5 out of 5 stars Beauty, Passion and Madness.......2007-03-22

This CD is a bacchanalia. It is ecstatic and blissful and alien and sad and insane. There are so many worlds contained in this music that it's hard to describe. I have to say I've loved this CD for more than a decade and it has been a source of constant agony and joy and ecstasy. It doesn't age. It is a classic. There are so many nuances in it, so much fantasy, madness, passion and creativity that it is truly one of a kind. Each song produces a peculiar state of mind. I don't know how else to describe this experience. I'd say my favorite experiences are Mirki, Vai Vedrai, Querer (awesome!) and Valsapena. Please buy it and take the time to listen ... REALLY listen to it and experience it.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Journey To A World Of Joy And Wonder.......2005-07-09

Alegria means happiness in Spanish, and that't exactly what this CD delivers, a good dose of happiness and a nice escape route from the pre-packaged wasteland of FM radio in the 21st Century. Having bought the CD several years ago, I could hardly wait to compare the listening experience to the live performance that I saw earlier today, and I must admit, the CD was an excellent primer for the show.

The most likable characteristic was the way the vocals in the live show matched the vocals on the CD.

Listening to Alegria makes you feel as if you've entered a fantasy land full of benign and carefree elves, goblins, and other wondrous mischievous misfit creatures whose only job is to take you to the edge of enjoyment and to let you define what your own limits are. And while the visual effects of the live show are mesmerizing, they would be useless without this powerful sound track, which is worth listening to on its own merits.

The songs are all built on melancholy keys, with the arrangements designed to tug at your emotions and create a feeling of Bohemia and old Europe. And despite the expectations of anyone who has ever seen a Cirque show, they deliver just the right dosage of fantasy and escapism with enough versatility to favor a nice drive, a quiet evening at home, or background music for a good book or even working on a project.

My favorite song on the CD is Vai Vedrai, which is a trademark Cirque song, with the haunting vocal adding to the sentimental gipsy lament that it seems to be broadcasting.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good alternative listen, wants to share music with the entire family, or is interested in the Cirque du Soleil phenomenon. Also recommended is a visit to any live performance by this troop, as well as any other of their CD, or DVD/VHS products. They truly deliver the goods.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2005-06-09

I saw "Alegria" when it came to my area, and the show took my breath away. I have seen both "O" and "Dralion," and heard samplings of other Cirque shows, but "Alegria" has perhaps the most upbeat songs on it. Favorites include the title track, 'Vai Vedrai,' and 'Querer.'

Definitely worth your money, and it provides very ecclectic listening/mood music.

3 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!.......2005-01-11

Despite the interesting and colorful jacket, the music is very disappointing. Most of the music sounds the same. This would not be a CD that I would recommend to others.

5 out of 5 stars All the best song from Cirque du Soleil.......2007-02-19

You could listen to all the best songs from Cirque du Soleil! Even you never watch its shows, you will be attracted to buy the tickets once you listen it the songs!

5 out of 5 stars Cirque as always.......2006-03-10

Cirque always has the most magnificent musicians. Always outstanding! This cd takes some of the best from different programs and combines them into one experiance. It is a great compilation that has been done in the wonderfully unique Cirque way!

5 out of 5 stars Like a bowl of magical soup.......2005-12-25

This is NOT the full course dinner, but an opening course, a little tease for your taste buds, or in this case, your imagination. This is like magical soup where each spoonful is a different flavor and sometimes, well it is a combination of the otherworldly and the worldly. Sometimes it is just the right spice for that right moment. This is great music and deserves respect for the creativity that fueled its construction. Like any good chef, it is personal, quirky and eclectic. Enjoy! If you want the full course, go to a live production and be ready to be a glutton.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly "Le Best".......2005-12-06

I was going to give this 4 and a half stars, but I can't. Literally. Anyway, there are some great tracks on this CD. Even Alegria, where the singer sounded like she lost her voice. Some of the songs are on my iPod right now. But I wish they put more. This isn't enough. Do you have how much music you can load on a CD? Come on, Cirque, add more!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breathtaking Music.......2005-10-05

I didn't buy this cd off of Amazon, at a Borders Store actually. But anyway this cd is absolutely amazing with a 14 selection of absolutely breathtaking performances and compositions from the world renowned Performance Show known as Cirque Du Soleil. With spellbounding varieties of music on this cd from the show. It's an absolutely worthy CD to buy. Hands down--you'll love it! Just buy it and hear it for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Has lived in my player for weeks!.......2007-07-09

This is one of the better Cirque titles. Typically, Cirque de Soleil will produce excellent quality music, and I have not been disappointed yet. But for some reason, this disc stays in my CD player. I find the vocals on Alegria to be captivating, and maybe that's why I have been listening to it time and again.

4 out of 5 stars Title Tune is Reason Enough to Buy Alegria.......2007-05-15

It's OK to read the other reviews. I more or less agree -- depending on the review. What I don't think is emphasized enough, though, is just how special the title tune, "Alegria" is. Francesca's style and this great sentimental tune have a great synergy. You may love eggnog and you may like a nice oily aromatic nutmeg. Put the two together and you now can add that item to your list of something that's just too good. It's not an exact analogy, though. Francesa's voice is not the nutmeg or the eggnog; neither is the tune. Yes, synergy is all I'm getting at. But my "nutmeg and eggnog" makes that somewhat dry notion of synergy more palpable. And THAT is what Alegria is like: palpable. The first exposure to this song and you will find it quite beautiful. So much so that I thought it was Bel Canto singing style. Maybe, but probably not. But like someone who is truly a good person as well as a person you love, you love this song more when you see how repeated exposure can still bring such delight. Of course anything can be overdone. So there are a couple of other good tunes and plenty of atmospheric sounds on the CD. But when you do go back to Alegria again, you will again find it such a special song. It is like there is a profundity to be found in its sentimentality. I can't say I know of any other song like that. Songs are substantive in fun (like the Unicorn, or Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream Album) or substantive in joy or substantive in sadness (plenty of those!), but I don't believe I have ever come to believe in profundity in a song because it was dripping with sentimentality. Incidentally, the CD has excellent sound quality. So why not 5 stars? I guess I feel I've been doing "star inflation" -- especially on music. Or maybe it was the super Egmont overture by Beethoven I recently listened to. Talk about profundity! (Yeppers, I've reviewed several Egmont recordings; have a look.) Anyway, the title tune is so very special: it is a beguiling mix of profundity, sentimentality and Francesca's unusual voice. It's an almost addictive synergy (like nutmeg and eggnog).

4 out of 5 stars some fun, eh?.......2006-10-06

Hey, can you imagine, a musical review inspired by anti-histamines? Way cool! Those Quebecois think of everything!

5 out of 5 stars Must buy.......2006-10-02

If you want to experience how music control your emotion, you must buy this CD

5 out of 5 stars Experience The Passion.......2006-07-10

If you are not familiar with the rising cult status of Cirque du Soleil, you may not understand the passion and dedication those who have seen a performance give to these productions. By far, this is the most passionate "I've Lost Love on European Streets in the Autumn Rain" songs you will ever encounter, and make for some intense love-making sessions. Highly recommended, this is a necessity for any contemporary musician's collection. "Alegria: There is a spark of life shining... Alegria: I hear a young minstrel sing... Alegria: There is a love in me waiting... Alegria: A joyous, magical feeling." Experience the passion. Flow with the emotions in the months that follow.

5 out of 5 stars Music like this is hard to come by.......2002-10-29

I don't normally write reviews for CD's. I usually stick to books, however, I have to make an exception for Cirque Du Soliel.

My dance teacher had first used the song Mystere for one of her performances and ever since then, I have been hooked on their music. I'm sad to see Rene Dupere leave Cirque. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many other musicians and composers, Rene is one of the best living composers. This album is perhaps a collection of his greatest peices. It does have one piece from Benoit Jutras but in my opinion, it doesn't match quite the level that Rene's are at.

If you are interested in Cirque's music, I think this CD would be the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars A good album.......2001-06-01

This is a good way to start your Cirque Du Soleil music collection. Although it has some old music, it is still a good album.

3 out of 5 stars A smattering of Cirque.......2001-05-01

Cirque de Soleil's colelction is in affect a best of CD, but it is hardly that. Certainly the pieces on this disc are the most memorable of each show, they seem to lack something. this is because Cirque de Soleil is an experience, each song on an album influences another, they must be listened to in order to truly experience them. The songs on this album aren't bad, in fact, they are excellent, but they aren't quite as good as if one were to purchase the albums tehy are taken from and listen to the whole album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Cirque du Soleil ~ Fantastique, Mysterious, Addictive.... ~.......2000-11-18

I bought this CD just last night. When I was little, I remember seeing Le Cirque Reinvente on television. I loved it so - the music, the performances - but I didn't know it's name, what it was called. I forgot about it for a time, seeing snippets of it whenever I just barely caught the end credits while surfing the channels. Forgot about it again and then the yearning to hear that distant yet familiar music came back and I did some research, finally discovering what the show was after so many years: Cirque du Soleil! The rest is history - I got hooked instantly and this is my first CD of the music. I wanted to know what the music was like before I bought it so I listened to sound samples from Amazon of the CDs and then decided to buy Collection at my music store. I listened to it last night, am listening to it now as I write this and here are my detailed impressions... You put the CD in and relax... The first sounds are those of a solitary basoon over " Ouveture " from the excellent "Le Cirque Reinvente." The drums pick up and it turns into a majestic melody of strength, dignity, and lingering of what's to come; it gave me spine tingles the moment I heard it! " Egypte " begins, seducingly quiet and calm and working into the delvement of the Egyptian gods and goddesses that rule this mysterious ancient land. The main voice could be a goddess herself, her voice is sweet and clear as she sings the primary lyrics of the song coyly, sure of herself, gently.

"Kumbalawe" is very pretty, carefree and reminded me strangely of 'haps a family of lions relaxing in the grassy savannah awaiting sleep to overtake them underneath the midday sun. It was a very good piece but one though I didn't particularily care for though you might be a different case altogether. "Suite Chinoise" starts as if a theme for royalty and if that was Dupere's mark he DID hit it. Another spine-tingler that turns into a loving, warm melody. Falling rain, then, and a worn, wood flute resounds through the rain forest. All of it collides to form a lovely piece that envelopes so many grand emotions in but only 10 minutes of sheer joy. " Querer" is passionate and sounds to me as being a very nice love song though not in my tastes. "Entracte" I was doubtful at the beginning but it wouldn't let me not like it - it took my chin in it's hand and made me look at it long and clear, to listen to it just for a few seconds more And there it was. I heard the drums kick in and the amazing melody begin in full throttle, pulsing with fun and energy and good humour. You could almost see the act going on in the stage of your mind. "Pokinai" was undescribably gorgeous! It reminded me of a lady hanging on the trapeze with her legs in almost completely darkness as a curled up ball and then unfolding very beautifully, silver rain falling all around her. Slowly, she begins to move and discover hands and feet. That innocence and curiousity gives way slightly to her complete joy that she's ALIVE! Then a young man appears and she discovers young love, they doing various moves in the air.... These are the impressions I get when I listen to this song. "Alegria" was impressive music-wise as well as impressive in vocal. The main voice has a strong, sultry voice that seems to have every possible element in perfect feminity. Even though it probably wasn't meant as a love song, it comes across as such and I have no hesitation in saying it was a flawless piece that reminded me of tan-shaded shadows floating over two lovers... "Kalimando" starts camly with natural sounds taking the spotlight, birds singing, the light and gentle strains of water. It was a ground-centring piece after all the energy and fast-paced pieces before it. The lyrics almost seem to say in their foreign, mysterious tongue, " Time to rest." "Grosse Femme" was a lively melody that sounded a bit like a carousel-horse tune that if you play really loud *grin* it sounds as if you are truly on a merry-go-round at a circus during the night, the cool air swirling around you like mist...

So, in conclusion of my journey into Cirque du Soleil, I have gone into ectasy and back again. I have been happy, sad, nostalgic, dignified, mysterious, and a whole lot more in the expanse of this one CD. If that isn't magic, nothing is.

4 out of 5 stars Correction.......1999-07-22

just wanted to fix a slip in my review- I said Kalandero is in Mystere- it is actually in Alegria. When I said Mystere I was thinking of the song Birimbau- both are track 3 on their respective CDs.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-09-14

I love the stage performance Alegria, but I have never seen the movie. I thought the movie would be simply the same show on big screen, and I was wrong. Should have done my research! The title song was the biggest disapointment. I know this is a different arrangement, but I was hoping for the same singer. I love the original singer very much. Her voice was so captivating. The singer in this album has a very low and deep voice, kind of gloomy and depressing. I prefer the orignal arrangement which is a lot more celebratoral in mood - isn't "alegria" supposed to mean "happiness"? The rest of the album is fine. The third song is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Stands on its own.......2000-05-05

I really shouldn't be surprised when Cirque du Soleil releases an unbelievable CD anymore. This is the twelfth soundtrack that has been released, and it manages to carry the emotions of the movie very well. In fact, the basics of Alegria's movie plot can be followed quite well on the CD. Now all we need to wait for is some radio station DJ to pick this CD up and listen to the heart-wrenching Love Leaves Someone Behind and we'll be seeing Cirque get some well-deserved airtime.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every single cent.......2000-03-16

At long last this album has been released, which should bring joy to some people. After watching the movie, I had too rush out and buy the album. Luckily i mangened to get a copy, and I would like to say, this is one of the best sountracks around. There are heart moving vocal songs. Instrumental songs, that will remind you of different parts of the movie. There are also extracts of songs from the original Alegria album. The songs here make you feel like laughing, dancing and even crying. Without doubt, this is a great album, and worth the price paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Cirque has outdone itself with this marvelous CD!.......2000-03-14

This soundtrack rivals even that of "O," Benoit Jutras's other Cirque masterpiece. The songs here are fabulous, both vocal and instrumental. The new arrangement of "Alegria" is just as good as, if not better than, the original, and every single one of the other vocal songs are some of the best I have heard. The instrumental pieces are also wonderful to listen to, whether they are slow and sophisticated or quick and lively. This CD has a little bit of everything; there are pop pieces, classical pieces, Spanish-style pieces, and much more. This is a must-have for any music lover, Cirque fan or not!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, for a translation of these wonderful songs...........2007-05-20

....and then again, perhaps it doesn't matter what words she sings. Since Francesca's newest CD (Hybride) is in a language all her own, clearly her intent is on conveying her energy and spirit to the listener. But these songs are such a magnificent mix of Romance languages that I'd love to know what words spark such a musically committed voice.

And oh, that voice.... imagine a seamless blend of Alberghetti and Joplin, and you might get the glimmer of an idea about her talent. Her choice of musicians is equally superb, and all of them play with heart and a solid sense of ensemble (difficult in these days of recording separate tracks). The songs vary in their cultural musical influences, and these tracks progress they weave a spell of longing and belonging in the world at large -- carried on the air of a voice which breathes from whimsical whispers to passionate excess....

Seriously, if anyone has access to a translation of the lyrics (or is fluent enough in all three languages to do the job), please write an Amazon review with information about how I can discover what she's singing.... because yes, I *would* love to know!

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars is not enough!!.......2004-10-19

Words cannot describe the beauty of Francesca's voice on this CD. I first heard her voice in CdS's Alegria-Live in Sydney, and was captivated by the woman in white and wanted to hear every album and every song this woman had put out. The fact that she remains relatively unknown astonishes me. What is even more amazing is that these songs cannot be found in a digital version through the download process?!?! Why doesn't BMG take advantage of the fact that they have the rights to this music and make it available? Another question which is beyond me.

I do not even understand most of the lyrics on this CD, but somehow that does not matter one bit. This CD is of such a high quality and this comes through in each and every song.....not one song on this CD to be "passed over" as is all too often the case. Francesca is special....no doubt about that; just read the reviews to see and hear how she has affected so many people. I am anxiously waiting for her new album which is to be released any day now.

I will repeat what I said in a review of "Alegria- Live in Sydney"....if angels sing, they surely sound like Ms. Gagnon.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing..........2004-04-09

This is without question the greatest CD i've ever owned. The entire album has a very rich sound that few can match. The attention to detail and production quality are top notch. If the album were all instrumental I would still consider it one of the best albums i've ever heard, the addition of Francesca's enchanting vocals takes this album to a level of quality that is near impossible to find. Definitely an album for anyone who appreciates a 'top shelf' product, regardless of niche.

    5 out of 5 stars Best CD I own!!.......2003-09-24

This album by Francesca is just plain fantastic! Every single song is beautiful! I've listened to this CD over and over again, and I can't imagine ever getting bored with it. Francesca is hands-down a top notch artist. I adore every song on this CD, but my current favorites (they seem to rotate!) are 'Occhi di Cielo', 'A'Lautre Bout', and the title track. The instrumentation is great, the lyrics sweet and often very romantic, and of course--the VOICE(!). She never fails to put me under her spell! She's simply amazing; I can't believe she isn't more well-known than she is! I'll say it again because I can't say it enough--She's AMAZING!!
