Mickey Hart's personal odyssey into the spirit of percussion. As producer of The World, he showcases some of the most dynamic, yet sublime music of our planet. On AT THE EDGE he combines these ancient techniques and instruments with the most modern of recording technology to explore the outer limits of drumming. The companion piece to his first book, this album is a chronicle of Hart's search for the rhythmic beginnings of music, for the primal pulse that has beaten under every human activity -- all celebrations, rites of passage, wars, shamanic rituals -- in every culture since time immemorial. Exploring the primeval instrumentation of man's earliest sonic expression, the "instruments that have made it through time," Hart tuned the percussive rudiments of whistles and gourd rattles, wooden rainsticks and slit gongs, panpipes and bells, using state-of-the-art spatial reverberation and electronic processing. Acoustic natural sounds (wind, thunder, rain, insects, recorded with close-microphone technique outside his mountain home) were mixed, enabling Hart to create the environment for "an ancient future, allowing us to go back in time, recreating a more silent space."
It is a journey to the Edge, "between the old and the new...rhythm and noise, just as much as between imagination and reality, nature and music, or creation and destruction." An exquisitely peaceful soundscape evolves from a world before the presence of man ("#4 for Gaia") through quickening rhythms of human activity to the final sonorous swirl of chanting voices ("Pigs in Space") in a silence devoid of nature, a silence of Man at the Edge he has reached. Where, for our world to survive, we must change rhythms. And dance.

Beautiful Precursor To Planet Drum...........2002-08-12
This is Mickey's CD companion to the superb book "Drumming At the Edge..."
I just love how the CD starts off with the quietness of the "Forest" noises, going from track to track adding a little more percussive instruments building up to track 5 where Mickey & Co start to really cook. It is almost like you are starting at the beginning of time up to the present.
Great stuff to set your mind to!

Relegated to obscurity until leading hip-hop producers started mining his records for beats, producer and composer David Axelrod is a true American genius. There is no shortage of "Axe" compilations on the scene, but this one benefits from fluid programming, great artwork, and for the first time, mastered from the original session reels. One of Capitol Records' leading producers in the studio, the majority of this Axelrod compilation is culled from his 3 solo albums for the label; Song of Innocence, Songs of Experience, and Earth Rot. Also present are some break beat covers by Lou Rawls, and an extended piece the Axe contributed to a Cannonball Adderley LP. Filled with spacey vibes, eerie flutes, and super-funky rhythm, this is the go-to compilation for Axelrod fans. If you have other compilations you'll still want this, and if you don't, get with it! --Kristian St. ClairAlbum Description
Though he worked for a series of labels over the course of his storied career, David Axelrod is best known as one of Capitol Records' foremost producers during the company's glory years in the 1960s. Under his production, actor David McCallum released four albums; soulster Lou Rawls released a countless number of LPs (including his first gold album, Lou Rawls Live); Cannonball Adderly released Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (1966), one of the highest selling jazz albums of all time; and countless artists from Letta Mbulu to Common People released albums that spanned the gamut from funky African folk to psychedelic rock. Axelrod himself released three albums as a solo artist on Capitol - Songs of Innocence (1968), Songs of Experience (1969), and Earth Rot (1970) - the first of which even legendary producer Quincy Jones admitted was the immediate precursor to jazz-fusion.David Axelrod was instrumental in creating the Black Music division at Capitol Records in the mid-'60s, and had a string of hit albums with artists such as soul singer Lou Rawls and jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Today he is best known in the hip-hop world for three albums he released on Capitol under his own name between 1968-1970. Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, Earth Rot, and other ancillary Axelrod productions are among the most sampled records in hip-hop history, having been mined by producers as varied as Madlib, DJ Shadow, and Dr. Dre, Mos Def, and many others.
Original LPs that Axelrod produced are coveted among DJs and crate-diggers. This definitive retrospective is the first release to put his career in its proper context and present it with the sonic quality it merits.

he wears sunglasses INSIDE.......2005-12-11
This collection compiles tracks from those three albums as well as a few choice cuts he produced for other artists at Captiol circa '66-'70. His sound is one that laid the foundation for the explosion in fusion which would happen in the '70s. Miles Davis always gave props to Axelrod and one could argue that he was very responsible for helping lay the foundation for a work like Bitches Brew to be born. Taking the richness of soul, the freedom of jazz, elements of classical composition and hints of rock and psych-pop Axelrod is one of the few guys who can get away with wearing sunglasses inside 'cause he was just that cool!
Pick It Up !.......2005-12-11
All this aside what you have here is an overview of DA's work he accomplished while working for Capitol records. Thus its more of a survey than it is a single, cohesive work but thats okay. We have some examples of interesting compositions which, certainly at the time, were pushing some boundaries by fusing funk, classical harmony, and the occasional electric guitar within highly dynamic arrangements (Check out "The Smile", "Songs of Innocence"). Sure some of the instrumentation sounds dated but that reflects the recording and arrangement practices which called for strings and brass which are elements I miss in pop music of today.
What I really like is that DA covers a lot of sonic ground with his quality arrangements and typically wraps it up around the four minute mark. And this was at a time when most artists were still trying to perfect the 2 minute pop song format. In some ways his work presaged the prog rock music scene that later emerged though those acts typically went overboard and burdened us with 20 minute album sides containing unengaging arrangements and faux classical flourishes in an attempt to fool hipsters into thinking they were listening to something "really cool".
But back to DA. There is a sense of suspense throughout all these works and one can easily imagine some of this music being used as soundtrack elements for films (check out "A Divine Image" for a good example). He creates some serious tension here that lingers on for quite a while before it moves into a loping drum beat that moves you past the eerie sounds that came right before. The longest track on the CS is "Tensity" which features Cannonball Adderly so you the opportunity to hear this jazz giant rip over what we now recognize as very funky beats which is something that ,in general, jazzers hadn't necessarily embraced.
I recently read an interview with DA who mentioned that both Quincy Jones and Frank Zappa strongly urged him to hire a publicist to advance his public profile though its a move he never made which is a shame since he had a great deal to offer
as a producer and arranger. So should you buy this CD ? Oh I think so. Its leagues aboves anything you hear today and has spirit and organic energy that makes it ride high above some of the over-produced stuff you hear today. Look at it another way.
The samplists love to pick up stuff that has its own energy and warmth because it makes their jobs all the easier as they assemble tracks. So check it out
A Superb Collection of Axelrod's Capitol Years.......2005-11-05
As a producer, where he made his name first and reach deep recognition, he worked with Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls, Electric Prunes and David McCallum -yes, Illya Kuryakin- and as distinct as these choices were, realizing some far reaching material in each case.
"The Edge," this anthology, focuses on one specific period of his career, his years at Capitol. So, the albums "Songs of Innocence," "Songs of Experience" and "Earth Rot" are properly represented, with the rest of the material coming from some of his most far out recoding sessions as a producer.
The material here is consistently strong, beautiful and challenging often at once, ahead of its time, never conceding to caution nor selling his vision short. Choosing among these selections, can only be picking a certain kind of gem, pointing to those tracks that move me the most.
One caution for long time fans of Axelrod, If you own the three albums he wrote and performed, what you'll find here will only be his production work. It's worth mentioning, though, that the cuts with Lou Rawls, Letta Mbulu -whoever she is, her track is spellbinding- as well as the tender "Theme from The Fox" with Don Randi and Cannonball's monumental "Tensity," are well worth buying this album.
For people who are new to David Axelrod, or looking for a "point of entry" into his work, this is a perfect purchase. You may even hear in these tunes many of the people you already worshipped. His influence, although little known, has been extensive. This album will introduce you to one of the original sources of some the best music going on today from Jazz to Hip-Hop.

Beautiful Music...but nothing outstanding.......2007-02-09
Astonished.......2006-11-14
Enough about the voice, though one could never truly say enough about it. Let's talk songwriting. Standing at the Edge is full of songs both catchy and complicated -- always a welcome combination. Stratton understands that for a chorus to be epiphanous, you need to build to it. And when he gets to the choruses of his more upbeat songs, he knocks you flat with the power of his voice and the beauty of his arrangements, as in The Spirit of Jupiter and For Reasons Unexplained. Blood turned out to be a favorite, with the pounding piano and celt-rockesque chorus. The ballads on this album are no less wonderful.
Really, this man can sing whatever style he wants short of ACDC style growly screaming. If he shredded his voice with Back in Black I'd never forgive him. Not that I don't like ACDC (I do), just that Casey Stratton's voice is a thing of such natural beauty that to damage it with cigarettes or screaming would be like taking a sledgehammer to Michelangelo's David, or bulldozing Angkor Wat, or ... you get the picture.
Also, I happened across his website this morning and was pleased to discover that he has an extensive back-catalogue available at his digital music store, and has a new album out as well. He has several holiday albums too, and I'm a sucker for those. I'll be buying his entire discography as soon as I can manage (I'm po').

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.Customer Reviews:
Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20
Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

If You No Longer Want DeYoung in the Band, then Act Like It.......2006-12-29
It's not that I dislike Gowan...he's good. When I saw Styx live with him, it was a great show. Gowan has a lot of charisma, and a keyboard that spins, but the DeYoung songs were off, because he wasn't DeYoung, and that kind of ruined it for me. Maybe ditching the DeYoung stuff and introducing us to some Gowan originals would be better.
