Brooklyn's getting like Brixton, where Jamaican signs and symbols--dreadlocks, tams, patwah, and, most of all, reggae--have become dominant elements of the cultural weave. The locus of Crooklyn's polyglot musicscape on the hip-hop-funk-and-jazz-meet-reggae tip is the True Mystic Sound System, a crew of spoken-word artists, Jamaican dub poets, rappers, singers, and avant-garde musicians who know that reggae dancehall is Jamaica's hip-hop and hip-hop is America's reggae. It's all good for these visionaries of word and rhythm, especially True Mystic member Soothsayer, who incorporates jazz cool and reggae heat into a laid-back funky flow that's utterly intelligent, rootsy, and new-millennium bouncing. This hour-or-so listen amounts to an aural peek into the future. The set flows like an extended single, engineered with almost ritual care, so that it's near impossible to praise one track over the rest. But "Can You Dig It," with its references to Talking Heads, its evocative sound effects, and its whirlpool of a production is amazing. Other crew members aid and abet, among them reggae dub poet Osagyefo, who makes two impressive appearances, spitting fire and making sense without lapsing into that annoying singsong cadence favored by most of his peers; Dr. Israel, whose earlier solo release is equally impressive; and female chanteuse Divaship. --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars Voice of a New Era.......1999-05-27

Heard a couple of Soothsayer's tracks on a collection CD called "Brooklyn Beat Rockers." Lemme say right now this is the voice of the next generation. Only problem is no one has this record in stock or seems to have any idea where it is. What the deal?

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Great, How Do I Get It?.......1999-05-23

I've read great reviews of this CD on Amazon and in magazines and yet it's no where to be found. The record stores say it's out but they don't have it and Amazon says it won't be out until January 2000. If that's the case, how and why would they have reviewed it already? I want this CD bad ... someone end my agony and tell me where I can find it fast.

4 out of 5 stars fresh new grooves.......2000-07-14

Zen Turtle gets off to a shaky start with a silly little thesis on the relative merits of public spending on space shuttles versus welfare, but after that it turns into a nice groove. Sooth expands the dub n bass genre dramatically into funk, soul, rock and on tracks like "Can You Dig It" something completely original. A very original album that should appeal to a wide audience from rappers, rockers and techno enthusiasts.
