Peace and Power: The Best of Joanne Shenandoah

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Sung in her native Iroquois tongue, Joanne Shenandoah's music is like a lullaby with a touch of pain and longing lingering beneath the surface. Sometimes called the Native American Enya, Shenandoah actually has a deeper, more powerful voice than the Irish thrush. Her songs are like Native haiku, short fragments that build in their own poetic arc, sharing an innate musicality not unlike Irish Gaelic. Although Shenandoah has several recordings in a more conventional folk-singer vein, Peace & Power draws from her four most evocative, atmospheric albums: Matriarch, Orenda, Peacemaker's Journey and Lifeblood. Both pianist Peter Kater, who produced Lifeblood, and Tom Wasinger, producer of the other three, successfully frame Shenandoah's simple songs in detailed arrangements. Wasinger, in particular, creates an ethereal chamber music ensemble, with guitars, Middle Eastern zithers, Armenian duduks, citterns, and African kalimbas. The CD comes with an extensive autobiographical booklet detailing Shenandoah's life journey and her pride in her Native heritage, though there's not much information about the music itself. And it would be interesting, in this retrospective context, to hear how she has taken her tradition and extended it into new musical terrain. But at least the aural evidence is on the CD. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars A great blessed voice.......2007-01-26

This is the first CD that I buy of Joanne Shenandoah. It was I great surprise not just for the quality of the production but for the unique sweet voice Joanne has to sing this king of songs. To those who are looking for new experience into this kind of music it is high recommended.

5 out of 5 stars New to Joanne Shenandoah.......2006-03-19

I am new to Joanne Shanandoah. So I wanted to get a good "example" of her music. By reading other reviews on Amazon I decided to buy this specific CD. I loved it. The songs are very powerful and her voice is divine. I wanted to start my collection of Joanne with music on her native tongue. And that is one of the reasons I purchased this CD. Now I want to buy a CD where she sings in English.

5 out of 5 stars She takes your breath away!.......2005-05-03

I was lucky enough to see Joanne Shenandoah at the Indian Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI last year. She took my breath away. My friend bought this CD and we just took a trip up to the North Woods this weekend and listened to it. WOW! It is so beautiful! Each and every song is a beautiful melody to your ears and soul. I loved listening to it so much I'm buying my own copy (along with a couple of other CD's by Joanne) from Amazon today.

If you ever get a chance to see this beautiful woman sing in person-GO AND SEE HER! She shares her tradition and family on stage along with her lovely music.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing..........2005-01-29

Buy it -- you need it! This is music flows through the mind in powerfully smooth waves, evocative of the same quiet power I found in Timecode's 'Indigo.' In America, where achieving perverted levels of noise is a sacred goal, artists like Shenandoah take us away and set us in the chasmal spaces of peace.

After listening to this newest CD I now realize why I love Joanne's music. From the first time I heard her music and how it compelled me to talk the storeowner into selling me the demonstration CD, the only one he had, convincing him that I had to have it now. Then I went to search out and find all of her existing music to add to my collection. It is not hard to understand why she has won so many accolades and awards. This newest album is a weaving of her past magic into a new medicine bundle of music. Listening to the healing that comes forth only makes me yearn for what comes next.
