Gilbert Becaud, known to his French admirers as Monsieur 100,000 Volts, began his career by writing songs for others to sing. Endowed with a smooth baritone voice, however, he soon became an impressive performer of his own sophisticated lyrics. Becaud has also written more serious music, such as his cantata L'Enfant è l'Etoile, and several film scores, which have received a warm welcome from European audiences. Becaud's vocal style is instantly recognizable, but his most distinct quality is his ability to sustain a mood. Moreover, he is a man of many moods, sometimes changing them within a single song. All of the great chansonnette singers learned from one another, and Becaud clearly learned from Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel, although he sounds more like Yves Montand. No one is more convincing while delivering a song. In short, Becaud is an elegant man of the theater who sings his lines rather than reading them. He has recorded dozens of songs, and this best-of CD necessarily omits some of them. I bought my first album mid fifties in Brussels where I grew up. Since then he has remained my all time favorite french singer song writer. I have most all vinyl 33's and am replacing little by little with the cd version. Gilbert Becaud is the man!

To resume GILBERT BÉCAUD in one single cd is nearly impossible,but that collection gives it a valiant try.Over the years,GILBERT has use the talents of three lyrics writers(AMADE,DELANOE and VIDALIN)because he is mostly a composer.Each of these lyrics writers have done well with him,and VIDALIN was certainly the most gifted(MADEMOISELLE LISE,LES P'TITES MAM'SELLES,LA VENTE AUX ENCHERES),and there are many others like LES TANTES JEANNE,ROSY AND JOHN that you can find in other greatest hits cds.For AMERICANS,BÉCAUD is the FRENCH composer who wrote LET IT BE ME and WHAT NOW MY LOVE.There is a lot more than that because he has done hundred of songs.Amazingly,his originals LPS are still not available on cd;this is a mystery to me.

Gilbert Becaud is a classic in France, believe me, I'm french. Although he first started singing during my parents youth, he is still on air. His songs are remade by young singers, they are classicals. enjoy the energy of the man who is called Mister 100 000 Volts. that's a lot!

Percussion, accordion, cheesy synths, and Khaled's wail: these are Khaled's rougher, funkier recordings from the 1980s before Don Was et al. smoothed them out for worldwide consumption. A number of these tunes are his original recording which turn up again with the rough edges smoothed on later more broadly targeted disks"Serbi Serbi" and "Chaba Bent Bladi' [N'ssi N'ssi], "El Harba Wine" [Kenza], "Haya Ya" [Sahra]. If you have enjoyed Khaled's work over the past decade, check out its roots.

More than half of this chronological Greatest Hits collection is devoted to Hardy's hits of the early-mid 60s. It then shifts abruptly to the 80s, ignoring Hardy's enormous output from the late 60s to mid-70s; naturally, the change in style is also abrupt. Although there can't be much argument with the chosen tracks, the cd running time could easily have incorporated several more songs more fairly representative of a career overview. In short, an unsatisfactory compilation that also neglects to include any liner notes.

a great presentation of frehel through the 30's, in full command of her art, world weary and yearning at the same time......what a voice ....and such charming material, played admirably by some really ebullient orchestras supporting the singer.........this is a warm and heartbreaking recording of the spirit of a people unaware of the coming war ........the sound engineers have done a fine job in the quality of these transfers ...

Fréhel - the most authentic french realist singer ever.......2007-01-09

This is a classic. Most of all the recordings (there wasn't many at the time, especially for her who had a chaotic and tragic life)of her lifetime are on this record. What can I say it's a jewel, a great piece of archive for anyone interested in that era, realist singers, and wholehearted artists. Don't hesitate, this is a magnificient testimony.

MAURICE CHEVALIER once said about FREHEL:her voice seems to come from her belly.She was introduced in showbussiness by CAROLINE OTERO who send her to an editor of music.At age 18,she started to record a few songs before disappearing for many years because of drug and booze dependencies.When she returned in FRANCE,a few years after the first world war,she established herself as a realistic singer with a good range.This 2 cds collection is really the best of her repertoire.What makes FREHEL unique is that she was a singer who sang stuff that definies her own life.From COMME UN MOINEAU(one instantly thinks of PIAF) to SOUS LES PONTS,from TEL QU'IL EST to LA JAVA BLEUE we clearly can recognizes that unimitable voice who can switch from gaiety to sadness.Unfortunately,as years went by,the personnel problems continued and she ended up broke and appearing older and fatter.Still,FREHEL has earned her place in the panthéon of FRENCH singers of her time.She deserves to be remembered well.
