At the Edge

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Mickey Hart's personal odyssey into the spirit of percussion. As producer of The World, he showcases some of the most dynamic, yet sublime music of our planet. On AT THE EDGE he combines these ancient techniques and instruments with the most modern of recording technology to explore the outer limits of drumming. The companion piece to his first book, this album is a chronicle of Hart's search for the rhythmic beginnings of music, for the primal pulse that has beaten under every human activity -- all celebrations, rites of passage, wars, shamanic rituals -- in every culture since time immemorial. Exploring the primeval instrumentation of man's earliest sonic expression, the "instruments that have made it through time," Hart tuned the percussive rudiments of whistles and gourd rattles, wooden rainsticks and slit gongs, panpipes and bells, using state-of-the-art spatial reverberation and electronic processing. Acoustic natural sounds (wind, thunder, rain, insects, recorded with close-microphone technique outside his mountain home) were mixed, enabling Hart to create the environment for "an ancient future, allowing us to go back in time, recreating a more silent space."

It is a journey to the Edge, "between the old and the new...rhythm and noise, just as much as between imagination and reality, nature and music, or creation and destruction." An exquisitely peaceful soundscape evolves from a world before the presence of man ("#4 for Gaia") through quickening rhythms of human activity to the final sonorous swirl of chanting voices ("Pigs in Space") in a silence devoid of nature, a silence of Man at the Edge he has reached. Where, for our world to survive, we must change rhythms. And dance.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Precursor To Planet Drum...........2002-08-12

This CD goes well with the following CD Planet Drum.

This is Mickey's CD companion to the superb book "Drumming At the Edge..."

I just love how the CD starts off with the quietness of the "Forest" noises, going from track to track adding a little more percussive instruments building up to track 5 where Mickey & Co start to really cook. It is almost like you are starting at the beginning of time up to the present.

Great stuff to set your mind to!

Album Description

Tom Adams has been one of the most respected bluegrass banjoists for a generation, adding his talents to The Johnson Mountain Boys, The Lynn Morris Band, and Rhonda Vincent & The Rage. Michael Cleveland is one of the finest young fiddlers on the scene (and has already won the IBMA Fiddler of the Year award twice). Together they took over the intimate Ragged Edge music club for an unforgettable evening of virtuoso bluegrass duets. "This is the best seat in the house for what will be considered one of the greatest bluegrass performances of our time. Michael and Tom have delivered an amazing recording and a really good time. What I would've given to have been there." -Alison Krauss

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass.......2006-11-11

If you're looking up this album, you know who they are. The thing that is so exceptional and hasn't been mentioned here is this: the level of improvisation on this album is absolutely spectacular. Most bluegrass albums recorded in the studio have instrumental fireworks carefully thought out beforehand. On this live album Cleveland and Adams throw breaks back and forth with each one spiraling closer and closer to the edge of control; these guys don't know what the next lick to come from their fingers will be any more than you do. At the finest moments this album accomplishes the rare feat of having the player become invisible, an unconscious conduit for the music flowing from some unknown source, through the fingers and out into the air. A fantastic recording. If only more bluegrass recordings followed this aesthetic . . .

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent Old Time-Bluegrass Pickin' and Fiddlin'.......2006-01-02

Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland are veteran masters of Banjo and Fiddle. If you are a veteran Old Time-Bluegrass listener or album collector, this is a must have gem of a CD. If you are a veteran musician with this music, you will appreciate playing along if you can keep pace as they fly through the songs. This is toe tappin' and foot stompin' American music at its best. It's a whole bunch of music through most of the CD from just two wonderfully gifted musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A playful live set by two bluegrass virtuosi.......2004-07-02

Banjo plunker Tom Adams is a veteran player who's been in quite a few high-powered bluegrass bands, including gigs with Jimmy Martin, Rhonda Vincent and the Johnson Mountain Boys, while fiddler Michael Cleveland is best known for his work with Dale Ann Bradley and Rhonda Vincent. Here they team up on a lively, often dazzling set of mostly-instrumental duets, zipping their way through around two dozen tunes, most of 'em played at a lightning pace on fiddle and banjo. The vocal material is nice, too -- in fact, an album highlight comes when Tom Adams flubs the lyrics on "Shady Grove," and improvises with the inspired line, "Blah, blah, blah..." Nice to sometimes see a few cracks in the super-musicianship of the bluegrass upper crust.

Relegated to obscurity until leading hip-hop producers started mining his records for beats, producer and composer David Axelrod is a true American genius. There is no shortage of "Axe" compilations on the scene, but this one benefits from fluid programming, great artwork, and for the first time, mastered from the original session reels. One of Capitol Records' leading producers in the studio, the majority of this Axelrod compilation is culled from his 3 solo albums for the label; Song of Innocence, Songs of Experience, and Earth Rot. Also present are some break beat covers by Lou Rawls, and an extended piece the Axe contributed to a Cannonball Adderley LP. Filled with spacey vibes, eerie flutes, and super-funky rhythm, this is the go-to compilation for Axelrod fans. If you have other compilations you'll still want this, and if you don't, get with it! --Kristian St. Clair

Album Description

Though he worked for a series of labels over the course of his storied career, David Axelrod is best known as one of Capitol Records' foremost producers during the company's glory years in the 1960s. Under his production, actor David McCallum released four albums; soulster Lou Rawls released a countless number of LPs (including his first gold album, Lou Rawls Live); Cannonball Adderly released Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (1966), one of the highest selling jazz albums of all time; and countless artists from Letta Mbulu to Common People released albums that spanned the gamut from funky African folk to psychedelic rock. Axelrod himself released three albums as a solo artist on Capitol - Songs of Innocence (1968), Songs of Experience (1969), and Earth Rot (1970) - the first of which even legendary producer Quincy Jones admitted was the immediate precursor to jazz-fusion.

David Axelrod was instrumental in creating the Black Music division at Capitol Records in the mid-'60s, and had a string of hit albums with artists such as soul singer Lou Rawls and jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Today he is best known in the hip-hop world for three albums he released on Capitol under his own name between 1968-1970. Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, Earth Rot, and other ancillary Axelrod productions are among the most sampled records in hip-hop history, having been mined by producers as varied as Madlib, DJ Shadow, and Dr. Dre, Mos Def, and many others.

Original LPs that Axelrod produced are coveted among DJs and crate-diggers. This definitive retrospective is the first release to put his career in its proper context and present it with the sonic quality it merits.

5 out of 5 stars he wears sunglasses INSIDE.......2005-12-11

So good! Axelrod founded the "black music" division of Capitol records in the '60s. During his reign at Capitol he produced amazing records by Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls and David McCallum. He also pretty much created the two weirdest Electric Prunes albums. What has been hardest to track down are three of his own records during that era: Songs of Experience, Songs Of Innocence, and Earth Rot. On these, Axelrod put together an orchestra of sound complete with strings, hammond organ and a super rich backbeat that's been sampled and worshiped by the likes of DJ Shadow, Madlib and Dr Dre.

This collection compiles tracks from those three albums as well as a few choice cuts he produced for other artists at Captiol circa '66-'70. His sound is one that laid the foundation for the explosion in fusion which would happen in the '70s. Miles Davis always gave props to Axelrod and one could argue that he was very responsible for helping lay the foundation for a work like Bitches Brew to be born. Taking the richness of soul, the freedom of jazz, elements of classical composition and hints of rock and psych-pop Axelrod is one of the few guys who can get away with wearing sunglasses inside 'cause he was just that cool!

4 out of 5 stars Pick It Up !.......2005-12-11

Okay well it must be said that part of the reason that there is renewed interest in DA's work is because his work has been source material for Dr. Dre and DJ Shadow both of whom have appropriated the funky percussive elements which underly many of DA's compositions. Word spread and soon lots of samplists, DJs, and turntablists started dumpster diving for anything with the Axelrod name on it in an effort to come up with that perfect loop much in the same way that early samplists plundered James Brown recordings for "phat beats" (e.g. "The Funky Drummer").

All this aside what you have here is an overview of DA's work he accomplished while working for Capitol records. Thus its more of a survey than it is a single, cohesive work but thats okay. We have some examples of interesting compositions which, certainly at the time, were pushing some boundaries by fusing funk, classical harmony, and the occasional electric guitar within highly dynamic arrangements (Check out "The Smile", "Songs of Innocence"). Sure some of the instrumentation sounds dated but that reflects the recording and arrangement practices which called for strings and brass which are elements I miss in pop music of today.

What I really like is that DA covers a lot of sonic ground with his quality arrangements and typically wraps it up around the four minute mark. And this was at a time when most artists were still trying to perfect the 2 minute pop song format. In some ways his work presaged the prog rock music scene that later emerged though those acts typically went overboard and burdened us with 20 minute album sides containing unengaging arrangements and faux classical flourishes in an attempt to fool hipsters into thinking they were listening to something "really cool".

But back to DA. There is a sense of suspense throughout all these works and one can easily imagine some of this music being used as soundtrack elements for films (check out "A Divine Image" for a good example). He creates some serious tension here that lingers on for quite a while before it moves into a loping drum beat that moves you past the eerie sounds that came right before. The longest track on the CS is "Tensity" which features Cannonball Adderly so you the opportunity to hear this jazz giant rip over what we now recognize as very funky beats which is something that ,in general, jazzers hadn't necessarily embraced.

I recently read an interview with DA who mentioned that both Quincy Jones and Frank Zappa strongly urged him to hire a publicist to advance his public profile though its a move he never made which is a shame since he had a great deal to offer
as a producer and arranger. So should you buy this CD ? Oh I think so. Its leagues aboves anything you hear today and has spirit and organic energy that makes it ride high above some of the over-produced stuff you hear today. Look at it another way.
The samplists love to pick up stuff that has its own energy and warmth because it makes their jobs all the easier as they assemble tracks. So check it out

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection of Axelrod's Capitol Years.......2005-11-05

Listening to David Axelrod, even after these many years, is still an adventuorus experience, musically bold, unpredictably changing tone and mood, working the edge of the melody, exploring different atmospheres ... well, you may have noticed my reverence for this man.

As a producer, where he made his name first and reach deep recognition, he worked with Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls, Electric Prunes and David McCallum -yes, Illya Kuryakin- and as distinct as these choices were, realizing some far reaching material in each case.

"The Edge," this anthology, focuses on one specific period of his career, his years at Capitol. So, the albums "Songs of Innocence," "Songs of Experience" and "Earth Rot" are properly represented, with the rest of the material coming from some of his most far out recoding sessions as a producer.

The material here is consistently strong, beautiful and challenging often at once, ahead of its time, never conceding to caution nor selling his vision short. Choosing among these selections, can only be picking a certain kind of gem, pointing to those tracks that move me the most.

One caution for long time fans of Axelrod, If you own the three albums he wrote and performed, what you'll find here will only be his production work. It's worth mentioning, though, that the cuts with Lou Rawls, Letta Mbulu -whoever she is, her track is spellbinding- as well as the tender "Theme from The Fox" with Don Randi and Cannonball's monumental "Tensity," are well worth buying this album.

For people who are new to David Axelrod, or looking for a "point of entry" into his work, this is a perfect purchase. You may even hear in these tunes many of the people you already worshipped. His influence, although little known, has been extensive. This album will introduce you to one of the original sources of some the best music going on today from Jazz to Hip-Hop.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music...but nothing outstanding.......2007-02-09

I first heard of him thru his cover's of Tori Amos "Butterfly" & Bjork "Army of Me" which were excellent! He's got some pretty melodies but nothing gravitating.

5 out of 5 stars Astonished.......2006-11-14

Not to sound like a crazed fangirl here, but it's hard for me to write a review of this album without going into a string of superlatives. Casey Stratton has a voice that is truly unique in modern music. There probably hasn't been a voice like his since the days of the castrati. I'm not trying to insult Casey's masculinity here, I'm just trying to be descriptive. The bottom line is, the man's voice is glorious. His range seems to be from about mid-tenor to soprano. I haven't been so captivated by a voice since Jeff Buckley.

Enough about the voice, though one could never truly say enough about it. Let's talk songwriting. Standing at the Edge is full of songs both catchy and complicated -- always a welcome combination. Stratton understands that for a chorus to be epiphanous, you need to build to it. And when he gets to the choruses of his more upbeat songs, he knocks you flat with the power of his voice and the beauty of his arrangements, as in The Spirit of Jupiter and For Reasons Unexplained. Blood turned out to be a favorite, with the pounding piano and celt-rockesque chorus. The ballads on this album are no less wonderful.

Really, this man can sing whatever style he wants short of ACDC style growly screaming. If he shredded his voice with Back in Black I'd never forgive him. Not that I don't like ACDC (I do), just that Casey Stratton's voice is a thing of such natural beauty that to damage it with cigarettes or screaming would be like taking a sledgehammer to Michelangelo's David, or bulldozing Angkor Wat, or ... you get the picture.

Also, I happened across his website this morning and was pleased to discover that he has an extensive back-catalogue available at his digital music store, and has a new album out as well. He has several holiday albums too, and I'm a sucker for those. I'll be buying his entire discography as soon as I can manage (I'm po').

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the haters, Casey is magical!.......2006-06-13

This CD is fantastic as is his new CD Divide, Buy them both then go to his website and purchase his other amazing music. Once you listen to this album you will be hooked. It is true that if you like Tori and Sarah you will like Casey, yet he creates his own music that doesn't copy Tori or Sarah but compliments them. Casey is magical and he deseves more exposure. Buy copies of his albums for your friends, they will be happy that you did.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful Voice.......2006-03-11

Mr. Stratton's recording (STANDING AT THE EDGE) is a truly wonderful album for anyone who enjoys listening to a truly beautiful voice. This is a perfect album to play at work, to pop into the car, or to have playing at home. I am very much looking forward to Mr. Stratton's next project.

5 out of 5 stars Standing at the Edge.......2005-09-02

This album really showcases Casey Strattons magnificent voice. He has been described as a "male Sarah MacLachlan" , and this album also reflects his brilliant song writing skills in capturing the emotion of being standing at the edge between endings and new beginnings.

Casey Stratton's vocal range and warm tone is reminiscent of that of Darren Hayes. If you liked his recent The Tension and The Spark, you will love Standing at the Edge.

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ever Beside Me in My Heart.......2007-03-11

When "I Confess" boomed over WLS radio in Chicago, its sound was distinctive from most of the radio. It had a roughness and unpolished feel, but still was addictive with the guitar peeling out of the speakers, launching the local band. The songs on "At the River's Edge" are short, clocking around 2 & 1/2 minutes. Most of the band's first album "Breakthrough" that shares a cover similarity with this release are on this disc, but not all. There is a sweetness about the churning guitar sound on "Don't You Think It's Time You Stopped Your Cryin'" and the chugging rhythms of "Last Nite." "I And You" still has a haunting quality with the weeping organ, "We now are together, never again shall we part, we'll let nothing come between us, you are ever beside me in my heart." "I Lie Awake" has a great build and the classic churning guitars, making such a distinctive sound. "The Time of Year Is Sunset" offers dreamy harmonies that presage some of the Mercury sides the 6 would lay down several albums later. One of my favorite early Colony tracks is the pounding "Cadillac" that sounds part Indian drum chant, part garage rock, "I looked in the trunk but there wasn't no jack; I think I'll take this car right back." "Sunshine" that was the flip side of the 45 r.p.m. record of "Cadillac" wisps with great Colony harmonies. "I Love You So Much" is a great track with its distinctive melody, "Every night I hope & pray your sweet love will come my way, and now you're here, I've felt your touch, I love you so much." "You're Gonna Be Mine" has a distinctive sound that puts a smile on your face while it sets your toe tapping, "I never thought that I'd ever find any girl who'd drive me out of my mind." From their "Colonization" LP, the 6 do a delightful version of the John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) penned tune with great high airy vocals and ripping lead guitar. With 22 tracks, "At the River's Edge" is an excellent release to review the early work of this great 60's Chicago band. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars I CONFESS that this is a great album.......2000-09-26

This excellent album is BETTER than the Colonized Greatest Hits album because New Colony Six's early singles were much more consistent than their later song. I definitely recommend this 4 star album.

2 out of 5 stars If You No Longer Want DeYoung in the Band, then Act Like It.......2006-12-29

Seriously...Gowan is ok, but he's no DeYoung. If they want to do Styx minus DeYoung, then do Styx minus DeYoung songs. Last time I saw DeYoung live, he didn't sing any Tommy Shaw or James Young songs.

It's not that I dislike Gowan...he's good. When I saw Styx live with him, it was a great show. Gowan has a lot of charisma, and a keyboard that spins, but the DeYoung songs were off, because he wasn't DeYoung, and that kind of ruined it for me. Maybe ditching the DeYoung stuff and introducing us to some Gowan originals would be better.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars if Dennis DeYoung was still in the band.......2006-09-26

Alright Yes Lawrence Gowan does do a good job but he doesn't come anywhere close to what Dennis DeYoung is. The real reason Styx released so many live albums in beetween BRAVE NEW WORLD and CYCLORAMA is because they were trying to promote all of their new memebers. Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan, and Glen Burtnik. They needed to do this in order to as Dennis DeYoung put it "CAARRRRRY OOONNNNN".

2 out of 5 stars At the River's Edge: Live in St. Louis ~ Styx.......2006-01-15

this is not so bad, but the songs of Dennis DeYoung are bad, because Lawrence Gowan sings on them. He can't sing half as good as Dennis. The rest of the band plays good, but they should not do Dennis's songs live without Dennis. Lorelei doesn't sound so good either, James Young used to be a good singer, but not anymore. Tommy Shaw sounds very good here. Edge Of The Century doesn't sound so good. It kinda sucks. I like the studio version a lot more. So if you want a live album, then you must buy Return to Paradise.

4 out of 5 stars Another live album, I think it's cool! .......2004-10-02

Another live album, I think it's cool! The songs of the 'Brave new world' album are very good! It really is worth 4 stars, and if I were you, I would buy this album. Highly recommanded!

4 out of 5 stars Terrance, get over it!.......2004-03-22

Terrance, get over it. I liked this album! The boys have caught their stride and it shows. They're having fun and the energy is infectious.

If you are a Dennis fan, it may not be for you. However, if you are a STYX fan, then this is for you!
