Makes a Scot proud.......2001-07-17

The cheapest 2-disc set I have ever purchased in my life. Very good quality, awesome songs. Scotland the Brave is played at least three times in some form or another. A lot of well-known favorites: Amazing Grace, Cockney Jocks, etc. I'm actually playing some songs from the discs at my wedding. Very upbeat, traditional bagpipe and drum music.

Pipes and Drums Potporri.......2001-03-03

These two CDs are a grab-bag selection of Scottish pipe band recordings going back over the years. Most of them are civilian bands which play in the competitonal style. While I'm not a big advocate of collections like this, prefering the original recordings if possible; many of these tracks are no longer available. Others may still be out there. At least the bands are listed and the tunes they play appear to be accurate as well. This is not often done with these types of potporri collections where bands and music are often just thrown together in slip-shod fashion. The last few tracks on the 2nd CD are interesting becasue they are the massed bands, pipes and drums of the Scottish Division. These selections are no longer available commercially. Buy this collection if you are a pipe band nut and just want a lot of good pipe music by different bands.

If you've ever been to Scotland or are a fan of the country/music, this will take you back and have you crying. It's very moving and melodic, yet uplifting. It's a wonderful CD.

Ach! T'were pipin' music I were wantin', not ELO does "Rebel Piper". I mean, disco bagpipes? Good lord. Yes, the cheap-hotel-lounge-rock-band backups were grim indeed; the full orchestra numbers weren't much better. In fact, the only reason I didn't give this one star was because a (very) few of the selections weren't TOO bad.

Unless you want Highland/Second-rate Hollywood fusion, then avoid this gobbler at all costs.

The tracks that are worth listening to on this CD are done far better on their more recent CD, "Parallel Tracks." Why they bothered with arranging the Titanic theme is beyond me... Not a bad CD, but they've done better.

This cd really added a bonus this past Christmas! With the soothing sound of bagpipes. From songs you know to original ballads. You can feel the warmth and time that was put into each song. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys bagpipes put to Christmas songs!

This CD is exactly what I expected it to be. The one thing that most surprised was the speed at which the it got to me. It arrived two days before I had even hoped for it to get to me.

On a fluke, I ran a search here on Amazon.com for a CD with "Christmas bagpipes", and this selection, "Highland Christmas", was the first returned match. After listening to the samples, I decided to order it. I have listened to it all the way through only once since it arrived in the mail today, but I'm going to have a hard time getting my other Christmas CDs back in the stereo! This CD is great! I cannot put into words what a great holiday disc this is. As another reviewer mentioned, if you like bagpipes, and you're a big Christmas fan, this disc is for you. Don't waste any more time - get yours!

Very unusual and very good.......2000-06-15

I played this as background music at my annual Christmas dinner for friends and it got lots of comments from people who generally would say nothing about music. It is extremely beautiful and so unusual to hear our favorite Christmas songs played on the pipes. I highly recommend this to anyone but especially to those who like something unusal played on the Bagpipes.

Christmas Bagpipes!.......2000-03-15

This is a great, quirky little CD. The very idea of Christmas carols on the Highland Pipes is bizarre, but Iain Mac Harg manages to pull it off very well. Each song starts with the familiar drone, and then a spritely little carol appears. The songs are quick paced and fun, with a few traditional pieces thrown in for balance. If you like Christmas carols, and you like Bagpipes, then I highly recommend this CD.

I think this set is wonderful. from my own personal point of view, there are much worse bagpipe sets out there. I know and love this type of music, but this tops all my other bagpipe CDs.
It really brings out the meaning and feel of Scottish music.
It was worth my money, and if you like this type of music, this is right for you.

This album is simply awful. I was looking for some scottish vibes but I really don't want to be listening to this terible screechy music. It is painful to my ears, and I strongly recommend that you NOT buy it. Instead, If you want something irish, try LOREENA MCKENNITT. (...).

I just received this CD in a two box set and am so diappointed by it that I am returning it immediately. The first expectation I would have is that music today should at the very least be recorded in stereo, a format as old as I am. Read other neagtive reviews as well before buying this CD.

Fabulous CD!!.......2003-03-01

I'd have to say but # 2 (Battle On The Tyne) is a very short song. My favorites are Battle on The Tyne and Scotland The Brave.This is a magnificent bagpipe set. I've never heard any bagpipe songs this good and great. If your a bagpipe lover you have to get this CD.

This not the real Gordon Highlanders.......2001-03-03

This recording has been around for a while. Whoever the group is they are not the true Gordon Highlanders. The regimental band, drums and pipes of the 1st battalion Gordon Highlanders were indeed fine bands and they recorded numerous times over the years. Sadly, the 1st battalion the Gordon Highlanders were amalgamated in 1994 with the 1st battalion the Queens Own Highlanders to form the 1st battalion The Highlanders (Seaforths, Camerons and Gordons) Such is the unfortunate reality of Britain downsizing her army. The group that performs here are certainly not the true Gordon Highlanders. They are some civilian group from somewhere, most likely the States, who have assumed the name of the Gordon Highlanders without their true talent. This CD is also cheaply made with very poor notes. The selections are also poorly done on the liner notes. This is all around a sloppy job. Buy this CD only if you are not seriously into Scottish pipes or military band music and just don't care about who plays it and what they are playing. Otherwise, chose one of the better known British army pipe bands such as the Black Watch, Scots Guards, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards etc. The real Gordon Highlanders also recorded a CD before disbandment back in 1994. It is a most excellent CD and is available on the Bandleader label.

First of all it's "piobaireachd" not "Pio Braireachd". Second it's "The Conundrum" not "The Conund Rum" I guess whoever transposed the titles for the CD sleave didn't understand this. The Cd is overall Okay but go get "Royal Scots Dragoons -- Highland Cathedral" or "Simon Fraser University pipe band -- Live from Canage Hall" if you really need to hear good piping music.

this cd had potential but the quality is so poor that the money spend on this cd should go to something else.

Scots Guards on Display.......2001-02-25

This is a very good recent recording of the pipes and drums of the 1st battalion, the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards were the first Scots unit to tour the States in 1955, and thus made a very big impression. They were the main word in piping over here before the Black Watch took over the show! The Scots Guards have toured many times since, but unfortunately it has been a while since they have done so. Thats why its good to see a new CD by the pipes and drums which have also not recorded in a while. Under Pipe Major Macdonald, the band sounds very impressive. The playing is sharpe, and the selection of tunes is very good. The medleys are well arranged and played as only a top army pipe band can do. The listener might find it interesting to compare how the band sounds today with the older sounding recordings which are available here as well. Here one can discern that the style of playing has changed over the years. The older rope tension drums have been replaced by the newer Premier drums, which produce a very sharpe and less deep tone. Purists like myself prefer the older sound, as it is more martial in nature. The modern drums are almost jazzy, and do not belong in an army pipe band in my opinion. In years past the Scots Guards use to have two battalions, thus there were two pipe bands, which when combined produced an impressive sound. Today only the 1st battalion remains. Again, the older recordings will give the listener that opportunity to hear the massed pipes of the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards also use the standard double three beat intro for the drums in this CD, instead of the longer single five beat drum roll which normally introduces the pipes in the Scots Guards and Guards regiments as a whole. Its odd that they would do this, almost as if the style of playing was intended to be civilian-like for this CD, instead of more army style playing. Still, this is a most excellent CD which the discerning pipe listener should enjoy. The CD notes on the band and current Pipe major are also good. Recommended.

Great Practice CD!.......2001-03-10

This CD really does have some great things for individual practice -- rhythms and tempi. Those other people don't know what they were talking about.

Another disappointment.......1999-01-31

Apparently the company "LaserLight Digital" that produced this CD (and another Bagpipe selection offered here) has decided to invest more in the CD cover than the audio equipment. Poor quality. Avoid.

Fine selection of tunes but not one of the better CDs........1998-06-16

Unfortunately, the tune selection is good but the listening quality is not. I had to turn my CD player way up to get any kind of depth. The lack of clarity alone causes me not to reach for this CD. There are other CDs available with more talent and clarity. Too bad, because there were some good traditional tunes on the CD.
