She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

Este Cd ha sido mi sorpresa del año 2006 Puede ser un CD de música mejicana una obra maestra???. Si la respuesta es YES, entonces La Llorona="Obra maestra". Lhasa no tiene una voz de las que podríamos calificar de "bonita", pero sí que es carismática y tremendamente expresiva. Si a ello añadimos que las canciones presentan unas letras originales, con sentido y mensaje, unos ritmos que se meten en tu sangre y te acompañan allá adonde vayas, unos arreglos musicales "teatrales" en el mejor sentido del término y unos instrumentos musicales irreprochablemente bien tocados, el resultado dificilmente puede mejorarse. No tengo ni idea si Lhasa está arriba o abajo en el raking de las cantantes superventas. Pero si es lo primero....es lógico,y si es lo segundo...esperemos que tarde o temprano, LHASA, se haga justicia con tu forma de enteder la música.

Felt like eating ice-cream in drizzling rain..........2005-11-07

Funny, i had no idea about this album nor the artist.. My mother was in Istanbul airport waiting to board the plane for New York and she was just strolling about in the last minute newspaper/souvenir stores.

The music playing in the shop got her attention and she asked the owner at the cash register if she could purchase the cd. The store owner agreed and took it out of his CD player and gave it to her half price since it was used. (At least he included the outer cover and the booklet inside).

I first listened to the album while i was chatting late night on the computer with my friends. I wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics or the songs, it was just intended to be background music.
I finished the whole cd, i was still chatting, and i wanted to listen it again. I didn't understand the lyrics, but it sounded sad. I felt bad, it made me think that De Sela came from poverty and an unhappy childhood, i thought of South American kids running around in narrow streets.. I realized that i really loved these songs, i don't know what the lyrics are about, it just sounds that there is some pain and love in these songs.. In the 5th song "El Payande" it sounds like she is defying somebody/something and then gives in. And then the next song starts playing, it made me recall a summer in Barcelona.. Gaudi, colors, late nights a touch of Picasso somewhat Don Quixote...

This cd is for people who are looking for a piece of imaginitive music, not intended to listen in the car or whilst jogging..

I just got this from Amazon & the first thing that captured me was the sound of the sumptious guitar by Marcela Rodriguez followed by a trembling, hoarse,fully throated voice of Chavela Vargas Oh! boy is it an experience oh! what? she has the best haunting voice I have ever heard in a tradition music.I dont understand Spanish but the music transcends all language barriers. At times you could feel that she is almost crying and sadness is all over the vocals with the guitar mimicking her trembling voice it's unbelievable.especially on "sombras", "Cruz de Olvido","Rogaciano", "La Llorona" infact ALL SONGS are the best. The version of "Llorona" is a complete version at 8:29 minutes. Lucky for me I got an import from Madrid, Spain with Pedro Almodovar's(movie producer of Talk to her,All about my mother,Live Flesh, Tie me up, Tie me down etc) stamp of approval as he likens Chavela Vargas to Billie Holiday, Edith Piaff,etc and he says that his experience with Vargas was the most important thing in his life.Now you tell me how can anyone beat that.Thanks to her smoking cigars (sorry I'm not condoning smoking)her voice hoarseness is what makes me love her music even more.The music is laid back here & very melodius, no electric snyths just voice & acoustic Spanish guitar. This CD will appeal to people who love Latin guitar, jazz/fussion,jazz vocal, & those who love to immense themselves with other people's cultures. You dont have to speak Spanish to listen to any kind of music.So go on buy this as gift for someone special.

The selections on this CD are very relaxing. Great to listen to after a busy day. Their rendition of Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" will bring tears to your eyes. If you like classical flute and guitar, you should enjoy this CD.
