5 out of 5 stars All the best song from Cirque du Soleil.......2007-02-19

You could listen to all the best songs from Cirque du Soleil! Even you never watch its shows, you will be attracted to buy the tickets once you listen it the songs!

5 out of 5 stars Cirque as always.......2006-03-10

Cirque always has the most magnificent musicians. Always outstanding! This cd takes some of the best from different programs and combines them into one experiance. It is a great compilation that has been done in the wonderfully unique Cirque way!

5 out of 5 stars Like a bowl of magical soup.......2005-12-25

This is NOT the full course dinner, but an opening course, a little tease for your taste buds, or in this case, your imagination. This is like magical soup where each spoonful is a different flavor and sometimes, well it is a combination of the otherworldly and the worldly. Sometimes it is just the right spice for that right moment. This is great music and deserves respect for the creativity that fueled its construction. Like any good chef, it is personal, quirky and eclectic. Enjoy! If you want the full course, go to a live production and be ready to be a glutton.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly "Le Best".......2005-12-06

I was going to give this 4 and a half stars, but I can't. Literally. Anyway, there are some great tracks on this CD. Even Alegria, where the singer sounded like she lost her voice. Some of the songs are on my iPod right now. But I wish they put more. This isn't enough. Do you have how much music you can load on a CD? Come on, Cirque, add more!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breathtaking Music.......2005-10-05

I didn't buy this cd off of Amazon, at a Borders Store actually. But anyway this cd is absolutely amazing with a 14 selection of absolutely breathtaking performances and compositions from the world renowned Performance Show known as Cirque Du Soleil. With spellbounding varieties of music on this cd from the show. It's an absolutely worthy CD to buy. Hands down--you'll love it! Just buy it and hear it for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Still inspiring.......2006-06-09

Even though the album isn't composed of the exact music from the show, it still gives you the same sense of awe that you experienced while watching the show. And much of the cd's music is based loosely on the music from the show, so you will recognise most of the tracks. I am especially delighted with this album because my favorite song from the show (that plays while one of the creatures is carrying the illuminated balloon) is featured in three of the tracks :)

If you REALLY want the exact music from the show, there is an exclusive soundtrack that includes these tracks plus six live recordings from the show (though it costs much more). I can't tell you where online to find it because Amazon will get angry, but I'm sure if you're determined you can find it. ;)

2 out of 5 stars Not as expected..........2005-12-06

I gave this two stars because I felt sorry for Violaine Corradi. This is definetely not the Corradi I was expecting. If you want to listen to his better works, listen to Dralion! Varekai is not what I expected from a Cirque CD. I'm very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not exaclty expected, but good nonetheless........2005-10-26

This CD is amazing.

Some people are angry that it doesn't have all of the tracks from the show, but none of the Cirque Du Soleil CDs do! This album was a departure from Cirque tradition, though, because it was the first CD to be released under the CIRQUE MUSIQUE label...they tried more the idea of the show, instead of the show itself. The CD and the show are two different entities, but they are both ones that I love very much!

5 out of 5 stars Varekai CD.......2005-08-15

Varekai is a Touring Show of Cirque du Soleil. It is a great show and the music hits your soul deeply. The lead female singer, Zara Tellander, hits great notes that reach out and go deeply into your soul. Cirque du Soleil always find singers who have great voices. Most songs are in an imaginary language. Trying to interpret one is difficult. Just let yourself go as you listen to it and let the music take your soul for a ride.

5 out of 5 stars Dear God there are some idiots on this earth..........2005-08-13

No, this is not the music from the live show, Varekai, but much of it is used somewhere throughout the show, perhaps in a slight variation or in different lengths. Regardless of whether or not it is the soundtrack to the show, it's still beautiful. If the people who claim to "love" the show actually knew anything about Cirque du Soleil Musique in general they would know that most of the show music they sell on CD is not an actual soundtrack. I know at least that the Quidam, Varekai, La Nouba, Alegria, and Dralion CDs are this way. But check the boutique at www.cirquedusoleil.com, because they have released new editions of some that contain bonus live tracks recorded directly from the shows. They also have a Mystere: LIVE CD that is the music from a live production of Mystere. For those of you that say that the singers on stage in Varekai and the singers on the CD are the same? I hate to inform you that had you watched the reality show Cirque du Soleil: Fire Within, you would also know that this is not true. Leading up to Varekai's opening night they had a male singer from somewhere in eastern Europe and they let him go relatively soon before the show debuted and replaced him with another. And if you knew anything about showbusiness in general you would know that even if the original on-stage male singer for Varekai had been the same as the singer on the CD, he's probably been replaced by now, as Varkai's been touring for a few years.

If Quebec-based Cirque Du Soleil has triumphed by shrewdly goosing international circus traditions and style with an American sense of theatrical scale and marketing flair, the adventurous musical scores of its dazzling productions have always been a crucial part of the mix. Returning from Cirque's 1999 production, Dralion, Italian-born, Canada-based composer Violaine Corradai informs this tale of fallen angel Icarus with a score that leans on a swirling mix of ethnic folk influences suffused with electronic rhythms, autumnal orchestral colors, choral flourishes, and snippets of ghostly, echoing narrative dialog. Her contemporary, neo-ambient bent has more in common with Bush and Björk than it does with Barnum and Bailey, informed by a spare, ethereal dramatic sense and dizzying multiculturalism that encompasses everything from Latin liturgy to moody Middle Eastern modalities and lively Gypsy influences. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Varekai, with more than 50 performers, is the 14th live production of the Cirque du Soleil & its first since 1999. Slipcase. BMG.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant work on its own.......2006-06-06

This is not the actual soundtrack for Varekai. It is, in fact, more of a conceptual album, probably what the artists practiced with before the actual music and musicians were finalized. I bought this CD three years ago, and it still remains one of my favorites. Having listened to it for so long, when I finally saw the show live, I was thrilled to be able to pick out the themes and melodies that remained in the actual show.

This CD is perfect for some relaxing background music. I personally listen to it when I'm writing, studying, or going to sleep. Like other Cirque soundtracks, it's a brilliant mix of cultural sounds, and it works amazingly. For any Cirque geeks, I would highly recommend this album. If you want some beautiful techno/trance/middle easternish music, this would be a great addition to your musical collection. If you're just looking for the show's soundtrack, then you probably won't enjoy it as much, but if you can afford both, I would go for it so you can listen and contrast the two.

1 out of 5 stars Surprised and disappointed.......2006-01-13

I was expecting to hear the music from the actual show; this is not what this cd is. It's alright in its own way, but not at all as enjoyable as the real music. True, there are some familiar tunes that have been rearranged, but on the whole, I'm rather disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars You people are so disillusioned........2006-01-05

If you're considering whether or not to purchase this album based on these comments, think again. True, you will not hear the exact music that you hear in the show, but what you will hear is a beautiful blend of music based off of tunes from the show. If you enjoyed songs from the DVD, these tunes will still be present in the album, however, they have been remade using different instruments and a variety of new implements, and they are absolutely beautiful. It has always been Cirque du Soleil's policy to make the music on their albums slightly different than that of the show, and I think that they did this wonderfully with the Varekai soundtrack. You can go watch the DVD or see the show if you want to hear that music, and trust me, I am a very, very avid Varekai lover. However, if you enjoyed the music of the actual show and you are looking for a continuation of the gorgeous sound of it, you should most definetly buy this album.
It was the Varekai soundtrack that I first heard and made me interested in the show, and I have never regretted listening to it once. Not only is it an absolutely stunning album with vocals from singers such as Matieu Lavoie and Zara Tellander, but it also has some of my all-time favorite Cirque songs, which is saying something!
Don't decide not to buy this CD simply because of some bitter people who don't understand music! You're missing out!

5 out of 5 stars This is a amazing CD.......2005-01-31

I first saw the show Varekai and fell in love with the music.

All the music on this CD is taken from the show. I also just saw La Nouba and that CD is wonderful as well!

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic journey along nomadic steps..........2004-09-02

I bought the Varekai CD, along with a bonus DVD, at the Varekai show and the following review is based on that album. No words can be used to describe this absolutely mesmerizing, culturally eclectic compilation of world tunes and nomadic melodies. Here, the intersection of different cultures can be highly creative and that is the idea behind Varekai - many cultures coming together to create something unforgetable and spectacular.

Written and directed by Dominic Champagne, Varekai is set in a magical and dark, but at the same time ultimately redeeming world at the heart of a volcano. A world in which there are all sorts of creatures, all of which have special abilities that appear as the show progresses. Some of them are sinister, some are beautiful and gracious, some are funny, and some are just plain goofy. Having seen the show certainly helps understand the music better, but I must admit it is powerful enough as it stands alone, too. Throughout the album, you will enjoy a wide span of feelings and moods - from the sensual, through the playful, to the mystical and remote. A piece of artistical collaboration you should definitely own!
