Les Retrouvailles [Enhanced] [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become a sought-after composer, not only for his soundtrack work, but in his own right. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen's deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. THis is his 2005 album featuring guest vocalists Liz Frazier, Jane Birkin, Stuart Stapple & Dominique A. Virgin.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular........2007-05-05

The moment I discovered Yann Tiersen to be the composer of the Amelie soundtrack I rushed out and bought more of his albums. He is amazing and talented to say the least. I highly recommend this album. It is absolutely beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff!.......2007-02-18

Although I love Tiersen's work, I don' think this is his best. I bought the cd mainly for the song "La Boulange" (fantastic tune!), but the other songs are so-so.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-10-05

I love this music, I cant even describe it. It is out of this world.
If you liked his soundtrack of the move Amelie, you are going to love this one, it is a little more contemporary and more diverse. Its great.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2006-09-19

This is the best album I have ever bought - period. If you enjoyed the Amelie soundtrack, you will enjoy this album even more. I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy listening to this album. This is a album worth every music collector's collection.

5 out of 5 stars This album deserves 6 out of 5 stars.......2006-01-19

I can't even describe to you how great this cd is. It is simply spectacular/amazing. After hearing the soundtrack to Goodbye Lenin, I was quite disappointed. I thought that Amelie might have been the peak of Yann's career but I was very wrong. Les Retrouvailles is 120568x's better than Amelie. I definitely recommend it, especially track three...wonderfully mezzmerizing. It puts you right on the banks of the Siene looking up at the effiel tower. I am so grateful to have found this incredible music. Thanks again Yann!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Yann's work yet - Les Retrouvailles shows development and refinement, yet losing none of Yann's originality..........2005-07-21

As I am the first to review this album, I believe I have the opportunity to do so thoroughly, and without the bother of having to repeat the other user's opinions over and over again. Therefore, I will do it justice.

First of all, I would like to say that I am no musician, no reviewer, and most definitely no critic - I am simply a layman with the talent for seeing the beauty within the music, if there is any - and within Yann's work, whether Les Retrouvailles, or any other of his albums, there is indeed great beauty.

Yann's earlier works are powerful because of their evocative power - their ability to be strong and emotionally charged, yet without the burrarum of huge sound - simply by being simple. His originality, it seems, is based on the fact that one can create an impression on the listener without resorting to an orchestra - he uses one, two, or a small band to create the equal emotional impact that an orchestra at its might could do... instrumental pieces like "Sur Le Fil" and "L'Absente" come to mind. Therefore, originality and unique and powerful use of single instruments (occasionally with vocals) marks the beauty within Yann's earlier work. However, with Les Retrouvailles, we begin to see the development Yann has undertaken in order to improve and refine his music, though wonderful it is even before.

With Les Retrouvailles, we see a softening of sound, less harsh, keening, and poignant sounds reverberating through the work - it is as though Yann exchanged the power of a single instrument for the more effective and refined sounds of a well coordinated and organized flow of the ensemble. In personal opinion, this change was most excellent - Yann only gained in impact, and smoothed and refined his music without it losing any emotion.

Some songs, especially the vocals, such as "Secret Place", and "Le Jour De L'Ouverture" begin sounding more pop-style than anything we have heard from Yann before, yet immediately about twenty seconds into the track, the songs turn into finely cultured and orchestrated sounds that so symbolize Yann's work. On the topic of vocals, I believe Yann made some excellent choices to the improvement of all his works - especially "Le Jour De L'Ouverture", where the voices overlap in gentle harmony, creating poignancy stronger than ever, and in "Plus D'Hiver" and "Kala", where the performers voice beautifully correlates with the song itself. Of all the vocals on the track, "Le Jour De L'Ouverture" would be the most favourite, as the two performers' voices overlap in beautiful harmony.

In the works like "Loin Des Villes" and "La Veillee" and "Les Retrouvailles" we see a use of instruments in a better combination than in the music of Yann's previous compositions, as mentioned before - the songs all flow much more smoothly, repetitive yet slowly building up in harmony, and eventually, through a much more smoother effect than usually. Of the three mentioned, "Loin Des Villes" would be by far the most personally preferred choice - the gentle build-up of the music with the cheery yet slightly melancholy undertone sound make it a pleasure to listen to.

Yann's trademark piano singles are found in "Le Matin" and "La Plage", which are as different from each other as possibly can be. "Le Matin" is a gentle melody, correspondent to the symbol of the morning it represents; it is gentle, flowing, and soft, with either a definite sadness or nostalgia touching upon each keynote. "Le Plage", on the other hand, is a much darker piece, reminiscent of "Le Valse D'Amelie (Piano Version)" in the fact that it is sad yet unfailing and full of hope, whatever the matter may be. "Le Plage" is the preferred one here.

In "7:PM", we see how Yann can mix originality with classics - the first keening notes of the violin, then the Vivaldi-like sharp beginning, and then again the strong and powerful and vibrant passage similar to that of the ending of "Sur Le Fil" - altogether, the only solo piano piece of the CD has its value, especially for those who had not yet heard "Sur Le Fil".

"La Jetee", "La Boulange", and "Les Enfants" all are powerful, quick, and many-instrumental pieces - all benefit from the rapid tempo Yann set for them - especially "La Boulange", where the use of electric guitar and violin in the beginning part of the song is the most excellent combination of modern and original Yann has used so far on this CD. Altogether, "La Boulange" would have to be my preference - simply because it is in my view better than "La Jetee", and I just do not understand "Les Enfants" - though Yann purposefully uses the image of children playing on musical instruments to stimulate the response to the song.

As I have stated before, I am no critic, just a person who loves Yann's music, and listens to it daily with great ardour. Indeed, it is difficult to find a musician who is talented in combining traditional sounds and use of instruments with the long set sounds of the classical use - in fact, Yann and Michael Nyman are the only ones I know. Whereas, in comparison, Nyman has much greater experience with the orchestra and their coordinated use, I believe Yann benefits from this inexperience, in developing his own style himself, instead of falling into the standards all the others have set. Les Retrouvailles shows a development, refinement, yet a resolution to keep his own style within all his works, which is poignantly profound throughout all the tracks of the CD. Yann Tiersen, to me, is one of the few people who can manage to fire up the fantasy, stir the senses, and emboss the emotions as powerfully and uniquely as he does.

      1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-09-30

This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!

        Album Description

Yann Tiersen is one of the poets of the French music scene, and his profile has risen steadily since his work on the soundtrack of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's unforgettable tale of innocence and love that was Amélie. Here we have 2 CDs - his latest, Les Retrouvailles (2005) and Black Sessions (1999) - together in a clamshell box. Les Retrouvailles features Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and Jane Birkin on vocals. Black Session was a pre-Amelie live album. Virgin. 2005.
