Editorial Reviews

Product Description
2003 GRAMMY Award Winner for Best Traditional World Music Album Sherab Ling Monastery nestles in the gentle pine-forested foothills of northern India's Kangra Valley, the seat of its founder His Eminence Ti Situpa XII, a leading Tibetan Buddhist teacher and peace campaigner. Here the monks perform as part of their daily lives prayer ceremonies originating many centuries ago in the great Buddhists monasteries of Tibet. This CD presents the Lineage Prayer with which the monks begin their day, offering respect to a line of great meditation practitioners going back as far as the 7th century, and the Mahakala Ceremony, part of each day's closing ritual in which the monks ask for purification and dedicate their blessings to all sentient creatures.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Music.......2007-05-30

The CD consists of three daily practices performed by the monks of Sherab Ling Monastery. Authentic Tibetan chanting has real power to remove obstacles and pacify the minds of listeners. I therefore recommend this CD very highly!

5 out of 5 stars As authentic as it gets -- no room for idiots.......2005-07-07

I listen to a lot of different recordings of Tibetan chant in my meditative practice (as a beginning practitioner), and this recording on CD is great for anyone interested in Eastern, Tibetan, or tantric meditation as a practice.

Contrary to some novice who finds the throat clearings "distracting," I welcome the absolute authenticity of these ritual chants. People should demand nothing less when it comes to rituals. I don't seek cleaned-up, filtered-down, overproduced, glamourized recordings to flirt with. These are meaningful and spiritual sounds. They come from the belly of the universe, and shame on those who want their chants prettied up.

There is nothing in the ambient noises that distracts me from going deeper and deeper into meditation, so this disc was absolutely a good buy and is now one of my top meditation CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Practioner.......2005-06-10

I first heard this album in my College's music library. It is so good that years later, remembering how good its vibrations were for me, I searched hard to find it again. I've listened to a few other Tibetan pujas on CD and this one is exceptionally good, in my opinion.
It's true there are some coughs etc, but I didn't find them distracting.

1 out of 5 stars Too Many Distractions!.......2005-01-03

The chants, although impressive, were littered with coughs, throat clearings and sniffling---all by someone very close to the microphone. This was definitely a "real" recording, no frills---but I found all the extra little noises distracting.

RELATIVE SOUND OF THE ULTIMATE

Monks of Palpung Sherab Ling Monastery, 2004 GRAMMY® WINNERS, Release New CD

"Relative Sound of the Ultimate: Monks of Palpung Sherab Ling", the Monastery's new CD contains sacred Tibetan Buddhist Chants which have developed within the Kagyu lineage over many hundreds of years. The pure transmission has been treasured as sacred from generation to generation, from Chanting Master to Chanting Master within the Kagyu lineage. Performed through the ages as dedicated prayer by thousands of Kagyu monks, nuns and lay people, these chants carry the power of sacred intention and have been recorded as they are performed within the walls of the Palpung Sherab Ling Monastery.

"Relative Sound of the Ultimate" has been superbly recorded and captures the wide open sonic atmosphere of the Monastery prayer hall where the live recording was made, as well as the deeply warm and centering sound of the Monks performing these sacred chants in the Palpung style.

This lovely, sincere performance was captured on a cd with more clarity and dynamic range than I have recently experienced.

I've listened to many CD's of monks chanting and this is a very superior recording. The chanting is superb. Listening to this CD from the opening bird song and children's voices to the final Blessing of the Three Jewels chant has the effect of stillng my mind and allowing me to experience a blissful spaciousness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dissolving The Visualization.......2005-10-12

"Awsome" is literally how you would describe the Tibetan ritual musics on this record, but then that word doesn't even come close. At times you can actually visualize the skull cracking open. "Auspicious Sounds Of Instruments In Nine Repetitions" in particuar is just amazing. It's probably where everything comes to a boil. Through the music you can really visualize how connected the Dip Tse Chok Ling monks are to various netherworlds. The monks use a wide range of instruments from the kangling(thighbone trumpet) and conchs to the monstrous longhorns. The percussion is quite intense as well, sounding like all manner of chaos descending in one fell plummet. This is not your typical world/new age music. This is intense, dissonant and unpredictable drone music for purposes of magick ritual. By the way it lurches one minute and soars the next, it's almost an entity unto itself.
