Cibelle

Although this is her debut, Brazilian singer Cibelle (pronounced "see-BELL-ee") has already made a name for herself with standout appearances on Suba’s landmark São Paolo Confessions and Otto’s criminally overlooked Condom Black. This self-titled effort is cut from the same cloth with help from noted producer Apollo 9 and the sonic architects from Morcheeba. But even with this support, the chanteuse’s sultry sing-song voice (think Bebel Gilberto and Astrid Gilberto) is rightly pushed to the fore, allowing her rich vocal nuances to shine through regardless of whether she is singing in Portuguese or English. She also immerses herself in the production and writing here, writing or co-writing nearly all the music using an even mix of live instrumentation and textured programming backdrops. Highlights include the loose and funky "No Prego," the gentle ballad "I’ll Be" and the nearly traditional samba "Só Sei Viver No Samba." This is a promising first step from a talented up-and-comer. --Tad Hendrickson

Since her breakout performance on Suba's landmark Sao Paolo Confessions, singer Cibelle (pronounced see-Bell-ee) has enchanted Brazilian pop aficionados with her lovely musical purr. Here on her second album, the cool lounge production of her debut is pushed into a darker, more experimental realm without losing her music's sensual beauty. As ambitious as the production, the songwriting is challenging too with highlights like "Phoenix" and "Flying High" using a linear style rather than the back and forth of a verse, bridge and chorus arrangement. There's a couple of interesting covers as well--while her spare version of Tom Waits's "Green Grass" is a seemingly offbeat choice, her haunting, glitchy and near-unrecognizable cover of Jobim's "Por Toda A Minha Vida" is a different kind of surprise. With ultra-cool Apollo Nove and Tunng in the producers' chair, this subtle kind of sonic and music revision is to be expected, but it's a tribute to the singer that she keeps the challenging sound under the sway of her lovely voice. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

Like no one else, Brazilian born Cibelle makes use of a variety of elements to create unique, imaginative and enchanting peices of music. Her second album (the follow-up to 2003's inspired eponymous debut) is a genuine masterpiece. Moving into even more adventurous sonic terrain than its predecesor, the "Shine Of Dried Electric Leaves" combines rootsy acoustic instrumentation, electronic processing, noise guitars & children's toys, captivating textural soundscapes & pure melodies all anchored by Cibelle's unmistakable, moving voice. Cibelle produced this album over a period of 18 months, taking some of the tracks with her from London (where she now resides) to Sao Paulo (her home town) and back, gathering along the way contributions from various co-producers and performers, including Mike Lindsay (from UK Folktronica act Tunng);Apollo Nove (the innovative producer/artist from Sao Paulo, who produced most of her debut album); Parisian mixer, Yann Arnaud (Air, ! Sebastien Schuller), and guests such as Seu Jorge (of "City of God" and "The Life Aquatic' fame), freak folk pioneer, Devendra Banhart, and CocoRosie collaborator Spleen. While some of the album's ten original compositions and three covers are simple, limpid crytalline gems (her renditions of Tom Waits' "Green Grass" and of Jobim's "Por Toda Minha Vida" to name but a few).

5 out of 5 stars Simply, Fresh Feel-Good Music ........2007-06-13

Like no other vibe I've heard; this chick can sing. With subtle yet eclectic instrumentation and no preconception of a particular sound, Cibelle and friends will take you on a majic carpet ride of musical enchantment and dreamers' bliss. She shows inventiveness and resourcefulness on THE SHINE OF DRIED ELECTRIC LEAVES, with fresh down-to-earth and personal yet universal lyrics that pour from the heart and speak to the soul. Featuring tracks in both Portugese and English, this album moves you no matter what language you do or don't speak. The natural sounds of guitars and vocals meld magically with the electronic percussions and "sub-bass" accompaniment as she calls it.

Noteworthy guest artists include vocals by Devendra Banhart (London, London), Spleen (Green Grass, Mad Man Song), and Seu Jorge (Arrête lá, Menina). The opening track (Green Grass) is a refreshing cover of an old Tom Waits song of the same title.

A little latin, a hint of jazz, not too big, not too small, just cool. Some feel-good music to chill to.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad..........2007-04-29

I was expecting a lot more from this CD after the self titled one but while this may be a worthwile buy it will take its time to work on you.

Music wise her vocals have an upbeat feel to them and go well with the music, they kind of drift along. This is a great CD to have in your car on one of those warm days driving to work in the city.

If you are looking for anything similar to Bebel Gilberto however, as I was you may be a little disappointed at first but I asure you, listen to it a few times it will grow on you.

4 out of 5 stars First Impression.......2007-03-02

I'm just finishing listening to this album for the fist time, and I'm definitely rating it thumbs up. It's much more interesting than what I've heard from her before. But I have to say that "Arrete la, Menina" with Seu Jorge absolutely LEAPS off this album. It's amazing. I stopped and repeated it immediately the first time it finished. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars A sweet and sultry find.......2007-02-18

Cibelle is simply a magnificent songstress. The music is soft and undemanding, the perfect background music for any task or to be soaked in fully with absolute devotion.

1 out of 5 stars I'm guessing the presence of ganja was involved, just a guess.......2007-01-12

Is this supposed to be music?

Cibelle's debut cd, which was self-titled, was absolutely refreshing, it was everything you dreamed of Brazilian music sounding like. I could smell the atmosphere of Rio de Janiero from my stereo. Not so of her sophomore. Even the title, "The Shine of Electric Dried Leaves" should've told me something strange had happened. Nothing makes sense about this album, from the lyrics to the organization of melodies. Everything is random, and although there is a stab for an artistic, fantastical uniqueness...this cd doesn't arrive at that destination. And honestly, it's just plain weird. "Weird" is emphasized. The only positive point I have for my girl Cibelle's album would be "Esplendor," a back-to-basics bossa nova standard. Save your money, rent it from the library. If you're a huge fan of her, you'll probably buy it anyway, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I on the other hand, wholeheartedly recommend Cibelle's debut album, titled "Cibelle" and retro 70's style soundtrack "City of God."

4 out of 5 stars Só Sei Viver no Samba.......2006-02-20

I heard "So Sei Viver no Samba" (track N. 2) for the first time in the film "The Constant Gardener" and I just fell in love with the song. Cibelle's voice is beautiful and quite soothing. My only complaint is the poor quality of the recording of the disc in general, but specially my favorite track (N. 2). I listen the same track over and over again and just don't get tired of it, but the poor quality of the recording of the solo guitar spoils the whole experience.

5 out of 5 stars Cibelle Leads the Next Wave of Brazilian Talent.......2005-02-09

Brazilian singer Cibelle seems destined for international stardom given the rising interest in both samba and bossa nova over the past five years. It is difficult to predict the ebb point of musical trends, but Cibelle's robust talent should withstand any potential audience saturation . Everything she sings has oozes the samba sensibility, but her jazz aptitude, and the fact that she sings in both Portuguese and English are certain to broaden her appeal. As it happens, Cibelle may reach audiences in the United States through the back door. There's a chance that Cibelle will be discovered by the growing audience for unique female jazz stylists in the States. Cibelle seems destined the same concert hall audiences of her worthy musical peers like, Nora Jones, Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux. More than Jones, Krall or Peyroux, Cibelle is a natural singer who can carry most any song on her strength of her voice. While Krall and Peyroux rely on heavily on other people's music, Cibelle songwriting is of the same caliber as Nora Jones's compositions with collaborator Jesse Harris.

Cibelle is part of the emerging wave of both veteran and newer Brazilian artists like Suba, Babel Gilberto, Bossacucanova, Trio Mocotó, and Celso Fonseca who are beginning to build a recognition factor in the United States, the last bastion of ethnocentric musical tastes. Brazilian music has been on the radar on the East and West coasts since the mid Eighties but has yet to bloom into a full blown Renaissance as it did in the Sixties when a generation of jazz musicians like Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and Herbie Mann brought the sounds of Brazilian jazz to North America.

Many of the newer Brazlians have redefined the samba and bossa nova framework with bottom heavy mixes, programmed beats, tape loops, ambient tricks and a hip hop aesthetic. Cibelle, embraces the new technology but refrains from over-powering the beauty of her music with studio gimmickry. She seems destined for international stardom, but American audiences have often given a chilly reception to many worthy world/fusion musicians. Cibelle's 2003 self titled debut is a great showcase of a singer that deserves a higher profile in North America.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Years..........2005-01-05

This album has been in the rotation for 3 years now. It's one of those albums that fits into several "mood music categories"/
1. Chill out music- for decompression
2. Cocktail music- Martini's and Manhattans
3. Summer evening house party music- running around in wet bating suits in the dark.
Cibelle is a goddess!

Updated 3/2006-
We were watching The Constant Gardener on DVD last night and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that a cut from this album was playing in the background at an outdoor cocktail party scene. It wasn't played as soundtrack it was part of the scene in the film. Anyway, I originally said this was a good album for drinking and being outside in warm weather. Well, I sort of said that.
It's still a great album. I only hope her next one is as good.

5 out of 5 stars Like No Other.......2004-11-17

Cibelle's unexpectedly modern Brazilian style is unbeatable: she sings all the songs, she wrote or co-wrote the entire disc, and she blends Latin jazz with electronica, samba, and Brazilian flavor.  Cibelle sounds like no Brazilian ever heard before: her styles are impossible to strictly define and flow seamlessly between categories.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful voice and new Brazilian talent!!.......2004-09-28

With a beautiful, clear yet sultry voice of greater range than Bebel Gilberto, this is an astounding debut album. She deserves the same plaudits here in the USA that we've seen go to ALicia Keys and Norah Jones. Every cut on this album is an inventive, fresh, compelling Brazilian "new" sound, mixing in just the right amount "live" with electronic. WIth a single exception, "Hate." This could be deleted with no loss to the album. It's a bit overdone and harsh. PS. the album is downloadable from services like Musicmatch.
