Malian singer Habib Koite and his band Bamada serve up 12 songs with a gentle acoustic guitar-led swing, reminiscent as much of African troubadours like Henri Dikongue as his well-known native counterparts like Salif Keita. There is certainly a definite Malian lilt to his delivery as well as in the instrumentation and straightforward arrangements, and at times he displays the same bluesy penchant as Ali Farka Toure, albeit less stridently. Koite tilts toward a very contemporary, almost Western interpretation of his spiritual songs, with an overall folksiness softening the unmistakable African roots of his music. The result is a highly textured airy excursion that makes, with his dusty, soulful vocals, a highly appealing album of great introspective sincerity.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22
It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!
Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21
This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.
Superb.......2005-02-25
This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.
Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16
I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.
Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02
You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.
Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.
PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN.......2002-01-08
FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!
luminous artistry from a genius.......2000-12-26
the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!
A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17
This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Viscerally exciting.......2007-02-26
Opera doesn't get much more "in your face" than in this recording. None of the performers could be considered quintessentially "French," but in Saint-Saens' powerful and vital score, that's not a bad thing at all. The three main soloists are all highly effective. Rise Stevens' sultry mezzo voice nicely captures the combination of seduction and haughtiness that characterizes the persona of Dalila. Jan Peerce conveys both strength and vulnerability in his interpretation of the Samson role, and Robert Merrill sings the role of the High Priest with aplomb. Leopold Stokowski conducts a frenetic NBC Symphony Orchestra -- his only opera recording -- and it makes one wish he'd done more of them. Good, sturdy mono sound, without the weird microphone effects that were done on some of Stoky's other discs for Victor in the mid-1950s. This CD actually contains an additional duet from Act I that had to be cut from the original LP release due to space limitations (although it appeared in the now super-rare red vinyl 45-rpm four-record set released at the same time). The filler on this album (Tatiana's Letter Scene from Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin) is well-sung by Licia Albanese, who reportedly memorized the part in Russian just for this recording. It's interesting to know that at the time of this recording's re-release in 2006, Rise Stevens (age 93) and Licia Albanese (age 94) were still quite active with Met Opera ambassadorial and fund-raising activities.

Glad I stumbled upon this... One I can alway go back to & enjoy!.......2007-02-22
In 2001 or so I was hanging around a museum gift shop while waiting for my young son to look through the goodies. It happened to have "listening domes" & an eclectic mix of music samples... Tried this & pretty much HAD to buy it. Not really being into the "World music" I heard to date, I've since searched for *anything* similar (having bought their followup CD) - no luck.
Lest you think I'm a new age or world music junkie, among my favorite, most-played CDs are ones from Alice in Chains, A Perfect Circle, Crash Test Dummies, Blind Melon, Hum, Days of the New and Habib Koite's CDs.
If you are looking for something different & a little lower-key you should give this a try.
One of the best CDs I have.......2006-03-10
This album is incredible. If you read the other reviews, you will understand that the music is phenomenal.
In addition to how wonderful the music is itself, I also love this album because it is so light and uplifting - no heavy Western drum beat (but very beautiful and complex rhythms), a beautiful singing voice, melodies, and an African sound that will take you away to distant lands...
Every track on this album is excellent. I will buy all of his music.
I Loved It.......2004-02-12
I am new to Habib Koite's music but now I am hooked. From the first times I listened it just made me feel good like sitting in a big oversized comfortable couch. I can't understand the lyrics but the music and his voice carry me off somewhere to another place and time. His voice ripples over the smooth acoustics and laid back rhythms consisting of a blend of blues, jazz and Malian melodies. A Putumayo collaboration, the engineering acoustics on this CD are first rate.
The best of Mali grooves.......2003-08-29
i don't need to say any more. If you enjoy the sounds of Mali, you will love this one.
MA YA.......2003-07-09
I love world music the first time I heard Koite's track wassiye, I had to get the disc. One of the best cd's if you like detail music. The songs are excellent with superb arrangement using different musical toys. A must for music lovers.

Vocal Companions.......2002-07-17
The equal strength and drama that Olga Borodina & Dmitri Hvorostovsky can create together is outstanding. Well matched. I got this after being so impressed with Borodina as Amneris several years ago at the Met. Her characterization was rivetting. Mr. Hvorostovsky displays similar talents in the refreshing "Largo al factotum".
Both free spirits.
two great voices make a great match.......2001-06-14
A marvelous mix of solo arias and duets, these two fabulous voices blend beautifully, and have here chosen an interesting selection to delight our ears.
Rossini: Dmitri's glorious voice, and musical sensibilities, manage to bring a freshness even to the perhaps too familiar "Largo al Factotum"...compared with his '92 recording of this, his Italian here is even crisper, and voice even more honey-golden. Olga sings the part of Rosina (as it was originally written) in her wonderful warm mezzo, doing the famous "Una Voce Poco Fa" to perfection.
Donizetti: Sumptuously melodic and wonderfully sung, Olga's "O Mio Fernando" is exquisite. Rimsky-Korsakov: Though his operas are little known, these selections from "The Tsar's Bride" may make you want to hear more, and if you don't already have them, get all the available Dmitri CDs !
Saving the best for last, Saint-Saens' "J'ai Gravi la Montagne" from "Samson et Dalila" is sensational. Their voices really shine in this gorgeous duet...it's a spectacular piece.
The English Chamber Orchestra led by Patrick Summers does an excellent job here (especially in the Saint-Saens) and the little "libretto" is in the original sung language (the Russian in cyrillic) and with an English translation.
As a huge Dmitri fan, and an admirer of Olga Borodina, I find this well-rounded CD of arias/duets make for some very satifying listening.
Sensational Duet.......2001-04-08
This Borodina & Hvorostovsky team created at most dream like sound here. I'd like to hear more of great duet like this but not much chance, no wonder this CD has been a hit since it's release. We are really hungry for good Bell Canto operas. Why there isn't much available? I had a pleasure of attending concert opera performance of La Favorita at the Carnegie Hall in March. Mr. Hvorostovsky sung King Alfonso and he was absolutely wonderful. I thought he was 100 times better than I imagined. If Donizetti could hear, he would be very happy. Complete recording of Tsar's bride is available and I really appreciate if they release complete version of Barbiere and Favorita by these sensational current artists together.
Oh, the wonderful chemistry here!.......1999-06-06
A delightful concept album indeed. Borodina and Hvorostovsky are indeed more than competent equals. If the recordings of the 'Tsar's Bride' music are any indication, they should fill up opera houses and become better known in a very few years. Hooray for the young Russians!

Thanks to recordings like this--and to accomplished performers with a commitment to exploring uncommon musical territory--we can discover endless worlds of fascinating music. This program features "Jewish, Christian, and Muslim music in medieval Spain." In the 12th and 13th centuries Spain was a vital center for arts, learning, and religion--many different religious faiths and cultures interacted there. This recording and its follow-up volume give us a small but tantalizing taste of a part of that rich and fruitful period. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant glimpse into a lost world.......2004-06-05
I absolutely adore this set and frequently listen to both, often loud; at first the Arab muwashshah and the one Jewish piyyut were so foreign, I did not know what to make of them. But every time I listened, it was like peeling an onion: layer upon layer of subtle sounds and poetry. Some of the works are dignified and haunting (the Christian Cantar, Cantio, etc.), some belong to a lost secular tradition (the recited 'Poema de Mio Cid'), some frankly sensual and rich ('Ma li-l-muwallah' of Ibn Zuhr). And I was pleasantly surprised to see the great poet Yehuda ha-Levi's work set to music.
Authenticity is the key: these are accomplished scholars as well as musicians, piecing together fragments of foreign manuscript codices with the appropriate modern Moroccan prototypes, and creating period instruments. As another reviewer mentioned, most of the vocal stylings, particularly in the Jewish and Arab pieces, are not operatic, but rather, flat and nasal (but complex and fluid), and thus believable. The Christian interpretations are more 'classical', and utterly exquisite. Pronounciation in each represented language (Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Gallo-Portuguese, Spanish) is comprehensible and historically accurate.
I also appreciated the scholarly liner notes, which broadened my understanding of the music. I've spent much time comparing the Arabic, Jewish, and Latin to the English translations and transliterations.
This period of Jewish/Muslim/Christian relations was perhaps one of the most fruitful eras in history, and one of rare co-operation. Scientific, religious, philosophical and cultural achievements reached an all to brief apex of harmony. Rarely does one find such an extraordinary portrait of a Golden Age as represented here in the blend of musical styles.
you never want it to stop..........2002-04-05
Altramar's "Iberian Garden, volume I" has two things in common with Miles Davis' "The Birth of the Cool": first--the music is so great, so uniquely wonderful, that you never want it to stop; second--the music does stop...and fast. This disc is too short. Not so incredibly short as to get a star knocked off, but short. Either way, get this disc. It is a truly fine recording.

Wow. This recording (and its excellent volume 2) truly shows you the colors of the medieval Iberian world: spiritual, sometimes joyous, full of depth and dark emotions. To commend these performers farther, their recordings of the muwashshahat and a zajal are more convincing as medieval Andalusian music than even the modern Andalusian ensembles in Morocco. Unfortunately, those ensembles (more often than not) use the instrumental combinations which became popular and wide-spread in the 19th c. Altramar uses documentably medieval Arab instrumentation, and an amazing vocal style and clarity of Arabic pronunciation that perfectly frames and complements this repertoire.
There are gems in this recording.......1999-06-15
There is a lot to commend about this CD, but the one thing that really stands out in my mind is the quality of the vocals. For as beautiful as these trained voices are, the singers do not make the mistake of overwhelming the "feel" of the music by treating it as an operatic exercise. This is a very interesting CD and, for this listener, there are a few songs here which, alone, justify its purchase.

Pure delight.......2006-02-06
I'm a bit biased...because the performer is my father. However, objectively, this work is one of his best. It includes performances from all over Eastern Europe. His musical genius is evident and his masterful voice leads one to experience the pure artistry and grandeur of the selections. I have been told by some that his voice is healing and puts the listener into an altered state of consciousness, closer to the creator.

Customer Reviews:
Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30
As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).
That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.
The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.
For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.
excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27
Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

Correction.......2006-12-13
Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?
Please make your own decision.
Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05
... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.
This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.
I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)
The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22
Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.
I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28
I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.
This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.
There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.
Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.
