Taraf de Haïdouks

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
They are the consummate show band, highly skilled musicians with a flair for the theatric and a circuslike sense of timing. Romania's Taraf de Haïdouks have been one of the few Gypsy ensembles to represent their culture's folk music on the world stage, and with three albums to their credit, they have made a remarkable showing. This is a compilation of the three recordings they made in the '90s for the German Crammed Disc label. They are now on Nonesuch due to the personal fascination with the music shown by Kronos Quartet member David Harrington, who chose the songs for this self-titled release. Taraf de Haïdouks are a wondrous band, with a crew of brilliant violinists, singers, and cimbalom, flute, and accordion players who could break your heart one moment and leave you in laughter the next. The songs run the gamut: sweet love songs and paeans to broken hearts, subtle politics and social comments, and plenty of warp-speed dance tunes played with a ferocity that leaves their live audiences breathless. This is a great introduction to a band any fan of great musicianship on acoustic instruments should know. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Gipsy Music.......2007-07-17

You can say this is a great example of gipsy customs, pure gipsy music (This is not gipsy jazz).

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-07

I was skeptical at first but took the chance, and I'm glad I did. What a CD! Hora Ca La Ursari is agreeably best song on the CD. Not only am I going to buy the rest of Taraf De Haidouks' CDs but my friends are too! With a sound you can actually call music this CD is inspiring and fun. It makes you want to learn to play the fiddle, if you only had the time...

Buy it, don't think twice, there is no need. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The reality of Romany--thanks, Johnny Depp.......2006-11-30

No wonder Johnny Depp had these guys playing at The Viper Room--what a sound!

We were in Europe last summer and we encountered a band of gypsies in the French Metro. They sounded JUST LIKE THIS. The sound is authentic and can fit a variety of musical tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Music.......2005-10-11

I bought this CD after listening to the sample tracks. The musicianship is incredible, and the rhythm unstoppable!!! I am always on the lookout for new music like this. I belly dance, and I prefer the Gypsy rhythms that CD's like this one offer. I also like to pop this one into my car CD player and listen while I drive!

5 out of 5 stars I thought I'd heard it all.......2004-07-15

Amazing music! Not what I expected + not like anything else I've ever heard. These guys are up to something strange and powerful, and it's a treat to try to figure out what the hell it is.

Sally Potter's film tells the tale of a young Jewish girl caught up in a maelstrom of artistic, emotional, and political conflicts on the eve of the Nazi occupation of France. The Man Who Cried is set against a disparate backdrop of Paris opera houses and rich Gypsy folk music, and Potter has assembled a diverse, compelling score with the help of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. Opera fans should note the presence of meteoric young star Salvatore Licitra, a tenor whose performances here (which include excerpts from Puccini's Tosca, Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, and Verdi's Il Trovatore) mark his recording debut. Giving that operatic sensibility its historical and ethnic context, Golijov's delicate pieces, performed by the Kronos Quartet, serve to balance the swirling Gypsy verve of the Taraf de Haïdouks ensemble. The resulting score gleefully turns the various clichés of "world music" on their heads, revealing new connections between Euro-folk and the classics as the disc showcases traditionalists and newcomers alike, introducing a bright new operatic star in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Cried.......2006-12-01

The music in this movie is so beautiful, it's almost haunting. I have watched the movie 4 times in the past 3 days and can hardly get enough of it. I was not a fan of Johnny Depp's until now. Salvatore Licitra's voice is incredibly beautiful. I can't say enough.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music--beautiful movie.......2006-11-03

Although this movie took some critical hits I was mesmerized by the music and the "silent" acting of Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. Their eyes expressed emotion that words would have made cumbersome. But back to the music CD: The blend of Russian gypsy music (thrilling) and Italian opera (though lip-synched)was thoroughly entertaining and moving. Very enjoyable but don't expect your friends to share your enthusiasm for it...

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful movie, beautiful music.......2004-01-06

This CD features the debut recording for Salvatore Licitra who proves to be a tenor to look out for in the future. Combined with the powerful voice of Licitra, this CD contains tracks of traditional roma (gypsy) music. Rent/buy the DVD/Video, watch the movie and then buy the CD - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Cried.......2002-05-02

Moving, versatile, deep and rich. Salvatore Licitra, will you marry me?

The Kronos Quartet, Iva, every artist named and unmentioned on this soundtrack will pull at your heart.

It's not necessary to have seen the movie to appreciate the soundtrack - it is as operatic as cinematic, as large as it is personal, as complex as it is simple.

This is one of the best recorded works I have heard in years, and my musical taste is broad. Spend the few dollars, add it to your collection, enrich your life, for it is short.

Christina

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping global musical landscape of love and passion..........2002-04-01

"The Man Who Cried" is one of the best soundtracks of the last few years. It is a flawless, spellbinding compilation of classical opera (Bizet, Verdi, Puccini, Purcell), Roma (Gypsy) music (Taraf de Haidouks), and original score ("Cesar's Song," "Close Your Eyes," "Without a Word." The Kronos Quartet performs the original score).

Tenor Salvatore Licitra in particular was a gem, this being his debut recording. His voice is tragically gorgeous on "E Lucevan le stelle," heroic and lighthearted on "Di quella pira," haunting on "Je crois entendre encore" (especially on the Yiddish version) and "Close Your Eyes," an achingly tender Yiddish lullaby that Suzie/Fegele's (Christina Ricci) father sings to her as a child in Russia.

Christina Ricci's singing voice is provided by Czech chanteuse Iva Bittova, whose sultry jazz stylings on "Gloomy Sunday" and childlike innocence on "Dido's Lament" combine to form a musical portrait that matches Suzie's (Christina Ricci's) screen image of a teenager teetering on the edge of adulthood, exploring her musical talent and blossoming sexuality. A pity that the final version of "Close Your Eyes" sung by Bittova wasn't included, but "The Man Who Cried" is a fantastic soundtrack that captures the tumultuous musical world of WWII Paris.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Romania's best-known music export, Taraf De Haidouks, returns with a live album that perfectly displays their ample talents. On tracks like "The Return of the Magic Horses," the playing is incendiary, accelerating almost to the speed of light, while the songs have their trademark, mournful gypsy quality. The album might share its title with a Jimi Hendrix record, but this is the real deal, bringing in enough guests from around the Balkan, including Macedonia's Kocani Orkestar Brass Band, to qualify as a joyous summit on modern Roma culture, and completely irresistible. Concert recordings aren't always successful, but this brings the atmosphere right into your living room--you can almost see the musicians smiling as they try to outpace each other, before launching into the kind of instrumental passage that seems beyond human ability--only to pull it off without breaking a sweat. Growing international success hasn't spoiled the band--they're still rooted in the village tradition. But when the fiddle bows scrape and the improvisations hit the stratosphere, the village becomes the world. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars THE REAL STUFF.......2007-07-15

Why didn't I come across this band before! I love eastern European music --klezmer, Ivo Papasov, Yuri Yanakov-- and I love kicking bands. Taraf de Haidouks definitely kicks! On "The Return of the Magic Horses," they start off at furious pace --violin, woodwinds, cymbalum, double bass and accordion-- and never flag, handing the lead from one instrument to another, over and over, without any hitch in the tempo and no letting up of intensity. The band plays simultaneously tight and loose in ensemble, separate instruments weaving their own lines around each other, following each other's lead but each one creating a niche of sound and melody. But it is the vocals that appeal to me most: the sweet romantic "Little Buds," the trading off of vocals in the marvelous "Absinthe I Drink You, Absinthe I Eat You," and in "Green Leaf, Cover Leaf" and "Sorrow, Only My Sorrow." When I listen to this magical recording it brings memories of my father-in-law singing around the house in Slovak. The musicianship of the members of this band, and their guests for the concerts, is exceptional. I am especially impressed by Neculae Neacsu's playfully pizzicato violin solos on the first and last cuts ("Dance of the Firemen" and "Back to Clewjani") and the lightning fast accordion playing of Ionel "Ionitsa" Manole ("A Gypsy Had a House," "A Stork Crosses the Danube..." and "Green Leaf, Cover Leaf"). The cymbalum, which I've considered a musical instrument designed by a committee --part percussion, part zither-- fits here!

This CD is great! It is nice to have a different cultural input!

5 out of 5 stars Bent bluegrass played by Cossacks on methamphetamine. .......2006-03-23

Closer to human speed than I recall on their eponymous 1999 CD, but still it generates a sense of bent bluegrass played by Cossacks on methamphetamine. Minor chords and ancient shadows have hooks in their souls, and they play like demons striving for the light. Remember to look for the strange attractor that offers an archetypal inner sstructure for the whirling, wild sparks of music. Focus of the calm center and let the whirling particles around it just fly right by. Live performance brings hints of Negresses Vertes. Stand-out: tr 13-Bride in a red dress (one instrument hands off to another, rotating a formidable pulse of power).

5 out of 5 stars Some of most amazing music and creative virtuostic musicians of our time!!!!!.......2005-09-29

If you haven't seen theese guys live yet you are missing some of the most inspiring and electrifing musicians of our time. Raw gypsy that will make any of your hairs stand up!
I hope they make more albums in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2003-10-16

I heard this CD playing at FNAC in Paris two years ago. I bought it and 'Chagrin Seulement' and 'Une Tsigane' are now always on my laptop (and therefor always where I am). These guys play great and sing greater. The rawness and elemental qualities of the music make this a must have CD in any international music collection

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The True Gypsey Kings.......2007-01-11

This is everything a music DVD should be: it leaves you with a complete sense of where this band have come from (deepest, poorest rural Romania); a feeling for the individual band members after hearing them talk in their own words (the one band member trying to remember the names of his nine children brings a smile to your face); the jaw-dropping musicianship; their life on the road (lost-looking at first to being cocky by the London gig); etc,etc......... But above all, it is the jaw-dropping musicianship. Travelling around the world with Taraf (with the help of this DVD) is highly recommended. The only down side is the celebrity endorsement by the omipresent Brad Pitt (nice, but the rest of the DVD is so damned good, you don't need it).
Well shot and edited, and with a bonus live CD - near perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Every house should have one (or two).......2007-01-06

This is a biased review, as I am a Taraf de Haidouks fan. Bulk of the DVD is a live concert in Union Chappel in London which is of course excellent, one cannot imagine this band giving a less than unbelievable performance. There are commentaries, mainly by Johny Depp, nice and enthusiastic, but after seeing them 20 times I found them unnecessary. Lots of good extras, a bit of background of Taraf members.Part of a concert (and rehearsal) in Bucharest, where the "Band Gypsies" CD was recorded. A must for a Taraf de Haidouks fan, and who heard them and is not? Great for astounding your musical and unmusical friends, as they definitely never seen or heard anything like it!

holy cow. this package is a real treat. for $15 you get a full concert cd, plus a full FULL dvd, with them in concert, interviews with fans, documentary, and more.

and yes, they are jawdroppingly amazing. even moreso to actually get to watch them!

5 out of 5 stars The Taraf like you've never seen them before!.......2006-05-03

What a fabulous CD!! Listening to a Taraf cd is one thing, but to actually see them perform is a transcendental experience. The jaw-dropping virtuosity and presence of the Taraf make this cd truly enchanting and a must have for any gypsy music fan.
Highly Recommended.

Those wanting to dig deeper into Gypsy lore will find in this acclaimed outfit something far removed from the image of flamenco and the Gypsy Kings. Taraf de Haidouks all come from the Rom Gypsy village of Clejani in Romania, but they have played all over Europe to enthusiastic and discerning audiences. Theirs is a rollicking, frayed at the edges, and sometimes raucous melange of Romanian, Turkish, and Medieval roots, played on battered violins, accordian, cymbalom, clarinet, and double bass. The untrained virtuosity is astounding and remarkable in careening, klezmer-like dance numbers as well as their sultry, impassioned love songs and ancient ballads. Joined by ursari from the neighboring village of Mirsa, this is ground-level music from a resilient, outcaste people living the toughest existence imaginable, reflected in the beautifully photographed faces and places contained in the excellent sleevenotes. --Derek Rath

The fact that you are even viewing details of this wonderful Haidouks record indicates that you are a decent, sensitive human being with a longing to connect to the Beautiful via choice musics. Buy this album with your next order and find yourself a week or so later with something wonderful that you can share with other humans like yourself.

DUMBALA DUMBA is slow train into the Gypsy night that begins when you disembark on a lonely Romanian lane. A dog barks in the background and an old man tells a child a story which begins a call and response of the first order - the nature of this sort of music is to lose oneself within the ancient village that secretly we suspect life should really be like; the title track is a heady fun passionate exercise in Music and the rest of the album is just magic. Words fail me.

      4 out of 5 stars A Romanian girl.......2005-11-16

I always loved gipsy music and unfortunately it's not easy to come by a good recording. This is true Romanian gipsy music it's almost funny to listen to the gipsy accent but the recoding is not that great.

This is genuine and living gypsy music at its best.Taraf de Haidouks have their own style which implies harmonies, speed and passion. The first track is without doubt one of the best compositions. If you want a Taraf de Haidouks recording to begin with this could be your choice.
