This time out, the French diva's husky voice sounds far more lived-in, mature, passionate, and vehement than ever before. It's safe to say that her previous albums only gave an inkling of her true capabilities. Yes, the arrangements are frequently overblown and bombastic; that hasn't changed but somehow it doesn't matter because this singer has finally come into her own. Like her glamorous predecessors, Damia and Edith Piaf (the context may be different but the baton has been claimed), she has an uncanny ability to flatten the listener with vulnerability, to attract by going too far, to make sophistication appear naive and born of the moment. Perhaps this is part of her native culture's flair for rendering artifice so seductive that it becomes an end in itself, but it's also true that few cabaret traditions can approach how the French describe the raw, heedless depths of sexual obsession. --Christina Roden
Thank you
When I received this cd, I eagerly started playing song #4: "La nuit est mauve," because another reviewer said it was their personal favorite (in fact, it was this reviewer that ultimately made me buy the album). You were right: this song is definitely addictive. It is haunting and insidious and has that sense of building up without the listener even realizing it, a trait that I love so much in Kaas' music. Here are some other impressions:
#1: "Ou sont les hommes:" I didn't like this song at first, but it grew on me, as all of Kaas' music does. Now, I get totally engrossed in this song.
#2: "L'Abbe Caillou:" another reviewer really liked this song, and so do I. Another song where there seems to be a tug-of-war between building up and regularity in tempo. It wants to rock, yet wants to be sedate.
#8: "Je t'aime, je ne t'aime plus:" this song was written in part by Etienne Roda-Gil, a longtime writer for Julien Clerc, the best male French singer. The results are impressive for Kaas' music as well. I hope Roda-Gil continues to contribute to her music.
#9: "C'est la faute a la vie:" this song is fun, lively, and refreshing as a cool spring rain...like frankincense provoking an oblivious wind! It competes with #15 as my favorite song!
#14: "Peut-etre que peut-etre:" a great song, notibly in the middle and the end, where the music makes this sound as if you're being whirled away into oblivion. You'll understand when you listen to it!
#15: "Une question de temps:" I reluctantly declare this my favorite song on the album, although I can't give it the same metaphors as I gave #9. This song is great because it has a tempo that carefully ascends, almost to the unawareness of the listener. The beginning of the song makes one think that it will be a slow song, but soon after one is surprised by this tempo. The music, as well as the vocals, are placed in the proper places, producing a calm and wild variation of passion and emotion, which is pure genius!
#16: "Je maudis:" this is a great song. A good driving song, I believe! Slow, but reluctant in its steadiness; but as I've said before, this is good!
Overall, this album is great, wonderful--and I declare Patricia Kaas to be the Queen of French music, the best female french singer we have today! If you don't like Patricia Kaas, you need major help! I will do all I can to make french music more popular in the United States! Thus concludes my review! :-)
This album, released in 2003, shows that Patricia has saved her best for last. The first time I heard it I was taken by the way she has effortlessly changed style. From lush arrangements and heavy production to a bare, stripped-down style. The songs, and her voice, are full of anguish and longing. One doesn't need to understand the French language thoroughly to realise that this is an album of love and loss.
I can only but recommend this as being her best work, and the best new album I have heard in quite a few years.
