Celtic Woman, Vol. 1

Editorial Reviews

Like the material heard on the A Woman's Heart series, the selections included on Celtic Woman represent the contemporary yet introspective side of Irish music. It includes a fair sprinkling the high, creamy, ethereal sopranos typical of the Celtic Twilight esthetic made famous by Anuna, Enya, and Clannad. But there are also a good many chesty altos and big-voiced pop belters. Rita Connolly packs a clarion-like mezzo of the stripe that has made Mary Black a household name, Áine Furey¹s loosely-raveled pipes sometimes channel Stevie Nicks¹ yeasty growl, while Marian Bradfield could easily become the Irish Patsy Cline. In fact, the tunes themselves often harbor haunting parallels with American old-timey music, which was after all descended from imported Scots-Irish traditions that got land-locked in the Appalachians. With so much high-end diversity on tap, the album has a remarkably broad appeal and should delight fans of modern Celtic styles, country pop balladeers, singer-songwriters or any combination thereof. --Christina Roden

Close your eyes and let your Sprit soar to the beautiful melodies

3 out of 5 stars Expectations.......2006-11-10

While I enjoyed this volume I was disappointed that it was not as good as Celtic Woman. Maybe when I listen to it again I might change my view.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman Vol. 1.......2006-07-14

Fabulous traditional Irish songs by young women who have the voices of angels and the instrumental talents which make this a treasure.

My girlfriend and I love the Celtic Woman CD!

5 out of 5 stars Women Voices Emerging From Celtic Soul!.......2006-06-22

While I was attending a course in England in 1996 I spent a weekend at Wales and was captivated by Celtic rhythms, music and poetry.
Still being at the UK I bought some CDs just to get more acquainted with this gorgeous music. Two of them remains as my favorite ones "Celtic Woman" and "Celtic Moods", both of them gives the listeners a general picture of what's up.

"Celtic Woman" (1996) should not be confounded the DVD & CDs of the same name that were released later in the USA.
Here we have seven exceptional interpreters which contribute with one or two songs each from their previous albums.

Canadian singer Loreena McKennitt gives the beautiful & sad ballad "Annachie Gordon" with her characteristic poignant and deep voice.

Irish singer Rita Connolly sings "Venezuela" and "Ripples in the Rockpools". This last one is just extraordinary. It is an irate piece of music from a legendary pirate queen menacing to leave her husband. The repetition of three verses gives the composition a very special cadence.

Very young (at that moment) and blond Marian Bradfield gives her best with the romantic & enticing ballad "Tonight is Just for Us".

Dubliner Melanie O'Reilly performs "Annie Moore" dedicated to the first immigrant to arrive to Ellis Island NY.

Last but not least "Trees" from Fiona Joyce is an unforgettable mystic song.

Enjoy this introductory album to the joys of Celtic music!

I bought this thinking it was the women from the PBS special. It isn't. Don't be fooled! This isn't nearly the calibre of Celtic Woman with Chloe, Meav, and Lisa.

4 out of 5 stars A wide display of female Celtic talent.......2000-11-19

This CD presents wide range of music from todays leading Celtic female talent. They certainly challenge and stretch the bounds of Celtic music. Traditionalists might object to certain tracks as not being ``Celtic-like''. But if you are willing to explore the bounds of Celtic music as much as these artists did, then this CD is for you!
