Attraction

Editorial Reviews

There's a lot to like on Paris Combo's Attraction, the postmodern Parisian cabaret quintet's third album. As with previous efforts, the band updates the French chanson and gypsy swing tradition by adding a stylish hipster element that could be construed as French lounge music, but most of the arrangements for the album's 13 original tunes display a developing maturity that avoids gimmickry in favor of solid musicianship. Guitarist Potzi and trumpeter-pianist David Lewis in particular shine as tasteful soloists. Chanteuse Belle du Berry is convincing as well, sensually wrapping her voice around the French lyrics to project meaning even if you don't speak a lick of the language. Attraction also benefits from modern production touches and guest musicians, both of which add a lush new layer to the music that only enhances the band's depth and class. Leaving the winking self-awareness behind, Paris Combo has grown into a topnotch but still fun cabaret act. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

The Attraction to All Things Uncertain is the first solo effort from tweaker, a.k.a. Chris Vrenna, former member of Nine Inch Nails. Featuring vocals by David Sylvian, Will Oldham and Shudder to Think's Craig Wedren, tweaker's Six Degrees debut is an incendiary and haunting collision of rock and otherworldly electronics.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying........2005-08-03

"The Attraction to All Things Uncertain" is the debug album by Chris Vrenna's "Tweaker" project. Inspired by the cover painting, the album has been criticized from numerous angle for being too much like Nine Inch Nails, or too little like Nine Inch Nails, or too much of a dull electronica experiment with not enough songs.

In truth, all of these criticisms are probably true on some level. Certainly, Vrenna's work is heavily informed by his former employer ("Swamp"), but not enough so to be able to please the majority of NIN fans ("Years From Now"), and the truth is that from my perspective, its when Vrenna steps out and develops his own sound that he excels on the album.

The best tracks are bizarre, moody, and borderline irritating at times-- relying on some sort of bizarre arpeggiated part or oddball sample intertwining with a drum loop and more-often-than-not NIN-like guitar line. Take vocal tracks "Linoleum" (ably sung by David Sylvian) and "Take Me Alive" (Craig Wedren). Both establish a sort of tense, haunting mood punctuated by unexpected shifts and a tense vocal. Of the instrumental work (of which the album is dominated), the same sort of oddity in performance is where the record excels, as the bizarre "The Drive-Bye" illustrates. The song's sample-driven sound really borders on grating which develops the tension of the piece well.

Of course, sometimes it doesn't quite work. "Microsize Boy" is washed in electronic voices and NIN-like beats that end up grating to the point where you practically count the seconds until the song ends.

In the end, "The Attraction to All Things Uncertain" may have a lot of interesting ideas and unique moments, but as a whole I find that it fails to hold together. Interested parties will find a lot to like about this (I did), but its not an overly rewarding effort.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2004-04-02

I've found myself listening to TATATU a lot recently, gearing up in anticipation for Tweaker's upcoming second album, "2 a.m. Wakeup Call". This type of music is definitely not for everyone, but for those who decide to venture in, they won't be disappointed. This album is intended to be listened to on a rainy day, when you have plenty of time to just relax, have a few cups of coffee, and possibly just stare out a window or outside a patio into the bleak overcast.

On the 4 vocal tracks, the guest appearances by David Sylvian, Will Oldham, and Craig Wedren are all exceptionally well done, and fit nicely. The lyrics sung on "Microsize Boy" are entirely mechanic and go excellent with the mood at this point of the album. After this track, the pace slows down significantly, almost as if to reflect on the previous 9 tracks, most of which all pulse with intense drum beats and synths. It picks back up again for the final two tracks, "After All" and "Come Play".

All in all, a 4/5 star performance for me, with only a few minor weak points throughout the entire album, but easily forgivable ones at that. You really need to listen for yourself to understand the concept. After hearing the first released track, "Ruby", off the second Tweaker album, there is no doubt in my mind it will go above and beyond what TATATU did. Here, Vrenna was only scratching the surface...

Standout Tracks: Linoleum, Years From Now, Swamp, The Drive-bye, Take Me Alive, Microsize Boy

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Great C.D!.......2003-12-09

This album is VERY eclectic! Many different sounds and genres are combined. Industrial, trance, ambient, rock. I really enjoyed this album!
It's kinda stupid for these other reviewers to compare these guys to NIN. NIN is great but Tweaker definatley has merit. I think its unfair to compare the two because both have such different qualities.

P.S- Whoever the reviewer was that said this album had dance music breaks inbetween songs is INSANE. You wouldn't know real "dance" music if it bit you in the A$$.

Anyways... Please hear it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal music.......2003-08-20

to start off, yes, christ vrenna was the drummer for NIN, and no, this cd does not sound like "the downward spiral" or "broken." it is a completely different sound. but that is probably to be expected, seeing as how when one does one's own solo project they can do whatever they please. it may not sound like NIN, but you can here a hint of influence in it. very electronic, featuring the voices of many other persons, other than himself. NIN is one of my favorite bands, and so is tweaker. i recommend that all of you buy this cd if you enjoy good music, which this most certainly is. it is always in my cd player. just check it out, you'll be happy

4 out of 5 stars Not NIN.......2003-06-05

This is mostly calm, thoughtful, synth pop and alternative. For some reason though Vrenna thought it'd be a good idea to put (generally awful) techno intermission tracks between the real songs.

1. Linoleum - heavy synth pop and great vocals, but the guitar is out of place(8/10)
2. Years From Now - aggrivating techno, kinda like and intermission (1/10)
3. Swamp - industrial dance music and drum loops that build up to funky country guitars and pounding agressive drumming (10/10)
4. Turned - yet another techno intermission, less aggrivating though (3/10)
5. Happy Child - deep and introspective lyrics, emotional singing and well done instrumentation (10/10)
6. The Drive-bye - weird sampling and haunting indian music, the only good intermission (6.5/10)
7. Take Me Alive - melodic singing and upbeat bass n' drums. i really like the bluesy guitar work after each chorus (8/10)
8. Susan - harsh grating industrial dance. very reminiscent of Wumspcut, except it's catchier (4.5/10)
9. Microsize Boy - digitized vocals and beats too catchy to be industrial and to heavy to be pop (9/10)
10. Full Cup of Coffee - really long and boring (3/10)
11. Empty Sheet of Paper - dance and techno [intro to "After All"] (4/10)
12. After All - worse instrumentation than the first Craig Wedren song, but better singing (7/10)
13. Come Play - techno and reggae (3/10)

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Lightning in a bottle.......2006-12-11

Fairground Attraction paired scottish songwriter Mark Nevin's jazz and pop inflected acoustic guitar, base and drums setup, with singer Eddie Reader's distinctive voice. While Reader makes the songs her own, it's Nevin's hooks and clever wordplay that make this a memorable and catchy album, that surprisingly hasn't been imitated effectively since its release in 1998.

Many people will remember the number one UK hit Perfect, but that's only one of the many great songs in the collection, that went Platinum. It's a great CD to play at a party, where you'd like to set a mellow mood and allow people to talk. In terms of pure listenability, the acoustic setup doesn't allow for a lot of instrumental variety, although this was clearly meant to be the first salvo. While lacking variety, the song writing and performances are good enough to keep you listening.

For a taste of Nevin's lyrics consider this stanza and chorus from "Smile and a Whisper"

"All of the letters and all of the words
in all of the books all over the world
they're nothing but sounds and vowels and nouns
for talking to strangers, that's all they're worth.

Words are unable to speak of love
like a smile in a whisper does."

As the title suggests this is a deeply romantic and at times wistful album, that speaks very much to the universal themes of the importance of love in the lives of young adults, that has a universal resonance.

In a not unusual story, after touring the world (in particular Japan where they were a sensation) and working on a second album, Reader grew angry with Nevin and her lack of creative input into the composition of songs. Rader quit the band and a second album was never released.

While she's had a successful solo career, she's never managed to approach the level of success she achieved with Nevin's band and this album.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely a classic album.......2005-01-07

Fairground Attraction (First of a Million Kisses) bring a unique singing and classic sound to relaxing music, but definitely not one dissapear into the background. One to have in your collection!

4 out of 5 stars It's GOT to be worth it!.......2004-06-16

Edie Reader is in possession of a voice that works magic on the slightest of phrases. Which is why "The First Of a Million Kisses" was the best reason to ever hear her sing. Guitarist and songwriter Mark Nevin wrote a batch of songs that were almost all - pardon the stretch here - "Perfect." He tackled forms from light dancehall to country swing and Edie made them all sound like they were the most urgent messages on the face of the planet.

Hence a song as pure and guiless as "Perfect." I remember hearing this CD from a friend at RCA and immediately shoving all the other CDs on my desk to one side so I could listen to it over and over, for most of that week. Out of all the music I was sifting through, Fairground Attraction sounded the most lifelike. To this day, I am amazed at how well this disc has held up. A song like "Station Street" can still get me choked up, as can "Allelujah."

Most of the playing here is organic and airy, and the production kept things uncluttered and uncompressed. It's kept "The First Of a Million Kisses" from falling into a space where an album's sound traps it to their times instead of becoming timeless. And any singer that can give me goosebumps (as Edie does at the end of "Whispers") will always have a place in my CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars First of a million listenings..........2004-02-06

I rarely write any reviews here, but I had to say something about this album. It is one of my all-time favorites, and I definitely recommend it. If you like pop, or even some light jazz, this is great. Eddie Reader has a wonderful voice, and all the songs are great. Hallelujah takes you to another time and place... My favorites are Hallelujah, The wind knows my name, Find my love, and of course the hit song Perfect... I have had this album for over ten years and I still listen to it; I never get tired of it... Get this one, and if you like it, give Ay Fond Kiss a try.

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked GEM.......2003-10-17

It is a shame that Fairground Attraction isn't around anymore. I understand they were a big hit in the UK, and never achieved that level of success in the U.S.A., which is a SHAME! Listen to any of the songs on this album and you are wisked away with sensuous sounds and lucious rhythms. Eddi Reader's voice is like that of an angels, wishing you well and at the same time enveloping you in a blanket of warmth and love. The instrumentation of the band, along with their wonderfully written songs, truly takes your hand and holds it throughout the lovely journey of melody and time.

This album's lovely tunes really were before their time, and if the band were to get together today, I think they'd find themselves a whole other audience and level of success in the USA, particularly since artists nowadays seem to have a very limited vision (or anything new for that matter). I highly recommend this album.

This is by far the best WL album. Almost every song is like a Greatest Hit. Lights and Thunder, Broken Heart, Love Don't Come Easy, You're All I Need, It's Over, Warsong, She's Got Everything, Till Death Do Us Part, and Farewell To You are incredible. And the other 3 aren't bad either!

5 out of 5 stars White Lion's Best Album.......2005-11-06

MANE ATTRACTION, White Lion's final studio album, is also its best. Most of the songs are top-drawer, and the highlights are better than the best songs on their previous albums. Many are about starting over in the aftermath of difficult times, even if it means leaving behind what you once held dear. The fact that lead singer Mike Tramp, unlike many of the so-called "hair band" singers, advocates sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD a great purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars A great album!.......2005-10-28

A great album from a great band similar to Van Halen and Dokken. Vito Bratta is up there with the best guitarists of the 80's... Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Jake E. Lee, Warren DeMartini, Tony MacAlpine and so on.

1.Lights and Thunder- 10/10 A great intro with Vito making his guitar scream with some great harmonics, dives and some shredding with some cool backround music. A great mix of heavy and soft music with some cool vocals from Mike Tramp. A good solo from Vito too. Very good lyrics too. This song probably lasts too long but hell if you think it's lasting to long than change it to the next song ;)

2.Broken Heart- 10/10 A great acoustic intro that leads into a great melodic song with an awesome riff and guitar tone. Some cheesy lyrics but this is a great song with an awesome solo.

3.Leave Me Alone- 10/10 A great heavy riff. Some great vocals too. Vito's solo is great too as he shreds away and his vibrato is amazing as well. This solo sounds like a mix of Zakk Wylde, George Lynch, Jake E. Lee with a little Yngwie thrown in.

4.Love Don't Come Easy- 7.5/10 A good song although I think Mike Tramp's voice is too soft for the song although Vito's solo is excellent again as the ending line of the solo is amazing.

5.You're All I Need- 8/10 A good ballad although Tramp's vocals are too soft. Vito continues to turn in a great performance on the guitar as his solo is filled with emotion.

6.It's Over- 9/10 A great soft song with another tremendous solo from Vito Bratta.

7.Warsong- 10/10 An excellent heavy riff with harder vocals from Mike Tramp. Some good lyrics actually. Some amazing shredding by Vito who blazes on the guitar

8.She's Got Everything- 10/10 A great heavy riff and this song seems Badlands influenced although Mike Tramp doesn't hit the high notes Gillen hits in every Badlands song. Vito's solos are great as he shreds and adds a wah wah pedal into these solos. The acoustic solo at the end is incredible too!

9.Till Death Do Us Part- 8/10 A sappy ballad. Not the best track on here. And nothing special about this one execpt Vito's great solo which is filled with emotion.

10.Out With the Boys- 10/10 Another good heavy riff. This is a great fast paced song. A great melodic party type song. Vito tears up the solo with some great arpeggios and tremelo picking.

11.Blue Monday- 8/10 A good slow blues instrumental. Vito's playing is excellent once again although this is song is too slow.

12.Farewell to You- 1/10 BY FAR the worst track on the album this is a soft song that doesn't do anything and the "na na na na na" is RIDICULOUS I mean I like the band but this song isn't very good

This album is very good and I suggest you get it. Vito Bratta is one of the best guitar players ever.

Mike Tramp- Vocals
Vito Bratta- Guitar
Greg D'Angelo- Drums
James Lomenzo- Bass

5 out of 5 stars Rock melody at its best!!!!.......2004-02-18

I grew up listening to White Lion and especially this album. Even today this album conjures up brilliant visions and deep emotions. I guess the difference between those who adore White Lion and those who don't boils down to whether you feel their music. No doubt, they were not the best band around in the 80's. But, they made some beautiful music and that counts! Very few of the 'so called' great bands left such a lasting impression or had the feel of White Lion's melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Leaving With A Bang!.......2004-02-10

This was the last White Lion cd! It's really is to bad that they aren't around anymore! But this cd most definatly is one hell of a way to go out rockin'! I myself think this is their best cd they made! With songs like:"Lights & Thunder", "Broken Heart", & of course "Farwell To You"! This is the best cd to get besides "The Best Of White Lion"! Worth buying!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sylvester's last studio CD.......2006-08-11

Mutual Attraction is Sylvester's final CD that has all orginal recordings. Starting with the infectious "Someone like you" which was a major hit in the U.S. (Top 20) you have a sense that Sylvester wanted to make a statement. Also with the Stevie Wonder remake, the gospel tinged " Living for the city", the Porgie & Bess remake "Summertime" and the title cut "Mutual Attraction" this CD describes Sylvester as the artist he was. Featured on the CD is the dance track "Sooner or later" and the beautiful final song "Anything can happen" this CD is by far on my list of favorite CD's by an artist. Trust, this list is very long!

If you want to hear the first openly gay artist as his best this is one of many CD's by the Legendary SYLVESTER.

A must have, buy it trust you'll like it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Burning it up - right to the end.......2005-07-21

I was a little shocked to read the All Music Guide review of this album, wherein they described Sylvester's performance as "wooden" and "sounding like a shell of himself". Whoever wrote that review, never put this disc into a CD player. Syl SOARS on Mutual Attraction. Back are old favorites, Ken Kessie and Morey Goldstein producing and Tip Wirrick on guitars. His Manager, Tim McKenna of Borzoi Music Artists struck a distribution deal for Syl and Megatone with Warner Brothers, and Syl was back in the majors for this album. While this album doesn't approach the Dance/HiNRG/Eurodisco sound of his best for Megatone; i.e. "All I Need", "Call Me" and "M-1015", the production is impeccable and Syl's vocals are in GREAT form. There is also quite a few styles covered on this CD. His version of Stevie Wonder's 'Living For The City' is a gospel-flavored tour de force. His remake of 'Summertime' is also amazing. The dance cuts are 'Someone Like You', 'Sooner or Later' and 'Talk To Me'. The title song is great laid back kind of dance tune. And the jazzy 'In The Cool of the Evening' is a sultry, smoky treat. While the US version of this album came with an extended remix of 'Mutual Attraction', the import does not. No great loss, this album stands up on its original merits and doesn't really require bonus cuts. Syl was also working on the follow-up to this album when he succumbed to AIDS. Three cuts were able to be salvaged from those sessions, and can be found on the Megatone release "Immortal", but they don't quite stack up to what you'll hear on this disc. I mourned his passing for quite some time. Whenever I hear Sylvester's unearthly wail on a radio or in a club - all I can think of is friends and fun and good times and Syl will always represent that for me. It is my opinion that Sylvester never attained the true fame he deserved but he left us with a brave, rich legacy of music that knew few boundaries for people to continue to discover. This was his gift. Rest in Peace Syl and thanks for the great music and all the memories.

5 out of 5 stars Luxurious and Melting.......2006-03-16

Listening to Paris Combo jolts you out of daily existence into a world that lacks mediocrity and is infused with playful spontaneity. Vocalist Belle Du Berry's voice is sensual, fresh and smooth as vanilla syrup over strawberries. She captures the French "joie de vivre" and takes it to entirely new levels of joy that almost feel angelic.

Paris Combo is French, but has an international flair. At times jazzy and infused with Latin sensuality, it has an additional element of gypsy mystery. The sounds of the words melt into the music and it is sumptuous.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the brightest band in the galaxy.......2006-02-13

.

Paris Combo's third album is a tour of another world, a forgotten era, when music moved your heart but was classy and seductive at the same time. The second and third tracks from this disc are positively haunting.

There is no one today producing a sound like this. Their music will stay with you; it is mesmerising.

5 out of 5 stars IN LOVE.......2005-05-22

I am so in love with this band and I do not even know French (althought my name is French :-)) I've alwaysed loved international music and this album hits the spot. I like to listen to it because it helps me learn the French Language (one of my loves!), BUT, I love it becasue it helps me express a side of myself that is uncommon to others, but common to me. I recomend it for the American, the Australian, the Asian, and Spanish, I recomend it to all!

5 out of 5 stars INFECTIOUS, CREATIVE, FUN..........2003-05-21

...and there are plenty of other adjectives for this wonderful recording - I'm sure I'll find more to use before I'm done here. This was my first exposure to this group - and I flipped over it so much that I went back the next day and picked up their previous effort, LIVING-ROOM, which is a fine album as well.

Paris Combo is an extremely talented, vivacious five-piece whose members skillfully combine elements of various genres into their own sound: Parisian café music, Gypsy jazz, be-bop, cabaret and other forms swirl together in a mix that would prove unwieldy in the hands of many. They are all accomplished musicians, and very obviously in tune literally and figuratively with each other on many levels - each member finds a way to both shine and blend on every single track, without ever seeming to eclipse the contributions of the others.

All of the tracks are truly standouts - for the sake of brevity (I looked up the word, for those of you who might wonder...), I'll limit my comments on individual selections to four. On track 2, `Trois petits points', the band takes a breakneck 7/8 rhythm and makes it graceful and natural; tracks 7 and 10, `Dans les bras dun loup' and `Avril', respectively, have two of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard; track 12, the mostly instrumental `Escapade', allows each member to step up in either solo or duo sections - the guitar on this track will bring to mind the stylings of Django Reinhardt, and the tandem work between the scat vocal and upright bass is incredible.

Belle de Berry is the quintessential chanteuse (although she's not limited to that style alone), and she adds some very tasty accordion here and there. Potzi's guitar is astonishing - he's quick and precise where he needs to be, but he never plays without feeling, never like a machine. Multi-instrumentalist David Lewis (trumpet, bugle, piano, string arrangements and co-producer) is excellent on the keys and never overbearing in his brass playing - the production/arrangement values are especially fine and unique in several places where he sounds like he's almost off-stage from the rest of the group, a nice, very effective touch. Mano Razanajato provides a steady (but again, never mechanical) bottom on his upright bass, as well as contributing vocals; and François-François is always inventive, being alternately supportive and driving with his drums and percussion.

The whole thing comes together marvelously - and the spirit of this music is so strong and delightful that knowledge of French is not necessary to enjoy it (or to sense the humor in some of the songs, such as `Mais que fait la NASA?' (`...but who made NASA?'). Whenever I put this into the assortment of CDs I take in the car with me, I might as well leave everything else at home - it stays in the player for days.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem.......2002-05-26

I am a HUGE Paris Combo fan. I have worn out their first two CDs because I listen to them constantly. I couldn't wait for Attraction to come out. And it is just as fantastic as their previous albums. These five are brilliant musicians and you can't help but dance to their rhythms and melodies. And if you ever get a chance to see them live... GO... you will not be disappointed, it will be the best concert of your life.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd great album.......2007-02-25

Patra has made 2 albums so far and I been looking forward her 3rd album but I am not sure if she is planning to make her 3rd album but I do know she is from another country tho like Kylie. Mek Me Hot and Undercover is 1 of my favorite songs off this album but I do like the rest. 5 stars for this lovely Patra and I also 5 stars on her other album "Queen Of The Pack"

3 out of 5 stars Get hooked on the pheromones .......2006-01-04

This may have been an attempt to "mainstream" Patra, but it's still a great dancehall album. Salt-N-Pepa make a great appearance on "Hot Stuff". Another good track is the bass-heavy "Deep Inside".

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2003-12-01

This is a great album! Patra's definately the Queen of dancehall and just a Queen in general in her own right! Every song on Scent of Attraction is strong and worth the listen. Patra can be sexy yet she doesn't got to overdo it like Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim. Patra's second album is a great album from beginning to end. Best songs on it are "Scent of Attraction" (with Aaron Hall), "Pull Up To The Bumper," and "Hot Stuff" (feat. Salt-N-Pepa). If you don't already own this, then I strongly recommend you make this CD your next buy! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Second Album.......2003-08-27

Patra came back strong on this CD. All the songs are strong & well proformed. I love all the songs. She out-shines many of the male dancehall artists. She should really release more music!

4 out of 5 stars Patra, baby.......2000-06-13

Patra is a very talented singer. Her lyrics are not so much about politics or religion as sex and taking control of the bedroom. Patra knows how to get the groove out of you. This album is incredible and a phat way to wake up in the morning. In terms of danceability, Patra is to dancehall what Rawkus is to hip-hop.
