There's a lot to like on Paris Combo's Attraction, the postmodern Parisian cabaret quintet's third album. Album Description
The Attraction to All Things Uncertain is the first solo effort from tweaker, a.k.a. Chris Vrenna, former member of Nine Inch Nails. Featuring vocals by David Sylvian, Will Oldham and Shudder to Think's Craig Wedren, tweaker's Six Degrees debut is an incendiary and haunting collision of rock and otherworldly electronics.Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying........2005-08-03
In truth, all of these criticisms are probably true on some level. Certainly, Vrenna's work is heavily informed by his former employer ("Swamp"), but not enough so to be able to please the majority of NIN fans ("Years From Now"), and the truth is that from my perspective, its when Vrenna steps out and develops his own sound that he excels on the album.
The best tracks are bizarre, moody, and borderline irritating at times-- relying on some sort of bizarre arpeggiated part or oddball sample intertwining with a drum loop and more-often-than-not NIN-like guitar line. Take vocal tracks "Linoleum" (ably sung by David Sylvian) and "Take Me Alive" (Craig Wedren). Both establish a sort of tense, haunting mood punctuated by unexpected shifts and a tense vocal. Of the instrumental work (of which the album is dominated), the same sort of oddity in performance is where the record excels, as the bizarre "The Drive-Bye" illustrates. The song's sample-driven sound really borders on grating which develops the tension of the piece well.
Of course, sometimes it doesn't quite work. "Microsize Boy" is washed in electronic voices and NIN-like beats that end up grating to the point where you practically count the seconds until the song ends.
In the end, "The Attraction to All Things Uncertain" may have a lot of interesting ideas and unique moments, but as a whole I find that it fails to hold together. Interested parties will find a lot to like about this (I did), but its not an overly rewarding effort.
Excellent Debut.......2004-04-02
On the 4 vocal tracks, the guest appearances by David Sylvian, Will Oldham, and Craig Wedren are all exceptionally well done, and fit nicely. The lyrics sung on "Microsize Boy" are entirely mechanic and go excellent with the mood at this point of the album. After this track, the pace slows down significantly, almost as if to reflect on the previous 9 tracks, most of which all pulse with intense drum beats and synths. It picks back up again for the final two tracks, "After All" and "Come Play".
All in all, a 4/5 star performance for me, with only a few minor weak points throughout the entire album, but easily forgivable ones at that. You really need to listen for yourself to understand the concept. After hearing the first released track, "Ruby", off the second Tweaker album, there is no doubt in my mind it will go above and beyond what TATATU did. Here, Vrenna was only scratching the surface...
Standout Tracks: Linoleum, Years From Now, Swamp, The Drive-bye, Take Me Alive, Microsize Boy
WOW!!! Great C.D!.......2003-12-09
It's kinda stupid for these other reviewers to compare these guys to NIN. NIN is great but Tweaker definatley has merit. I think its unfair to compare the two because both have such different qualities.
P.S- Whoever the reviewer was that said this album had dance music breaks inbetween songs is INSANE. You wouldn't know real "dance" music if it bit you in the A$$.
Anyways... Please hear it for yourself.
phenomenal music.......2003-08-20
Not NIN.......2003-06-05
1. Linoleum - heavy synth pop and great vocals, but the guitar is out of place(8/10)
2. Years From Now - aggrivating techno, kinda like and intermission (1/10)
3. Swamp - industrial dance music and drum loops that build up to funky country guitars and pounding agressive drumming (10/10)
4. Turned - yet another techno intermission, less aggrivating though (3/10)
5. Happy Child - deep and introspective lyrics, emotional singing and well done instrumentation (10/10)
6. The Drive-bye - weird sampling and haunting indian music, the only good intermission (6.5/10)
7. Take Me Alive - melodic singing and upbeat bass n' drums. i really like the bluesy guitar work after each chorus (8/10)
8. Susan - harsh grating industrial dance. very reminiscent of Wumspcut, except it's catchier (4.5/10)
9. Microsize Boy - digitized vocals and beats too catchy to be industrial and to heavy to be pop (9/10)
10. Full Cup of Coffee - really long and boring (3/10)
11. Empty Sheet of Paper - dance and techno [intro to "After All"] (4/10)
12. After All - worse instrumentation than the first Craig Wedren song, but better singing (7/10)
13. Come Play - techno and reggae (3/10)

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Lightning in a bottle.......2006-12-11
Many people will remember the number one UK hit Perfect, but that's only one of the many great songs in the collection, that went Platinum. It's a great CD to play at a party, where you'd like to set a mellow mood and allow people to talk. In terms of pure listenability, the acoustic setup doesn't allow for a lot of instrumental variety, although this was clearly meant to be the first salvo. While lacking variety, the song writing and performances are good enough to keep you listening.
For a taste of Nevin's lyrics consider this stanza and chorus from "Smile and a Whisper"
"All of the letters and all of the words
in all of the books all over the world
they're nothing but sounds and vowels and nouns
for talking to strangers, that's all they're worth.
Words are unable to speak of love
like a smile in a whisper does."
As the title suggests this is a deeply romantic and at times wistful album, that speaks very much to the universal themes of the importance of love in the lives of young adults, that has a universal resonance.
In a not unusual story, after touring the world (in particular Japan where they were a sensation) and working on a second album, Reader grew angry with Nevin and her lack of creative input into the composition of songs. Rader quit the band and a second album was never released.
While she's had a successful solo career, she's never managed to approach the level of success she achieved with Nevin's band and this album.
Absolutely a classic album.......2005-01-07
It's GOT to be worth it!.......2004-06-16
Hence a song as pure and guiless as "Perfect." I remember hearing this CD from a friend at RCA and immediately shoving all the other CDs on my desk to one side so I could listen to it over and over, for most of that week. Out of all the music I was sifting through, Fairground Attraction sounded the most lifelike. To this day, I am amazed at how well this disc has held up. A song like "Station Street" can still get me choked up, as can "Allelujah."
Most of the playing here is organic and airy, and the production kept things uncluttered and uncompressed. It's kept "The First Of a Million Kisses" from falling into a space where an album's sound traps it to their times instead of becoming timeless. And any singer that can give me goosebumps (as Edie does at the end of "Whispers") will always have a place in my CD collection.
First of a million listenings..........2004-02-06
An Overlooked GEM.......2003-10-17
This album's lovely tunes really were before their time, and if the band were to get together today, I think they'd find themselves a whole other audience and level of success in the USA, particularly since artists nowadays seem to have a very limited vision (or anything new for that matter). I highly recommend this album.

A great album!.......2005-10-28
1.Lights and Thunder- 10/10 A great intro with Vito making his guitar scream with some great harmonics, dives and some shredding with some cool backround music. A great mix of heavy and soft music with some cool vocals from Mike Tramp. A good solo from Vito too. Very good lyrics too. This song probably lasts too long but hell if you think it's lasting to long than change it to the next song ;)
2.Broken Heart- 10/10 A great acoustic intro that leads into a great melodic song with an awesome riff and guitar tone. Some cheesy lyrics but this is a great song with an awesome solo.
3.Leave Me Alone- 10/10 A great heavy riff. Some great vocals too. Vito's solo is great too as he shreds away and his vibrato is amazing as well. This solo sounds like a mix of Zakk Wylde, George Lynch, Jake E. Lee with a little Yngwie thrown in.
4.Love Don't Come Easy- 7.5/10 A good song although I think Mike Tramp's voice is too soft for the song although Vito's solo is excellent again as the ending line of the solo is amazing.
5.You're All I Need- 8/10 A good ballad although Tramp's vocals are too soft. Vito continues to turn in a great performance on the guitar as his solo is filled with emotion.
6.It's Over- 9/10 A great soft song with another tremendous solo from Vito Bratta.
7.Warsong- 10/10 An excellent heavy riff with harder vocals from Mike Tramp. Some good lyrics actually. Some amazing shredding by Vito who blazes on the guitar
8.She's Got Everything- 10/10 A great heavy riff and this song seems Badlands influenced although Mike Tramp doesn't hit the high notes Gillen hits in every Badlands song. Vito's solos are great as he shreds and adds a wah wah pedal into these solos. The acoustic solo at the end is incredible too!
9.Till Death Do Us Part- 8/10 A sappy ballad. Not the best track on here. And nothing special about this one execpt Vito's great solo which is filled with emotion.
10.Out With the Boys- 10/10 Another good heavy riff. This is a great fast paced song. A great melodic party type song. Vito tears up the solo with some great arpeggios and tremelo picking.
11.Blue Monday- 8/10 A good slow blues instrumental. Vito's playing is excellent once again although this is song is too slow.
12.Farewell to You- 1/10 BY FAR the worst track on the album this is a soft song that doesn't do anything and the "na na na na na" is RIDICULOUS I mean I like the band but this song isn't very good
This album is very good and I suggest you get it. Vito Bratta is one of the best guitar players ever.

Luxurious and Melting.......2006-03-16
Paris Combo is French, but has an international flair. At times jazzy and infused with Latin sensuality, it has an additional element of gypsy mystery. The sounds of the words melt into the music and it is sumptuous.

Maybe the brightest band in the galaxy.......2006-02-13
Paris Combo's third album is a tour of another world, a forgotten era, when music moved your heart but was classy and seductive at the same time. The second and third tracks from this disc are positively haunting.
There is no one today producing a sound like this. Their music will stay with you; it is mesmerising.
IN LOVE.......2005-05-22
INFECTIOUS, CREATIVE, FUN..........2003-05-21
Paris Combo is an extremely talented, vivacious five-piece whose members skillfully combine elements of various genres into their own sound: Parisian café music, Gypsy jazz, be-bop, cabaret and other forms swirl together in a mix that would prove unwieldy in the hands of many. They are all accomplished musicians, and very obviously in tune literally and figuratively with each other on many levels - each member finds a way to both shine and blend on every single track, without ever seeming to eclipse the contributions of the others.
All of the tracks are truly standouts - for the sake of brevity (I looked up the word, for those of you who might wonder...), I'll limit my comments on individual selections to four. On track 2, `Trois petits points', the band takes a breakneck 7/8 rhythm and makes it graceful and natural; tracks 7 and 10, `Dans les bras dun loup' and `Avril', respectively, have two of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard; track 12, the mostly instrumental `Escapade', allows each member to step up in either solo or duo sections - the guitar on this track will bring to mind the stylings of Django Reinhardt, and the tandem work between the scat vocal and upright bass is incredible.
Belle de Berry is the quintessential chanteuse (although she's not limited to that style alone), and she adds some very tasty accordion here and there. Potzi's guitar is astonishing - he's quick and precise where he needs to be, but he never plays without feeling, never like a machine. Multi-instrumentalist David Lewis (trumpet, bugle, piano, string arrangements and co-producer) is excellent on the keys and never overbearing in his brass playing - the production/arrangement values are especially fine and unique in several places where he sounds like he's almost off-stage from the rest of the group, a nice, very effective touch. Mano Razanajato provides a steady (but again, never mechanical) bottom on his upright bass, as well as contributing vocals; and François-François is always inventive, being alternately supportive and driving with his drums and percussion.
The whole thing comes together marvelously - and the spirit of this music is so strong and delightful that knowledge of French is not necessary to enjoy it (or to sense the humor in some of the songs, such as `Mais que fait la NASA?' (`...but who made NASA?'). Whenever I put this into the assortment of CDs I take in the car with me, I might as well leave everything else at home - it stays in the player for days.
Another gem.......2002-05-26
