5 out of 5 stars The motherlode.......2004-07-08

Billy Connolly describes his first time ever seeing the Dubliners in concert as a classic case of culture shock! Folk Musicians back then were inclined to wear Aran sweaters so they could be easily identified..not the Dubliners! "Wild bearded goats" with one of their lead singers voice sounding like coal being poured down a delivery chute! The Dubliners did to Folk Music in Ireland what Bob Dylan did in the USA. They were raw, vulgar, unpretentious, talented, funny and, the inspiration for legions of future Irish musicians. The tracks listed on this collection are essentially the best of their original line up. My only slight criticism is that I wish they had kept the track order of the first three albums intact. As musicians, Luke Kelly, Barney MacKenna and Ciarron Bourke were of the highest calibre. This music swerves from incendary to sad and back again. This is what the Pogues sounded like in another life!

When the Bishop of Cork tried to ban the Dubliners from his city in 1967 because he objected to their risqué ballad "Seven Drunken Nights," it had the unintended effect of turning the group into underground heroes and the song into a top 10 hit in England. The Dubliners proved to be more than one-hit wonders, however, and their blend of raucous barroom vocals with traditional instruments such as fiddle, mandolin, tin whistle, and tenor banjo was revolutionary, serving as an inspiration to bands like De Danann and the Pogues, among many others. The 16 songs on The Best of the Dubliners were recorded in 1967 and 1968, and practically all of them, from Luke Kelly's stirring take on the rebel classic "The Rising of the Moon" to Ronnie Drew's lament about "The Pub with No Beer"--which he sings in an unbelievably raw, croaking voice--are now considered classics of the ballad tradition. The Best of the Dubliners captures the band at its bawdy, brawling, boozy, and altogether glorious peak. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Classic Irish music..........2002-04-13

This was my introduction to the Dubliners...and what an introduction it was! This compilation covers the band's two LPs for Epic, "A Drop of the Hard Stuff" (1967) and "More of the Hard Stuff" (1968). As soon as I heard "Seven Drunken Nights," I knew I had heard it before (as performed by Steeleye Span, the song was entitled "Four Nights Drunk" and performed in an old-timey style); it is truly one of the best, funniest Irish pub songs out there ("Ah, ye're drunk, ye're drunk, ye silly ould fool! Still ye cannot see..."), and Ronnie Drew's rough voice is the perfect voice for singing it. He reminds me of nothing so much as an Irish Tom Waits, who could easily do the arrangement of "The Old Triangle" that is included on this CD.

Luke Kelly sings on most of the tracks here, a powerful, passionate voice that gets across all the hope, power and glory of songs like "A Nation Once Again," "Muirsheen Durkin'" and Ewan MacColl's "I'm a Free-Born Man." All the more shame that he passed away in 1984 of cancer. The late Ciaran Bourke, also an original member, lends his lead vocals to "Drink it Up, Men." All in all, not a wasted track on this whole disc, and those wishing to explore further should also check out the double set "The Transatlantic Anthology."

The Dubs are the real thing. Not the new age vanilla Irish music, but raucous pub and patriot songs that will stir any Irish heart. You should buy it, and get some Guiness to enjoy with it.

    4 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2004-12-23

I remember going to parties with my mum & da as a weein' and after a few drinks, the old folks would break out into a sing-a-long. They sang all the rebel and old folk tunes they grew up with and lived by, not missing a beat nor a word.I recall being taken by the participation of all, regardless of their ability and tone deafedness. There was no shame, only pride. After accessig this website my foot is aching, due to the no stop toe tapping of memories that have allowed me to enjoy my heritage....Thank You Kieran Heaney- Picton- Ontario- Canada

5 out of 5 stars If love the music, you will love this CD.......2000-09-17

I first heard these songs at college, when my friend made me a tape (before MP3s) of the Dubliners. I very nearly wore that tape out. These songs are without a doubt among their best, and Luke Kelly's voice is really unmatched in traditional Irish music. The Chieftains sound like smarmy, studio-bred charlatans next to the musicianship and energy in these recordings. The Celtic Connection, Young Dubliners, or Black 47 don't even bear comparison. "Will You Come to the Bower", "The Orange Flute", "Foggy Dew" and "Roddy McCorley" are more than worth the cost of the CD. The only thing I can think to say against this disc is that the quality of the recording did not win the studio techs any awards, though Luke Kelly's voice would only have suffered from overdubbing and remastering. He sounds like a drunk, he was a drunk, he sings about drinking. Give this to anyone who thinks Ireland is all shamrocks, Guinness, and little green men - the depth and power of some of the old reels is extremely affecting. Anyone who likes the Pogues will also be happily surprised by this disc.

        .......2006-03-17

The Best is indeed the very best of collections. Wonderful songs wonderfully sung by the best group on Irish singers ever. If you love Irish music you must own this CD set.

1 out of 5 stars Buy a CD with more of their original work, instead of this one........2006-01-04

I own 7 Dubliners CDs, and I'm always looking for more tunes to add to the collection. This CD included many that I did not have, so I was really excited. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed once I listened to this 3-CD set. This is DEFINITELY NOT "the best" of The Dubliners. Highlights include:

-Every slow song they ever recorded, put into this collection.
        -Nearly complete lack of instrumentals
-Bulk of songs performed later in The Dubliner's career; lacking original members
-The very few old original recordings/tunes included, are poorly recorded live versions
-Includes very, very little of their hits, and well-known songs

That best sums up this CD collection. It really makes me sad to think that this CD set is the most popular CD bought here at amazon.com. It sickens me, actually. Please, please, PLEASE, if you want to buy a Dubliners CD set, choose either "Original Dubliners [Import]" or "The Best of the Original Dubliners [Box set] [Import]", which have 56 and 54 songs respectively. They include all their famous original tunes, recorded in the 60s. These are the songs you want. From the breathtaking instrumentals, to the sing-along pub songs, those two CDs have them all. Not this so-called "Best of" you are considering buying.

So please do yourself a favor, and DO NOT BUY THIS CD SET. Buy one with their original work. You'll be happy that you did.

5 out of 5 stars Best cd for the money you will ever get........2005-05-04

I must admit I was a bit sceptical when I saw the price for this three cd set. Yet in the back of my mind I was thinking, "Just imagine if is actually good!" When I got the cd I was not disapointed. The songs are simply amazing in this set, and the mixture of live and studeo songs is excellent. Love songs, ballads, drinking songs, poems, its all here. Where else can you get 54 excellent Irish songs for 11 bucks? Nowhere! BUY THIS CD

5 out of 5 stars Not a compilation at all ...........2005-05-04

This 'Best of' is in fact three individual albums: Wild Irish Rovers, Ireland's Prodigal Sons and Seven Drunken Nights. (You can buy one of these for nearly the cost of all three and also look up reviews of the individual albums). So there are no fillers or 'B' tracks here, nothing that you will feel the need to 'fast forward' if it crops up on the mp3 player. The qality on all the albums is excellent - even the live recordings - with a vibrant quality I find lacking in some of the other 'collections'. An excellent place to start if you have never come across the Dubliners or just want a 'single' albums. Some sons are steeped in history and the content - though not the music - will be lost on some but most - like the hilarious Seven Drunken Nights (live and they can only do 5 verses!) will not be.
