a copy of this title. Keep looking. It's worth the trouble.

Too bad this record is so hard to find. Acid Mothers Temple is the single most influential and groundbreaking band (with apologies to the Ruins and Boredoms) to come out of the Japanese underground scene. Virtuoso musicians reprocess and reform western psych and space rock into an entirely new whole. AMT are clearly not for everyone, but what truly interesting music is?

2 out of 5 stars Yeah, Groovy, Man!.......2004-12-10

Firstly, there are just 3 tracks on this, not 13.

Track 1 begins with 5 minutes of chanting and vocalists doing miaowing sounds. Then a load of hippie pot smoking music kicks in. I can imagine this being played to footage of people protesting against the Vietnam war or of people dancing around a field. After 5 minutes of this it starts to sound like a racket, with the guitars being tortured rather than played. The same riff is played over and over. 16 minutes in and it sounds like a new track is starting, the riff is slightly changed, otherwise it's the same. 18 mins and the same 4 seconds of music has been repeating itself for 2 minutes. 20 mins: peace at last! Just a drone now, a bit like violins being tuned up, not very interesting though. 22 minutes: the original riff is back, with a flute joining in. 25 mins: this is getting really repetitive, the synth sound is slightly different. 26 mins: finally seems to be heading for some kind of climax. 29 mins: it all collapses, just as it was getting good, back to monotonous drone. 32 mins: repetitive clanging guitar dominates. 33 mins: tempo picks up, keyboards going crazy. 35 mins: sounds like the guitarist is trying to play over the sound of a space invaders machine. 39 mins: just an acoustic guitar now, quite pleasant, this bit. 40 mins: it's all over, phew! .

Track 2: ambient drone, sounds like something Sun Ra would have approved of. Male voice goes "tra-la-la-da-da-da", female voice is a load of echoing whoops and whelps. Only 4 minutes long.

Track 3: creepy effects music, like for someone wandering round an empty spaceship in some 1970s sci-fi movie. After 9 minutes these tuneless atmospherics turn into a shapeless rock dirge. ENOUGH! At 12 mins it changes into scratchy, noisy psychedelia, which I feel would be of use to those using interrogation techniques as a form of sonic torture. 17 mins: it's over, what a relief!

Overall, I think the best bits of this could have made quite a good 10 minute single, but this is a meandering mess that reminds me of the worst excesses of late 60s/early 70s rock. I'm glad I only rented this from my local public library.

In 2000, Japan's psychedelic rock masters hit the US and were captured ... on tape. That tape surfaced a year later as the much sought-after Born To Be Wild in the USA 2000 LP, which looked like one of those classic dubious "live" records from the '70s. Apparently there were 1,000 pressed, and they disappeared very quickly. Now, that LP has been re-mastered for this CD release.

4 out of 5 stars Eloquent, soaring: medieval meets mantra magnified.......2006-03-29

This takes some getting used to. I like psychedelic and spacy extended excursions, but also lots of folk, especially Irish and European, as well as the better class of electric folk rock. So, this album seemed perfect. Since it was the first AMT album I had bought, I knew that it was and was not like most of their other records. Like: the emphasis on length and breadth. Unlike: the more restrained, less freak-out nature at its core. The Occitan influences work eloquently here, and the East-West match-up inherently adds depth to the wide-ranging sonic palette. This album combines respect for this delicate and subtle music with a willingness to adapt it across time and space into a very different ambiance. I wish more bands could learn from the past while trying also to further such musical heritages into terms for our 21st century & diverse audiences.

By the way, if you like this, seek out the very rare (now) La Novia, an earlier effort in the same vein. Mantra of Love only suffers by comparison to its even better predecessor. If MoL had been the only such Occitan exploration, it'd have gained another star. On its own terms, I do recommend this album without reservation.

However, once you hear this, you will want more of the same; if you cannot find La Novia, the slightly more available Live in Japan album features a beautifully aeronautic version of one of La Novia's key tracks, which arguably soars even higher in concert. In sum, all three of these AMT + MP recordings merit a place in your collection, and nicely balance AMT's more groovy and unkempt manifestations.

P.S. I think Soundtrack of Our Lives "borrowed" this album's cover concept of blending the band member's faces onto old pictures of indigenous folk musicians on that Swedish band's "Origins, Vol. 1."!

3 out of 5 stars Acid Mothers Temple - 'Mantra Of Love' (Alien8).......2005-02-23

'Mantra Of Love' is apparently the last Acid Mothers disc to feature synth/vocalist Cotton Casino.Just two cuts here."La Le Lo" runs for 30 minutes and brings us even more of that lengthy droning noisy space rock, that many of us have come to love."L'Ambition dans le Miroir"(15:02)is more or less another piece of chaotic sonic mayhem, where I seem to hear Tibetan bells, groovin' snyth work and mind-scrambling guitar licks being put to full use.Sounds really good while wearing headphones.

        5 out of 5 stars AMT.......2004-09-19

Acid Mothers Temple, the world-class modern psychedelic rock band of Japan, released what might be their most beautifully mellifluous album yet this summer. As a highly prolific musical collective, having produced over forty releases since their inception in 1995, this is no small feat. Two of their more notable recent albums, Electric Heavyland and Univers Zen ou de Zéro à Zéro, were much more ... well, heavy on the hyperkinetic freakouts and cosmic delirium. Mantra of Love seems to be a watershed, veering into more spacious and resplendent regions of sound. Wailing tsunamis and thunder-shattered percussion have been traded out for more pleasant and easily discernible gales.

"La Le Lo," the first of two lengthy tracks on the disc, is said to be a traditional Occitan hymn drawing from the indigenous language of southern France in the 11th to 15th centuries, marking their second flirtation with ancient folk styles since La Nòvia. The bouzouki and electric sitar that snake around Cotton's voice recall Popol Vuh (particularly the Heart of Glass soundtrack) and other kraut rock while the synthesizer sends spiraling waves into space, like a message from the desert to the stars. (Interestingly enough, AMT founder/figurehead Mokoto Kawabata claims that he hears music broadcast from outer space directly into his head.) The song ebbs and swells a number of times, oscillating between bucolic and cosmic, before launching into an extended lysergic jam.

The second and final track, "L'Ambition Dans le Miroir," is even more hushed, leading in with shimmering wind chimes and the ubiquitous sound of astral synth. Guitars are strummed in a somber tone while Cotton Casino sings her swan song -- this is, sadly, rumored to be her final performance with the AMT collective. The song dwindles into a restrained drone of keyboards, feedback, and ambient texture until all has been stripped away and only the chimes remain, swaying gently in the breeze... -- B.W.

        Product Description

With 6 years of existence and already a rich discography, around a dozen of titles, Acid Mothers Temple presents today their new studio album, and which is in fact the 6th of the band (after the three first on PSF, New geocentric world of AMT and Absolutely freak-out - all others are considered by Makoto Kawabata himself, as AMTs special concept releases). Univers zen ou de zéro à zéro is a full recording, with the whole world of AMT...from spirit to love, freak-out psychedelia, cosmic folk, blues, humour... a great introduction for all new listeners, and maybe, for all fans, another magic mushroom treasure ! Indeed, musically, it is probably one of the best achievement, including the demented opening track Electric Love Machine (or how see 40 years of acid rock !). But impossible to avoid the two magnum opus (of more than 20 min. each) forming the cornerstone of the album, and also the first studio version of the emblematic God bless AMT (only plays live as ending) and more... plenty of freaky guitars, space electronics, monster bass etc.. and super revolution in Cotton super Casinos vocals : in almost all tracks, she sings ala Mady Gula Blue Heaven style, delicate, beauty, dreams ! Special guest in this album, the great guitarist Hiroshi Narazaki (ex Les Rallizes Dénudés, Zuno Keisatsu, Port Cuss). Archangels thunderbird brings the New Rock from the cosmos... French import CD, that's stated to be like Acid Mothers Temple's sixth sudio effort. With the several various incarnations of the band, limited edition live releases, special pressings that AMT put out, it's TOUGH to keep track. Either way, 'Univers Zen...' is a worthy six track offering by these Japanese space-noise rock merchants. Liked the heavy guitar riffs in the ten-minute opener "Electric Love Machine", the haunting "Saturn's Mechanical Angel" and probably the freak-out twenty-two minute mind erasing "Crystal Sun And Silver Moon" the best. Another good time for true Acid Mothers fans. A should have.

4 out of 5 stars Acid Mothers Temple - 'Born To Be Wild In The USA,2000' (Wabana).......2006-01-24

Thought this live CD would be worth purchasing for me,specially because I got to see the Acid Mothers fairly recent. As a live release,it's not bad.Only problem is I could've SWORN I had seen a bio of this disc that noted it ran over 75 in length.Fact is it's only forty minutes long.Still,it sounds really good, plus I'll assume maybe they were support for another band.Total of five tracks here,"Acid Tokion 2000"(7:41),the way-out there "La Novia"(13:38),the familiar sounding "Pink Lady Lemonade"(8:06),the noisy "Speed Guru"(9:52)and "God Bless Acid Mothers Temple"(1:20).ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE freakin' RULES!!Space rockers, you have a wake-up call.YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!
