The Algeria-born Massi is sometimes referred to as the "Arabic Tracey Chapman"--but given her espousal of social and political issues, comparisons to dauntless advocates like Joan Baez, and especially, Israel's Chava Alberstein are far more apt. For her second album, the gently courageous singer applies her cool, sweet, preternaturally flexible voice and folk-influenced guitar to tales about love, parental concerns, and the universal longing for personal freedom. That she has made a serious study of the intricate, sensual Arab-Andalusian tradition is plainly audible in her compositions and arrangements, but sounds from the Indian subcontinent, French chanson, and American soft jazz have also seeped in. She is outspoken without rancor, passionate without disorder, and poetic without sentimentality--a beautiful woman with an aura of grace, intellect, and empathy, a modest yet arresting presence. In an age of loud-mouthed self-interest and garish overkill, she glows quietly, like a perfect pearl. --Christina Roden

The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars It lives in my cd player!.......2007-07-17

This cd was a surprise hit for me. I bought this cd because I loved their song featured on the One Tree Hill soundtrack, and now I am hooked. I bought this and four other cds at the same time and this is the one that stood out the most. If you're like me and looking to hear sounds other than the pop songs on the radio, this is the cd to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Like smooth dark chocolate!.......2007-06-28

I always wanted to use chocolate in a title. This album is exceptional. First one I own of theirs but am highly addicted! Just listen, I know you will be addicted too! Deb's voice is absolutely fantastic and the collarboration...cannot say enough!

5 out of 5 stars No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine..........2007-06-24

I found this cd at the library and checked it out because of the band's name- so melodramatic! I love this album, especially the song "Citywide Rodeo." Deb Talan's voice is haunting (for me anyway, but I like the weird chicks), and the duo's indie songwriting chops are superb. Very mellow music, like you might hear at some point in a Wes Anderson movie. Totally worth the $.
P.S. Deb, will you marry me? I don't make much money, but you can play your songs for me any time you want.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Late To The Party But..........2007-05-27

I can't believe it's taken so long for me to review such an unbelievably listenable album. Here's my problem with so many CDs: you buy them expecting a lot, listen a few times and put them away. I have a certain female singer/songwriter that I've been loyal to for many years even though her CD's (to me) have gotten worse and worse (some say she's being experimental but I say she's just trying too hard to be current and have some breakthrough success). The day I bought this woman's last CD is the same day I bought "Say I Am You." Suffice it to say, I listened to the first CD once and realized "never again" and then put in The Weepies. I was immediately relieved (although I knew I already loved them from their previous CD) that it's just as beautiful if not better than their first and I have no fear that they will decide to suddenly start channeling Justin Timberlake. These two artist do what they do and that is sing beautiful harmonies, write amazing touching lyrics and let the obviously love they have for each other shine through to touch everyone with their Happiness and talent. We are lucky to have them. Here's to their songs spinning madly on for many years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Not One Mediocre Song..........2007-05-27

Quick story: I went to see Deb Talan (one half of this incredible singing team) on purpose at a little dive in Los Angeles that tends to have cool new music now and again, after hearing her song at the end of the movie "Lovely and Amazing." The first singer performed and was just great but when Deb took the stage something different happened. She has this extraordinary lilting yet purposeful tone to her voice that makes you can't help but want to own everything she's recorded. But then she sang the song "You Turned Me Into Somebody Loved" and I lost it. She sang it straight and softly and I knew right then and there I would have to walk down the aisle at my wedding to that song. As luck would have it, I already had a fiancee and a wedding date, but the song wasn't out yet. So a fan on her website sent me a bootleg copy as long as I swore to buy the CD the second it came out.
Since its release, I've played it at least a thousand times, I love every song and I've turned so many friends on to it easily. All I have to do is have it playing in my car and inevitably someone will ask "who is this?"
I have yet in this review to mention Steve's voice which is incredibly gorgeous, moving, emotional and blends perfectly with Debs. The songs are quirky yet all melodic. Don't you hate quirky for the sake of quirky? I say, if there's it's not melodic I won't give it a second listen. So thanks guys. And now I must run and review your next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, again!.......2007-03-14

I asked for, and got this older Weepies CD for Christmas, based on how much I enjoyed their 2006 release. I was not disappointed. The combination of surprising lyrics, weaving harmonies, and Taylor-like bounce, simply makes me happy. I sincerely look forward to their next production.

Heard Bel El Madhi (The Gate Of The Past) on Link.TV and was intrigued by the wonderful melody. Bought the CD. Loved it. Bought the other three that have been issued by this great Algerian group. Even bought some more to give to friends. THis lady has an absolutely wonderful, clear, crisp and sultry voice.

Ghir Enta alone is worth your money, but this whole album is utterly fantasitc. Some songs are catchy, some are soothing, but they all share her fantastic voice and instrument playing. I'm not even a huge fan of world music. I'm more of a metal and electronic person, but the first time I heard Souad Massi I was hooked. You will be too.

I heard this reviewed on NPR and immediately knew I wanted it. Even though I don't know what she's singing about most of the time, her passion is universal.

This is great music to do it to.

I only liked 3 songs on this CD, numbers 2,3,& 5, but they were so good that I find myself back here again looking for more Massi. They really were worth the price of the CD. I hope Raoui will have some great gems also.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Debbie Debs on 1 CD!.......2007-07-17

This CD is a great over-view of the hits that the Debbie Deb franchise released back in the '80s. There are actually 2 Debbie Deb singers. The original singer who did "Lookout Weekend" and "When I Hear Music" was changed in 1987 to another singer. I don't know why the original Debbie Deb was changed. The original Debbie Deb from '84 released an album in '95 with the song "There's A Party Goin' On" These 4 songs were originally released on vinyl on Jam Packed Records. Label mates included Trinere, Freestyle, and Patty Currie. Both singers have distinct styles, even though the record label was trying to keep both singers sounding the same. The Debbie Deb singer from 1987 does a great job on the tracks of "Fantasy", and " I'm Searchin". All 4 tracks are classic '80s Freestyle, and will not disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars excellent ground-breaking miami freestyle.......2006-12-19

Debbie Deb is so underrated in the freestyle scene. Her classic When I Hear Music is one of the very first freestyle hits, and Gwen Stefani mentions she's inspired by her, but that's about as far as it goes. This album features Debbie's first 4 releases on Jampacked/Pandisc with When I Hear Music and Lookout Weekend (which sound quite similar), I'm Searchin' - which got lots of NY airplay and her nasal vocals are very likeable and addictive - and Fantasy - a track that in my opinion revolutionized freestyle music with the unique hard-hitting fast drums (making for excellent dancing) and her creative vocals. This album features the 4 12" mixes of her first 4 releases, 3 instrumentals and the dub mix of Fantasy. For fans of Miami freestyle and the likes of the Freestyle goddess Trinere, I recommend this! Before Shannon, before Trinere, before all of the NY latino freestylers (Safire, Judy Torres, Corina, Coro, Cover Girls), there was Debbie Deb!!! Debbie Deb also has a pretty good follow up CD of freestyle music (She's Back) which didn't get its due

Lame-O,
I saw Debbie Debbish open for Susie Ham-Nashmish a week ago, and for the first two songs I was impressed by how talented this mutha is. She can play everything,... and she can play everything very well! She's very wise. She has a great voice with great control, but she's got no soul, baby! The music is very brown, cheesy, and predictable. After a few songs, which all started EXACTLY the same, ("da-da-da doooo!") , I was so bored with the Debbheimer, that I also began regretting buying the tickets to see Susie Honeyham-Nashworth. I acutally felt sorry for the mormon musicians that she hires because there's no way anyone that I know would want to play this slop without getting some $$.

Thankfully Susan "Moon over my hammy"-Nashworth "came out with a towel and kicked ass and made me completely forget about my hat. When I was leaving, someone was talking about how her recordings were "sooooo great" , so I checked out this disc to give that girl one more try, but it's just safe, poopy middle of the road music. It's just like Coldplay, Glenn Branca, Eric Clapton, Shirley Hambone, or even Hootie and the Blowfish...safe radio friendly music. Big drag, babe. I can't remember anything about Debbie Debbster's performance except she wore apple tipped cowboy boots and a lime green brasierre on stage for her whole show. Carl, please stay away from the dishwasher.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!!!.......2005-05-08

These songs are awsome. I love the song "When I Hear Music"! Its the one of the best freestyle songs ever like when it has those robotic voices in the background. The songs really get you moving. "Lookout Weekend" was also an awsome song but not as good as "When I Hear Music". This c.d. may only have 4 songs but its is awsome. The other songs besides "When I Hear Music" and "Lookout Weekend" are pretty good also. Even though i wasnt around when these songs were out, i still love em. lol.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Singles On 1 CD......................2000-07-14

This album is for die-hard Debbie Deb fans only, others might think "4 songs and 4 instrumentals might be a rip-off". To me i don't think so, you do got to remember that these songs are dance/freestyle tracks. All the songs on here are Remastered (for the first time), i mean that's cool and all, because i have been waiting forever for them to remaster these songs for a very long time now. I have all 4 of these songs on here on vinyl and they are getting kind of old, i mean "When I Hear Music" and "Lookout Weekend" came out in the summer of 1984 and "I'm Seaching" and "Fastasy" came out in the summer of 1987. But i kind of like the way all four of these songs sound on vinyl, what i mean is the beat drowns out Debbie when she is singing. If you don't believe me listening to "Trinere And Friends Greatest Hits" on CD and you'll know the difference when you hear it. "Lookout Weekend" is a great CD, i mean the songs are Remastered for the first time since "Trinere And Friends Greatest Hits" CD came out in 1989. Get this if your a die-hard Debbie Deb fan. If your not really a big Debbie Deb fan but want to get some of here songs on CD i strongly recommend "Trinere And Friends Greatest Hits"

5 out of 5 stars Great independent singing and playing on this sophomore CD from Deb Talan........2005-10-07

What makes this CD better than her first is that there is a little more diversity of tempo out of Talan's compositions. Some songs gather a poignantly poetic value, while others are a little more upbeat. The CD starts out great, with the first five songs being a great 15-20 minute parcel of music. The last part of the CD has three great songs. Only about one or two of these songs sounded a little repetitive, but hey this is laid back folk, light rock, so what can you expect. Overall this CD is 80-85% excellent! If you get a chance to see Deb in concert, it is well worth it. Even better, check out her live CD "Sincerely" if you can get a copy of it. She also tours as one half of "The Weepies."

3 out of 5 stars I've Opened All My Doors.......2004-06-22

Deb Talan is wonderful and poignant singer/songwriter along the lines of Edie Carey, Anne Heaton, and Dar Williams. I have had the pleasure of seeing her live at the Iron Horse in Mass. and was pleasantly surprised. This CD is a testament to her talent. My personal favorite is "Forgiven" which can also be found on the Lovely & Amazing soundtrack, of which I also recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Great find.......2002-11-29

Boy am I glad I found this one! I came to this cd following hearing Deb Talan's voice singing on the soundtrack to the movie "Lovely and Amazing"-and the cd more than lives up to my expectations (hey-her song from the "Lovely and Amazing," was good enough to risk buying the whole album). And the song from the movie -"Forgiven" is on this cd. I would compare her voice and songwriting style to Jonatha Brooke (as another reviewer mentioned), Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega. If you like those singers- you will not be disappointed with this album.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is lovely and amazing!.......2002-11-01

When I first got this CD a year or two ago I became completely fixated and didnt stop listening for months (very good for singing in the car, too!). Every single song on it is good. Her voice is uniquely expressive and the song-writing is just..., way way up there with the best, quite a few of these songs have won various songwriting awards. I have no doubt that Deb will be discovered in a big way, when the time is right. Her music and her singing have an almost spiritual quality to me (see her live!), and I really can't compare her to anyone. She also happens to have a very spiffy new web site...

4 out of 5 stars Up and Coming.......2002-07-20

How to define a "new" singer-songwriter deserving of true praise? Others compare her to Jewel or Colvin; to me, her voice is most eerily like an early Jonatha Brooke (of The Story). Her production is much like that of more recent Story releases as well. No matter the comparison, though; Deb does it better, lyrically and vocally, and it shows here as elsewhere. A poet's heart with a keen eye and a minor case of perversity, a catch in her sweet voice and a reverent respect for every note in a chord make for a woman to watch!

What we hear here is the overly polished Talan; her more recent live album Sincerely, also available from Amazon.com, better showcases her poignant imagery without drowning some songs in overproduction. For example, the classic title track "Something Burning" would be more powerful, I think, without the crashing drums and extra sound-board wizardry that make for the mediocre-est of Adult Alternative. Better production would have easily made this a five-star CD. But this album still holds some solid gems, especially "Whetstones" and the "single" Forgiven, a plaintive song of loss and self-worth. And Deb's talent is not to be missed in any forum. See a show when you can; until then, get this disk!

(note -- a version of this review was originally submitted for Talan's own release of the same album, listed as a separate product on amazon.com. Although listed separately, the albums are the same; only difference is the publisher.)

I bought this CD for the Deborah Gibson vocals on 2 of the 15 tracks. I was not disapointed with her version of "Someone You Love" or the new acoustic version of "Lost In Your Eyes," my favorite Deborah song. What I didn't expect was how talented the O'Neill brothers are. Their instrumental versions of hit songs such as "Wonderful Tonight," "At Last," "Annie's Song," and now "Someone You Love" had me listening the CD many times over and put a smile on my face. If you're looking for soothing instrumental versions of familiar hit ballads that's not stale, you won't be disapointed with this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2004-10-08

I love these Sweet Africa CDS! I don't even know the language or the people who are doing the songs but just the sound itself is beautiful to my ears. All the songs are very soothing and I enjoy African music of all kinds. This is an excellent collection from various artists.
