Branco is one of the younger divas of Portuguese fado, a mournfully sexy tradition born among Lisbon's low-class waterfront dives. Like the blues, Greek rebetika, Brazilian samba and Argentine tango, it was once considered marginal at best. But international interest grew and the style was gradually rehabilitated, losing its outsider status but none of its delirium-inducing beauty. Like the late Amalia Rodrigues, Branco is gifted with an alto of crystalline purity. Her voice has pliable, wood-dove like overtones; she is the essence of wrong-headed passion and wounded vulnerability. For this outing, Branco and her guitarist/music director/husband, Custódio Castelo, have assembled a mixed program, wherein classic fados exist side-by-side with a tune by the brilliant Brazilian songwriter, Chico Buarque. Castelo has also composed music to lyrics by bossa nova legend Vinicius de Moraes, Luiz Vaz de Camoens, a medieval Portuguese poet and even a luscious translation of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 136. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cd of fado........2007-06-29

You love fado?
Well this is the cd for you, you will listen a great and different version of the song of Chico Barque, o meu amor hte music is composed by Custòdio Castelo, the lyrics are from Camoes, Shakespeare,De Andrade, V. De Morais.
Do you need more?

5 out of 5 stars Carressingly Beautiful.......2005-11-10

Cristina Branco departs somewhat from her more traditional Fado-based repertoire and style on this gorgeous CD. The instrumentation of Portugese and Spanish guitars (viola and guitarra) has not changed; yet an intiguing harpsichord-like effect is achieved at times. One track features piano but Cristina has used that before. Her passionate interpretation and beautiful singing are everything her fans have come to expect, and more. If ever a woman made love with her voice, Cristina does so here. Although I do not understand Portugese, I love the sound of the language, and it's hard not to with such a songstress. The harmonic progressions and song structures are not typical Fado, but bear some resemblances to general European popular music instead. Purists may be dismayed. However, if you are an adventurous listener who seeks sensuous and moving world music, you will not be disappointed by "Sensus."

4 out of 5 stars Not a typical fadista.......2005-05-20

This album is different than other fados; I hesitate to call it fado at all. While the music definitely has its roots in fado, it is much more smooth and elegant than fado tends to be. It is a beautiful album, but don't expect the wild, expressive passion which generally characterizes this style. Her voice sounds classically trained, and the lyrics are extremely sensual. The background guitars and piano almost create a counterpoint melody and reaffirm the smooth, elegant feel. There is not much variation in the album; everything is sensual, graceful, and very low-key. Her voice is lovely, but not much more.

2 out of 5 stars unimpressive.......2005-04-07

This album is fado diluted by "adult contemporary" musical drivel. A dissatisfying cocktail, indeed. I suggest sticking with Mariza.

5 out of 5 stars A valentine for grown-ups.......2003-07-10

Cristina Branco was already my favorite of the new wave of Portuguese singers taking up the Amalia Rodrigues torch and this CD is in many ways her best. As in her previous CDs the instrumentation is limited to guitars and a here, a piano. There is a broader range of styles of songs including a sultry Chico Buarque number among others. What I find most gratifying is the lyrics that are the bases for the songs: erotic, poetic, smart. I don't know of anyone doing material like this in English and that's a pity--Booty call and ho's got old a long time ago. If you don't understand Portuguese this CD is worth the bucks for the music; if you can follow the language, treat yourself to a sensual valentine with this one.

4 out of 5 stars soundtrack to hell.......2007-06-21

I first heard this in the later half of the 90's while in an art gallery called Dark's Art Parlor, where I had a piece on display. The sound of this masterpiece fit the art on display in such a way that I was forever changed by the Gregorian like sounds mixed with an Industrial quality. Gothic seems to be the wrong lable for this music. Gothic seems Middle Ages or Victorian, but this work is older(sonically). It has the feel of the early Dark Ages, like it was written during the time Pope Gregory had comissioned the ever famous, Greorian Chants.
I supose it is the Acient Overtones of an oldfashoned Latin Mass that drew me into this sonic experience. The Gallery that played this as background music displayed art that is of the dark side of human nature, devils, monsters, torchure chambers and inquision scenes filled the visual space, and Ordo Equitam Solis was the escencial ingredient to creating a subtle athmosphereic haze, that was enough to cause goosebumps on the flesh of the most seasoned horror fan.
if you want a better idea of what you will hear from them, try playing Gregorian Monk Chants and Tibetian Monk Chants simoultainously. The blend of Hevenly idealism mixied with the barbarity of human reality at it's most viscious, causes one to float "Beyond Good and Evil", into a realm where you are in charge of your own morality, all rules become nonesence, and one becomes his own god(in the LaVeyian sence).
    This is Religion for Athiests.

anyone looking for an excellent industrial techo eastern album with tong of psychodelic elements and beats with lotz of bpm changes this is for you. simular to laszlo's hyro album. im more into the dub oriented stuff that gayan is famous for, and this contains all the same eastern recipe but just a bit too fast for me. but this is one of my favorite group even and they have been aroung scense 1979, check out website and other works. full review from el-horto web site
The Sangeet Novus Sensus has been composed for a socio-ethno musicologist coming from the Eridanus constellation 200 years later to our Earth. This demo was produced in 1995-1996 in the former East-Europe as a reflection of the sociological experience having obtained in the late 20th century.
It's technological basis have been a PCM morphology using up the old FFT spectrum-analysis as an algorhythm controller and a virtual overtone-synthesis software developed by me. Here appears the music as a physiological sôma (szleg) and seems to be one of the potential acoustical solutions of abbandonment from the earthly reality and of the generating the social-Möbius consciousness based on my computer mêmesis technology.
The modular goa-electronics, the matrix topologie of tablâ-mêms, synthesised carcinogen PCM sequences, the Hindusthân style of the astral-hallucinogen orchestration or the polyphonic application of the analyzed interstellar noise spectrum samples or the geometric fractal loops induced by Zipi programming and the Pythagorean methodology of the sound mixing - all have spun a mêmetic cobweb around the average phosphorescent acid-consciousness having been grow in consequence of the alienation trend in this century, so the Sangeet Novus Sensus appears as a refined "prâna of transociete" of the millenium.
Later on when the humanoid consciousness transplanted into networks and the human race settled down into the stratosphear of Jupiter - in those days the original frequency algorhythms of the music being converted into laser needle impulse were plugged in the synapse of the human neuron outcome and they were stimulated by thousands of 3D-16 Hz BPM impulse/minute - began a new area of the music history and the hidden meaning of Sangeet Novus Sensus became as an ethnological nightmare of the past.
