A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations.

This is by far the best Tito Puente Complation I have ever heard. It captures the Master Timbalero at his prime. The remastered CD is awsome and never sounded better. It is a must for Tito Puente Fans
Good one.......2005-08-31
I don't have this album but hearded it on winamp the musics are very good in fact it has the best musics of winamps latin arquives. My favorite is the first track even knowing winamp does not put the number of the tracks it's easy to know because the melodies can not variate so much in one track and one track does not durates more than one hour. However it's worth buying it.

when is it classic and when is it stale?.......2007-04-05
I didn't enjoy this cd as much as I expected. Guess it's all in the ears of the reviewer. I had heard too much like it before and it wasn't strong enough as a classic to hold my interest.
great compilation.......2006-11-08
this CD is a compilation of Tito Puente's music, mostly recorded in the 50's and early 60's. Every selection is a winner, and if you are just getting started listening to Tito Puente's music, this is a good jumping off point. However, please note: this is not a CD of strictly "mambo" or "salsa" music, there are other selections here that do not fit that category, although all of the tunes are Latin in flavor.
Should be better known.......2006-06-16
I had the pleasure of attending a Tito Puente concert a few years before his death. The man loved what he was doing and his concert was full of joyous, dancable music. Salsa is more popular now than when Puente started his career so you would think that more people would be interested in his music. This is the type of cd to listen in the background or to just dance non stop. Too bad more people will not have the joy of listening to his live concerts.
A great first Tito Puente album.......2004-04-10
Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.
Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.
Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.
A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.
A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King!

Slow down.........2006-05-03
Looking at the others reviews I sincerely think you were too much generous or you don't know the music of Tito. I bought this CD and I was desapointed for the lack of energy authenticity by the quality of the arrangements.
This is not a bad CD but the oldies are FAR BETTER.
Fun dance collection.......2006-02-25
This collection is a lot of fun percussion with typical Latin mambo beats. It's got enough variety to keep you interested but it's still pretty easy listening. A fun addition to anyone's dance collection.
El Rey Del Timbales.......2005-08-24
The name fitted him perfectly. No one has ever and will ever record music the way he did. His style was one of a kind. Many may copy him, but they will never match him. This album is truly wonderful. Latin jazz is wrapped up with him. He makes you want to just get up and dance!

One of the best Tito Puente CDs available.......2001-05-17
This is easily one of the best Tito Puente CDs availabe. A compilation of some of Tito's best songs, these versions inspire awe and intense dancing. In addition, the notes by Joe Conzo succinctly detail Puente's life from the beginning of his musical career (or at least by the time Tito was 13 ... ), Tito's influences, playing with Machito, to the Navy in WWII, to the Palladium era and beyond.
Even just the mention of the infamous and influential Palladium establishes the authenticity of the biography, the music and the album. Within the New York Mambo scene, abundant reference is still made to the Palladium, both to the music and the dancing (which cannot exist without each other). Conzo notes that "Ran Kan Kan" was first recorded in 1949 -- a fact that many of the people 'in the know' today are not familiar with.
This CD is so good that for a while, it was the first thing I wanted to hear in the morning and the last music I wanted to hear at night. Don't miss this one!
Thanks go first and foremost to the creators and second to those who chronicle the music, the musicians and the culture. The growth in this art achieved by the next generation will only be possible because they learned from you.

The original title of Tito Puente's final album was Por Fin --"Finally"--a reference to the fact that Puente and fellow Latin-jazz titan Eddie Palmieri never had recorded together, despite Puente's work with pianist Palmieri's brother Charlie early in their careers. Obra Maestra--"Masterpiece"--however, is an equally apt description for this set of a dozen mostly uptempo performances recorded shortly before Puente's death in May of this year. While engaging in the infectious dance rhythms and perfectly calibrated, often blaring, ensemble horn statements you'd expect, the group also revels in the many shades of subtlety inherent in the arrangements. Two medleys of mariachis and boleros are especially fine-tuned, and it's gratifying also to hear the rest of the players make room for Palmieri's immaculately off-kilter solo on "Marchando Bien." Puente himself is as sizzling as ever, although he seems content to throw in his lot with the rhythm section, basking once more in the glorious sound. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Masterpiece indeed.......2002-12-06
It is dangerous to use a word such as "masterpiece", for it easealy could be abused. The use in this case is more than justified. This is a historical recording musicaly, in its lyrics and arraingments. A must have CD!
Not exactly a masterpiece.......2002-10-24
The sound sounded like it was too polished. I did not like the arangements. It contains an interesting mariachi-salsa popular song(La negra). I don't think this was his best most refulgent recording. A good cd but I would not give it 5 stars. In my opinion his last live recording under his name was 5 stars. Eddie Palmieri was not even on the cd. Ok, he was but it seemed like it. Michael Stuart surprised me with that bolero. excellent voice!. All in all a good cd to have in a collection.
Tito & Eddie combined ... It doesn't get better than this .........2002-06-10
In an album that makes justice to it's title, the two "maestros" waited much too long to give us such a vibrant, masterpice recording. The collaboration of latin legends Oscar de Leon (vocals in Mariachi Meddley and Paris Mambo), Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez (singing Marchando Bien) and Paquito D' Rivera as well as the frantic melodic arranges by Puente, Palmieri and Ray Santos make this CD a "must have" for all latin jazz & salsa lovers. Unfortunately, Mr Puente did not live to see this album hit the stands ...
Obra Maestra.......2002-01-16
This is really a wonderful album. If you're a true aficionado, you'll get right up and start to dance. If you're not, you may soon become one. There are some truly spectacular tunes here. Enjoy!
Often Brilliant, occasionally mundane.......2001-11-18
I have to admit that i've just recently come to the world of Salsa and Latin Jazz in particular. So I must admit that I may not be the best critic of these two legendary artists or this compilation in particular.
But I have to say that the revelation has been utterly joyous. Salsa music is just absolutely phenomenal. Check out spinner.com : The Salsa station and be reborn.
This collaboration is quite satisfying but does at times disappoint. The majority of the cuts are up tempo (flavorful) and infectious. You'd be hard pressed not to tap either your hands or your feet during most of it. But there are a few tracks that are uninspiring but certainly tolerable.
I would offer though that I have heard other material from both artists that is absolutely phenomenal. So you can't really go wrong here. Buy it!

Calidad musical y originalidad absoluta!.......2007-07-27

Simply THE BEST latin Jazz!.......2003-09-13
This is undoubtedly a classic! The quintet that cannot be repeated -unfortunately- was at its best, with Mongo and Willie, probably the best combination in latin percussion,at the peak of their form. Any conga/timbales player's GOT TO HAVE this CD...the conga and timbal solos are unsurpassed. It is a "now" sound, recorded in the late fifties! - simply the quintessence of Latin Jazz -with capital letters.
Cal Tjader- "Latino".......2000-05-22
This is definitely one of Tjader's hottest albums recorded during his "golden era" with the Fantasy Label. It features an all-star cast with Mongo Santamaria, Vince Guaraldi, Rolando Lozano, Eddie Cano, Jose"Chombo"Silva, Willie Bobo, Paul Horn, Al McKibbon, Victor Venegas, Tony Terran, Lonie Hewitt, Eddie Coleman, etc. Experience jazz favorites like "Night In Tunisia", "Cuban Fantasy","Mambo Terrifico","Key Largo","The Continental", etc. One of the Tjader/Fantasy afro-cuban jass timeless classics!

In the history of recorded music, there are a few albums that define a genre. Among them are Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Miles Davis's hypnotic Kind of Blue. In that select realm, timbalero Tito Puente's 1957 Top Percussion is the most influential Latin jazz recording of all time. Simply put, this date is a once-in-a-lifetime summit meeting of Cuban and Puerto Rican master percussionists of Afro-Cuban music: Mongo Santamaria, Franciso Aguabella, Willie Bobo, and Julito Collazo. Together, these masters explore the endless folkloric inventions and dimensions of Cuba's complex drum music-- from the Afrocentric bembe/Santeria syncopations of "Eleguara" and "Obatala Yeza" to the clave-coded "Mon Ti," "Four by Two," and "Conga Alegre." The "hit" is the cool cha-cha "Ti-Mon-Bo," named for Tito, Mongo, and Bobo. Like their African musical forefathers, Tito Puente and his compatriots have delivered an ancestral drum message that has danced and entranced musicians and listeners for years. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Not what you're thinking........2007-07-05
A lot of people have preconceptions about Afro-Cuban music and what it should sound like. This CD will correct this. The bulk of this CD is no polished studio product. No, when I listen to this CD, aside from a few tracks, I feel as though these musicians have existed for hundreds of years, and one day a studio sort of seemed to be built around them, and they just sort of shrugged as they played as they have always played.
In some ways, the raw nature of this CD is very appealing. As I have said, it is definitely REAL. At times however, it can get old. The majority of the tracks consist of a vocal leader doing call and response with other singers as percussion rhythms fill the surrounding musical space. Often times there are so many instruments, and the recording technology so primitive, that the music often becomes a mess of indistinguishable racket where the listener can barely pick out the Downbeat. I feel as though some of the tracks with more diverse orchestration would be top notch if we could properly hear what each instrument is doing.
My favorite tracks of this album are those at the end. There, the most care is taken to preserve each instrument's personality.
If you're Latino or African and want to know more about your roots, listen to this CD. If you're a drummer or percussionist and want to hear some rhythms you don't encounter in the typical Western musical tradition, listen to this CD. If you like Ricky Martin, leave this CD alone.
A Gotta Get!!!.......2007-03-23
Recorded in 1957, this is truly an unbelievable record, and a wonderful introduction to both Latin percussion and the Afro/Cuban folkloric tradition. Though Puerto Rican by birth, Tito was an initiate to the Cuban Santeria religion, and in this album he pays homage to the spiritual and musical roots of the Mambo and Cha Cha styles for which he became most famous. Tito, Mongo, Willie Bobo, Julito Collazo, etc., all play at an unsurpassed level of virtuosity and creativity, maintaining a dizzying array of poly-rhythms that provide a virtual catalog of the West African rhythms that filtered through Cuba to become the Latin music we know and love today. As honest, beautiful, and interesting a record as any Tito Puente made. An absolute must for anyone with even the slightest interest in Latin music, drumming, Cuban culture and experience, Tito Puente, or even rhythm in general. Go get it!!!

Percussion Madness.......2006-06-28
The world's best latin-american percussionist- in full swing.......2003-03-07
In case anyone had any doubts -- at all -- that Tito could play the real, hardcore, pure Afro-Cuban percussion, then this album should settle that question. With Mongo Santamaria and several other percussion heavyweights on board, Tito pounds away on some of the toughest-sounding rhythm work imaginable. The second half of the album gets funkier and more slinky, with a subtle, jazzy bass added into the mix. This is a killer instrumental album, formidable and funky in every aspect. Recommended!
Unbelievable.......2003-02-06
A truly unbelievable record, and a wonderful introduction to both Latin percussion and the Afro/Cuban folkloric tradition.

Wave...........2003-06-06
I first heard the opening track of this CD on my local NPR station, and searched and searched to find it. Those who feel this doesn't show off India's remarkable vocal range and control, need only listen to that track. The rest of the album is icing on the cake. Listening to the give and take of this collaboration is exciting. Obviously, a seasoned, but dynamic performance by Tito, coupled with the fire of India's vocal treatment lends something to this set. Definitely worth the time if you are a fan of either of these artists.
best of India - best of Tito.......2002-05-23
This is the best album I heared of La India and also one of the best things of Tito. I would like to hear more of this kind of songs from La India. The salsa-stuff is a little bit booring, from the creative point of view, I think.
Great combination of India's voice and Tito's playing.......1999-07-26
I was a bit sceptical when i bought this record because i only knew india from her salsa work. But i have to say that is one of my best jazz-vocal records. The combination of India's voice the intenes playing of Tito Puente is just great. The selection of songs is very good ranging from romantic to dancing. Altogether a great record!
Excellent renditions of old classics from La India.......1999-02-02
Backed by the master of Latin jazz, La India outdoes herself with soulful renditions of old jazz classics. I'm 24 and the music has as much appeal to me as the more modern salsa of today. A must have!
This album is not great, but tolerable..........1998-12-25
"La India" has produced excellent songs in past albums--danceable and beautiful beats. However, I was disaapointed with this one. "Jazzin" definitely has a jazzy, upbeat appeal and features old jazz classics, but these "old-timers" do little, if any, justice to the soulful, powerful, and youthful voice of India. Tito Puente also delivers, but salsa music is where the both of them deliver best!

It has been 40 years since Tito's first Dancemania album captured the explosion of Latin sound from his band, who were then packing in the dancers at New York's Palladium. This live album recaptures that feel, using a bigger band than the original, but the same arrangements. The major difference is that this time the soloists have more space in which to stretch out, and they take full advantage of the opportunity. But at the same time, this is Latin jazz that never forgets it was made for dancing. The rhythms percolate and boil, the horns reach for the sky, and everybody just wants to mambo. Not many people get a chance to remake and remodel their past this way; even fewer could do it this well. --Chris Nickson

Finally.......2001-12-12
I was out of luck trying to find a live Tito set with good quality. Finally, this came along. Plays some of his more classic tunes, and they sound tight! Great vocalist Frankie Morales featured. Tito even turns out a solo on track 8 that will amaze you, especially since he's in his mid 70s and still jams better than most percussionists out there on timbales.
Tito Puente was the greatest of them all.......2001-10-31
It was about 1953, that I first heard of Tito Puente and his orchestra. It was in an LP with many other latin orchestras. In it there was a bolero "Si me dis ques' ce si" or something. Perhaps you have heard it! It was very very romantic. Tito Puente was the percussionist and the vibes player. Vocalist was Vicentico Valdez.
Later, I studied civil engineering in Graz-Austria where Tito Puente, Perez Prado, Xavier Cugat, Noro Morales and all the great latin bands were practically unknown. I bought the LP "Cha Cha Cha for Lovers", a TICO recording, as well as two 45rpm's of RCA Victor.
After many years I started again listening to his evergreen music. His music reminds me of my youth.
Tito Puente was very popular in Greece, which he visited about three times.Unfortunately, I could not meet him and tell him that he had a very good friend without knowing it.
I was very sorry to hear that he died

Great live album by " El Rey Del Timbal".......2001-06-07
This is the first ever cd that I got of Tito Puente not having known who he was before I got this recording I'm sure glad my parents told me about his music. The reason the cd is so great is because it brings you back to the Palladium days music. With songs like Cua Cua, Mambo Inn and Lullaby Of Birdland to name a few. Plus featring Dave Valentin on flute on the song Flauta Y Timbal that is why I think this cd is worth your money. So if you are just getting into latin jazz or want something great to listen to then this cd is for you.
Tito-we will miss you.........2000-07-29
This is the last recording from Tito before he left us. It is everything you'd expect from a great Tito Puente recording, and live. Amazing new versions of older material, still true to the feel of the long-ago Palladium days. If you have even the slightest interest in Latin Jazz, or latin music in general, this is well worth your while. A guaranteed classic. Buy it and groove to the finest.
One of the best CDs of the year.......1999-12-18
This is an outstanding recording that shows that Puente is still a master. The arrangements are tight, the soloists sizzle, and every track makes one want to dance.
