Sons of Somerled [Enhanced]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Sons of Somerled features the sonic treat of densely layered synthetic instrumentation shot through with heavy-duty vocal emoting, recalling both fellow Scotsman Dougie MacClean and the ballads of English pop star Phil Collins. Romantic in its notions of nationalism, war, and history, Sons of Somerled recalls man's love affair with the sea, the bluster and pride of the likes of Braveheart, and the all-consuming quest for the eternal soul mate. Such heady aspirations coupled with dreamy musical accompaniment speak to an audience hungry for the bittersweet passion of life writ by the unseen hand of fate. --Paige La Grone

Product Description

Album of the Year Winner! ... "The musical equivalent to Braveheart" (Billboard Magazine) Steve McDonald's celtic contemporary music soars with cinematic tales of Scottish history. Enhanced CD includes musical video. No Clan exercised such a powerful influence in early Highland history as the Macdonalds. Somerled emerged early in the 12th Century as a leader to expel the Vikings from Southwest Scotland. His marriage to a Norse princess made him a formidable adversary to the Scottish king. Somerled's grandson, Donald, became the founder of "Clan Donald" - literally the "children of Donald" - giving his descendants and followers the name Macdonald or "son of Donald".

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Celtic Music.......2007-01-10

This is Steve McDonald's best effort. It sounds very traditional and his use of the drum is awesome. Worth listening to over and over4 again.

5 out of 5 stars I had me Kilt on with a single malt in me hand.......2005-12-01

Back about 4 years ago, my cousin from Wyoming had heard this in a coffee shop, bought it and mailed it to me. The same week another friend had heard it, and gave me a copy. Apparently they thought I'd like it.

I DID!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely piece of History.......2005-08-24

Steve McDonald captures the feeling, the history, and the pride of our Scottish Ancestry. For a wonderful reminder of what national patriotism is all about, even here in the states, this is the music to bring the best of who we, and our ancestors were together.

5 out of 5 stars Angels Sing in Scotland for the World.......2005-05-21

This is CD "Sons of Sumerled" is the first works of Steve McDonald I have listened to. I read here on Amazon he has other works. I was in a Mall store that specializes in crystal work, and this most beautiful music was playing, so I hung around, trying to find a loved one a crystal Angel. After three songs, I had to ask who is this. Lucky for me, they are playing and selling this wonderful work of beauty.....

After three songs, I bought two, on a gamble the rest of the CD would be good. One for me, and one for an Angel of a women half way around the globe.

When I got home, and was wondered what I just bought (and if I just wasted money), I listened.

I am so blown away...... Maybe I live in a cave, but for me, this is the most beautiful music I have ever had the pleasure of being a human being on this earth that has the gift of hearing (ref: Moive: Children of a Lessor God). I have had music that has given me goose bumps before, and yes, this gave me plenty.... But I have never shed a tear before, not until now. To Steve McDonald, it is so nice to hear Angels sing. Steve McDonald, I have no idea if or how good your other work may be, but this one has captured me. It is just that simple......... BTW...I'm afraid to listen to any of you other work, for how could you top this?

Album Description

New Zealander McDonald, best known for sweeping electronic works long on spacy anthems and short on engaging ideas, here turns in a rousing, splendid Scottish set that manages to make even the warhorses ('Loch Lomond,' 'Scotland the Brave') sound fairly exciting. Rife with bagpipes, big arrangements and stirring vocal turns, the album is likely to cause much swelling of chest in those with Scottish ancestry and much delight in those who simply like Celtic, Irish and Scottish music. The CD has an Enhanced CD section with a video, an interview, album credits, lyrics and photographs. Originally released in 1996. ZYX.

5 out of 5 stars I have worn this CD out!.......2004-12-09

Deep rythmic songs that carry carry both a message and sound that is vast and deep. The vocals are great! This is not the violin folk music you are used to....It is on a much grander scale. Friends who would never try this CD now own it after listening to mine.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Is Very Impressive.......2004-06-30

I was first introduced to Steve McDonald via this album. It is an excellent collection of songs that can draw forth many emotions. This album is probaly the best out of this series. He has 3 other albums that follow in the same vein, Stone of Destiny, Highland Farewell, and Legend. Each of those albums is Excellent, but they are all very different. I think that this album is still the best, even after listening to the other 3 cds many Many times over, I keep on comming back to this album. I don't think that there is even one song that I don't care for, I can't say that about the other albums, Well, yes I guess I can, but for some reason, this album is still my favorite collection of Steve McDonald songs. Get this album and let yourself be taken away on a journey through a Celtic soul.

4 out of 5 stars "Modern" Celtic?.......2002-08-05

Few things raise a heated debate quicker than what is "Celtic" music in a modern context. Steve McDonald successfully, IMHO, fuses the traditional celtic with a more modern beat. I am not a huge fan of the traditional celtic folk music, but I like it well enough. Sons of Sommerled is an extrememly popular album with a number of my friends, even those who are staunch "don't mess with tradition" type of celtic fans. I had this album in cassette, now's my chance to get the CD.
