French Cafe

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Although far from definitive (no Edith Piaf in sight!), this enchanting compilation delivers a perfect aural snapshot of what spending a late summer afternoon in a French cafe actually feels like. The supreme elegance and understated approach that lie at the core of these 13 tracks will delight fans of sophisticated pop. As is the case with previous Putumayo releases, the sequencing is seamless, combining the endearingly old-fashioned flavor of George Brassens with the iconoclastic romanticism of George Gainsbourg and the sultry whispers of a youthful Brigitte Bardot. Better yet, the disc spends some valuable time introducing listeners to a new generation of French musicians who have embraced the traditional chanson format while incorporating fresh elements into the mix. Try the light-as-a-feather caress of female vocalist Enzo Enzo, the sweet playfulness of the electronica-informed Mathieu Boogaerts, and the irrepressible optimism of Paris Combo--a jazzy quintet that represents the French cafe ambiance at its cosmopolitan best. --Ernesto Lechner

4 out of 5 stars A good relaxing and romantic CD.......2007-07-16

If you want to relax and sip on a good cup of coffee / tea on a Sunday afternoon, this is a good choice.

3 out of 5 stars nothing special.......2007-06-26

This cd didn't do much for me...there's only a couple songs on the entire cd that i enjoy...i skip through the rest of them (they are just goofy).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2007-04-11

I am a high school French teacher and it is REALLY hard to find French music that doesn't make the kids groan. When I first listened to this cd I loved it, but I didn't think THEY would since our tastes in music are sometimes not real similar! Quelle surprise!!! They loved it as much as I did - some have even asked me where to purchase it. I have played it so many times that I am now ordering a back-up copy to keep here at school.
This is French music at its finest!!

5 out of 5 stars best coffee music.......2007-03-20

I love sitting in a cafe and remembering when I went to Europe. This CD gives me the exact feel when I stayed in Paris. I love this cd. I play this cd all the time when I want to relax to mellow tunes.

5 out of 5 stars French Cafe.......2006-11-29

I love this CD and it is one of my favorite French CD's (I own many). Putumayo does such a great job of putting together wonderful compelations from different artists. If you are looking for something you will be able to enjoy during a nice dinner at home, a relaxing car ride or as some easy listening background music, this is a great CD to get. I speak French on an intermediate level, and I've enjoyed trying to figure out what the songs are about. My husband, on the other hand, speaks no French at all, but also enjoys this CD as much as I do. Kind of strange as his regular favorites CD's include anything by U2, The Killers, Cold Play and the like. With that said, I guess French Cafe will appeal to anyone! Additionally, the new Paris Cafe, also by Putumayo, is just as popular in my house!

The CD conjured up images of being in a lively French bistro with a wonderful glass of wine, and the pleasant exchange of lively conversations among "locals." I would highly recommend for anyone wanting to set the mood for a themed event or who personally enjoys traditional French accordion music.

Largely unknown in this country, Gainsbourg has become the toast of the rock underground in recent years, with hipsters ranging from Beck to the Bad Seeds readily dropping his name. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, Gainsbourg dabbled as a painter and pianist in the mid-'50s while sipping Pernod in the seedy nightclubs and cafes of Pigalle. He finally found his true calling in 1958 at the age of 30 when he launched his recording career by delivering romantic and risqué monologues about the Bohemian arts scene with a distinctive voice best described as a mix of Lou Reed and Maurice Chevalier. Mercury Records has compiled two albums from Gainsbourg's early career, each presenting his French-language raps over very different musical backings. Du Jazz dans le Ravin collects jazz tracks released between 1958 and 1964. A fan of Monk, Miles, and Dizzy, Gainsbourg had great taste even if his own playing wasn't extraordinary. Coleur Cafe chronicles the same period, but it focuses on Gainsbourg's attempts to introduce France to various "ethnic musics," including Latin American rhythms and what today would be called Afro-pop. Tunes such as "Erotico Tico" and "New York USA" reek of novelty, but they're still better than most of what fellow world-beaters David Byrne and Paul Simon deliver. Sadly, Gainsbourg isn't around to enjoy his big comeback: He died of a heart attack in 1991. But he was consistent to the end. "For me provocation is oxygen," he said, and he caused an international scandal months before his death by voicing his explicit carnal desire for Whitney Houston on live TV. Let's see if Marilyn Manson can top that one. Jim Derogatis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Serge Gainsbourg compilation album.......2002-03-04

This CD showcases the best of Serge, in my opinion.

Somehow I think that Serge loved this period best. I think that this is where his heart was - long before he turned into Gainsbarre and the late 60s - 80s.

The song "Couleur Cafe" itself is an enduring classic of French popular music. To this day one can still hear it being played on the radio in France.

5 out of 5 stars Loungey French with African & Latin thrown in.......2002-02-12

Serge Gainsbourg put his extraordinary talent to merging Euro-Pop music with Latin and African rhythms on this album, and comes up with the most hip & happening lounge music you'll find. I gave my Esquivel away because after getting hooked on this, it just fell short. Couleur Cafe never fails to make everyone feel like having a party and transports one to an easy state of mind. At first listen, I smiled and laughed. At the second listen, I was chilling out in my own space and at the third, I realized Serge is an extremely sensitive, deeply philosophical man who can extract the very elements of an eclectic range of styles that, when combined, lightly uplift the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Say this with an accent..."Oh my goodness"!Tres Tres Bon.......2001-07-03

Escargot........Croissant.......Jaques Cousteau. Before I get going I just want to give you all my extensive french knowledge...that's it. Just so you don't think I'm some Sartre Reading Left Banker eating my comfit...this is fabulous without the language thing. I don't know what Serge is saying but this is just the greatest compilation of french beat/ ethnic beat music. You can see the ambiance as you listen to this. Go to Pauvre Lola and give it a listen. The use of girls voices in the pieces is just so sexy and brilliant. Serge himself is a brilliant composer. His melodic lines are always shifting the moment you think you have them. And with all it's frenchness and innovation it is immediately accessible. It is brimming with kitsch. One day I had it in my walkman. I fell asleep and started dreaming of men in berets being followed by models in New York. When I woke up Serge was saying "Rockfeller Center, Empire State Building". It was this song about New York... This is a pretty obscure recommendation but If you want a very european 60's feel, give this a shot You will love it beyond belief.

4 out of 5 stars EXPERIMENTAL GOODS.......2000-10-04

Gainsbourg here is exploring another musical style, and successfully so. It makes me want to dance, at least. I particularly enjoy "Laissez-moi tranquille", although the entire album works well as one coheisve piece, and is great background music. Also wonderful are the vocal and instrumental versions of "Cha Cha Cha du Loup"... the arrangement of "Les Amours Perdues" is clever, along with "New York USA". Apart from this, while the album is lovely overall, it descends into an odd faux-jungle sound in the background with Gainsbourg singing and seems to be a choir of young people singing(chanting) in the background, and this becomes tiresome.

5 out of 5 stars Stop plucking your nose hairs and buy this CD.......2000-09-26

Gainsbourg was an incomparable French composer of high-quality, sophisticated pop tunes of all kinds. He sounds like a much more upbeat, hipper, peevish version of Leonard Cohen. In fact, if you don't understand two words of French, Serge's music sounds even better, since your imagination is free to roam anywhere it likes.

There are 3 major compilations of Serge's '60s output that are on the market, "Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin," "Coleur Cafe," and "Comic Strip." All three are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL music for self-respecting pop conneisseurs. In fact, whip out your credit card right now and buy all 3, because THERE IS NO BETTER POP MUSIC MADE BY ANYONE ANYWHERE.

"Coleur Cafe," which is a mostly Mambo, Latin, and African beat influenced collection is the most consistent of the three. "Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin" is a Miles Davis/Dave Brubeck influenced collection of ultra-cool Jazz-pop fusion. "Comic Strip" is a less consistent, late '60s, psychedelic-rock influenced set which features some of Serge's most spectacular songs such as his collaborations with Brigitte Bardot (Bonnie and Clyde) and Jane Birkin (je t'aime...moi non plus).

Cap at a rakish angle, Gitane hanging from the lip... as Guillaume Veillet's liner note points out, Paris's most indigenous music may seem a trifle cozy, but The Rough Guide to Paris Café Music shows the inaccuracies of that prejudice. The origins of French café music may lie in the Auvergne, whose musicians played the smallpipes, but the biggest influence that fed into the music came from Italy, with an organetto tradition traced to Nascente's Bar Italia (the other big influence came from the gypsy world). The Bal Musette café ballroom was the melting pot in which the smallpipes gave way to the accordion and stars began to emerge. Emile Vacher and Charles Peguri were the founding fathers of this tradition, and they're both present on this entrancing new Rough Guide installment. We also hear Jean Corti, who played in a military brothel in the 1940s, and the drug-addicted Fréhel, whose smoky tones are the authentic sound of the 1920s. The variety of styles in these 25 tracks is dazzling, as hot jazz alternates with modern cool. Django Reinhardt's son Babik beats up a lovely storm with the New Quintette du Hot Club de France; meanwhile, Edith Piaf sings a song called "L'Accordeoniste." And if you're hooked on this instrument, get a copy of Wergo's Global Accordion: Early Recordings, a marvelous cornucopia of vanished sounds. --Michael Church

Album Description

The Rough Guide To Paris Café Music conjures up the romantic image of accordion music floating through wisps of smoke from a Gitane, the voice of Edith Piaf and a moonlit Eiffel Tower. This style of music is known as bal-musette and grew from the music of the immigrant communities in Paris at the turn of the last century. This unique and comprehensive collection traces the music from its lowly roots in the café-charbons to its modern incarnations in modern jazz and rock-musette with tracks from its seminal artists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful French Music.......2003-12-19

I picked this CD up because of a then upcoming trip to Paris and boy am I glad I did. It opened up a new world of beautiful music from beautful noir inducing waltzes to high spirited fist pumpers to slick jazz, this disc has all you need.
The music is mostly accordian driven with varios tempos and moods. Some of the tracks are older more traditional French musette and chansons that evoke images of wartime Paris and some of the tracks are more rock oriented not unlike a French version of the Pogues or Flogging Molly. This CD has something for everyone who enjoys new adventures in music and if youre a fan of world beat, cajun, french music or jazz, youre sure to enjoy this.
The standouts here for me ar Hulements D'Leo,Les Ogres Du Barback and Debouts Sur Le Zinc who mix punk spirit with this new style...

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but I'm not impressed.......2002-07-26

Don't get me wrong-I love Paris Cafe music, mainly because I'm an accordionist myself. I also love Rough Guide music because they are usually able to get the most music from the best artists that represent the region well-and all on ONE cd! However, this one slips through, in my opinion. This CD is merely a hogpoge of any tune with an accordion and singing in the french language, and has no real direction or purpose. Another qualm I have about this album is that it really isn't that great for listening casualy too. To be able to just pop in a CD to create an atmosphere for a dinner or chatting with friends is one of the great aspects of REAL parisian cafe music-it serves as a background, yet it still is noticible and interesting to listen to with out taking all your attention. This CD on the other hand demands that you concentrate on it-it's more of a musical text book on all the different types of french music than a CD that is enjoyable to listen to. But if a musical text book is what you want, then go ahead and buy it, just remember that I told you so.

5 out of 5 stars Eroica Trio, Classical Music Angels.......2006-03-19

The album, "Best of Eroica," demonstrates with heavenly beauty this group's musicality, technical skill, and deep understanding of the music they've chosen. This album is a "must" for anyone who enjoys piano trios and wants to relax surrounded by transporting sound.

4 out of 5 stars Spirited style in a generous album--4.5 stars.......2005-12-09

This generous album (nearly 75 minutes long) contains 14 selections from the award-winning trio's other CDs. Thus, the range of music is quite wide. The artists (Erika Nickrenz--piano, Adela Pena-violin, & Sara Sant'Ambrogio--cello), though accomplished soloists, meld their playing beautifully. The Albinoni here is the shortest of the four versions in my collection--played with spirit. The Vivaldi demonstrates their virtuosity. I think the viola shines in Brahm's lullaby. The Piazzolla pieces remind me of the concert at which I heard them play; it was spectacular. Still, a few of the pieces are not particularly to my liking--though they are played well. Also, as a baroque fan I'd like to see some Telemann, Bach, &/or Handel. Most of the pieces are very lively--not too relaxing or useful for meditation--but great for listening. But then, as a trio, they are chamber music oriented. Still, IMHO the order of pieces on the album could be improved. Overall, it's a very fine album though I like the baroque one better--just a personal preference, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2005-08-26

I saw them live a few years ago, and was captivated by their group chemistry and technical precision. One of my favorite modern classical groups.

5 out of 5 stars Better still, buy the other CDs.......2005-05-27

As a compilation, the ladies have selected a few cuts from each of their 6 CDs to give any listener new to the Eroica Trio--named in homage to Beethoven's 3d "Eroica" Symphony, not the crass misreading offered by a previous reviewer--a singular treat, and thus serves as a good first disk. But it is a sampler of sorts, and while I think that all of their CDs are good and worth your attention, they do range in focus and style from tangos to the Baroque, to healthy doses of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach--so suit to taste. The 5 star rating I give this CD is really for the larger body of work that this disk draws from.

5 out of 5 stars I was prepared to have a mean rant, however.............2005-05-07

These ladies can play!! The chemistry and emotional fire is what makes up for the corny "Erotica Trio" title, but I ask you-what would you do as a graduating classical musician to get noticed today? Our cities are riddled with out-of-work and under appreciated young classical musicians, and it's partly our fault for not telling everyone about this great art form.
One day we may see a renissance in the musical arts where knowing the works & composers of the classical cannon won't be so rare- just imagine.

5 out of 5 stars French Cafe Accordion.......2003-07-21

I highly recommend this CD as creating the mood that one experiences when listening to the strolling musicians who hop on and off the Metro cars. It is a smooth, relaxing instrumental which captures the authentic French sound of musicians in Paris.

5 out of 5 stars The Sexiest Soundtrack of 2003 and 2004!.......2006-07-30

Great score, for it has the French charm score in it. The score and the music makes you think of France and it makes you wonder how it is like (if you have never been there) and I haven't been to France, but this soundtrack boosted my idea of wanting to go to France. Richard Robbins made a clear and focused score that reflects Paris, France. This is great music to listen to if you're just strolling the cobblestone streets of a village and simply to just relax to. This is recommended!

Okay, I have a cd of French music and it has the song that they play in the trailer! I didn't know how to respond to the question so hopefully you'll find it here. The cd is from Williams-Sonoma and is called La Mer. Its track number nine titled C'est Magnifique. And if you liked this soundtrack it's probably worthwhile to buy this cd! Hope its still available and that this helped, oh, if not, the song is by L'Accordéoniste if that helps!

We simply must know the name and artist of the trailer's song which IS NOT included as part of the CD soundtrack. Please, Please... Anyone??

Like Volume 1, this CD is another great collection of french pop songs. My personal favorites are "C'est la mode" and "Roller Girl", the latter sung by French New Wave goddess Anna Karina. And you can't forget the last track "Psyche Rock", which was the inspiration to the theme to the tv show "Futurama". All in all, a very fun CD, get it!

5 out of 5 stars Great! Better than v1!.......2004-12-29

Of compilations 1 and 2, this one is definitely the one to get! Much more go-go-ish and fun and goofy. Volume 1 is good, but this one is so much better.

    5 out of 5 stars stunningly beautiful...........2006-03-22

Should you ever have the chance to see and hear The Eroica Trio live, by all means drop everything and go hear these women. They are first-rate performers and very generous and humorous in concert. I have seen them multiple times and would never tire of their music. This CD in particular in just gorgeous. It combines their virtuosity as well as their expert and sensitive choice in music. The Godard piece is absolutely worth the cost of the CD all by itself. Buy and enjoy............

5 out of 5 stars The heroic "Eroica".......2006-01-11

If you have never had the pleasure of hearing this ensemble in person, you have missed a special experience. Their CD's are the next best thing. They bring a special energy to their playing which is unmatched by most other chamber groups. We see a lot of these other folks in concert and most look and play like they are at a funeral (perhaps their own!). Music doesn't have to be played that way. There is nothing funereal about the Eroica. Everything is played well and with the gift of life. You will not go wrong buying this and any of their other recordings.

4 out of 5 stars a nice adaptation of the Gershwin preludes.......2003-03-09

I did not know anything about this trio before hearing their performance of the Gershwin preludes. Solely on a musical basis I found the arrangement of the Preludes to be very stimulating and enjoyable. The composer himself likely would have gotten a boot out of the performances.

2 out of 5 stars Spirited in fast music, but WARNING: aimless in slow music.......2000-06-29

I haven't been exposed to any of the radio and TV hype about the Eroica Trio. Neither have I heard any of their concerts yet. The only hype I've _seen_ is looking through some of the fan web sites today, and reading reviews here at Amazon. I have not heard their two subsequent discs yet, either. So, I'm reviewing only on the basis of what I hear and see on this debut CD.

I bought this disc mainly to hear their rendition of the Ravel Trio, and because the Schoenfield piece looked like fun. The Ravel is, unfortunately, a major disappointment here. I have four other CD's of this wonderful piece, and by comparison all four hold the composition together better than the Eroica Trio does. The Eroica do not give much flowing forward motion to the music, nor do they make the structure clear; instead, they bog down in sweet sounds that quickly become uninteresting (not going anywhere). The mind wanders. The piece seems interminably long and incoherent. The fast portions are OK but nothing special, and the slow sections just get soggy.

Some of this shows up in the movement timings, too. Rubinstein/Heifetz/Piatigorsky: 8'30",4'05",6'25",5'16". Previn/Rosenfeld/Hoffman: 9'40",4'04",7'18",5'30". Trio Fontenay: 9'31",4'27",6'37",5'37". Rouvier/Kantorow/Muller (the "Un coeur en hiver" soundtrack): 9'04",3'59",7'34",5'12". The Eroica Trio: 10'10",4'08",9'31",5'12". That is, the Eroica take the first and third movements down to a deadly crawl, dissipating most of the tension in the music. And then the slow motion drags even slower....

I have nothing against slow tempos in general, as long as they have enough focus, intensity, interest, and direction. Not here. This disc illustrates very well the principle that the most difficult music to play well is slow music. Non-musicians tend not to think of that, perhaps being wowed by "virtuosity" and flash, but experienced musicians know it to be true. And here's an excellent exhibit in support of it. I fail to understand how this CD got a Grammy nomination for best chamber music performance. Perhaps these performers give a good show live, and perhaps the visual elements of their performances help the cause, but the evidence is not on this recording.

This CD is probably worth having anyway for the Schoenfield "Cafe Music" and the bizarre arrangements of Gershwin's three preludes. Those are not available elsewhere, and are entertaining enough. The Godard "Berceuse" is as unengaging as the slow parts of the Ravel trio are: again the Eroica players seem content merely with making pretty sounds, while the music doesn't go much of anywhere. BOR-ing. The Schoenfield is clever, and especially interesting in the fast parts, but (once again) the slow music is not well served by the performance.

Obviously, some of the appeal of this trio is the way these women look in their designer "styling" (credited in the CD booklet!). Indeed, they probably could be models if they were not musicians; their physical appearance is right in line with the cultural standard notions of beauty. This CD includes three glamourous full-color photographs. The eye-candy appeal might be another incentive to buy this disc. It really depends if you're seeking great musical performances, or stereotypical good looks. When the CD is in the player, it does not matter how the performers look....

After listening to this disc and forming my opinions above, I looked up the _American Record Guide_ review of this disc: March/April 1998, p240. I'm pleased to see that the reviewer there didn't like this disc any more than I did. (It's not just me being cranky.) Same reasons: the deadly lack of interest in the slow parts. But that reviewer didn't like the Gershwin or Schoenfield either. I'm a bit more charitable than that.

To sum up: all the notes are in place, as neatly placed and as surface-pretty as the mascara and dresses and smiles. The recorded sound is excellent, as is usual from producer Joanna Nickrenz (the Eroica pianist's mother). But the musical performances ultimately aren't engaging enough. This is a CD to pull off the shelf occasionally for the novelty of the Schoenfield, the Gershwin, and the glamourous trio photos. That hardly justifies a full-price purchase.

5 out of 5 stars most amazing trio ive heard--ever.......1999-03-04

the eclectic style and amazing passion and energy of the eroica trio is contagious. this CD brialiantly captures it all. it is simply amazing and these women are beautiful creatures with rare, terrific gifts.
