Brooklyn's getting like Brixton, where Jamaican signs and symbols--dreadlocks, tams, patwah, and, most of all, reggae--have become dominant elements of the cultural weave. The locus of Crooklyn's polyglot musicscape on the hip-hop-funk-and-jazz-meet-reggae tip is the True Mystic Sound System, a crew of spoken-word artists, Jamaican dub poets, rappers, singers, and avant-garde musicians who know that reggae dancehall is Jamaica's hip-hop and hip-hop is America's reggae. It's all good for these visionaries of word and rhythm, especially True Mystic member Soothsayer, who incorporates jazz cool and reggae heat into a laid-back funky flow that's utterly intelligent, rootsy, and new-millennium bouncing. This hour-or-so listen amounts to an aural peek into the future. The set flows like an extended single, engineered with almost ritual care, so that it's near impossible to praise one track over the rest. But "Can You Dig It," with its references to Talking Heads, its evocative sound effects, and its whirlpool of a production is amazing. Other crew members aid and abet, among them reggae dub poet Osagyefo, who makes two impressive appearances, spitting fire and making sense without lapsing into that annoying singsong cadence favored by most of his peers; Dr. Israel, whose earlier solo release is equally impressive; and female chanteuse Divaship. --Elena Oumano
